I know of someone who is in the hospital right now in an induced coma on a ventilator with H1N1, and he's also on dialysis cause his kidneys are no longer working. He didn't want to go to the doctor when he thought it was just the flu, and ended up having no choice when he couldn't breathe. This is a reality and it's not just your typical flu... stop thinking you're invincible or that the vaccine is unsafe... it's a better option than being on a ventilator for weeks and possibly spreading it to others.

Swine flu vaccination programs now underway

Flu shot clinics across the country began administering the swine flu vaccine Monday, and high-risk groups, including the chronically ill and pregnant women, were encouraged to be the first in line.
While some clinics are prepared to vaccinate anyone who asks, others are limiting shots to health care workers and other at-risk populations, and will begin vaccinating the general public within the next two to three weeks.
High-priority groups include people under the age of 65 who are suffering from chronic disease; pregnant women; children under five; health care workers; and people in remote communities.
- In Nova Scotia, shots for Capital Health employees will be offered starting Thursday. In Halifax, the general population must wait another week.
- In New Brunswick, health care workers are being vaccinated first, along with at-risk groups.
- Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia are offering the flu vaccine first to high-priority groups. Officials are asking others to wait.
- Saskatchewan's program will be limited to health care workers, with other high-risk groups able to get the shot the first week of November.
- Officials in Alberta say that while they, too, are targeting at-risk people, no one will be turned away from flu shot clinics.
Officials in Quebec began administering the vaccine on Saturday. Vaccination programs will continue through December.
CTV medical expert Dr. Marla Shapiro says the vaccine is the best way to protect against the H1N1 flu virus.
"We have to remind people that vaccine strategy is the best prevention against this primary illness and the good news is that the type of vaccine that has been prepared...is a good match for the circulating flu bug that's out there," Shapiro told Canada AM on Monday.
"If we track what's being reported in our clinics that are watching and actually doing swabs, 99.9 per cent or so in some communities of what we're seeing is all H1N1, as opposed to the different type of seasonal strains."
Millions of doses were shipped to the provinces and territories last week in advance of Health Canada's decision on Wednesday to approve the vaccine.
The government has ordered more than 50 million doses of the vaccine from its maker, GlaxoSmithKline, which means every Canadian who wants a shot can have one.
But that vaccine contains an adjuvant, an organic compound designed to make the shot more effective, and pregnant women are being urged to get vaccinated with a non-adjuvanted dose.
On Monday afternoon, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced that Canada has purchased 200,000 doses of an adjuvant-free vaccine from Australia-based CSL Ltd., which will be made available to pregnant women next week.
GlaxoSmithKline's adjuvant-free vaccine will be available in early November.
"The government of Canada is committed to protecting the health of all Canadians," Aglukkaq told a news conference. "The steps we are taking today will help ensure everyone has access to the H1N1 flu vaccine at the right time."
Despite the mass immunization program, a Strategic Counsel poll taken for CTV News and The Globe and Mail released Sunday found that 51 per cent of Canadians do not plan to get vaccinated.
That is despite the fact that 67 per cent of those polled said they believe the vaccine is safe for adults and 59 per cent said the vaccine is safe for children.
The poll, which questioned 1,000 Canadians between Oct. 22 and 24, suggests most of the country is not overly worried about the H1N1 flu, even if people are taking precautions.
Of the 63 per cent who said they are taking precautions:
- 97 per cent are washing their hands more
- 32 per cent are avoiding crowded places
- 35 per cent are avoiding shaking hands
- 19 per cent are visiting retail stores less often
- 11 per cent are avoiding airplane flights
The federal government will attempt to win over the vaccine sceptics in a new advertising campaign to roll out over the next several weeks.
While current ads tell Canadians how to prevent contracting or passing on the virus, by sneezing into their sleeves and washing their hands, the new ads will focus on the vaccine.
"There will be more (ads) coming over the month, for sure," Tim Vail, a spokesperson for Aglukkaq, told The Canadian Press.
"It's not going to be a tsunami. We have ads out there now about being prepared (and) those ads will continue to go out. And as those buys are done, we'll be talking about becoming vaccinated."
Canadians have had wide-ranging opinions on the vaccines.
Forklift operator James Mac is so against the vaccine, he was out warning public to avoid getting the shot on Monday.
"Do we want to put this in our body?" he asked.
Health officials are worried that such sentiment may hurt Canadians in the long-run.
"I guess what frustrates me is the amount of mythology out there. The anti-vaccine movement -- really, its efforts are to create doubt," Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones said.
In Ontario, health officials are launching a new radio commercial aimed at convincing the public to take the H1N1 virus seriously.

