CTV National News: Todd Battis on the ceremony
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall arrived in St. John's, Nfld. Monday. It is the Charles' 15th visit to Canada and the first for Camilla. But their presence has also sparked debate on whether the monarchy in Canada is relevant.
Power Play: Paul Wells & Joel-Denis Bellavance
Paul Wells of Maclean's Magazine says when its time for Prince Charles to become king, it should also be a time for Canada to reevaluate the role of the monarchy. Joel-Denis Bellavance of La Presse says the debate will be very divisive because many Conservatives feel attached to the monarchy.

Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed with a round of applause by people waiting at the St. John's airport for the two to begin their first official visit to Canada as a couple.

The two greeted local politicians waiting for them on the tarmac. Both Charles and Camilla were sporting two Remembrance Day poppies on their coats.

The couple was quickly whisked away to their first event, an official welcoming ceremony in St. John's, where they were greeted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, and Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams.

CTV's Atlantic Bureau Chief Todd Battis reported that the stadium was about half-full, but the crowd gave the royal couple a loud welcome as trumpets blared.

Charles and Camilla were given a gun salute, and Charles spoke to soldiers.

The Royal couple kicked off an 11-day visit to Canada that will mark the 15th time Charles has toured Canada.

However, it is the first time he has visited since his marriage to Camilla in 2005.

The couple is sure to be greeted with warmth and enthusiasm throughout their trip, said Newfoundland Lieut.-Gov. John Crosbie.

"I would say there is considerable interest in this and there will be a big turnout and a friendly reception," he told CTV's Canada AM from St. John's on Monday morning.

Crosbie said he is looking forward to seeing Charles, whom he met in 1983, just a few days after losing a bid for the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservative party.

"You know how you feel after you've lost something like that. And he was aware of it, and was very sensitive and asked me about it and tried to console me," Crosbie said. "So I'm looking forward to seeing him again and making sure I do all I can to make sure he has a great visit to Newfoundland."

The couple will spend a couple of days travelling around Newfoundland before heading on to scheduled stops in Ontario, Quebec and B.C. before winding up the trip in Ottawa on Nov. 12.

During their trip, Charles and Camilla will visit Vancouver's new Olympic Stadium, open Toronto's Royal Winter Fair and participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa.

Ciara Hunt, editor-in-chief of Hello! Canada magazine, said Camilla will also visit Dundern Castle in Hamilton, Ont., which was built by her great-great-great grandfather, Sir Allan MacNab.

"I think it's going to be really interesting to see how Camilla does over these 11 days," Hunt told Canada AM. "I think it's very obvious that Prince Charles is at his happiest now and they are a great Royal couple. She's really embraced her role as the princess consort-to-be. So it will be fun."

It is the first time since 2001 that Charles has been on Canadian soil. During that trip, he visited Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

Royal watcher Richard Fitzwilliams said Charles has always had close ties to Canada, particularly because seven of the 22 regiments he is colonel-in-chief of are either Canadian or based in Canada.

During this current trip, Charles will present colours to three of those regiments.

The couple's visit comes at a time when polls suggest that almost half of Canadians would rather see Charles' son Prince William become the next king over his father.

In a Harris Decima poll released Monday, forty one per cent of respondents said they would prefer William as the next king.

Of the 1,000 people interviewed, about half said Canada should keep the monarchy and that it is an important part of Canadian history. The other half said the monarchy is a relic of Canada's colonial past.

People in Quebec were most likely to say the monarchy has no place in modern Canadian society over people in other provinces.

A group in Quebec has said it plans to protest the couple's visit to Montreal next week.

Fitzwilliams said Canadians will see a very happy couple in Charles and Camilla, and a Prince who is enjoying more favourable reviews among the British public, particularly due to his charitable work.

"I think that (Canadians) will see somebody who is very much the crusader when it comes to issues such as rainforests and global warming and so on," Fitzwilliams told CTV News Channel in a telephone interview from London on Monday morning. "But they'll also see, despite the fact that he is a bit fogey-ish, somebody who's got a good sense of humour and a very human touch."

Canadians have forgotten that our very existance as a nation has been based on the monarchy. We are a unique society because at Confederation and in the Canada Act 1981, we blended our history and traditions in Her Majesty The Queen and rational/debate in political/ government leadership. The Monarch and the Royal Family rather than a foreign entity are, on careful analysis, an intregal part of our national identity. It is time we mature as a society and celebrate the valued contribution of the Crown to what we are and what we are capable of becoming! May HRH Prince Charles and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall have a wonderful tour of Canada and may Canadians reaffirm our history and traditions.

It's nice to have rich tourists on the off season. Anyway it will give Harper a chance to remind the Windsors who the ruler of this Country is. He'll do this even if he has to get Governer General Michaelle Jean's permission to do so.

