Ignatieff moves to shore up Liberal unity in Quebec

CTV.ca News Staff

Date: Sun. Oct. 4 2009 9:15 PM ET

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff sought to deliver a rousing speech before the party faithful in Quebec on Sunday, in an effort to present a united front after his lieutenant in the province, Denis Coderre, resigned last week.

"You have a simple task," he told a Liberal conference in Quebec City, speaking in French. "It's to convince Quebecers that we have to change and that we are the choice of change."

In a wide-ranging address, Ignatieff spoke of embracing green technology, encouraging trade with large developing countries such as Brazil and India, and criticized recent funding cuts for cultural programs.

At a press conference following his speech, he said his party would continue its campaign to bring down the Conservative-led government and spark an election. But he did not say when he would present Parliament with a new confidence motion.

"I'll decide if and when," he said. "I'll decide as we go along."

Ignatieff also told reporters that he will nominate someone to replace Coderre as Quebec lieutenant in the coming days, most likely another elected MP.

"I will name this representative, and I believe we will choose perhaps at the same time a leading organizer," he said.

Coderre resigned from his post as Ignatieff's Quebec lieutenant last week, due to a dispute about which candidate would run in Montreal's Outrement riding. Coderre had wanted businesswoman Nathalie Le Prohon to become the riding's Liberal candidate, but Ignatieff gave Martin Cauchon a chance to win the nomination.

"Recent events have, alas, proved that I no longer had the moral authority to occupy the post of Quebec lieutenant," Coderre said at a press conference in Montreal last Monday.

Coderre denied that his decision to step down had to do with the "settling of accounts" and said he still has "confidence" in Ignatieff. But he suggested the Liberal leader needs new advisers when it comes to Quebec.

Later, the Montreal MP made conciliatory comments on a prerecorded Quebec talk show that will air Sunday. But he was not expected to attend the party meeting in Quebec City.

Many in the Liberal party condemned Coderre for trying to block Cauchon from running in the Outrement riding.

Cauchon is a former justice minister in Paul Martin's government who left politics in 2004. He recently signalled his intention to return to Parliament Hill in the same riding he held for 11 years.

Rumours have circulated that Coderre sees Cauchon as a potential rival in future contests for the party's leadership. But Cauchon declined to confirm that a rivalry exists.

"When there's power struggles in the party, it's a good sign," Cauchon told CTV Question Period on Sunday.

Meanwhile, New Democrat Thomas Mulcair, the elected MP for Outrement, criticized Cauchon for laying claim to the riding.

"Mr. Cauchon has left politics because it suited him to leave politics; now he thinks he can just jump back in," he said. "I've got news for him: In the meantime, Outremont has become a solid NDP riding."

Although Mulcair is the only federal New Democrat who holds a riding in Quebec, he said his party has seen its support slowly rise in the province over the past few years, while Liberal support has faded.

Ignatieff declined to comment on the rift during an event on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the Liberal Leader warned there would be "consequences" for Coderre's behaviour.

However, a spokesman for Ignatieff confirmed on Friday that the Montreal MP will not be removed from caucus.

Ignatieff's style of wreckless behavior and then apologizing it for it later is all to familiar. The Liberal MP's tried to put on the best clapping possible, but you could sense the air of defeat in the room.

Ignatieff and his liberals have a Quebec lieutenant???? What is that all about?? I am from saskatchewan, (one Canadian province out of ten) I have NEVER heard of Saskatchewan having a liberal lieutenant! How about Manitoba, Alberta?? I could be wrong about this, but if I'm not, it seems the liberal party has a special place for Quebec. I feel jilted.

This not a riding dispute it is about Michael Ignatieff running a dictatorship out of Toronto and turning his back on the rest of Canada.

So they were able to get enough people to pay for the hall lol. Jean Chretian is pulling the strings in Quebec through Cauchan and Bob Rae. Quebec Liberals want nothing to do with Big M's right wing policies or with Toronto running the country. Soon the knives will be out and the Liberals can play another game of Lord of the Rings. Ok lets place bets on how long it will take the firefox Lib's to jack up the thumbs down. lol

Can't be doing all that well in Quebec when there are more people on stage than in the audience. Unlike Harper's piano playing and singing, this must be Ignatieff's version of "A little help from my friends."

The Liberals can try and put on a brave face but the Canadian people will see through the charade. Iggy was acclaimed to the Liberal throne with no input from the members, and now they wonder why there is infighting?

Ignatieff spoke about nothing new, nothing that I haven't heard before! So you are going "green", I already knew that. The Conservatives already have been and have/are established trade agreements! We still do not know you! All we know is that you do not appear to know what you stand for and thatby tomorrow you will have changed your mind. Time for a real Liberal leadership convention!

Ignatieff has no choice but to leave Coderre in caucus, because he would make as fast an exit as Dion if he did otherwise. The managerial mistake Iggy made was relying on Coderre in the first place. Managing people is a skill which takes years to develop, so maybe Iggy can compensate for this deficiency and his lack of policy, by telling us some really good jokes.

Ron

Guess he flipped again - after Coderre quit, Ignatieff said he wouldn't appoint another lieutenant - guess someone told him to change his mind again -- he may be smart but he certainly is a weak, flip-flopping "leader"

Wow the Liberal war office is working overtime on a Sunday with the thumbs down votes. Doesn't fool me, does it anyone? Iggy sounds tough but as long as Chretien and Kinsella are pulling the strings in this party, Iggy will do what he's told or ger bounced like the one's before him. I'm sure they'll let him know when they think the split in Quebec is solved , that is if it ever is.. Not a happy time to be a Liberal supporter.

