I know of someone who is in the hospital right now in an induced coma on a ventilator with H1N1, and he's also on dialysis cause his kidneys are no longer working. He didn't want to go to the doctor when he thought it was just the flu, and ended up having no choice when he couldn't breathe. This is a reality and it's not just your typical flu... stop thinking you're invincible or that the vaccine is unsafe... it's a better option than being on a ventilator for weeks and possibly spreading it to others.

Swine flu vaccination programs now underway

Flu shot clinics across the country began administering the swine flu vaccine Monday, and high-risk groups, including the chronically ill and pregnant women, were encouraged to be the first in line.

While some clinics are prepared to vaccinate anyone who asks, others are limiting shots to health care workers and other at-risk populations, and will begin vaccinating the general public within the next two to three weeks.

High-priority groups include people under the age of 65 who are suffering from chronic disease; pregnant women; children under five; health care workers; and people in remote communities.

  • In Nova Scotia, shots for Capital Health employees will be offered starting Thursday. In Halifax, the general population must wait another week.
  • In New Brunswick, health care workers are being vaccinated first, along with at-risk groups.
  • Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia are offering the flu vaccine first to high-priority groups. Officials are asking others to wait.
  • Saskatchewan's program will be limited to health care workers, with other high-risk groups able to get the shot the first week of November.
  • Officials in Alberta say that while they, too, are targeting at-risk people, no one will be turned away from flu shot clinics.

Officials in Quebec began administering the vaccine on Saturday. Vaccination programs will continue through December.

CTV medical expert Dr. Marla Shapiro says the vaccine is the best way to protect against the H1N1 flu virus.

"We have to remind people that vaccine strategy is the best prevention against this primary illness and the good news is that the type of vaccine that has been prepared...is a good match for the circulating flu bug that's out there," Shapiro told Canada AM on Monday.

"If we track what's being reported in our clinics that are watching and actually doing swabs, 99.9 per cent or so in some communities of what we're seeing is all H1N1, as opposed to the different type of seasonal strains."

Millions of doses were shipped to the provinces and territories last week in advance of Health Canada's decision on Wednesday to approve the vaccine.

The government has ordered more than 50 million doses of the vaccine from its maker, GlaxoSmithKline, which means every Canadian who wants a shot can have one.

But that vaccine contains an adjuvant, an organic compound designed to make the shot more effective, and pregnant women are being urged to get vaccinated with a non-adjuvanted dose.

On Monday afternoon, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced that Canada has purchased 200,000 doses of an adjuvant-free vaccine from Australia-based CSL Ltd., which will be made available to pregnant women next week.

GlaxoSmithKline's adjuvant-free vaccine will be available in early November.

"The government of Canada is committed to protecting the health of all Canadians," Aglukkaq told a news conference. "The steps we are taking today will help ensure everyone has access to the H1N1 flu vaccine at the right time."

Despite the mass immunization program, a Strategic Counsel poll taken for CTV News and The Globe and Mail released Sunday found that 51 per cent of Canadians do not plan to get vaccinated.

That is despite the fact that 67 per cent of those polled said they believe the vaccine is safe for adults and 59 per cent said the vaccine is safe for children.

The poll, which questioned 1,000 Canadians between Oct. 22 and 24, suggests most of the country is not overly worried about the H1N1 flu, even if people are taking precautions.

Of the 63 per cent who said they are taking precautions:

  • 97 per cent are washing their hands more
  • 32 per cent are avoiding crowded places
  • 35 per cent are avoiding shaking hands
  • 19 per cent are visiting retail stores less often
  • 11 per cent are avoiding airplane flights

The federal government will attempt to win over the vaccine sceptics in a new advertising campaign to roll out over the next several weeks.

While current ads tell Canadians how to prevent contracting or passing on the virus, by sneezing into their sleeves and washing their hands, the new ads will focus on the vaccine.

"There will be more (ads) coming over the month, for sure," Tim Vail, a spokesperson for Aglukkaq, told The Canadian Press.