Well 8 years to visit subjects (Canadian residents) of the extented "England" - more like your servants that pay your way for you to freeload at our expense. You may be Royalty but at least Diana was down to earth - I have more respect for her than the rest of the clan! Time for Canadians to move on and quit this game of "when I come to visit". Eight years of my taxes towards a one time visit - sure shows you how much Charles wants to be here on Canadian Soil! Also, for a "wanna be king" who's mom even knows he should not be at the helm of the ship - not to be rude - but it's not going to happen your sons will be their before you and that will be welcome relief for the "commoner".

When I go on holidays, nobody picks up my tab !!!This royalty thing has been a festering sore spot with me for many years. Don't get me wrong here, nothing personal against the monarchy, but, I donnot feel Canadians should be forced [through taxation] to pay for some other countries monarch!! If that is the case we should pay digitaries from China, Ukraine, France, the middle east, or wherever Canadians have roots.I welcome them here, and would even invite them into my home , but I certainly don't like the Idea of forcing ME to pay for their holiday with my hard-earned taxes !!!!Time for this expensive nonsense to stop........

I am a Monarchist. I think the problem with our Royal Family is that they don’t pay attention to Canada. For instant the last election when we had so much problem with the parties getting along and the Governor General had to step in it would have been more adventitious to have ether the Queen come to Canada or even the future King (Prince Charles) come to be a mediator. May be then we can say they care for our country. I think if we had our own Prince (ie Prince or Princess of Canada) then Canadians will have some one to call there own this person could even come from the English or even the French Royal Family the Queen has the power to do this. Just a quick question when Prince Charles goes to visit the Ottawa on Remembers day will he be wearing the British Uniform or will he be wearing a Canadian equivalent, I hope he will be wearing the Canadian one he has be in two wars Falkland’s and the Gulf war and as a Royal Family member he is consider part of our military just like the Governor General but he at least served.

I think its sad that so many people are willing to be rude about the monarchy - do you forget that it is part of our heritage - and a vital part !?! - our whole system is based on the heritage we received from England and we have modified it over the years to make it Canadian- can we do more sure but lets not be obnoxious hosts!! For the detractors of Prince Charles - do you know that Prince Charles has his own self supporting business/farm so he is not a 'drain' on the taxpayers, he has many charities that he has set up the generates over $260 million dollars a year - has had huge success in getting corporations, local governments to go environmentally friendly - get kids off the street in into work, homes etc etc etc - He may have appeared to be an old fuddy duddy but if people look closely he has been quietly and hugely successful and perhaps the longevitiy of the Queen has been a positive thing ! . He is NOT a freeloader - get the facts people !Diana is gone, she was not an average person - she was product of a priviledged society but she is gone and we should not be judging, especially now.... Camilla is his wife and seems to be doing a great job in her role... so its not the fairytale we all wanted - get over it !Charles likes coming to Canada because he feels at home...Should his role in Canada by debated - perhaps - but not today or during their trip... let us welcome them and give them the respect they deserve - as you would people coming to your home for a visit !

Charlie and Trigger need to return to their full time jobs providing comic relief in Britain. It will ironic if the British dump this relic of colonialism before we do. As to the $5 million this will cost us, take it out of Harper's budget since he invited them (I'm sure with lots of pressure from the royal family who are desperately trying to rehabilitate this moron).

Richard has it right. Westerner's view is narrow and distorted. Richard says, "So much of our money wasted whenever any of them come here..."Canadians! Please wake up. Members of the Royal Family do NOT push themselves on us - THEY ARE INVITED TO COME BY CANADIANS, so of course we pay the bill! Blame the Canadians who invited them if you have a bone to pick! And in case you are not aware of it, tours like this are regarded as WORK by the royals - part of their JOB. I am reminded of an illuminating remark Prince Charles' dad, Prince Philip, made many years ago when he and Queen Elizabeth were touring Canada - something to the effect that tours were no picnic and that he'd rather be home enjoying himself... but they had a duty.... Need I say more!

The Windsors are the public face of the Rothschild/German lineage of aristocratic, democracy-destroying lender bank families from Europe. Now, would you like some loans that can establish your level of economic slavery just a little bit deeper? Why not go to war, buy into nuclear, build bridges to nowhere, it really doesn't matter as long as it's futile and keeps you coming back to borrow more in endless cyclic traps.

Many people complain about the cost of this visit, and I agree that it will cost the taxpayer some money. However, the monarchy is a very important part of our history, and I have no problem with retaining this traditoinal connectio with Great Britain. My problem is with the "Queen's Representatives" ... the Governor General and the ten Lieutenants Governor who cost us a fortune all of the time! The millions that we spend on these appointees who have rally no functional role is rediculous. If the Queen indeed wants to have these "representatives" in Canada, let her pay for them...they are her representatives! Or, if we really need to have our parliament and legislatures opened by the "head of state" or her representatives why not use satallite TV hook ups and have the Queen actually read the speech from the thrown. It would save us a bundle!

