Frank McKenna, a former Canadian ambassador to the United States, says recent criticism against Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff fits with how the Canadian public views political leaders.

Playing down the abilities of politicians is just part of our culture, he said. That's been the case at least since the time of former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

"I think this just follows a trend that we love to hate our leaders," McKenna said on CTV's Canada AM. "We love to try to tear down the tall poppies in our country."

He described Ignatieff, who has seen his approval rating fall in recent months, as a "world-leading intellectual."

"It's early days and this is not a bad time to be going through some growing pains," he said. "He's learning as he goes. He's reorganized his office, and he's just going to be fine."

McKenna is on a tour promoting a new biography about his life, written by author Harvey Sawler.

An experienced and popular politician, McKenna served as Liberal premier of New Brunswick from 1987-1997. He was awarded the Order of Canada last week.

McKenna also had some advice for Canada's new ambassador in Washington, former Manitoba premier Gary Doer.

"You need someone who can communicate well and, in my view, be a passionate and ardent defender of things Canadian," McKenna said.

"You just don't walk in and say 'Mr. President, let's fix this, this and this.' You've got to get every member of Congress, or some of the more important ones, on side. And you have to try to get some kind of receptivity from the American public, and that's hard to do."

McKenna left his post as ambassador in 2006. He is now deputy chair of TD financial Group, where he said he has enjoyed "relative obscurity."

In the biography Sawler paints McKenna, who is sometimes referred to as the 'greatest prime minister Canada never had,' in a positive light.

The book's release makes McKenna feel "just like being a bug under a microscope," he joked. "Being in the public spotlight again is just as uncomfortable as when I was in it before."

Been a long time since we had a real leader.

I think I'll be a "passionate and ardent defender of all things Canadian" by saying that while Canada has been described as a melting pot of culture, we are not a melting pot of thought or opinion. As such, for Mr. McKenna to say that Canadians "love to hate our leaders" is just ridiculous and wrong. I will always support leaders who are integerous and stand for what is responsible and truth. I am disappointed in leaders who cave-in on moral matters or where there is corruption or a lack of responsibility. To speak for me as a Canadian and say that I 'hate' them is irresponsible.

McKenna is plain wrong on the Canadian perception of Ignatieff. Ignatieff is only after the job of P.M., thinking he does not need majority support of the people.

Why would Canada want a leader who does not care about his image, or even care about his fellow Canadians. Ignatieff only has blind ambition.

Canadians are not stupid followers. We know a dud leader like Ignatieff.

Ignatieff needs to go, as in get lost, and Liberals need to elect a new Liberal leader - the good old fashioned way, like when they actually voted for a leader.

Ummm...last time I checked, it was Robert L. Stanfield who was known as the "Best Prime Minister Canada Never Had." If this is McKenna's new title, it's news to me.

Iggy may be a great intellectual, but he's already proven that he still has a lot to learn about being a politician, let alone a leader.

Ignatieff may be a "world leading intellectual" but he has reversed himself and lied so many times that he's no longer credible. That's something Liberals just don't get.Raise taxes, don't raise taxes. Call an election, don't call an election. Didn't sign Coalition Agreement, signed coalition agreement. And we can't forget he voted against Home Renovation Tax Credit, shelving the Firearms registry, and EI extensions.

I have never voted for a Lieberal in my life. However if Frank McKenna was to run for PM I would consider it based on his integrity. He understands doing the right job for the people, and not just himself. He did an outstanding job in NB.

Ignatieff may be a "world leading intellectual "BUT" there is more needed than just that to be a good leader. For example: you can be the best hockey player in the world, but not a good coach, just ask Gretzky

I resent being characterized as some Canadian yokel who loves to hate our leaders. Duh! I judge the behaviour of our leaders. My opinion of them goes way down if I sense they're unprincipled hucksters for regional or backroom elites. Watch out Iggy, yon McKenna has a lean and hungry look. Watch out Frank, we love to hate the traditional Liberal zeitgeist.

It's not hard to figure out who the complainers are supporting. They seem to be able to see the supposed faults in one leader but choose to ignore the many faults in another leader who can't keep his word, is totally confused about the economy and chose to plead (aka sing) on television for a little help from his friends.

What would you expect from one Liberal in his rating of another. We have even had accolades for Martin and Dion from these guys, and they sure turned out to be a bit less than great.Ignatief is touted as being such an intellectual but every strategy he has tried has failed and he has not been able to generate one new attractive policy and he has had time to do both. You have to conclude that being an academic either doesn't make you smart or that the leadership qualities that are missing in these gents is the more important ingredient.

McKenna now with the TD Bank uses the bank for political purposes. Frank likes Iggy because he got use to dealing with Americans. But most liberals call themselves independents now.

Iggy never won his local nomination or leadership they were handed to him. The party talked him to coming to Canada with the promise of a safe seat, he never came of his own volition or love of Canada he came for a pension in a short time. Iggy is me me me Your not fooling anyone McKenna

Frank MecKenna's comments about Michael Ignatieff make little if any sense as a stand alone statement. However It does echo some truth when viewed overall.Unfortunately, Mr. Ignatieff believes that as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada he is predestined to be Prime Minister of Canada for the simple reason that the Liberal Party is predestined to govern and clearly a great number of Canadian reject that notion. Further his public persona is that of arrogance, indifference and vacillation.Part of the reason Canadians are contemptuous of political leaders and their parties is the very way political parties conduct themselves. Leaders are most frequently chosen by party insiders who have their own agendas which are often as not, contrary to the best interest of Canadians as a whole. Leaders emerge as those who best meet the needs and will protect the interests of the party elite and that gives rise to a great deal of cynicism. Mr. Ignatieff is a perfect case in point in that he is there because of party insiders and he hasn't even been duly elected leader by the party as a whole. He is there because party insiders considered Stephane Dion to be a liability and thus replaced one liability with yet another.Unfortunately, much of this can be laid at the doorstep of Canadians who simply will not bother to be engaged in the selection process of party leaders and wait for others, often with special agendas, to undertake the selection process for them. We, more time than not, get exactly what we deserve because of inaction and indifference..