"It's not going to be a tsunami. We have ads out there now about being prepared (and) those ads will continue to go out. And as those buys are done, we'll be talking about becoming vaccinated."

Canadians have had wide-ranging opinions on the vaccines.

Forklift operator James Mac is so against the vaccine, he was out warning public to avoid getting the shot on Monday.

"Do we want to put this in our body?" he asked.

Health officials are worried that such sentiment may hurt Canadians in the long-run.

"I guess what frustrates me is the amount of mythology out there. The anti-vaccine movement -- really, its efforts are to create doubt," Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones said.

In Ontario, health officials are launching a new radio commercial aimed at convincing the public to take the H1N1 virus seriously.

The commercials just turned me off even thinking of getting the shot. Between the commercials and all the supposed "experts" the information changes almost daily. So you don't know what to believe.I agree THANKS BUT NO THANKS! It's the flu folks - one strain. We've had all sorts of strains before. The hype is just for the medical producers AND the "professionals" justifying themselves. Have to prove they are doing their job - even if it is creating a pandemic!!!

Can someone please explain to me why they ordered 50.4 million doses, when there are only 34 million people in Canada, and only half of those people will be getting the vaccination? What do they plan to do with all those extra doses?I, myself will not be getting it. Period.

What many people are worried about and no one can answer is: What effects or long term effects would an unborn baby have if a pregnant woman were to take the vaccine. I am worried that we are part of an experiment from the big drug companies. We live in Ontario and I would love to find more information but I have not found what I am looking for about the vaccine.

Really, folks, we have to ask ourselves "Who benefits the most from a mass vaccination?" Drug companies. Billions will be made if they can convince the majority of North Americans to buy into this panic frenzy. Frankly, an ad campaign is nothing more than an American-style propaganda blitz designed to make Canadians choose a barely-developed and risky vaccine over their own safety. I am one Canadian who won't be bullied into putting a needle in my arm!

There has been so much confusing information around the H1N1 flu. No wonder people are reluctant to get the shot. I will get the shot to prevent spreading this illness. The thought of a small child dying because adults are refusing this flu shot is just wrong.

Taxpayers may have paid for vaccines, but is it money well spent considering far more canadians die yearly from seasonal flu.The vaccine tests in Canada won't be finished until next year. Canada is rolling out a vaccine approved in Europe, though if you check the press there, many lament the quick approval, without complete testing given to the vaccines. The german government is getting different vaccines then the population. How about the mercury allowances? Were they lifted as some were in the US?Makes you wonder.

Ok,, canada is spending mega tax dollars on this..WHY?? Who is going to benefit financially??Our population is measured in mere millions and spending all this public cash,, I have to ask exactly how much is China, India, and Africa spending on this?? The combined populations are literally in the BILLIONS !!Are these people worth less that our people? Is the world going to sit by and watch this pandemic wipe out all these innocents? Is this just another social experiment? If world-wide carnage DOES develop out of this,, is western civilization ready to take on 'medicare' for the world masses? I'm thinking,, I don't really want the answeres to all the questions..........

Passing it on to a child is wrong, but endangering yourself with this untested, unstable shot is a big risk. Have you researched where this flu shot is spawned from? I think that people could see things get much worse with this shot (tamiflu) and make things much worse.

D.K. Lindsay

The main reason that Dr. Butler-Jones is having trouble convincing the public to get the shot is due to the fact that a non-proven product is being forced on us by the government who traditionally have no idea what they are doing and that the Pandemic in most peoples mind is totally fabricated , It seems stange that if this disease is so wide spread and that hardly no one knows anybody who has had the H1N1 virus? But "they" say how dire the situation is so we must get the shot since we have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on it..

I have one question only for the Government. Is this GUARANTEED protection for anyone receiving the shot or passing it along? Due to MY past reactions from the FLU SHOTS (within 36 hours of receiving the needle) this puts ME at risk for this Vaccine. I do not want anyone to get sick BUT the risk is to great for me - also the push to get it onto the market UNTESTED is another factor. Still pondering who is at risk!!!!

