OTTAWA — Stephane Dion has reaffirmed his unwavering support for Michael Ignatieff, despite his wife's dim view of the man who replaced her husband as Liberal leader.

Janine Krieber set Liberal tongues wagging on the weekend with a Facebook posting in which she slammed Ignatieff as an intellectual dilettante who is incapable of pulling the party out of what she deems its death spiral.

She broadly hinted she's thinking of switching allegiance to another party.

Ignatieff wouldn't comment directly on Krieber's musings, which were deleted shortly after she posted them.

But he said the only thing that matters is that Dion himself has assured him of his support.

"I just spoke to Stephane," Ignatieff said Monday.

"Stephane is a colleague and friend and has given me absolutely magnificent support throughout my leadership."

Francesco Miele, a spokesman for Dion, said the former leader won't be commenting on his wife's tirade other than to stress that "he's always been loyal to his leaders and his party and he'll always be."

Other Liberals were playing down the impact of Krieber's pessimistic prediction that their party is headed for the dustbin of history.

"Well, she has her own history, her own views," said Liberal finance critic John McCallum.

"I don't think she's an opinion leader within the Liberal party and therefore I don't think the story is going to last."

NDP Leader Jack Layton, meanwhile, dodged questions about whether Krieber has made any overtures about joining his party.

"Well, of course we're watching the conflicts that are going on in the Liberal party. It's kind of hard to avoid. But I'm paying attention to our own party," he said.

"So far, our members and their spouses too, I guess ... seem to be working as a team and we're going to pay attention to that objective."

We must remember that we had a chnace to pick a good leader at the convention and thanks to Mr Kennedy - Dion won - This should not have happened. Once it did many card carrying Liberals gave up on the party - Mr Dion was never and never will be a leader.I am not saying the present leader is best - but Mr Dion did nothing to improve the party.

Interesting. Watching a great party fall apart. Sad really and I don't think that they wil come out of the doldrums until they get a whoping like the Conservatives did. Sometimes it takes a big shock to wake up the party elite and have them move over for younger blood to take over the lead. The old saying that "we learn by our mistakes" fits here perfectly. They have some old horses in the barn that need to be put out to pasture and the quicker they do it the better for them. Starting with McCallum and working down from there. I know that the Liberl posters on here won't like this, but the truth hurts

As far as I can see, Mr. Harper has absolutely nothing to worry about with the Liberal party. Mr. Harper can just carry on doing a marvelous job running our country, and the Liberals just keep digging a little deeper every day. Looks good on them though, with their "high and mighty" attitude that they have had for decades now..........its kind of like the David and Goliath story........dontcha think?"CONSERVATIVES WIN MAJORITY" stay tuned....

Gee, Iggy and his crowd actually went on record as saying her opinion doesn't matter. Is it because they don't like her opinion or the fact that she's a "mere woman"? They may not like her opinion but at least she's honest....(what did the promise Dion to shut her up anyway?)Either way, Iggy and his corrupt party will be replaced by something new. Canadians are tired of the same old-same old and usual suspects making backroom deals.

Yes Joanne in Barrie, Harper has done a fabulous job. Instead of answering questions in the HOC on Afghan torture abuse, he's out gallavating for photo ops with the lacrosse team. Oh what a great job he's doing. blah! At least the Liberal Party doesn't muzzle their members and are allowed to speak up if they don't like something. Yes, Harper is doing a fabulous job.

We all know the Liberal Party is in deep trouble and many Liberals have reportedly said Ignatieff is responsible for alot of there troubles! Krieber confirms this even though her husband does not seem to support her view of Ignatieff ! The Liberals do not want an election at this time because they know they will get slaughtered at the polls and the Conservatives would have an majority ! Jack is said to be thinking about those few seats he may take from the Liberals and maybe his party becoming the official opposition party. Stranger things have happened!

How embarrassing to be forced to publicly trash his wife by providing "absolute magnicent support" to Iggy.A public figure should not be forced into such humiliation. Sad day for Liberal politics, and for women's rights.

The Liberals are in a rut. They keep doing the same thing over an over again and it doesn't work over and over again. They try to smear to Conservatives with the flimsiest of charges that even the mainstream media can't transform into fact in the public mind however hard they try. They look so sleazy carrying on like this. You'd think they'd get the idea that this tactic doesn't work and try something new. Maybe that's all they got.

This is damage control. The Liberal Party really isn't doing too well. Maybe the recent cabinet reshuffle and new chief of staff from Michael Ignatieff will help the party out but the guy has been immersed in the academia culture for so long that he is a fish out of water when it comes to politics.

Janine Krieber is a scholar and well respected political science professor at a prestigious Canadian university. Ignatieff is a professor at an American university. It's not surprsing they have a wide difference of opinion on the current Liberal leadership in Canada. She has a valid point that the Liberal party has some troubles. Denying that troubles exist and bashing anyone who says anything differently seems a ridiculous approach by the current male liberal leaders.

Dion is always the gentleman. I'm sure that off the record, he agrees wholeheartedly with his wife.

Hey "bellainottawa": You can carp all you like about Harper's alleged "shortcomings", but let's let the truth speak for itself:- After a reasonably strong honeymoon, Ignatieff is currently polling lower than Dion- Harper's polling numbers have been steady, with occasional spikes into majority territory- In three elections the Conservatives have grown their seat count, while the Liberals continue to lose seats (and don't give me that tripe on how the electorate "stopped" Harper from getting a majority; that's thanks to the BQ in Quebec; if Ignatieff suddenly found a clue, he likely wouldn't get a majority, either)- poll after poll shows Harper to be the preferred choice as PM, the best to handle the current economic situation, etc. Ignatieff often polls below Layton on these measures. The truth hurts; just sayin'...

Joanne from Barrie you got it wrong but Portes has got it soooo right!. Joanne, even thought I have voted for Mulroney and Harris, I will never vote for the Reformed Conservative Party. It's the first time in my 45 years of voting that I have known a party to be so deceitful and so economical with the Truth! With this statement all other parties and most media have agreed with. Yes its difficult, to vote for any other party but I just can't vote for the Reformed Conservative Party under Harper's leadership!

I read about others speaking for Dion in this story. Dion himself gives no indication about who he agrees with - his wife or Ignatieff.

I can't believe how the people in the Liberal party all seem to be out to squash each other. This has been happening for years. I know stuff like this happens in all political parties but the Liberals seem to take it to an all new level. For Liberals to keep brushing this stuff off is not helping thier cause. They are looked at as being opportunistic and power hungry. I have trouble seeing them ever coming together in enough of a cohesive unit to win power and stop the in fighting. Saying that a person who trashes the leader is irrelevant in the party and thier opinion carries no weight doesn't instill confidence

Just what bottom-of-the-polls Iggy needs, Dion's "unwavering support" - LOL

It's been said before, I know but someone has to hear it.The constant digging for dirt and mudslinging is bringing the party down in the polls. The infighting which started with Paul Martin trying to oust Chretien and goes on to this day has completely fragmented what once was a good party.I doubt that I'll ever go back to voting Liberal nor could I ever back either of the three protest parties.I just want someone to manage the country.