Too many people want a republic without thinking about what would be involved. In order for Canada to abolish the monarchy, we would have to have an ammendment to the constitution. That would open a Pandora's Box and every region of Canada (especially Quebec) would want further ammendments to suit their needs. Remember Meeche Lake?

Modern times prevail and having a Royal person invited - can't he visit on his own accord - he is an adult with his own company as was mentioned. So step up to the plate Charles - DO YOU HAVE TO BE INVITED TO SEE YOUR SERVANTS or is this just a show! Once in 8 years - come on people your history is one thing but the freedom you fought for is another. My history is rooted back to England but my family fought for their freedom in both the 1st , 2nd and Korean Wars.

We are an independent country, with our own Charter of Rights and Constitution (Thanks to Trudeau). To be frank, there's much more interest in the H1N1 Virus and how the federal government messed up the vaccination process so horribly despiteall the pandemic planning committees all over the place - looks to me like they were all useless! May God help us if we ever have a more threatening situation! Anyway Charlie & Camilla - if you really want to see St. John's drop down to George Street after work for a pint of ale!!

I'm all in favour of anything that makes us culturally different from the US. We already suffer a lot of cultural impact from south of the border. The fact that Canada is bilingual and a constitutional monarchy means we're distinctive from a culture that would otherwise gobble us up.

I think a bigger issue is the fact that we're only a pseudo democracy. I mean when was the last time you voted in a senator, if indeed you ever hear from yours!

Posters and readers : heed Gary In N.S's post. Even if we were to get the amendment to the constitution passed without breaking up the nation (as Gary says, Remember Meech lake), do we really want to saddle ourselves with an elected head of state? Do we want our own George Dubbya or worse? My preference is for the system as it is, with a constitutional monarch as head of state with appropriate stand-ins, limited to being able to advise the government - that advice being non-binding. Canada has done well for over a century with a monarch as head of state; the system works, why try to mend it? As for the visit by HRH Prince Charles, why not demonstrate that Canadians are indeed friendly, just as we have demonstrated to other visiting dignitaries from many nations.

I think it's kind of funny that some Canadians think that royalty is outdated for Canada. They want to be distinctive from nations like the US. The US would love to have a royal family. Just look at the way they treat their movie stars. Apparently, according to an article I read about a year ago, even France was considering naming Elizabeth as their queen. The royal family is a large part of our history and is largely responsible for who we are in the world today.

Dear Disgusted: Being a NFLD'er means that I am likely more closely tied to the monarchy than you, and I can tell you - they actually did NFLD a favour in dumping NFLD. Just think NFLD could have remained part of the UK OR they could have become their own country. The monarchy / UK has done nothing good for this country other than try to 'Lord it over us' for a very long time.... Things change, and I for one would not miss the monarchy - oh I have no feelings one way of the other if they remained, but I have a bit of a problem with my hard earned tax dollars going to such pomp and ceremony.... Especially in these tough economic times when so many are out of work and struggling.

I have no allegiance to the Queen or any other member of the royal family. The Royal Family should no longer have a ceremonial part in Canada's affairs. Just because it's been that way for 100's of years does not mean we can't change. The royal family is just outdated for Canada in this century. At some point, the royal family will no longer have a place in Britain either. As for those that can't live without the Queen, then I ask - why not??? Time does change things so why we can't go forward and get rid of the royal family involvement in Canada. Why not let all Canadians vote on it every 5 years. The royal family in Canada is a part of history but it should not be a part of today nor the future.

Funny with all of the America haters in Canada, those same people want to us to become more like the US with a republic. Having a constitutional monarchy is part of our heritage and has nothing to do with the country maturing like some republican zealots like crow about. Canada matured as a country during World War I and with the Statute of Westminster in 1931 so republican arguments are not valid. God save the Queen!

I will refer those who commented back to me to my previous statement: Then leave. I grow wreary of people who are to whiney and cannot act their age. Surely by now you all would have come to the realization events will continue to unfold even against your opposition to them. Be thankful for being alive, be thankful for the life you live and just live it. You do no one favours with all the complaining you do. A diplomatic mission, to pay a visit to a friend, should surely not be met with such distain and selfishness. We host delegates every day. Should you be upset about your tax dollars perhaps you would ask our politicians to take some paycuts or spend less on their fancy lunches. Connecting with other human beings is something we as a race have done throughout history. All you can do is grumble, frown, and then shrug. Before you know it, it will all be over and you will notice that nothing in your personal lives have changed. Worry about yourselves, live your lives, for there is nothing to gain from your hollow protests. It saddens me that patriotism is lost upon you and that you are not proud of our nation and proud to be part of it. I am proud that the Royal Family wishes to visit us.