I think the worry for me as a pregnant woman is that they only have the adjuvanted flu vaccine so its not like the regular flu vaccine and there is no real data on the use of adjuvanted flu vaccine in pregnant women or young children. So now I may have to wait a month? Very concerning.

Conflicting info?- The mean age of infection is 18. Then it was 40. Then it was back to 18.- Can't get regular flu shot and the H1N1. Then you can. The fact is, flu shots' effects are limited to about 3 months. No way last yrs flu shot is going to effect ANYTHING in your immune system this yr.- There is no 'seasonal' flu this year so no need for any vaccine other than swine. No there is a seasonal vaccine. The truth is they DON'T know the long term effect of the adjuvant as it has only been used in seniors who have maybe 10 yrs left. If a 20 yr old gets adjuvant, what is the effect in 20-40 or more years? Worse yet, the effect in children. Seniors' metabolism is not the same as a 16 yr old.

I will not be getting the vaccine. In my opinion, you do not need to be a doctor to know it is not right to inject mercury, formaldehyde and who knows what other chemicals into your body. I used to get the regular flu shot every year, and I also used to get the flu every year. I stopped getting that vaccine 5 years ago, and have been flu free ever since.

According to the latest government stats I've seen, 83 people have died in the entire country, and the majority of those had "contributing" health problems. When you look at how many people die every year from the "Regular Flu", heart disease, cancer and other major killers, this H1N1 thing is getting blown way out of proportion......I can't help but think that a very small number of people are going to make an awful lot of money, mostly based on fear mongering......No, I'm not getting the flu shot!

This is ridiculous. Of course this vaccine has been tested. It was tested the same way flu shots are tested every year. Number of people who died in the US last year from the seasonal flu: 36,000. Number that died from getting the flu shot: ZERO.

We simply take care of ourselves and are able to question the ulterior motives behind this scare-mongering juggernaut. You don't need outside poisons injected into your system to fight these illnesses off. Eat well and recognize which foods affect your level of immunity.

In the Fredericton area of NB pregnant women clinics are well after the other clinics, my elementary aged child and my least at risk (for the under 65 group) husband will have their vaccines long before I will.On one hand they discourage people gathering in large group but our only option to have our elementary aged children vaccinated is to attend one of 4 clinics which is supposed to accomodate all elementary school children in the city, children 6 mos-5 years and people 65 & under with pre existing conditions for the entire city. Even with additional clinics for the remainder of the general public next week it doesn't exactly discourage going out in a highly populated area. Ridiculous. Meanwhile other areas of NB have managed to set up clinics during school hours for elementary aged children reducing public contact....

I'm so confused about what to do. I want my daughter to be safe but what will I be doing to her by injecting an untested, unproved vaccine into her not to mention the fact that they have added an adjuvant to it this time. I fear that at 50 million doses we've just become the worlds biggest laboratory and all of us are the guinea pigs! Guess my family and I will take are chances. Based on the comments, about 50% of the readers here have fallen victim to the media propaganda around this flu virus and vaccination.

As with our most common influenza virus - the main reason to get a flu shot is money.

You body DOES have the ability to fight of these viruses by proper health, food and care. Building your own immune system is the answer, not falling victim to this bogus cash grab.

Scared to spread it if you get it? Simply follow very basic hygiene and wash your hands, cover your mouth etc...be respectful of your co-workers and stay home.

This is total BS.

I will NOT be lining up like cattle to inject my body with a mercury based, untested product - neither should you!

I wash my hands thoroughly and often, take good care of my health and take as many precautions as I can to keep myself from getting sick. IMO this vaccine has been tested about as much as any seasonal flu vaccine ever has seeing as there's a new one every year, and it wouldn't be offered to the general public if it weren't deemed by scientific assessment to be safe. Another means to keep myself healthy is being offered to me on a platter, OF COURSE I'm going to take it.