Ignatieff lied? Do you people even bother looking at anything other than conservative talking points? I'm no liebral but even I know thats BS.What lies. I dare you to point them out. COuld it be as bad as the income trust one? How about fixing health care (forgotten promise #5 from 2006), maybe accountability act? How about fixed election laws? This country has gone to the dogs. And when I say dogs I mean reform conservatives voting for everything they used to stand against until a whiff of power hit them.

McKenna is a smart man but either partisan or jaded on this one.People for whatever reason loved Jean Chretien, Jack Layton and yes some even love Stephen Harper. It's SOME people who don't like some politicians. In this case A LOT OF US don't like the coronation that was offered a Messiah who is all hat and no cattle.McKenna could have been that guy and cowarded up whence he looked at the Liberal Party of Toronto's (Red) financial books.

James, your post is an example of what McKenna is saying. You say Ignatieff lied. Yet you don't tell us what he has lied about. That is a " love to hate statement if i ever seen one. Remember last fall, Harper and Flaherty stood in front of the electorate and flat out said " there was no recession ". Who do you really think is the liar?

It's because we haven't had any good ones in a long while...We do love Obama though..His approval rating here is probably higher than Harper and Iggy's combined. We need our own version of him, a breath of fresh air.

I wouldn't say we "hate our Leaders" as much as I think that they never do what you want them to do,never really ask for your opinion and if they do something you want, it's always wrong and cost way too much of my money.

The real "rub" will come out in the next election campaign. I would never trust HARPER with a majority government....he has proven to be a great Divider. His cynical political opportunism is now vulnerable with his history in government.

Back in the day, I supported Mulroney. Then he and his henchmen imposed the largest tax in Canadian history, and I gladly changed my vote. After that, Creitien came along and he promised to "eliminate the GST". When he failed he lost my vote. Now we have Harper who has reduced the GST by 2%. And thus, he has my support. For now.

Maybe the Canadian public is just tired of politicians who are lying two-faced hypocrits. Maybe if we had a politician who told the truth, cared what we thought and worked for the country and not himself we wouldn't hate him or her.

McKenna, Rae, and even Coderre are all lauding Ignatieff's leadership and all covet the Liberal party leadership. It's a bad omen for Iggy to hear how wonderful he is and coming from those who intend to replace him ... but I guess that standard political fare when you know the current leader is failing badly with no hope of recovering .... so just deliver a glowing eulogy to prove your loyalty.

I wonder how Iggy enjoyed his meeting with Prince Charles. I imagine he told the Prince that he was actually the Person that should be Prime Minister . Did he mention to the Prince how well the Liberals did in the by elections and it was all due to his fantastic leadership. I guess he has been quiet the past few days as he is trying to dig up some more dirt on the Conservatives. He still hasn't learned that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones

Ignatief has not been a leader, he has not been confident in his dealings with things, which has not given the Voter much to be charmed about. His decisions have been racked with indecisiveness nothing positive, and that is the problem with Mr. Ignatief.Yes Mr. McKenna, Mr. Ignatief is not a good leader and that is why people do not like him.Mr. McKenna professes it to be hate, those are his choice of words, and so be it.

We love to hate our leaders? Sounds merely cute.....we hate because they keep stuffing cash in safety deposit boxes, do pid pro quo on home reno's, listen to lobbyists or plain suck up to communist regimes like China and then harp on how democracy is important and is why we have to go to war. It's all this hypocrisy is what I can't stand. To boot, they pretend they speak for us all - no they don't.

I think readers are posting honest opinions of their leaders that reflects the situation of how the country operates and the daily events that unfolds. i don't think readers just post bad opinions for the sake of posting. The current Gov't is useless and has so much flaws and is NOT listening to Canadians. Perhaps it starts with the leader listening to the ordinary citizen and making changes to reflect opinions rather than following what other countries do.The current Gov't is failing ALL CANADIANS on every front!

Canadians "love to hate their leaders" because there is no alternative to what we have. Give me a leader that has charisma, integrity, and some backbone then perhaps we wouldn't "love to hate our leaders".

world-leading intellectual------------------------------------That has to be the lest valuable trait to lead anything. It means you have no experience leading anything, from a lemonade stanf to a business.I can't think anyone would want an intellect anywhere nere them, they basically have no purpose in life.Just look at Obama, he has done nothing of significance in his existance, and it sure shows.

I believe that Mr. McKenna needs to clarify what he means by leaders. If he means political leaders, then he should bear in mind how Canadians compare to people in other countries. I have spent some time in the US for part of the last few years. I have learned from Americans that George Bush is an uneducated , warmongering fanatic, along with his lying trigger-happy pal, Dick Cheney. At the same time, I found out from American talk-radio that Hilary Clinton is a witch, who conspires with left-wing tyrants all over the world. As for Obama, he is a phoney, Moslem, Socialist, hell-bent on taking America all the way to total government control of society. When we keep it in perspective, I think we are pretty easy on our political leaders. Mr. Mckenna is probably feeling some of Ignatieff's pain.

Nice try Frank, but you miss the point. We don't hate Iggy because we like to hate our leaders. We hate him because he is an opportunistic phoney. And because he identified himself as an "American" while living in the USA for 30 years, then comes back proclaiming his devotion to Canada.Give me a break! We can spot a phoney when we see one.
