People are turning to face masks for various skincare concerns: oily skin, hydration, scarring, and acne.

Beauty expert Seanna Cohen breaks down the different kinds of masks and shares some of her favourite products.

CLAY MASKS
These masks absorb oil, draw out impurities, and are cooling. They’re ideal for oily and acne-prone skin. Don’t use them if you have dry or dehydrated skin because they can remove moisture.

EXFOLIATING PEEL MASKS
Exfoliating peels use fruit enzymes, alpha hydroxyl acids, and beta hydroxyl acids to “eat away” at the skin’s top layer. They’re ideal for anti-aging and acne-prone skin because they will brighten and help fade pigmentation. They aren’t great for anyone with overly sensitive skin and can cause sensitivity to sunlight.

HYDRATING SHEET MASKS
A sheet mask is a cloth or paper soaked in active ingredients, then applied to the face. It’s like a super-charged way to apply a concentrated serum. It’s great for dry and dehydrated skin types because they intensely hydrate and keep all of the moisture locked in. They’re also not messy and don’t need to be rinsed off, so they’re perfect for travel (especially after a long flight).

DETOXIFYING CHARCOAL MASKS
Charcoal is one of this year’s trendiest skincare ingredients. Activated charcoal is carbon that has been treated to increase absorbency. It’s ideal for acne-prone skin, blackheads, and oily skin because it acts like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil.