For those who keep asking why 50 million doses were ordered when there's only 34 million Canadians, it's because for a while experts thought we would need 2 doses of the vaccine, whereas recent research has shown that one dose of vaccine with adjuvant is enough for adults. Children between 6 months and 12 years still need two doses. And the government didn't know so many people would be reluctant to get it. If everyone would, then the 50 million doses would be just right. Voila! Im an elementary school teacher, in contact with little kids including one immuno-suppressed child, and yes, I am definitely getting this vaccine. It's too bad so many of you are so paranoid. Life must be a sad place when everyone's out to get you!

Reading these post makes me glad we live in a country that allows us to choose. Though I must say the level of whining, the accusations of some giant conspiracy, the snivelling about who who will get the shot and who will not,and the fear that someone who makes the vaccine will actually make a profit, are insane. It's your body and your life.As it should be,getting the shot or not getting the shot is your choice.I would just urge people to make their choice FOR THE RIGHT REASONS,AND NOT BECAUSE OF SOME HYSTERIA FOR EITHER SIDE OF THE DEBATE.

And finally,if you make the personal choice not to have the vaccine, accept, with grace, the responsibility that comes with your right to decline the vaccination.IF YOUR ARE UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO GET SICK,STAY HOME.NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO INFECT SOMEONE ELSE THROUGH CARELESSNESS OR IGNORANCE.And,if you have a friend or neighbour who gets sick, step up and offer to make a trip to the store,or run an errand or two if they need something done. That will help them avoid passing it on. This is not likely the end of the world. But it is time for two rare commodities,COMMON SENSE and RESPECT for other people. ME?? I've had the shots every year since I started my job at BC Transit 10 years ago.Not only have I survived the shots,I almost never get the flu any more.Whereas before,I got it once or twice EVERY YEAR. Neither choice is totally wrong.Passing this virus on to others is wrong. That poor little girl got the flu from someone, and she did not deserve to die.

Arrived at the brentwood flu clinic at 815 AM today( Monday ) to be one of first in line only to find a 3 hour wait. The line was twice around the mall and out the back door into the parking lot. How does the health authorities expect elderly, young children & pregrant mothers to stand in line for such a long period of time? One million people and four clinics is crazy. I am shocked at the number of people commenting here who are refusing to get vaccinated. All I read are conspiracy theories about drug companies and "big brother". Guess what folks - the vaccines have already been purchased! Not getting a shot won't save taxpayers one penny. All that will happen is that: a) the government will spend more tax dollars on ad campaigns, because people aren't getting vaccinated in sufficient numbers. b) there will be an increased load on the medical system, when more people get sick with the flu than need toc) you will put your friends, family, and co-workers at greater risk of contracting the fluAll of this because you're afraid of a tiny poke in the arm? Or because you have some misguided anti-corporate / anti-government conspiracy theories?I really cannot understand this attitude. I suppose the one small blessing is that people like you will result in shorter lineups for people like me and my family.

With all the Media coverage, I have no idea what is true information. Everyday the media announces something new and it sounds to me like no one really knows whats going on...this is sad. If this shot is so important then why are we not getting proper coverage with CORRECT PROVEN information. Get the FACTS and INFORMATION correct and then let people make an educated decision. As for the information out there now I will not be getting the shot!
Educate the public with REAL information media outlets, not just information to get us to watch your news station!

"Number of people who died in the US last year from the seasonal flu: 36,000. Number that died from getting the flu shot: ZERO."CHRIS: Where are you getting your data from? Zero died from a "vaccine"? How about the last round of swine flu? The vaccine killed more than the flu? The vaccine placed 6,000 people into mental wards for life. They suffer from mental psychosis and will NEVER recover. How about in Japan today - they are reporting severe reactions to the vaccine with many in semi-consicous states. What about the stats that state fatalities? Maybe you choose to believe what you want? In 2005 they predicted 150 million people will be dead because of the Avian flu! What was up with that? Now they are giving us a code red type alerts - I think the Bush administration blunted that tactic as nobody pays attention anymore with boys who call wolf too often.

