I am not a fan of Adam Lambert and don't care for his style of music. But with regard to the choreographed kiss, come on people, lighten up. I agree with other posters who've identified anti-gay bigotry and double-standards at play in the backlash against Lambert's performance. Female performers have been allowed to get away with as much, even more, for decades. Eg: Madonna and Britney locking lips in full-mouth a few years ago.

Lambert admits he got carried away but won't say sorry

While some are hailing Adam Lambert's sexually charged American Music Awards performance as groundbreaking and others are dismissing it as vulgar, the singer admits he got carried away but will not apologize for his act.

Lambert couldn't avoid discussing the controversy when he appeared on CBS's The Early Show Wednesday to perform two songs from his new album, which was released Monday.

During an interview, Lambert admitted that he did not include some of the more sexually explicit elements of his performance during his rehearsal, which upset host network ABC.

"I admit I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it," he said. "I do see how people got offended and that was not my intention. My intention was to interpret the lyrics of my song and have a good time with it."

While performing his song "For Your Entertainment," Lambert kissed a male keyboard player, grabbed a female dancer's legs, led other dances around on leashes and had another dancer simulate oral sex on him.

The network edited some of the more sexually graphic acts from the show's West Coast feed, but left in the kiss.

On Monday, ABC said it received 1,500 complaints about the performance, which led its morning show, Good Morning America, to cancel Lambert's previously scheduled Wednesday appearance.

Lambert, the runner-up on American Idol's eighth season earlier this year, said his performance is only deemed controversial because he is an openly gay man. He pointed to other parts of the show that could be considered inappropriate but were not edited and have not sparked an outcry.

Lady Gaga smashed bottles of whiskey as she sang, Eminem rapped about rape and Janet Jackson groped a male dancer, Lambert said.

"Janet Jackson, crotch grab," he said. "I haven't heard one peep about that."

According to Lambert, "if it had been a female pop performer doing (his) moves that were on the stage, I don't think there would be nearly as much of an outrage."

Melissa Henson of the Washington-based Parent Television Council refuted that claim, saying viewers complained en masse after Madonna kissed Britney Spears during the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003 and Janet Jackson exposed her breast during the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2004.

She also dismissed the suggestion that 1,500 complaints out of an estimated 14 million viewers makes for a tame protest.

"I don't think it's correct to so quickly dismiss the concerns of even 1,500 parents," Henson told CTV's Canada AM on Wednesday. "After all, the broadcast airwaves are owned by the American viewing public. And so if there are 1,500 people speaking out in protest to something that they've seen on television, I think that's a pretty good barometer that perhaps they've gone too far and perhaps the network needs to be more careful in the future, especially with awards show performances."

Before he began to sing on the Early Show, Lambert, seeming to bow to some of the public pressure, said, "Parents, this is appropriate, I promise."

During his interview, he would not apologize for the performance, and said parents who do not want their kids to see certain images must monitor what their kids view on television.

"I'm not a baby sitter," he said. "I'm a performer."

Matt Mills, editorial director of Pink Triangle Press, a Canadian gay and lesbian media organization, called Lambert's act an "entertaining and innocuous" act of artistic expression.

"I think he was definitely pushing the bounds of societal expectations, and I think that's a very healthy and important thing to do," Mills told Canada AM.

Mills also pointed out that, for fans who got to know him from his time on American Idol, his onstage antics may have been shocking. But it's likely the glam-rock, sexually charged persona is the real Adam Lambert.

"He was contractually obligated by American Idol to behave in a certain way," Mills said. "He showed up at Idol as a young guy just starting out on his career and turned out to be phenomenally successful. Now apparently those obligations to Idol are discharged and we can see the real Adam."

But Henson believes Lambert may have turned off some fans.

"From what I've been reading (online), a lot of people are saying 'I voted for him on American Idol but I was really turned off by this performance,'" Henson said. "So he may be undermining his own career by doing this."

Truly I don't think it was that bad... music today is all about sex and who can push the OMG button first I think if he was straight there wouldn't be a second thought I feel bad for him and wish him all the best I would watch him again with my children.

I'm glad he's not apologizing. The performance was crazy, hot and awesome - just like Adam! He's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but my response to them would be don't listen to/watch him if that's how you feel. I can't wait to get his album and I sincerely hope that he tours Canada with a stop here in Ottawa. That's one show I would be at for sure!

There is no need to apologize. People need to get over this. Americans particularly have to be a bit more open as to what is shown on TV. It's also not the first time 2 men have kissed on TV. Even if it were, who cares, it is the year 2009.

He is totally disgusting to watch and to listen to. If he is going to sing, just do that, don't scream out the words and we are not really interested in seeing his vulgarity, he can keep that is HIS closet. If we want to see porn we as adults know where to go for that. Don't expect to see it on an awards show.

He should not be sorry!!!! We see female performers practically naked every single day, and that seems to be alright. This fellow shares his sexuality and we go crazy. Homophobia, anyone?

I was unaware that Adam Lambert was gay when I viewed this performance. I was disgusted by his performance regardless as I was when Madonna pulled off her stunt. I feel sorry for the dancer who was forced to stick her face in that man's sweaty crotch. What a way to make a living. I guess I've learnt my lesson and watched AMA for the last time.

The only difference between Janet Jackson and Adam is he can't 'claim' a 'malfunction'. Easy to say wardrobe malfunction but not a performance malfunction. These performances are practiced how many times? If it was too racy for the viewing audience at 11:00 pm would the AMA not have had them tone it down??? This is not only great publicity for Adam but the AMAs as well.

It is a sad state of affairs when a "performer" can no longer perform. Lady Gaga is permitted to do all sorts of outrageous things as many of the other women are out there. So why not Adam. Get real people..shock sells and there should not be a double standard. If you can honestly look in the mirror and say the double standard is okay then go home and close your door and lock it. You'll be happier for it. For the rest of us who want equality across the board, and not only when it suits us..let the performers do their thing. If you didn't like it...change the channel and don't buy his album when it's released. He's a cross between Lady gaga/ Marilyn Manson/ David Bowie and I for one am curious to know if his music will stand up to his performances down the road. BTW I am female, straight and believe in the equal rights of EVERYONE.

Rock performers have been shocking audiences for generations and Adam is no different. Remember 20 years ago in Toronto when the authorities were considering charging Madonna with indecency for using religious symbols in "creative" ways - and kissing males and females on stage at her 'Like A Virgin" concert. Like Madonna, Adam is a smart (and talented) entertainer...and I expect the publicity he gets from ABC's decision not to have him will be worth more to him than if he was on the show. That's Entertainment!

If I want to go to a gay bar and watch the action that's my decision. To have it thrown in my face when I'm watching a normally "straight" TV show is another question altogether.... Doesn't matter if it's male or female "entertainers". I don't think the venue was appropriate.

If the real Adam is starting to shine maybe he should save it for his concerts! People can then choose to view his art(?) or not. TV shows, movies, even CDs are rated for a reason. We as Canadians are supposed to be proud of our diversity. We all have our own values and a rating system is used to draw the lines. Whether he performed at 11:00 p.m. or a.m. doesn't matter there was no "mature content" warning. These live award shows need to get their act together with censorship whether it is Adam, Britney, Janet etc.

Amazing artistic performance; that is what it is "art." Get over it people; art is real, it's alive; it's out there. We call for freedoms of expression in other countries but when we see artistic freedom of expression in our country from artists fully clothed we get all weird. Get a life people, please.

Was Lambert's performance right or wrong. It comes down to everyone's personal like an dislikes. I have to say, it was dangerous and I loved it. This was his debut as a performer. He wanted to start with a bang, and he did just that. Everyone will know him now and will talk about him for a long time to come, good or bad every now knows who Adam Lambert.

It's a shame that people can no longer watch a show that is supposed to be about appreciating music without being subjected to such vulgarity. Lewd acts, whether gay or straight, whether from Adam Lambert or Lady Gaga, have nothing to do with music. There is no excuse for anyone to engage in lewd acts before an unwitting and unwilling audience. It is vulgarity, pure and simple, and it should be confined to circumstances where the audience clearly wants and expects it.

I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad... that nothing was said about lady Gaga's antics or clothing attire. How much shock value does smashing whiskey bottles on a piano with your bum hanging out of your clothes give? And what about Janet Jackson's naughty grope or Eminem's rapping about rape. Istn't it also kind of ironic that you can see much of the same thing at any mall & no one bats an eye? It's a very, very mad world indeed.

As always mentioned and thought, Americans have way too much to complain about. You don't like it, fine, then don't watch it. Reality is there is Sex out there, there are gay people out there, and there are bad shows out there..grow up! Who cares what he did!! So what if he kissed a guy! Get on youtube and see all the "straight" guys kissing each other. Explain to me why this is worse than any suggestive stuff that Madonna has done, or Prince or Janet Jackson. What makes him a target? NOTHING..he is just real!! (bad singer, but real!)

