Pieces of steel from the ruins of World Trade Center were taken and made into a navy warship. The USS New York sailed into the city's harbour Monday on its maiden voyage, and it was a bitter-sweet sight for many New Yorkers.

A U.S. Navy ship that was built with steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers pulled into port at its namesake city Monday morning with a 21-gun salute near the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Emergency services workers, victims' families and members of the public crowded into a waterfront public viewing area to greet the USS New York and its crew, all of whom stood at attention.

After a pause, the sound of gunfire filled the air.

After its stop near what is known as Ground Zero, the ship travelled up the Hudson River toward the George Washington Bridge, escorted by about two dozen tugboats and other vessels.

It will head back south again to dock at Pier 88, where an official commissioning ceremony will take place on Saturday.

The bow of the US$1billion, 208-metre vessel contains 7.5 tons of steel from the fallen buildings.

"It's a transformation ... from something really twisted and ugly," Rosaleen Tallon, who lost her firefighter brother, Sean, on 9/11, told The Associated Press. "I'm proud that our military is using that steel."

According to Navy spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Colette Murphy, 13 per cent of the 361 sailors on the ship are from New York State, a higher figure than usual. A number of Navy personnel submitted requests to serve on the vessel, Murphy said.

In addition to Navy personnel, about 250 Marines also make up the New York's crew.

The vessel will stay in the Big Apple until Veteran's Day before it makes its way to Norfolk, Va, where it will engage in training and other exercises for about a year.

The ship's flight deck can carry helicopters, as well as the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

The ship is what's known as a San Antonio-class amphibious dock vessel. There are four others in service, and four more being built, two of which are named to commemorate 9/11. The USS Arlington honours the attack on the Pentagon, while the USS Somerset pays tribute to the county in Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed.

Plans for the ship were already underway before 9/11. However, a year after the attacks, the Navy announced that the ship would be named the New York to honour both the city and the state, as well as the nearly 3,000 victims of the worst terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

I think the US should build more more ships and have one named after every state and major city to honour everyone for something. My God man, could that $1B have gone to help the poverty anywhere in that country? Or MI 27% unemployment? Man. Bush is gone and still having an impact.

I'm quite tired of hearing about the inside job that was 911, my fellow Americans and the media are constantly milking this for all it's worth. Really, enough already, I don't care, and why is this a big headline anyway.

The Conservative Government talked about buying an amphibious ship. Anything like this?

The Canadian version of this would have been a bridge to symbollically link two cultures. Instead we have a weapon of mass destruction built by the USA.

I thought all the steel was sent to Japan to keep people from taking samples and seeing where the cutter charges had gone off and caused the buildings to collapse? You mean they sent the steel all the way to Japan and had it recycled and then sent the steel to some American company and had the ship made? Sounds ridiculous to me.

Yeah, Marina It's no big deal if it was an inside job. All we need is for all Americans to decide it's no big deal. Nothing is a big deal. Bomb all the cities and kill all the women and children and rape the rest, it's no big deal. Just bomb Iraq and create millions of babies screwed up with depleted uranium, it's not big deal.

Hmm another "war"ship, too bad they did not build a hospital boat or something that would help people instead of made for killing. Wouldn't make me happy if someone I knew and loved died in that mess to have their name and memory attached to a boat made to kill others.

I look at this ship and think what a shame it is that the evidence of whatever happened on September 11, 2001 was rushed off so quickly and destroyed. If all that scrap metal could talk...!

This ship shows that the terrorists achieved their goals. I am surprised they never called the ship patriot or justice. This is a symbol of not american resolve but how fear destroyed a once fine country under the leadership of GWB. The steal should have been used for something a little more giving, not life taking. Unfortunately this type of yokel-ness is invading canada.

They should have painted it yellow and hung some fuzzy dice from the bow, just like a NYC taxi.

I think it's cool. Where do we get our ships from? The Dutch or the Brits after they've almost sunk. Good for the Yanks.

Perhaps it is a shame that the steel was not used in a humanitarian ship; yet in this present world, too bad we didn't have this vessel and her sisters to fight Hitler and his cohorts. We cannot fight evil with just swords, but when attacked we must stand our ground.

You need war ships to protect your ability to have "peace bridges". Have you learned NOTHING from history?

What is the matter with people today? Everyone wants to bash on USA. Look what has happened in the world, if it was not for the USA the world could very easily be very different today. Everyone wants to bash them then cry for there help when they are needed. Makes me sick to my stomach.

The chance of the destruction of our planet is very very small with this collider, but who are these people to decide what risks are acceptable for all of mankind? It puts me at unease and adds to my anxiety. CERN acknowledges that there are miniscule risks -- they admit to it so please spare the convoluted retorts.
