Millions of doses of H1N1 vaccine have already been administered, and so far, no unusual side-effects have been seen, reports The World Health Organization.

Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the agency's top flu expert, told a press briefing Thursday that 20 countries have started to administer the pandemic vaccine. He says the rates of reactions at the injection site, such as sore arms, are similar and maybe even lower than seen with seasonal flu shots.

"We now have good evidence, based on many people receiving the vaccines, that we have no picture of unusual side-effects emerging," Fukuda said.

"So the picture right now looks quite good in terms of the safety."

He said the agency was convinced the vaccine was "highly safe."

Fukuda reiterated that WHO experts have found that the vaccine appears to provide good protection after just one dose. Even in children under 10, WHO recommends that one dose appears effective, Fukuda said.

Some countries, including the U.S., are recommending that children get two doses of the swine flu vaccine. But the U.S. is using vaccine without an adjuvant, which boosts immune response. Canada, as well as many countries in Europe, is using a vaccine with adjuvant for most of the population.

While the Public Health Agency of Canada still advises children under the age of 10 to get two half-doses of vaccine, given 21 days apart, it remains unclear whether that advice will change based on the WHO recommendations.

Fukuda said the important thing is to ensure that as many children as possible get at least one dose.

"It is better to provide one dose to as many children as possible rather than two doses to fewer children," he said.

The flu chief also noted that swine flu has now become the predominant flu strain worldwide and even appears to be starting to "crowd out" H3N2 viruses in East Asia.

And he noted that H1N1 still hasn't mutated much, an observation that has surprised many flu experts who had expected to see some change with the virus by now, given how far the strain has travelled in the last seven months.

Fukuda said H1N1 samples from around the world remain very similar to those seen when the virus was first identified in April. WHO experts do expect they will start to see some change in the strain soon, though, as immunity in the human population rises and the virus adapts.

In many countries, swine flu now accounts for up to 70 per cent of the flu viruses being sampled, Fukuda said.

Reports from across North America have suggested the virus makes up more than 90 per cent of flu viruses that have been typed.

While most people recover from the illness without needing medical treatment, Fukuda warned that the public may be concluding that this virus is insignificant. But he noted that officials are continuing to see severe cases in all age groups.

"At WHO, we remain quite concerned about the patterns we are seeing, particularly, again, because a sizable number of people do develop serious complications and death," he said.

He added that cases of patients showing resistance to the antiviral drug Tamiflu remain isolated and sporadic.

"We see no evidence at all that there is widespread occurrence of antiviral resistance," Fukuda told the news conference.

Dear WHO: "Four of the seven developed serious side effects, including vomiting and diminished consciousness, but all are recovering, the ministry said. The other three complained of minor symptoms, such as developing hives.Meanwhile, other hospitals reported that 25 patients were exhibiting adverse effects from the new vaccine, including two serious cases.".....just thought you'd be interested. And "no side effects so far" doesn't mean a guarantee of anything...maybe we have to wait 10 years.

I would like to know how they are tracking adverse reactions. Our younger child developed a very high fever 12 hours after vaccination that lasted 3 days (not within the normal side effects). The doctor we saw couldn't find anything wrong with him besides the fever, and said it could have been a side effect of the vaccine, but we were not given any instruction how to report his adverse reaction.

I'm a diabetic and I got the H1N1 Vaccine yesterday...my arm was sore, got the chills just like the flu. You feel like you have the flu but without the stuffy nose and upset stomach. I went to work after receiving the H1N1 vaccine. I felt like crap at work...my advise is to book the day off. When I got home after work I went directly to bed and feel great this morning other than my arm is still sore but managable.

When they all start developing cancers a few years down the road, just remember, and take care of them ALL. Really, do you know whats in these shots? Cancer cells!!! What do you think is going to happen when they are put into a warm body? Grow!

The fact that they release a report no serious side effects yet just goes to show they were not 100% certain as t o the effects of the shot. I personally know 2 young children that after recieving the swine flu shot both got sick with high fever and are still recovering from the Shot. How did we ever live on this planet for thousands of years and get to be almost 6 billion people with out a flu shot?

That is a very good question Jon in OTTAWA. How did we survive all these thousands of years without vaccines? Anti-bodies. The human body has the ability to fight of most illnesses. However, like any other bodily process, if it's not used it becomes weak.

Because of years of vaccines and medications, our anti-bodies are just not being used. And this is why the young and healthy are being hit the hardest. They have never been seriously ill and in some cases the H1N1 is their first flu. Kids need to get ill. They need to so the body builds up the required anti-bodies.

As for this specific vaccine. This is a new, hardly tested, unproven vaccine that may cause serious side effects months or years from now. People blindly rushing to get vaccinated when they are not even at risk is not wise. You don't run into a dark room blindfolded, do you?

People need to THINK FOR THEMSELVES! Don't let the media think for you. Ever!

It is too soon to tell if the adjuvant or the mercury/formaldehyde additives will cause any health issues. Increased incidents of auto-immune disorders such as MS, arthritis and lupus may take six months or more to show up. WHO, your study is misleading, as is a lot of information appearing in the media about the vaccines and H1N1 these days.

"no serious effects so far" = we are being used like those little rat in the lab. In other words, no one is sure that this vaccine is safe nor do they know what the long term effects are, but jab everyone with a needle and let's see .......good luck !

So, then, is this a FURTHER admission, among many, many others and suspect comments of the same nature, that there is, INDEED, more risk than they are letting us know of??? Or are THEY, TOO still in the dark about this, not having tested it sufficiently to say unequivocally that it is 'safe'? Another chunk off what little is left of my faith in the system and its claims to have our 'best interests at heart'...