I encourage people to read about adjuvants before making a decision about this. Whenever Big Pharma panics the public into getting a rushed vaccine, bad things happen. I will never get this vaccination, but I will up my dosage of Vitamin D, wash my hands like usual, and stop worrying about this flu that won't kill me.

I believe people with underlying health issues, elderly, young children and pregnant women should have the vacine, as these people will be more at risk of complications if they were to catch swine flu.

Most of us have a healthy immune system and altho none of us enjoy being ill it`s how our bodies build it`s own immune system.

I had flu as a child and I can honestly say I felt like death warmed up! I have never had flu since! Touch wood!

For those saying not to listen to naysayers on the internet and listen to the medical professionals, well there have been plenty of medical professionals/doctors saying no it hasn't been tested enough etc and not only on the internet but on mainstream television. So which medical professional is right? All of them are doctors. I don't think all of the ones saying 'caution' are quacks sorry.

Well, sometimes there's more information out there on the Internet than the medical experts themselves even know or are willing to tell us. In Ireland many family doctors are refusing to administer this shot, so the nurses are doing the dirty work. The Obama daughters are not getting it, what does that tell you, maybe that he values their lives too much. And... a few weeks ago the medical profession was in a muddle because they themselves were confused over this issue. Yeah right, I'm gonna trust the "professionals", yeah sure. It's your life, do your own research and don't trust the media blitz.

Tell me, if there was a vaccine during the middle ages when the black plague ravaged europe and surrounding areas, would the population have taken a 'shot' if would have saved their lives? The H1N1 bug affects some people, no one can say who will be affected, but if it is you, then maybe the shot will help you...idiots.

That is from the CDC website.I will not be taking this shot, I plan on making sure my Vitamin D levels are at their optimal levels as I do every year and do not even get a hint of sickness. The southern hemisphere just finished their winter and you didn't hear about any issues sown there. Also Finland has already downgraded this issue saying it isn't as bad as what the big pharma is trying to say.Do your research, I believe more harm than good will come from this shot.

I think the biggest problem with mass vaccination programs is believing that we are all the same. Genetically, we are subject to different illnesses. Could boosting or tampering with an immune system be responsible for the dramatic increase in allergies, asthma and autoimmune illnesses? If you do develop an autoimmune illness, even if it is years later, you can bet it will be deemed a coincidence.

Wilfully refusing to protect your family, friends and community by not taking the flu vaccine is an immoral act. In 1918-1919 millions died from a rare strain of flu, many in remote places where it would seem unlikely to appear. Choosing to put others at risk - perhaps at risk of losing there life - on grounds that amount to little more than arrogance, is a shameful burden of guilt your family, friends and you may not have the opportunity to live with.

What ever anyone else says it makes sence to me, you may think its b.s or just something to make money but realistically i think its a good idea for people to be getting this shot.

No one should be forced into it, but in our case where i work they pretty much are, and its not to bad of an idea considering people have died from this, underlying health conditions or not, people have died, thats what im thinking about. The people who have no consideration to wash their hands and make sure they are not spreading the germs around are the people who are going to get sick, and guess what no sympathy for me. Everyone needs to start acting like adults here, wash your hands cough into your arm as well as sneeze into your arms... stop the spread of germs and stop acting like infants. your supposed to be responsible.. im getting the h1n1 flu shot.

The number of Canadians that will get the flu shot is about the same as the number of people who vote. That means half of the population has tuned out the rhetoric coming from government. If, and I emphasize if, this H1N1 is as bad as the government claims then the responsibility for the disaster rests right on the politicians shoulders.

Time should have been spent on distribution today to the various pharmacies and then more people could be handled in a shorter time. But I guess that solution would not be a very good photo oppurtunity for the gov't officials handling this mess. Thank goodness this flu isn't something deadlier.

