On Thursday’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Meredith finally found out where Derek is…and it’s not good.
*Major Spoilers Ahead!*
After saving three people in a car accident just ahead of him on the road, Derek gets back in the car only to be slammed by a semi-truck.
He’s rushed to a local hospital but the doctors there aren’t trained like the ones at Grey Sloan Memorial and they make a fatal mistake when they don’t order a CT scan right off the bat.
By the time Meredith arrives, Derek is lying unconscious in a hospital bed and the doctor tells Meredith he’s “so sorry for [her] loss.”
She signs the papers to take him off life support and moments later (after an emotional montage of MerDer’s best moments), Meredith says goodbye and the monitors are shut off.
What??! Is McDreamy really dead?
According to a statement from series creator Shonda Rhimes on EW.com
, he certainly is.
“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character—for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example—happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true—of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”
Dempsey told EW
it all happened very quickly and there wasn’t a lot of discussion.
“It was just a natural progression,” he told EW. “And the way everything was unfolding in a very organic way, it was like, okay! This was obviously the right time. And then it was a question of…That’s a question for Shonda.”
Earlier this week a report at Pagesix.com
indicated that Dempsey’s “diva” behavior on set had angered Rhimes, which may have caused her to get rid of the actor early. Dempsey had previously signed a two-year contract that would have kept him on the show for the remainder of Season 11 and Season 12.
“Patrick has been acting like a diva and has clashed with Shonda. She suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn’t coming back full time,” a show source told Pagesix.com
“Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, there is little tolerance on the show for troublesome talent.”
Troublesome or not, it will remain to be seen how Meredith and the rest of the Grey Sloan docs move past Derek’s death. One thing’s for sure, the fans likely never will.
