According to the World Health Organization, depression impacts more than 300 million people worldwide, and every year, nearly 800,000 people die from suicide. The recent suicides of fashion mogul Kate Spade and legendary chef and author Anthony Bourdain show that celebrities aren’t an exemption from this statistic.
Their deaths have put conversations about suicide and depression front and center, with many people saying they don’t understand how this happened.
One woman addressed that lack of understanding in an article for Refinery 29. Deidre Olsen is the author behind The Invisible Struggle of Living with High-Functioning Depression and she recently spoke with Ben about living with depression and what people are getting wrong in the coverage of high profile suicides. You can watch their conversation in the video player above.