In general, the vast majority of medical professionals support the vaccine as both safe and an important part of minimizing the impact of this virus. And,since I am not a medical expert,I will bow to their understanding. And,I trust my doctor to give me the best advice available.I have no such faith in the internet, special interest groups, paranoid activists who see a conspiracy behind every door,or,for that matter, and with all due respect for your right to choose,a farmer from Saskatchewan. Suggesting we refuse medical care for those who refuse the vaccine,I hope was made with tongue in cheek. However, suggesting that those who do get sick, stay out of public places,is the right thing to do.I applaud that teacher for making a responsible choice, and urge teachers, and others who serve the public,to isolate themselves if they do get sick.To do otherwise may actually kill someone, and is,at the very least,a callous disregard for other people with rights of their own.No matter what you believe about the vaccine itself.

The concern I have about this shot and every other shot is the amount of Mercury. One shot supposedly has less that a tuna sandwich. No big deal. The danger is in the accumulation of Mercury in your body over time. Alzheimers is on the increase as well as Autism. Is there any link? I don't know. I believe chelation therapy removes lead, does it also remove Mercury. Does anyone out there know how to remove mercury from the body? Does anyone also know historically have the shots produced for a wide variety of diseases, have they contained an adjuvant and or Mercury?

Why are they not wearing gloves and how sterile is the place they are giving it from

I told my doctor awhile ago that I didn't need the flu shot (since I was seldom sick) and that I would accept the risk. He simply said that if I got the flu, I and others like me would be swamping all medical facilities. This would interfere with the hospitals and doctors dealing with the critical flu patients who needed medical intervention because of age or condition and all other necessary critical care issues in general. Made a lot of sense to me. I now get the required shots every year.

I must take this "still in questions" & "incomplete test done on human" h1N1 flu shot; otherwise, I can be sent home without pay if the pandemic does occur and I can't be utilized at the hospital to treat patients during the outbreak.

Being a healthcare professional and a health consumer myself, I fear that side-effect of this quickly created vaccine and no long term study/test to prove 100% safety is premature for public safety.

So, I would say "Thanks, but No Thanks"!!!!!

But I must take the damn shot because of the stupid hospital policy! If negative side effects turn up later on, I am so sueing all these so claimed "expert" medical officers and the government asses!

This H1N1 was fully active in October and should have been dealt with first. Now 4 clinics with hundreds of people possibly already infected standing in line for a shot? What a joke!

curious: The Government of Canada ordered 55 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine. At the time of order, it was not known how many doses of the vaccine would be required to reach full efficacy. Most influenza vaccines require two doses spaces 21 days apart for this, however because an adjuvant was used, you will only require one dose. (Again, not known at the time of order, so to be on the safe side, they ordered too much).

Only 20 people could be processed every 15 minutes or so I would have waited nearly till closing time to be seen. It was so disorderly that the staff had to whistle and yell instructions to the crowd and there were few chairs for very ill people including obvious cancer patients. The staff there told everyone that such a high response just wasn't anticipated. Although Orleans has a large french population, not a word was spoken in french either to the amassed and mostly patient crowd. Wade Ens is right -- the flu shot is about not passing it on to people who are vulnerable, and could die if they get it. It is still not clear why healthy young people die from this, and so it seems the only option is to get the vaccine. In the southern hemisphere, contrary to what some people in this forum think, ICUs and ERs were overtaken by the sick, and people with other illnesses which looked flu-like failed to receive the correct attention in some cases. The Northern hemisphere has been paying close attention to outbreaks in these southern countries to prepare as much as possible for high numbers of affected people, so we are benefitting from this knowledge. The fact that H1N1 first hit Canada in the spring/summer is why there have been relatively fewer cases than you'd expect for a pandemic -- now that fall and winter are upon us, we will all be indoors more with airconditioning / less fresh and circulating air. In public places, this is a concern for spreading the virus. And yes, some of the deaths in Canada are attributable to other health problems in those victims. But many people can have underlying health problems and not be aware of them until they fall sick; these are the people that most need protection from exposure to the virus, as they are more likely to have severe or fatal reactions but don't know they are in the risk group. In short, if we are to be responsible members of society, we should be getting the shot at least to avoid spreading the virus to those who are vulnerable, even if we believe our own bodies can 'fight it off'.

