Combat dry skin with these homemade beauty treatments

It's officially autumn and the season's cool, crisp weather can start to take a toll on our skin—but there are ways to maintain your glow, according to holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy.

See below for some homemade beauty products that will help your dull and dry skin during cold weather seasons.

Lemon Pink Salt Body Scrub
Makes enough for at least 5 scrubs

This scrub is excellent for sloughing off dead skin cells. Not only does it make your skin glow, it also makes it silky smooth. The bonus? It's super easy to make.

  • 1 cup pink salt (a.k.a. Himalayan rock salt)
  • 1/3 cup of your choice of oil*
  • Juice of one lemon

*Joy uses MCT oil because it is essentially liquid coconut oil, but you could use sweet almond oil, extra-virgin olive oil or any other liquid oil of your choice

  1. Combine all of your ingredients together in a mason jar and voila—your body scrub is complete!

Hydrating Face Mask
Makes 1 mask

This mask is amazing for hydrating and rejuvenating tired, dull skin. It's also great for conditions associated with redness that indicate inflammation such as roseaca, eczema and acne because it's made with super-nourishing ingredients.

  • 1 tablespoon of plain coconut milk yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon organic coconut oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon of turmeric spice
  • 1 teaspoon unpasteurized honey

  1. Simply mix the yogurt, coconut oil, turmeric and honey until the colour is uniform.
  2. Apply it to clean skin and let this treatment work its magic for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm water and enjoy a hydrated, calm complexion.

DIY Probiotic Mask

This recipe is great for dry or oily skin. It is extremely hydrating and nourishing. The honey acts as a humectant, which means it helps to retain moisture in the skin. Extra-virgin olive oil is anti-inflammatory and moisturizing for the skin. Bio-K+ is an amazingly concentrated formula of good, active bacteria that will help nourish your skin’s flora and promote a healthy skin microbiome.

  • 2 tbsp organic kefir
  • 1 tbsp unpasteurized honey
  • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

  1. Combine ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Apply to a clean face and leave on for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove with a washcloth and warm water.
