Calgary restaurant owner receives threats after ‘small business support fee’ added to bill

The cost of doing business has never been cheap, and some small businesses say a recent rise in Alberta’s minimum wage is making it harder to balance the books. Now, a move by an Alberta steakhouse to offset the costs has some customers talking.

The conversation heated up when a customer posted a picture of her bill online, showing that an optional small business support fee had been added to her total. The 4 per cent fee started appearing on other bills the same day that Alberta raised its minimum wage. But after receiving threats, the owners removed it, and now they’re wondering what to do from here.