To ChrisI don't know where you got the idea that Canada's H1N1 shot has been tested just like any other flu shot, because it hasn't. It has been fast tracked. It also contains an adjuvant that it NOT in the seasonal flu shot. Adjuvants have been used in Europe in shots for seniors. This means the long term safety of such a shot hasn't been proven. This in no way is the same as your annual flu shot.

I'm disappointed that everyone against the vaccine is labelled a 'conspiratory theorist'. I don't believe there is any conspiracy. However, there was no conspiracy with Thalidomide, either. It was just a huge mistake. The conflicting reports issued as to the age most at risk, the doses required, the perceived reaction with seasonal flu shots all add up to Health Canada not fully understanding what it is dealing with. Therefore, knowing that the adjuvant component has not been tested long-term on anyone (you can't long-term test a senior) it is irresponsible to label someone a conspiracy-theorist because they are suspicious of this vaccine. They have every right to be so and that feeling should be respected. If Health Canada can address the safety issue by testing the adjuvants long term on young people, these fears will be addressed. Until then, I think it would have been prudent to use UN-adjuvanted vaccines as the US did. They further covered their asses by using five different suppliers.

The Canadian Government has failed the Canadian people in regards to their vaccination program. It is already to late for some because people have already died. Could they have been saved if the Canadian Government had acted faster. They were wrong in finishing up the production of the annual flu vaccine before stating on the H1N1 vaccine. The Australian government started their vaccination program at the beginning of October. It is not even flu season down there but they were concerned enough about foreign travellers bringing the H1N1 flu to Australia they went ahead with a mass vaccination program anyway. Now the Canadian Government is buying the vaccine for the pregnant women from Australia so it will be available earlier because they could get theirs out in time. In my area of Saskatchewan I am hearing there are already confirmend H1N1 cases they are not vaccinating health workers until next Monday then high risk later in the week . Then eventually the general public.

I think the whole thing has been botched. There are only three clinics available in Edmonton today...at three malls with line-ups 2-4hours long. If they immunize a 1000 an hour 12 hours a day, it will take 83 days to immunize the population of Edmonton. By that time, many will have already suffered and possibly have died from the flu.On the one hand, frightened Canadian health officials held up the vaccinations while the rest of the developed world forged ahead. The message was "be afraid". Now, they expect everyone not to be afraid. But even if we all wanted the vaccine, they have no apparent plan to deliver it before the winter is over.

To Pat, Montreal: You are absolutely correct in your comment. I am torn as to whether or not to get my kids vaccinated. My daughter is high functioning autistic, and I totally believe she got this disorder from the regular flu shots she received when she was 2-3 years old, due to another illnes she had at the time. She is now 13, but because this shot still contains thimerisol, which is the preservative in question in the US (in fact, class action suits are going on in the US right now regarding thimerisol and its links to autism), I question whether if she gets this vaccine, will it worsen her disorder and ruin all the progress made thus far? Also, my 7 year old son has never had a flu shot, and does not have autism, nor has he ever had the flu. With 1 in 150 children being diagnosed with some form of autism, one has to wonder where this is coming from. Those numbers are too high for it to be a genetic link.

You'd think with all the controversy surrounding thimerisol, that the drug companies would find some other preservative to use, that's much safer. And by the way, formeldehyde? They inject that into dead bodies! We get enough exposure to chemicals in our daily lives, why would we need more injected into our bodies that are supposed to protect us? Note that most allergies are actually from the preservatives that are being put into food, not the actual food itself. Interesting....

So, for those people who say "do your research", I've done plenty of it for my daughter and my son, and I don't like what I'm finding out...

I will vaccinate myself and family as I believe in protecting my community. I am also 5 months pregnant and have a 17 year old son and have NO idea how I am suppose to wait in line for a minimal of 4 hours with a 17 month. It is impossible!!!!! Can someone explain this to me why we have four clinics in a city of this size?

