All Rise Is Courtroom Drama Like You’ve Never Seen Before

Who doesn’t love a good legal drama? Especially one that’s packed with great characters, compelling cases, and personalities from all walks of life. Enter this new series from Canadian creator Greg Spottiswood, and we may have our next legal obsession.

Who’s in it

Court is in session with a compelling and diverse cast that includes TV legend Marg Helgenberger (CSI, ER) along with Simone Missick (Luke Cage), Wilson Bethel (The Young and the Restless), Jessica Camacho (The Flash), J. Alex Brinson (Travelers), Lindsay Mendez (Elementary) and Ruthie Ann Miles (The Americans).

The pitch

The law isn’t always black and white, which makes this series 50 shades of you-know-what. Each episode follows the prosecutors, defenders, judges and other courthouse employees as they try to find their own brand of justice for the citizens of Los Angeles. The only problem? They’re dealing with a deeply flawed legal system, one that’s buried in centuries of injustice and questionable precedent.

The sell

Our entry point to all of this is incoming judge Lola Carmichael (Missick), whom as we see in the trailer, is completely relatable (not to mention ridiculously likeable). Rather than settle into her new cushy role she leans in and crushes it… mostly by pushing the boundaries of what a judge is supposed to do. She’s just one of many characters you immediately want to follow on this journey, which is excellently crafted by Spottiswood—the Canadian scribe who brought us series like King and Remedy.

Besides, who doesn’t love watching up-and-coming characters try and make a name for themselves in a high-stakes job? It’s basically one of our favourite TV setups (here’s looking at you, Grey’s Anatomy).

All Rise premieres this fall on CTV. Check out the trailer below:
