Gasoline made from the yields of Alberta's tarsands is "the dirtiest possible alternative" for producing fuel, says former U.S. vice president-turned climate change crusader Al Gore, and only serves to increase the amount of pollution in the atmosphere at a time when the world is trying to control emissions and slow down global warming.

Gore, who is in Toronto for a speaking engagement and a series of media interviews, said Wednesday that continuing to develop the oilsands represents the choice of money over the health of the planet, ignoring the potential consequences for future generations.

"Gasoline made from the tarsands would give a Toyota Prius the carbon footprint of a General Motors Hummer. And to go for the dirtiest possible alternative, that vastly increases the amount of global warming pollution at a time when the world is desperately trying to reach an agreement to reduce that pollution, is obviously not the right way to go," Gore told CTV's Canada AM.

"I understand that a lot of money is at stake, but often the choice we have to make comes down to whether we're focused only on short-term profits at the expense of the health of the planet and the security for our children, (and) at the end of the day that's not really a difficult choice."

Gore had much the same message for a sold-out crowd of 1,300 in Toronto Tuesday night, where he called on politicians to act quickly to enact legislation that would replace dirty energy sources with cleaner alternatives.

His speech also served as a fundraiser for the David Suzuki Foundation, which has aligned itself with Gore's The Climate Project.

On Tuesday, the two climate change activists unveiled the new Canadian chapter of The Climate Project, which is comprised of 250 volunteers, trained by Gore, who will travel the country and give climate change speeches.

A new website, www.climateprojectcanada.org, also features information for Canadians about how to reduce their carbon footprint.

During his Canada AM appearance, Gore dismissed the suggestion that some scientists dispute the idea of man-made climate change, saying there will always be those looking for a reason to ignore the crisis.

"The scientific consensus is now unprecedented," Gore said. "The 3,000 scientists from around the world who've studied this for 20 years, the leading professionals in their fields, now say the evidence is unequivocal. And there are those who would like to pretend that it's okay to dump 90 million tons every day of global warming pollution into the atmosphere as if it's an open sewer, even though the science has long told us that it traps more heat, it's melting the North Polar ice cap and the glaciers of the world."

Gore also rejected as "madness" the idea some scientists have put forth to reverse global warming by releasing volcanic ash into the atmosphere for its natural cooling effect.

"Trying to counteract the impact of global warming by putting vast amounts of pollution to darken the sky, to try to block out the sun, is madness, really," he said. "The real solution is to stop putting the global warming pollution up there in such large quantities."

According to Gore, with a rapidly growing world population relying more and more heavily on oil and coal, which is pumping massive amounts of C02 and other pollutants into the atmosphere, is sending global temperatures skyrocketing.

The price of inaction to get such devastating change under control, Gore said, is staggering.

"The deeper droughts, stronger floods, diseases moving northward from the tropics into the temperate latitudes, the climate refugees that are already beginning to flow, it's a trickle but will become a flood if we don't act," Gore said.

"And if we in the present generation decided to just take advantage of all the sacrifices and work of those who came before us and use it for ourselves and give the back of our hand to all those who come after us, that would be an immoral act."

And yet the US still pollutes the most of any country in the world. How about you worry about the CONSUMPTION of oil, then the PRODUCTION will decrease? Oh and the slash and burn of the rain forest in South America contributes 35% of the CO2 on a global scale. How about we point all the fingers and stop focusing on a very small portion of the world production of CO2? Hmmmm?

If Al Gore really cared about the environment why doesn't he stay at home a do all these interviews through a video connection? Instead of flying to all these cities and giving his presentation, can't he just mail them a copy of his DVD? He is creating quite the carbon footprint for things that aren't needed....Maybe he thinks he's above all of us peasants.

Well, he is still sticking to the global warming scare even after the emails from the CRU were released on the internet this past weekend. That is the same CRU that provides the "scientific" info to the IPCC. Seems the whole thing is a farce and that the data was manufactured contrary to actual events.I wonder why the MSM isn't reporting it but is still promoting the Gore agenda? You would think it would be at least researched.

The released emails are damning, but the released data files tell the story. We've been lied to. We've been tricked. And Al Gore and the likes of David Suzuki have profited from it.Leave the tar sands alone Al ... you are a huckster. And CTV ... it's time you start covering the story; UK and USA officials are warming up to investigations, yet you are silent.

To Adam in Monteal. Before you go throwing stones please consider that your "have not" province has benifitted very well from our resouces. Also please consider that it is in fact Quebec and Ontario that demand most of the oil in Canada overall. It's pretty cheap and easy to bash Alberta...I understand it's a common eastern pass time, but I would challenge you to really study how much concern for the envoronment Alberta accually commits to. We currently have tougher laws than any other provice in the country. Do you know how much oil it takes to deliver oil from overseas? Just some things to think about.

Al Gore has a agenda and will never be swayed away from that agenda. I would like to know why a country of 33 million people are so important to climate change? Ontario has 4 coal power plants and not a lot more in the rest of the country. We are expected to pay a fee for carbon credits if we produce too much carbon. That my friends is a fantasy in some boardrooms dream. We have 4 coal plants in Ontario. There are over 600 in the U S A , over 800 in China and adding 5 more every 2-4 weeks.......yes every 2-4 weeks and that's only the ones the Chinese Rulers know about since there are many illegal plants in the country. The Rulers of China should think about putting up wind mills instead of any more coal plants but that would not benefit all the wind coming out of the boardrooms as they try to transfer wealth from western countries to cheaper labor ruled countries. A note to David Suzuki, Al Gore and associated wind bags: If everyone in Canada disappeared December 1 2009 it would not make a lick of a difference on the worlds supposed carbon footprint.......yes not even a % of 1 %. So get your lying no good two faced hands out of Canadian tax payers pockets.Waterloo Rick

Lord Monkton has issued several challenges to Al Gore to publically debate the contentious issue of Climate Change and how going forward with the Copenhagen Conference with adversely affect the economies of the world. One has to assume that Mr Gore has either not read the Wall Street Journal and other major US newspapers regarding the CRU documents and emails - copies of which those journals have in their possession - or chooses not to know. As for his description of the oil sands fuels, perhaps he would be better off without fuel at all. Then he could stay home, enjoy his ill-gotten gains and not have to proudly pay a "carbon offset". And what do the companies who collect carbon offsets do with the money - apart from the executives giving themselves large bonuses for gulling so many people? But one has to admire mr Gore: he is a snake-oil salesman par excellence!

Al Gore does not have to say anything. Just look around you. It all should just make sense to all individuals. Our species is taking everything this planet has to offer for granted. Everything we consume has tripled in the last 50 years. Cars, shopping, waste, e-waste, sewage, construction, water usage, energy consumption, food production..it's all so wrong. This post WWII philosophy that was forced upon us is based on a linear system which has altered man's behavior. We have a lot to learn from our ancestors who did things the right way. My grand-mother was a good woman that didn't need to go to Wal-mart to get what she needed in order to keep the family fed and happy. And she didn't lay down in front of the TV whatching "What not to wear" every night. We can go back to that way of life however as a bonus we have technology that will give our lives the same comfort level. It's all around us just look and realise what we have become. It affects the whole cycle, the cycle of life of which we are part and yet, of which we have become so distant. But our leaders are just fear change.

Alberta doesn't need any other employment sectors - you are a typical Gore sheeple, have you ever looked at the largest polluters in Canada? Yes the oilsands are right near the top but I'm afraid to let you know that the industries (smelting/mining) in Quebec and Ontario actually claim the top prize followed by the oilsands and then the pulp and paper industry in BC. Also Alberta has the most strict regulations and as of yesterday the largest contributor to cleaning up the environment. Mr Gore won't let you know that as the oilsands are the pet of the day. The solution you are looking for (reducing the oilsands) could very easily be done by taking some Albertans over to towns like Sarnia and show them what the long term side effects of the pollution is.

