Quebec, following the lead of several other North American jurisdictions, plans to sue big tobacco companies for $30 billion to offset the cost of tobacco-related illnesses.

A spokesman for Justice Minister Kathleen Weil tells CTV News that government lawyers are working on a lawsuit but that there's no timetable for filing it.

The Charest government passed a law earlier this year that cleared the way for the lawsuit.

Several other provinces already have similar laws.

Quebec says that smoking costs taxpayers in the province $1 billion a year in direct and indirect costs. Tobacco also kills thousands of Quebecers every year.

Francois Damphousse of the Non-Smokers' Rights Association says the lawsuit makes sense given the link between cigarettes and a variety of illnesses.

"The tobacco manufacturers, they have a duty to warn the public about the harm caused by their products, the addiction caused by nicotine and they never did that," Damphousse told CTV's Derek Conlon.

"They claim that the public knew about that for many years but those were mostly the health agencies informing the public."

Ontario

Late last month Ontario announced it's suing the major cigarette makers for $50 billion for tobacco-related damages.

Ontario says that's how much smoking has cost the health care system, since 1955.

Montreal-based Imperial Tobacco says the lawsuit is hypocritical because governments have collected billions of dollars in taxes on a legal product.

If the Government can sue the tobacco companies. Can smokers sue the government for failing to protect them by preventing the sale of a deadly product?

How ironic that a governement that sanctions the sale of tobacco would turn around and then fine these very same companies for astronomical sums of money...all the while reaping profits from the sale of said products. I am personally a smoker and find this practice nothing short of disgusting and more than highly suspect. The governement is trying to put public opinion on their side all the while giving these companies license to sell their wares as the profits from the sale of these so called nefarious products are filling the governments coffers to the brim and they are not in the least bit interested in declaring these products illegal for sale as long as the cash cow is supplying funds for their blatantly mismanaged so-called public interests. It is about time that people woke up and saw who the real culprit is. People wake up!!! The government is screwing you blind left right and center and you are all asleep and not taking notice. What is wrong with you. The ones who are guilty are the ones making the laws to suit their own agendas and interests. When is the last time a politician did anything to impact your life in a positive way I ask you. The world would be a far better place if we had less politicians - as far as I am concerned they are the scum of the earth and taking us all for a ride.