As with our most common influenza virus - the main reason to get a flu shot is money.
You body DOES have the ability to fight of these viruses by proper health, food and care. Building your own immune system is the answer, not falling victim to this bogus cash grab.
Scared to spread it if you get it? Simply follow very basic hygiene and wash your hands, cover your mouth etc...be respectful of your co-workers and stay home.
This is total BS.
I will NOT be lining up like cattle to inject my body with a mercury based, untested product - neither should you!

i don't think so! you are confusing the vaccine program with good flu courtesy.
i just came back from mexico and there were no sick people at our resort or on the plane. this has been hyped up to feed the greed machine of big pharma!
let your body do it's thing, we all have immune systems for a reason and if we keep relying on the drug companies then it will be no one's fault but your own when your system fails and you need to go live in a bubble while the rest are out in the sunshine! by the way, i'll stop paying my taxes when that day happens, no way am i paying for your hypochondria or result there of!

And finally,if you make the personal choice not to have the vaccine, accept, with grace, the responsibility that comes with your right to decline the vaccination.IF YOUR ARE UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET SICK,STAY HOME.NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO INFECT SOMEONE ELSE THROUGH CARELESSNESS OR IGNORANCE.And,if you have a friend or neighbour who gets sick, step up and offer to make a trip to the store,or run an errand or two if they need something done. That will help them avoid passing it on. This is not likely the end of the world. But it is time for two rare commodities,COMMON SENSE and RESPECT for other people. ME?? I've had the shots every year since I started my job at BC Transit 10 years ago.Not only have I survived the shots,I almost never get the flu any more.Whereas before,I got it once or twice EVERY YEAR. Neither choice is totally wrong.Passing this virus on to others is wrong. That poor little girl got the flu from someone, and she did not deserve to die.

Most of us have a healthy immune system and altho none of us enjoy being ill it`s how our bodies build it`s own immune system.
I had flu as a child and I can honestly say I felt like death warmed up! I have never had flu since! Touch wood!

Please do NOT get the vaccination! For your and your child's long term health. The vaccination theory is just that, a THEORY. It is of NO benefit to you, on the contrary it is very damaging! Rather build your immune system naturally by eating and living a healthy holistic lifestyle. Please.

No one should be forced into it, but in our case where i work they pretty much are, and its not to bad of an idea considering people have died from this, underlying health conditions or not, people have died, thats what im thinking about. The people who have no consideration to wash their hands and make sure they are not spreading the germs around are the people who are going to get sick, and guess what no sympathy for me. Everyone needs to start acting like adults here, wash your hands cough into your arm as well as sneeze into your arms... stop the spread of germs and stop acting like infants. your supposed to be responsible.. im getting the h1n1 flu shot.

It's your health and your body, NOT the government's. Don't listen to the pharma-sponsored talking heads. Do your own research, educate others, and just say NO.

By the way, do you know how much mercury is in vaccinations? The average child, by the time they are teens, already have too much mercury in their systems.

Do the right thing and stand up against the propaganda and fear mongering machine.
Remember these letters FUD -- fear, uncertainty and dismay. This is what military's use against each other, not governments against their peoples.

I don't care what Obama is saying I care about what my Prime Minister is saying.
Also in every media report or picture I am seeing none of the people who are giving the shots are not wearing gloves. What if someone with Aids (knowing they have it or not knowing they have it) gets that blood into my system some how.
Why are they not wearing gloves and how sterile is the place they are giving it from

I must take this "still in questions" & "incomplete test done on human" h1N1 flu shot; otherwise, I can be sent home without pay if the pandemic does occur and I can't be utilized at the hospital to treat patients during the outbreak.
Being a healthcare professional and a health consumer myself, I fear that side-effect of this quickly created vaccine and no long term study/test to prove 100% safety is premature for public safety.
So, I would say "Thanks, but No Thanks"!!!!!
But I must take the damn shot because of the stupid hospital policy! If negative side effects turn up later on, I am so sueing all these so claimed "expert" medical officers and the government asses!
-hope for the best-

You'd think with all the controversy surrounding thimerisol, that the drug companies would find some other preservative to use, that's much safer. And by the way, formeldehyde? They inject that into dead bodies! We get enough exposure to chemicals in our daily lives, why would we need more injected into our bodies that are supposed to protect us? Note that most allergies are actually from the preservatives that are being put into food, not the actual food itself. Interesting....
So, for those people who say "do your research", I've done plenty of it for my daughter and my son, and I don't like what I'm finding out...
