LOS ANGELES — Chris Brown says he remembers beating Rihanna and that a brief interview clip making the rounds online Monday in which he said he didn't recall the incident "is not representative of what I said."

The R&B singer tells People magazine in a lengthy statement that he "misspoke" during the 30-second clip and that he was asked "something like 4 or 5 times" about the altercation with Rihanna during an hourlong interview.

"Of course I remember what happened," Brown said in a statement late Monday. "Several times during the interview, my mother said that I came to her right afterwards and told her everything. But it was and still is a blur."

In his first public interviews on the subject, the Brown told People magazine and CNN's Larry King that his feelings haven't changed for Rihanna since the February beating that left her bloody and bruised.

"I never fell out of love with her," Brown told People. "That just wouldn't go away."

Brown told King in an interview scheduled to air on Wednesday night that he is still in shock about his actions. Brown's mother, Joyce Hawkins, accompanied her son during both interviews.

"When I look at it now, it's just like, wow, like, I can't believe that that actually happened," Brown told King.

Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in June and last week was sentenced to five years of probation, a year of domestic violence counselling and six months of community labour. He will serve his sentence in his home state of Virginia.

A judge also ordered Brown, 20, and Rihanna, 21, to stay away from each other.

A police affidavit and probation report detail the beating, which included Brown hitting, biting and choking Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. The attack occurred in a car after the couple attended a pre-Grammy Awards party.

Brown's interview with People will be published in an issue released on Friday. He told the magazine he called his mother, who was a domestic violence victim, the night of the attack.

"I was distraught. I went to my mom on the same night and told (her) what happened and broke down."

Brown released a video statement last month in which he apologized to fans and said he had repeatedly apologized to Rihanna for the attack.

Pathetic....he can't remember beating her and states "(...)it's just like, wow, like, I can't believe that that actually happened".
Believe it...you're an abuser and a coward who got off easy. It's just like, wow, like, I hope YOU get the living crap beat out of you one day and see if you can remember that.

Gosh.....if he can't remember 'savagely beating' his girlfriend....then, how could he have 'gone to his Mother the same night to tell her what happened before breaking down'?

I'm sick of the lies that people tell to get out of taking responsibility for their childish temper-tantrums that carry serious consequences. To everyone who uses 'blacking out' as an excuse for outrageous behaviour I say, would you please grab hold of some integrity and man/woman up!

Am I the only one left shaking his head at the way money and lawyers keep all the slag like this piece of dog droppings out of jail...

Would have loved to see him get seven years, and have a few of the REAL tough guys in jail adjust his attitude a little!

But,I suppose all the kids will be lining up to buy his latest record....

Hold on here...how can we blame him. He may have been high, maybe he's bi-polar,or perhaps he's a schizophrenic, maybe a manic depressive or he may be suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder, then again maybe he wasn't shown enough love as a toddler.

I don't see any of these lame excuses being used in this story and that leaves one to wonder if Mr. Brown is actually taking full resposibilty for his actions.

Well if he has no memory of it...how will he know to stop it next time? And there will be a next time...doesn't that make him quite a risk to the public?

Don't get me wrong, I am not defending Chris Brown because what he did was wrong but I do know what it is like to be sooooo angry that you black out and don't remember... I have been there... and was told about the fight after it happened. So it is possible, a little late with the "don't remember" line but non the less, it is still possible. Guess you have to experience it first hand to understand.

I know this won't be popular, but I've been in the same boat. I've had to take responsibility for my actions, and in my 30's, it's amazing how despite nearly two decades of hard work to control the beast, the things I saw as a 2-3 year old happen to my mother at the hands of my father still haunt me. I even had a public incident that made the papers in my home town, where I am well known. It is still my first instinct in moments of anxiety or extreme pressure. I can't explain it in short order, but this guy's on a long road. Justice should be about recovery, and if he does his work, there's a chance he can still be a "good" guy. As for his girlfriend, I hope she finds a guy who can give her the love she deserves.

Oh, sure. He blacked out just as his fist was on it's way towards her face. To Larry King. Do yourself a really great favour, Larry, and don't let CNN broadcast that interview. It will only damage your integrity as a respected broadcaster, if you allow this scumbag, woman beater to use your show to spew such utter garbage on the airwaves. I also blame the weak kneed judge, for being sucked in by Brown's weepy, high priced lawyers AND the State prosecutors for the deal making. And We think Canada's justice system stinks. Poor Rihanna sure didn't see "Justice Served".