It's really unfortunate that more people wouldn't do some research and find out what a vaccine really is and how it works. It is a sample of dead virus that is put in your body so that your immune system can mount a response without the virus growing. Your immune system responds by producing antibodies, just like it would if it encountered a live virus. This stuff about how vaccines are ruining our immune systems is misleading and meant to cause hysteria. We don't need that right now. Cut it out.

On the one hand he is convinced the vaccine is 'fairly safe'. On the other hand '.......a sizable number of people develope serious complications....'How does this guy expect the average person out there to interprete these contradictions. I have alsways believed that safety in any clinical trial preceeds efficacy and commercialisation. It seems to mean something different when dealing with certain vaccines. I'm far from being an expert in infectious diseases. I start wondering though in my own naive way how long it takes for significant side effects of such a vaccine to be established.I'm convinced that simple and consistent messages in a situation like this are useful in addressing some of the fear and concerns in the general population.

Well all I can say is that humans have lived on this earth for thousands of years but our average life expectancy was also like 30. As science/medicine advanced we got new cures and drugs to help us survive longer. So yes we did survive on this earth for years and years but not as good as we are surviving now. All the people who complained about some side effects like rashes or soreness should give there head a shake. What if you didnt get the shot, caught the virus and died? Would you wanna go back in time and get then shot along with some soreness then?. The risks are there with the vaccine but you all need to relax and not be so paranoid that the government is out to kill you or make you sick. You cost them too much to take care of you when your sick. And they make money from you alive. So Relax.

Thanks but No Thanks to the Vaccine

Deb From Calgary : I agree with you 100%. In my case it only took two hours for me to suddenly develop neurological problems following a Tetanus vaccine, and I have been suffering with MS like symptoms for 12 years now. I was in good health when I was vaccinated and have no egg or fish or other allergies. I have permanent nerve damage. Read up on all the ingredients - adjuvants, thimerisol, mercury, formaldehyde, etc. and the immune response. I don't know which component of that vaccination caused my reaction so I can't risk any vaccine now. Neurological illnesses can include paralysis and blindness. If something goes wrong, you are on your own. I realize there is a dangerous flu circulating all over the world so it is a terrible lose-lose situation.

Right "EDB" Thalidomide was the first thought that ran through my head too. " It will stop your morning sickness so it must be a good thing! OOOPS we didn't realize it would cause this side effect!" How did all our previous generations survive without needing a flu shot??

Wow what a bunch of paranoid people you are. We are all guinea pigs everyday this shot isn't much different except that it is so highly publisized. We eat food covered in chemicals our furniture is covered in flame retardant I could go on. Some of us have children and the risk of them dying is just to great to handle. What about the long term effects of all the other vaccines who knows but i do know alot of people are saved by them.

Maybe they should clarify serious side effects so people can understand it better. Getting a rash or a fever would not be considered serious. Plus if you do not call your local health authority and report it, then no one will know!!!! You can sit there and complain about the bad reaction and go to your doctor but it is up to you to report it if something goes wrong!Joe you mentioned you have a severe fish allergy and had a reaction from the vaccine, there is squalene in the vaccine which is an organic compound found in fish. That has been pretty common knowledge since day one, that it is in the adjuvanted version.

I'm sure there are side effects but that applies to all kinds of medications. It may be true that many years down the road there may bad side effects but can you afford to wait years. I may not like that trials were not lomg but I have the choice to wait and see and take my chances. For those who wonder how we used to live without these kind of shots look at all the people that died before many of these drugs came into use.

I get the flu shot every year but I've never been put down like this one did. I spent the next whole day in bed and still slept all night. I felt awful. My arm was VERY sore for at least 3 days. The following day I was much better but it was a couple of days before I felt normal again. Hope it was worth it. I will continue getting flu shots. How do you think they wiped out things like polio and small-poxs.

Some kids had fever did they? Seems to me that after every TB, Measles, Mumps, and every other childhood booster shot, my kids all had fever, and in most cases, were given children's tylenol at the doctor's office. Let's keep in mind that these shots to ward off disease and illness were given out on a first-time basis with no history or idea of how people would react 10 yrs down the road.Am I getting the vaccine? are my kids? Undecided to be honest, but I'm leaning towards it. Just find it humourous that people on hear say "educate yourself, find out what's in it" but in the meantime, they're likely popping medications for all kinds of conditions with no second guessing whatsoever. Why is this different?

I am completely amazed at the number of people (lemmings) that are flocking in droves to 4 hour lineups to be human guinea pigs for a vaccine that has NO CLINICAL DATA to support it. Have we lost our own ability to do our own research to the point that we put all our faith in the government and doctors who will of course support this vaccine and not let everybody know the complete picture?? Squaline (which is banned in the US and Canada), formeldahyde, thermasil....this is the crap that is in the vaccines. Do research people to see what these poisons are. We're not going to know the full effects of this stuff for another 10 years. I for one am not getting this poison injected into me...nor am I allowing anybody with a syringe anywhere NEAR my children. Like everybody, we ALL need to build immunities to it, otherwise more virilant strains are going to spread and then more poisons pushed on us. Think for yourselves people.

As for tracking the side effects - it's those of you who bother to report it AND those that do it's up to the Doctor to pass the info along to the proper channels. As for people having effects - think of the SHORT time frame the vaccine got approved and having no data to report as a basis of their findings! It's a shot in the dark and even they can't be sure. The adjuvent though has had results since 2005 and was test by 250,000 people through a Corporate Laboratory with world wide results noting problems and NOT to take it "advise from the Doctor that wrote the article". As results showed negitive impact on younger people - learning disabilities.