The statistics on this flu are remarkably unremarkable. When you consider that Canada has over 33 million people, and the US has over 300 million, the reported numbers that have died from it are minuscule, and they were people who had underlying medical conditions that made them susceptible to it. Not like the Spanish flu, where a conservative estimate is that up to 40 million people worldwide died. Canada lost about 25 million people. In today's population that would be a staggering loss of human life, just as it certainly was back then. Humans are subject to biological cycles of famine and disease, as are all other living creatures, and if we keep artificially suppressing the flue strains that keep mutating, perhaps one day soon another catastrophic virus will suddenly take us by storm. We will not be able to outsmart a pandemic forever. Is it better to keep suppressing the outbreaks, or to let nature run its course and natural selection preside? As one can see by the comments of those opposed to vaccination, they are very much in favor of nature taking its course. It will be difficult to prevent such a pandemic if such people are allowed to exercise their constitutional right to refuse medical treatment.

As an aside to my other post (when it gets posted) - if the government wants everyone to get this vaccine, why only 4 clinics to accommodate a city the size of Calgary? EVERY clinic in this city should be able to administer the vaccine - people are waiting between 2 and 7 hours and then having to wait another 40 minutes to fill out all the paperwork!! Hardly worth driving the distance that I'd have to drive just to get a 5 second needle! Ridiculous!

It's kind hard for pregnant women, asthmatics and so on to be "first in line" as encouraged when Alberta is taking the stance that anyone can show up at any time to get the H1N1 shot. Regardless of your personal feelings about flu shots, if certain groups are judged to be higher risk--and these stats are coming back the same across the developed world--then folks in those groups should have first dibs on the shot IF they want one. This free-for-all attitude in an embarrassment to Calgary, and unfair to those most vulnerable to serious complications from this disease.

let's see 1 million people divided by 4 is 250,000 divided by 1000 shots a day per clinic it should take 250 days to distribute the vacine in calgary.
we will all have had the H1N1 by that time.

This is exactly one of those cases where this is the end all be all (for now), recomended by everybody so everybody gets the shot. Then two years later you see the ads on TV saying "If you have taken this shot or drug and have had these issues contact us, you may be eligible to be part of our lawsuit" There just isn't enough long term data. I experienced the same thing when I had issues with my knee. My Doctor gave me a drug to bring down the swelling and I took one pill and tossed the rest because I don't agree with taking medication for every little thing. Then a year later I saw the lawsuit ads on TV for that drug. Too many questions still not answered, first there is talk of two strains and now it's not being mentioned. And our health minister is on TV with a blank look on her face not answering any questions, oh but there will be commercials later in the week.

They should put the forms online so people can fill out the forms before they arrive for the flu shot.People should not be turned away. They should tell people to stop lining up earlier by estimating how many they can handle by closing. These long lines will just discourage people from getting the vaccine. They should have more than 5 clinics in the city.

39,000 people die each year in the USA from normal or regular flu. To date, their Centre for Disease Control reports 1,000 deaths (of whom 100 are chidren). The media here is fear mongering pure and simple. Yes, there are some deaths here caused by H1N1 but the numbers would be within expected normal deaths attributable to flu season. More factual reporting plse.

Peoples fear mongering about the evils of vaccine is just plain dumb. Seatbelts saves thousands of lives every year but they also take a few so does that mean we stop wearing them? No of course not.

I am a teacher and all of this is quite appalling. But, where to start. Well, perhaps with this question: Why are teachers not placed on the high priority risk list, at the same level as the health care workers? We too are on the front line every day. Now it was mentioned today that perhaps all students should get the shot. You think! Why is it that it always takes a tragedy to get our officials moving and reconsidering. Then again, how many times has the "plan" changed so far! This whole situation is ridiculus. What will be the true benefit of getting a shot in December when it is happening now, and it is hitting hard. Children are our future, our most prized possession. The only thing I do agree with is that it really is our social responsibility. However, it seems they can' t even provide a big enough indoor facility with chairs for the long waiting times, that you will probably end up waiting in the cold outside. If you weren't sick before.... Good luck everyone!
