DUNCAN, B.C. — The rain continued to fall as Vancouver Island residents assessed the flood damage to homes in and around Duncan.

They have a huge mess to clean up after a mix of heavy rain, melting snow and high tides left hundreds of homes doorknob-deep in water Friday.

More than 300-homes were evacuated.

The flood waters are receding and the evacuees are returning to the homes deemed safe for habitation -- but it may be a while before life returns to normal.

Joe Barry of the Cowichan Valley Regional District says the community is pulling together, and offers of donations and financial support are pouring in.

The province says it will cover up to 80 per cent of flood damage costs up to a maximum of 300-thousand dollars.