Al Gore is a downright hypocrite when it comes to the environment! After all, wasn't it him who originally negotiated NAFTA, which mandated that Canada export at least 60% of its oil to the United States, even if it came from tar sands? And about his idea of using carbon taxes and cap and trade systems, they will not do anything to help the environment. All that would cause is harm to the consumer, especially low-income earners who may not be able to afford more energy efficient equipment. Don't get me wrong, I still believe there are real environmental problems to resolve (e.g. clear cutting, excessive fossil fuel consumption, smog, dirty water, genetically modified products, etc.), but Gore's proposed solutions will not get us anywhere.

What a crock, people throwing stones at Alberta. As soon as others stop flooding millions of acres of land with James Bay-sized projects because of the economic benefit ... stop re-routing rivers into canals for golf course irrigation ... stop using coal as their primary source of electricity ... stop using heating oil as their means for heating their houses ... stop flying across the country for 1-day meetings ... then, we can have a reasonable conversation.People from elsewhere hate Alberta because of some simple-minded stereotypes ... they forget that our oilpatch investors are the Dutch, the Chinese, the US, and every other multi-national energy producer in the world. Our workers are Quebecers, Ontarians, Newfoundlanders, Nova Scotians, and new immigrants from around the world. As long as the Gore's and Suzuki's of the world are flying 3 times a week for their next egg-throwing exercise, there will always be a need for conventional oil. Let's get going with the investment into greener technologies already, and accelerate the changeover. I'm not going to defend the merits of oil ... I'm just saying let's stop the argument to stop oil production, because it is a non-starter, we are too dependent on it merely to live in our diverse climates of the world. Until a reasonable alternative exists that won't cripple the economy, oil will be with us for a very long time.

From human rights to UN peace keeping troops; education and healthcare, there are many reasons to be proud to be Canadian. Unfortunately, on the climate crisis, we're lagging behind to an embarassing extent. To respond to your question, I think you're focused on the wrong side of our small population. As a country of only 33 million people, and a relatively rich one at that, we are uniquely positioned to be a world leader on fighting climate change. It's not only a moral issue, but an economic one. Being evironmentally sustainable makes us more efficient and grows our economy in the long term. Look at Sweden - another freezing cold country where they've had a carbon tax in place for like 20 years. Their economy is doing incredible. And yes, our CO2 output is tiny as compared to China, but if we're ever going to hope to have a credible leg to stand on when urging them to clean up their air, we've got to lead by example.

Are Canadians deranged? We’ve carved out an existence at the very northern fringe of civilization. Natural Global Warming is the only reason why we’ve been able to do so. For the last 100,000 years Canada has been under ice or so cold you couldn’t live here. Warming has existed for small 10,000 year chunks, one of which we are now at the end of. Get a brain people.Add to this that the data files, not the emails, in the CRU hack show clear fraud. Everyone one of you people who believe in AGW have been bamboozled ... lied to ... tricked. Get off your supercilious green bottoms and simply read the information coming out about the data files and if you still believe, then you are indeed hopelessly religious in your zeal. It’s not whether or not AGW is real, it’s that there is no consensus ... none, and what consensus there is depends on cooked up science. Even the scientists who “believe” do so because they have trusted the handful who have done the basic research ... and now that handful are being exposed as frauds. And to CTV is say; don’t you think it’s time to become sceptical of Al Gore. After all, the antonym of sceptical is gullible.

OK to all the slaggers of Al Gore. Feel better now. Revenue considerations aside, there has been alot of study on the environmental impact of the tarsands and none of it is particularly heart warming. The point is, oil and gas deposits are non renewable and at some point they will run out. The cost of extracting and using that resource will continue to rise. Why aren't we shifting our focus over to green technologies that are renewable. Like the space race to the moon triggering the microcomputer revolution, green technology could trigger a whole new area of technology innovation and job creation. I'm just saying.

@Trent,Nobody (including myself) ever said that other provinces don't have polluting industries as well - however Alberta is one of the only ones that's putting all it's eggs into one basket (even after the recent events of the recession that caused all that unemployment over there). It was the perfect time to lobby the fed. and prov. governments for funding to nurture more diversity in terms of industries and at the same time remove dependence on such a polluting one while embracing newer in-demand technologies. But hey it's better to keep believing the lie that oil is all you need / keep the electorate uninformed, uneducated and dependent and you can control their votes.

