In 2002, journalist Carol Off met Asad Aryubwal—an Afghan man who became a key figure in a documentary she was working on at the time.
The film was about thuggish warlords in Afghanistan, and the documentary ultimately changed the course of both Off and Aryubwal's lives in ways neither could have imagined.
For Off, the documentary went on to win a Gemini Award, while Aryubwal ended up fleeing his home in Afghanistan as a means to keep himself and his family safe. The family's remarkable story is laid out in the pages of Off’s new book, All We Leave Behind.
Carol Off and Robina Aryubwal, Asad Aryubwal's daughter, share their story in the clip above.
