It was a serious case of bad timing for DeLuca when Karev mistakenly caught him in bed with his girlfriend Jo and punched him in the face in the Season 12 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy,” but for actor Giacomo Gianniotti, it was a definite highlight.
“We were all excited when we read that part of the episode because the drama tends to usually land on the supporting characters, the guest stars and patients so to have something that heightened and dramatic within the actual characters and cast it was cool,” says the Toronto-raised Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays DeLuca.
“We don’t get to do fights a lot and I’m a guy, I like doing that stuff, fight choreography. We did that stuff in theatre school it was fun to sort of take up those skills. We had a blast doing it.”
Earlier in the episode, Jo had confided in DeLuca she couldn’t marry Karev because she was already married to an abusive man and the only way to escape was to run. She had gotten extremely drunk and when DeLuca tried to help her into bed, he tripped and fell on top of her. Karev walked in that very moment and assumed the worst.
Gianniotti isn’t sure how the drama is all going to play out when Season 13 returns.
“I know I got fitted for a prosthetic cast for my face so I’ll assume you’ll see a mauled version in some way.”

Gianniotti joined the series at the end of Season 11 (right after the death of McDreamy) and has nothing but praise for the long-running medical drama.
“I don’t think I’ve been on a show this big, the ratings are so high, and we’ve got a lot of really lovely press this year talking about the resurgence of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’”
While he enjoyed exploring the relationship his character had with Maggie, he isn’t sure these two have any chance of reigniting things, especially now that she revealed she has feelings for Riggs.
“DeLuca has some growing up to do emotionally. I think he was very much like, ‘Why can’t we be open and be public about it? Why are we hiding all our little advances and stuff like that?’ And as soon as he caught wind people were maybe judging him (for dating an attending) that he was getting into surgeries or advancing in his career due to his relationship he thought, ‘No I want to be taken seriously.’”
Gianniotti would like to see DeLuca focus even more on his professional career this season and find his specialty.
Even though he is shying away from pediatrics after having a traumatizing experience seeing a mother lose a child, Gianniotti hopes his character can get over that.
“I’d like to see him realize that, that it’s bigger than him and that’s his calling and he needs to find his own way in making peace with that so he can do something he’s really good at.”