Funny how all the comments are negative towards the Liberals, but the voting is positive...hmm? Liberals can vote for their man, but they can't post a good thing to say about him. How does that work? The Liberals must have some help from their friends and some great computer hackers here to make them appear to have support for Iffy .....which we really know they don't have.

First Ignatieff says…."You have a simple task; it's to convince Quebecers that we have to change and that we are the choice of change." So then he says in reference to the next non-confidence motion.“I'll decide if and when," he said. "I'll decide as we go along." Does it sound like a “choice of change”, to you? Well, times are different now, the opposition liberals face these days is unprecedented, beside that what I guess the channels of information for liberals are not honest to them. The real problem is liberals are not thinking about these non-visible aspects, they are still cut off from reality, perhaps next election will show them a face. Vancouver riding would be a real test. They will be fighting not NDP [face] but Conservative support as well. Lets see what they are able to pull from that riding. A real test for BC liberals & federal next month!

Is it really that difficult for CTV to prevent Liberal hackers from casting hundreds of thumbs up or down at a time? I'm actually embarrased for Liberals to see how desperate they have become. The Liberal brand used to stand for something. Now it's just a joke and the big "L" may as well stand for Losers because that's what the entire party has become.

The Liberal ship is battle damaged from a conflict onboard rather than with the enemy. Ignatief addressed the enemy and not the mutinous crew, in other words he missed the appropriate audience.Liberals have to learn that you can't always blame someone else for your shortcomings and expect others to follow you. You can't lead from behind!Policy pronouncements won't fix this hole, the water will come in and Iggy will be forced to abandon ship with his crew. This also is the wedge to get a new Liberal leader from Quebec, which unfortunately is the preferred status quo of that party. The party apparatus and elite in that province are not yet through exercising their total control.Codere just fired the starting gun and Ignatief is running backwards in this race! This is the beginning of the end for him! Watch for Cauchon to tilt for the prize!

Ignatieff says they have a simple task, "To convince Quebeckers that we need to change." That has to be the simplest task in political history! Everybody knows they need to change, Quebeckers and the rest of Canada. The real task, which I don't think he is up to, is to actually change the Liberal pary in any meaningful way. I used to vote Liberal but it will take more change than I expect can happen in my lifetime to convince me to do so again.

Perhaps Iggy's previous existence as a professor may explain his actions in adopting such a top down approach to matters. It isn't called ivory tower thinking for nothing. A professor instructs his students how things are to be done and usually resists original thinking, no matter how well presented - when it clashes with "the teacher's way". The tendency is to express things in how "I" want them done - now go and do them. Iggy has done this time and again. This is not appropriate to a party which has so many factions. The thin line between leadership which is collaborative and dictatorship which is egocentric seems lost on this man. When confronted with the obvious errors of his decisions, he blithely changes positions as though it is all writing on a fresh page and that there were no previous problems. I almost feel sorry for this fellow - flipping and flopping about like a fish out of water - which in many ways he resembles, As to changing a lifetime of habit - good luck. I really don't think he gets it - and I could never have any confidence in his words, positions or assurances - he is just not credible in my mind, nor is he consistent - where DOES he stand on any issue? How about tomorrow? The group around him reminds me of the group of yesmen around the Emperor in the magic clothes - Please! - somebody get a grip and give him a reality check - along with a one-way ticket back to academia.

After watching the speech, I only wish I had the bobble-head concession - it must be worth a fortune.I also find it interesting that, after critizing all the Conservating spending, he wants to unleash a new round of spending on "green" issues; on trade matters; on "creativity" (of artists also, not to leave a political stone unturned) - he wrote books so he knows about art issues - Harper performed with Mah - er, oops. Now are we going to spend or reduce spending, are we proposing spending on creating jobs - isn't that what the Conservatives have been spending on also - perhaps not employing enough Liberal insiders, I guess. After listening to the speech, I cannot follow it , I cannot detect a consistent or coherent message- and I don't think he can either! If he wanted to reaveal a PLAN, this would have been a good opportunity - but he loaded the good ship Liberal with platitudes - not plans. I have never heard such a disjointed ramble in my life. This is a speech? No, it is a disjointed, uninspiring load of ..... words, and nothing more. If there was an intended message, it was lost in the verbiage. And the heads around him continue to bobble - just like around the ill-starred Dion before the fall.

So Iggy and liberals are back to America bashing once again. 2 years year ago the PM was getting to cozy with the Americans by building strong trade relationship with them. 6 months ago Iggy said we need to build a strong trade relationship with the Obama Administration and crticed Harper for standing up and defending free trade against U.S. protectionism. And now the great Iggy says we need to cut our trade ties with the evil U.S.A and look to Brazil, India and china. So when all else fails and your support is falling, go back to Bashing the good old U.S.A.

Fracturing within the Liberal Party was predictable. The way in which Ignatieff was "crowned" as leader and the fact that a socialist like Bob Rae has gained so much influence in a short time is a perfect recipe for chaos and division. Until the Grits get another iron-fisted leader like Chretien was, their future looks pretty bleak.

"I'll decide if and when," he said. "I'll decide as we go along." - Nice to see this narcissist is taking a stand -- of course, we have see him take a stand before and reverse himself within days - remember, he was going to leave the post of Quebec Lieutenant vacant -- oops - now he will fill it. The problem with the Liberal party today, is it has no direction - they want power and the rest of the stuff is somewhere down the list. They recruited Ignatieff because he looked like another Trudeau and would bring them to power within months. Now, that we get to see this dud, they are scrambling to patch the holes in his character in the hopes they will get back to the trough before him destroys the party. Funny, if he ever gets there, the damage will be done to all of us, but heck, they don't care - they'll have what they want - access to tax dollars - the rest is somewhere down the list.