Rudolph Diesel examined the wasteful steam engine, and decided that he could build a better system than ran on vegetable oil. A man once said that the Stone Age did not end because we ran out of rocks. The incandescent light bulb is starting to go out of production. Perhaps it is time to replace the internal combustion engine. We can do better; but not with an electric car that is charged by a coal fired power plant, thank-you.

I love how people from eastern Canada and elsewhere in the world like to jump all over Alberta for our environmental record. When in fact 95% of wind power production in Canada comes from Alberta. Edmonton leads the world with it's recycling program. 60% of all house hold garbage is being composted, and is currently being increased to 90%. Anything in the garbage that is recyclable is recycled. Calgary is currently in the process of adopting this same type of system. Edmonton also treats their sewage to the point of being drinkable and turns it's solid sewage into composte. There are also plans to build plants in Alberta that create, biogas from cow manure which feeds a powerplant, which powers an wheat based ethanol plant, and the mash from the wheat is fed back to the cows.So before you go pointing fingers at our environmental practices, maybe you should have a look at what's going on in your own backyard.

If there really is global wasrming, and "if" is the operative word,we should address the issue on two fronts. One,we should be looking to developing technology that will provide the energy of the future. As of now,it does not exist at a cost that can maintain even the basic things we need to produce and deliver food to millions of starving people.Until it exists,we all need to use energy as wisely as possible.Given the cost of energy, most people do try.Second, and equally important ,is preparing to deal for a warmer climate if it does happen.Canadians who think we can make a difference to the climate,in the absence of action by the really big polluters, are deluding themselves. If we impoverish ourselves, and the other developed nation, whi will do the research that brings newer and cleaner energy to us? A program needs money. But science needs time to go along with those dollars. To the Alberta bashers,I suggest you give up the whining.Tens of billions of needed dollars flow all over Canada every year. Those dollars are also needed for research, healt care, and all the other "free" programs the socialists from the east line up to demand. As long asd oil is still needed,I suggest you join them in looking to clean up the process, instead of suggesting it simply be shut down.Freezing in the dark is not an option, given that total greenhouse emmissions from Canada cannot save the planet. If we could,I would likely have a different view. The day our "eastern masters" say that Alberta is no longer welcome in Canada,is the day I support taking the entire west out of a broken confederation.Domination by Ontario is not what was promised when we were asked to join the Confederation of Canada.I love this nation as much as anyone. But,BACK OFF ONTARIO.Do not test our resolve.

Being from (and living in) coastal NL, I think we should be putting windmills everywhere too....but then we'd piss off the people who would have concerns about which bird or bat would be stupid enough to fly into them! No matter what the source, there will be an issue....but like I said before...it's not only the oilsands that are polluting, and everyone seems to like the extremely high paying jobs that are boosting the economy. I'd say most people who complain about this have never even been to the areas in question. The nature is thriving and people are as healthy as anywhere else, so it can't be that devastating!!

Mark SaidWe should look at it as a moral issue. You have to be kidding right? Sorry Mark but China, India and most of the world have been living under political regimes that have kept there people living just above the caveman and now all of a sudden western nations are supposed pony up there money to bring them out of the stone age? Why should we be forced to send our money because that is what it is (sending our money) to these people. Have you really been brain washed into thinking that the leaders of regimes like the one in China give a flying fig about supposed climate change? So on a (moral) ground China has been around a few thousand years before Canada and maybe they should be leading morally of course. Maybe they should cease building any more coal power plants and tear down any built in the last seven years . They could replace them with windmills. I suggest you get a good calculator out to figure out how many windmills they will need. Why do you think companies move to countries like China and Mexico? It has near nothing to do with wages. It has everything to do with no environmental rules, no human rights to worry about shall I continue? So I ask you why in the world should we be trying to lead a nation like China when they do not give a stuff what we think or do nor will what we do make a shred of a difference. Except of course it really is all about the money and nothing to do with Planet Earth to them. I almost forgot human rights. Damn that's because there are none in China. The UN? Al Gore talks the talk but hardly "walks the walk". Personal jets, SUVs, huge electric bills for his place in Tennessee as were produced under a Freedom of Information Act request by a local TV station, intersts in a firm which wants to sell carbon credits (which do not reduce pollution, just move it around and transfer money from first world countries to others like China which is hardly third world any more), etc. all cast less than a favourable light on his evangelism. It reminds me of the tent preacher and his preaching - sort of an Elmer Gantry type. Once upon a time Joan Baez sang folk songs about poverty and suffering to her audience of rapt listeners, and them left in her limo with her retinue. Al Capp supposedly used her as a model for his parody folk singer in his comic strip - Joannie Phony - and the situation really invites a comparison.