I work in the downtown part of St. John's, where Charles & Camilla will be greeted at Mile One Arena later today. Things are rapidly getting busy here with beefed up police prescence and the media circus beginning. Rumour has it that there aren't large numbers of people attending the ceremony, so there are buses shuttling public service employees to the site, and emails flying around encouraging everyone to attend. If people need their arms twisted like that just to make an appearance, they should stay home. It only turns it into a bit of a sham, knowing that half the folks there could care less!

Royalty is derived simply by one person deciding that someone else is more important than another. So, either we are all Royal or none of us are. In the case of Charles and his wife, they are just overpaid celebrities. It took years to neuter the Royal Family, in terms of being a part of the government. We and they should now finish the job and take away their crowns. They are no more royal than anyone else I know.

To Shawn:Wow!! It seems you still haven't understood the meaning of independence and freedom, huh? let me guess, you will bow down to the queen and king no matter what, right? I hope not many Canadians have your point of view, otherwise, we will be in bigger trouble than I thought. It is amazing that in the 21st century, some people still like to degrade themselves and bow down to someone else with no regard for their own independence and freedom. To those of you who agree with Shawn, go back to England (heck, even there it's not like that anymore). And yes, many of those who move to US are people who like REAL independence and don't like to pledge allegiance to anyone but their country, especially to some unelected person!I'm optimistic that one day we will abolish the undemocratic head-of-state of monarchy and have a REAL/Full democratic country that we deserve. The recent polls shows that is coming true slowly but surely.

Looks to me that the conservatives would keep the monarchy & Liberals would get rid of the monarchy. The monarchy is part of our history, just like conservative policies.

what a waste of taxpayers money to have these two British come to Canada, send them back and charge them for coming to this beautiful country. the monarchy is useless and antiquated .let us become our own Canadian republic

I was taken aback by the CTV coverage of the event. In every interview the anchor was trying to get those interviewed to admit to Canadian apathy over the visit and the Royal Family. It is not what I expected, it detracted from Newfoundland & Labrador's efforts to be at centre stage, if only for a short while, and was unnecessary. Our national networks really have to work on reducing the bias of their personnel; it keeps creeping into the news and reflects poorly on their organization.

After all is said and done, remember that there are only five real Kings/Queens in the world: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs AND the throne in England. Welcome to Canada, Charles and Camilla and may you enjoy your visit.

Gross over-reaction. While I have no love for the 'Royal Family', this visit is no different from any other state visit by a foreign statesman - it wasn' t that long ago that the Emperor of Japan and his wife visited.Look at the positive side - if it wasn't for the British, we'd likely all be speaking French!

I always like when the Royals visit. We are part of the British Empire. England and Canada are connected, all you have to do is read a history book. My parents were Irish and Scottish. I realize our country is made up of many people from all over the world. That is a fact as a Canadian I am very proud of. But I like the ancestory factor with our connection to England, The Queen and the Royal Family. If you want to talk about wasting money, well, E Health, Flu Clinics, CEO salaries, consultant fees. Giving gracious and proper welcome to a head of state is not a waste of money. Did anyone mention how much money to welcome the President of the USA to Canada, or anybody else who heads the government of another country. I miss the days when we use to sing God Bless the Queen in school each day.Part of the British Empire and Proud

The argument that we should keep the monarchy because it's "part of our heritage" is a logical fallacy known as "argument from tradition". Burning witches also used to be part of the heritage of Britain- should they continue to do so? The fact that something was done in the past is no argument whatsoever for continuing that practice- every social action should be able to stand on its own feet, as it were, not depend on the excuse that "we've always done it that way." Based on that logic, we shouldn't eat cooked meat. That said, I was impressed by the way the Governor General worked during our recent crisis to hold Mr. Harper in check. There are problems with having an elected head of state, as our friends down south found out with George W. Elected leaders can become tyrants if they are not held accountable. On balance, however, the idea that someone is "born to rule over me" is simply offensive and outdated. Free adults ought to rule themselves. Unfortunately, our conservative friends are perhaps not yet ready to act like full adults. Until they are, we may be saddled by Charles and Camilla.

Jim Mc B states "Our national networks really have to work on reducing the bias of their personnel; it keeps creeping into the news and reflects poorly on their organization." How true, and not just in this instance. Daily, we see and hear the opinions of reporters being passed off as news. In this case, a deliberate attempt was made by the reporter to change the focus of what should have been a simple reporting of an event into an opinion survey that bore little relation to the event itself; the visit of The Prince of Wales and his wife to Newfoundland. It is not the job of the news media to *create* the news - only to report it. Opinion pieces have their place in talk shows where talking heads can get their face time, but leaving the FACTS of an event intact.