Adam Lambert wasn't the only performer that had an offensive performance during the AMA's! The women were just as bad with all the thrusting and suggestive "dancing"...why is no one talking about that. This just sheds light on the public's double standards for what is acceptable. The rappers that had to be "bleeped" out were just as offensive too for the content. Sad that we are subjected to such poor taste in prime time. If someone wants to see that kind of stuff or listen to that kind of trash they can find a back street or club or buy the CD that is appropriately labeled!... A lot of what was shown as entertainment was definitely not made for prime time!I'll likely rethink use of my time when the AMA's air next year.

Too bad they brought him in at the end - it was the best performance of the night.

First of all Kids under 14 should not have been allowed to stay up and watch this. Parents who let them and then complained..give your heads a shake! The whole AMA this year had this very sexually charged bondage theme. All of the women even the country singers were wearing very short dresses. The numbers were sexually explicit right across the board. The only one that dressed modestly was Alicia Keyes but even she was wearing form fitting tights that left nothing to the imagination. Lady Gaga is a really freak..whats with the smashing bottles? All in the name of art and it certainly sells for them. Adam Lambert was dressed ok but continued with the sexually charged theme...no wonder ..he likely thought if you can't beat them..join them.I have always thought that Adam was a performer that out performed everyone who has ever been on American Idol. He showed his talent and professionalism by giving a performance that was a good as any of the others, even better than some that evening. I don't care if he is gay. He is a great talent and I think a nice human being. I am in my fifties. Get over it..this is what the public want or they wouldn't have been showing it all evening.

Personally, I wasn't offended by Adam's performance - though I wouldn't want my grandchildren to watch it. I was MUCH more offended by the fact that SO many of the other performances were rappers - they all looked and acted like gang members. I doubt that is truly what is MOST popular in American music today. The AMA performances should reflect what is most popular in American music.

I think his performance was ridiculously stupid. If he's trying to make a name for himself, of course he'll make a hit with one group, the other group would be disgusted. If I knew his performance was going to be such garbage and a waste of my time, I would not have watched it. There were other great things to watch on TV. Next time I know better.

This guy sounds like a live cat being fed tail first into a meat grinder. I don't get the appeal, but I'm not really into censorship either. The only thing I recommend is maybe a disclaimer if that kind of act is going to take place on a live tv show where there will be young adults or even kids watching. Put up a disclaimer coming out of commercial break and let parents make the call as to whether or not their kids get to watch.

If the show were billed as the "American Sexual Diversity Extravaganza", then people would have no right to complain. But it was called the "American Music Awards." I pity any parent out there who allowed their children to watch as a way of encouraging their interest in the arts. Singing is art, but public indecency is not.

I can only imagine how bad the live feed was. Good on ABC for sending a message to Lambert that they won't tolerate the inappropiate behaviour. And shame on him for rehearsing a tamed down performance to get it past producers. I for one will not be buying his CD.

I certainly would not have voted for him on Idol if I had heard him perform this way. The antics are just that - antics. I think all performers should 'tone it down' for tv - men and women both. Too many 'artists' can't sing worth a bean these days.

I thought the performance was revolting, and the lunge at the male singer to "suck face", which is exactly what that was, was self serving and self indulgent. Last I checked the latest Spears music video airing for the world to see is all about 3, the underlying message that three is a party compared to two. Further the video has her prancing around naked. Double standard? The actions of ABC and subsequent comments surrounding his "risque" performance are uncalled for.

This "shocking" performance was a business decision, and evidently a good one. Who remembers runners up on a talent show? It's hard enough to remember the winners. The odd American Idol winner is halfways memorable, but most are highly forgettable mediocrities, and only the concerted effort of the massive Idol media machine keeps them in the public eye for a year or two to create the appearance that winning on American Idol leads to success.Lambert doesn't have that full backing. However, his musical intepretations were notably unique and memorable, unlike the usual Idol pop-mediocrity. He's leveraging the buzz he created from his idol performances plus his current antics to get attention and to propel his career forward. It's working, too. It's Lambert, not what's-his-face who actually won, who's making front-page news.Anyway, I like him. If he manages not to self-destruct, I think he could do some good things and have a real career, like Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Or a better comparison might be Clay Aiken - another gay runner-up who is much more memorable than the unremarkable nobody who actually won.

He should never apologize. Cher has been doing this sort of thing since the beginning of TV, Madonna since the 80's and well, all the "starlets" who sing such as Britney has been rubbing herself all over the place since it was legal for her to do so.. Just because a gay man does it doesn't suddenly make it wrong. We are all equal. I hate his music but hope he does the same sort of performance again and again. Only prissy religious creeps and bigots have issues with this.