The study said that if anything climate change would reduce the effects of hurricanes in the Caribbean and other places in the world. Hurricanes need a lot of moisture to survive and in a climate change act, this could not happen, there would be more Sahara Dust in in the Atlantic. This was a project done for the National Huricane Center in Miami. Al Gore and David Suzuki must stop touting that every person individually is responsible and can make a difference with global warming. The problem is not people’s habits or attitude towards consumption. I am tired of feeling like I the only one trying to make a difference while everyone around me still drives huge cars and trucks. The only way is to stop it is with laws and policies, yes it must be forced on the populations of the world. One of the biggest crimes of all times is to allow the import of any product that can be made locally. Stop buying energy efficient bulbs produced in other countries were their own environment laws are lax.

Remember to raise the temperature 1C would require 2 trillion tonnes of CO2, since we currently product about 100 million tonnes per year it would take shutting down all industry and economic activilty for 20 years to stop a 1C rise in temperature. This information is not readily avavilable from the IPCC , you have to work it out for yourself, although the information to do so is. Now who does not want to work, travel, eat or pretty much everything else.

He should look into some reall scientific research. Almost everything that he preaches is refuted by thousands of peer reviewed, independent scientific studies. In the words of an old "Times" Review, "his mind and book contain very little science and even less humanity." When he stops polluting this planet to the extent he does (have you ever seen the facts on his residence?) then he might be a little more credible. Until then he should hide with shame. This is nothing short of political posturing at its jingoistic best. He must already be trying to run against her ladyship from Alaska. What a deep thinking contest that will be!!!

I burn about 15 litres per day going to work (shame on me) but Al Gore will burn 500 litres (amount per person) on any 10 hour flight. That's over a month of driving for me but only one day for Al Gore. Definition of hipocracy: see Gore or Suzuki

Absolutely everything we do to combat pollution, global warming poverty, etc, etc is a waste of time. The real problem is overpopulation, overpopulation and increasing overpopulation. The world cannot sustain itself with the current population, in 4 years it will be another half billion or more. People understandably want and need to be fed, clothed, housed, drive cars (whether hummers or toyoto prius's doesn't matter. The fact is every living creature wants more, whether you're a dog, cow or human they all want more and better. The old aren't dying as fast as the young are born and everyone wants to live to a hundred (next decade they'll want to live to 110). We spend trillions of dollars a year producing vaccines, surgical procedures, etc and that keep more people alive longer so the problem is compounding. Lets get these green politicians focusing on the real issue, combating overpopulation. Stop sending medical aid to countries whose people believe in 10 children per family. And stop allowing these people to immigrate to western countries that have sufficient populations already. Canada with 40million is plenty populated. Europe is full, so is the USA, Australia, New Zealand. The list is longer. We don't need more people, we need about 4 billion less.

Climate change is an important issue for Canadians. As such, it deserves a constructive dialogue, one based on scientific facts. One such fact is that the world needs energy. Mr. Gore’s reference to the dramatic energy shift is out of step with recent reports from international energy bodies that show global demand for energy of all kinds is increasing, not decreasing. We need to expand renewable sources of energy. And if energy demand doubles by 2050 (as forecasted by the International Energy Agency), we’ll also need oil and gas – Canadian oil and gas. Another fact—according to the most recent external analysis on crude oil life-cycle emissions, Mr. Gore’s math simply doesn’t add up.Looking at the life-cycle GHG emissions from gasoline —from when the oil comes out of the ground and is used in cars—crude derived from oil sands is in the same range as other crude oils imported into the North American (and lower than some U.S. domestic sources). In fact, even a one or two mile per gallon increase in Mr. Gore’s car’s (or his plane’s) fuel efficiency makes up for the difference between oil sands and light oil sent from Saudi Arabia. What's a one or two mile increase in vehicle mileage in CO2 terms? It's like turning a Nissan Sentra (26 MPG) into a Nissan Altima (23 MPG), not "turning a Prius into a Hummer" as Gore attests. What’s more, oil sands producers are focused on continuing to close that CO2 gap, having already reduced oil sands emissions 33 per cent per barrel since 1990. We’ll achieve even more CO2 reductions through technology– all while keeping Canada’s energy flowing and the economy moving. Janet AnnesleyVice President Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers

So what is Mr. Gore doing to reduce his footprint? Has he sold his mansions and he and Tippper moved to a very small one room enviro friendly house? Does he conduct his speaking engagements on the internet rather than using a private jet to fly him around the world? Has Tipper given up her designer gowns and clothes for some green hemp designs? Has he used his millions to purchase stands of the rain forest? Perhaps the limo he rides in is secretly powered by someone a bicycle under the hood. Does he live by example or is he merely an example of how to make a whole lot of money from pretending to be concerned about the environment? Is it time we faced the facts and reduced consumption and lived less extravagant lives? Yes, but the fact of the matter is that while he was in government the American economy did well because they were selling the American Dream, big car, big house, big boat, big bank account, big vacation, private jet, etc.. I did not see him double the price of gasoline to cut consumption while he was in government. It is hard to trust someone who preaches one thing and does another.

You cannot change the shifting angles of our planet, the gravitational alignment altering the tides or the sunspot cycles and the relationship between planets, solar systems and galaxies not to mention the unknown power of the dark energy, without bringing God into it. What I hear from the climate prophet Al is: " Pay the climate taxes and your live will be sparedThat sounds very much like the old time religion. However, having said that I do like the outcome of curbing pollution giving us all a better air to breeze, I cannot wait for the day, when all cars are electric giving us a quieter cleaner world.

Gore knows little about the tar sands. The fact is that just leaving them there naturally would cause worse environmental damage than mining them. Here's why:The reason they are called TAR SANDS or OIL SANDS is because there are hundreds of billions of barrels of oil laying in the sand at the earth's surface. Now, look at the Athabasca river system. Suncor has a plant right on its bank. Before melting from the end of the last ice age this land had no Athabasca river valley. After the river route to the Arctic Ocean opened up, the Athabasca river system was formed by eroding these sands saturated with oil. This eroded-out oil ran north to the MacKenzie River and ultimately to the Arctic Ocean - billions of barrels of it. That erosion is still happening to this day. Every spring, every rainstorm, more of this oil-saturated sand erodes into the river. Also, the reason this oil is "heavy" is because over the centuries much of the lighter parts of it has evaporated into the air due to its being near the surface. (butanes, etc.)Neither of those "natural" processes is healthy for the environment, especially due to the massive amounts of oil laying up there. Now that companies are mining and using these oilsands, they are actually doing something similar to cleaning up a toxic waste site. Sure, it's messy right now. But that's kind of like the construction phase when building a city park.In a number of decades the oil will be extracted, the land cleaned all up, trees planted and everything back in a natural state, and much cleaner than leaving nature continue the pollution by erosion and evaporation of the oil. What say you to that, Al Gore?

Climate change which occures due to much larger factors happens because of much larger factors (ocean currents, greenhouse gasses, ex...) CO2 from the tarsands is such a small percentage that I find it hypocritical he would even try preaching to Canadains. Fix your own country before you look to ours.... I don't really understand why they are going to travel the world to talk to us? There are no other options for us to use. Maybe they should travel to the major oil consuming companies or those who make products that depend on oil and talk to them. I think it's funny how GM has littered the commercials with "the most fuel efficient cars and trucks on the road" all of a sudden. This type of technology doesn't happen in a couple months. Which says to me that they had it for a while and have been sitting on it. It wasn't until the people said "sorry we are not buying your crap" when they finally started to make more efficient vehicles. What else are they sitting on, waiting until they are almost bankrupt before releasing. People still need to live, we can't use an alternative source of energy at double the price. So NO AL GORE, go sell this to them first.
