Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby touched down in a military helicopter in Halifax on Friday morning, lifting the Stanley Cup above his head as hundreds of fans cheered.

The NHL star is celebrating his 22nd birthday by bringing the trophy back to Cole Harbour, N.S., the suburban Halifax community where he learned to skate.

Crosby and the cup, which was reportedly visible from the ground as the Sea King helicopter approached the wharf, landed on the deck of the HCMS Preserver. Hundreds of members of the military and their families were on hand for the landing, as was Defence Minister Peter MacKay. Many wore Penguins jerseys.

"For him to bring it here to Cole Harbour and raise the awareness of our community here - we're very thankful for him for doing that," Lorelei Nicoll, a city councilor from Cole Harbour, told CTV's Canada AM.

She said Crosby's success has made her community known internationally, and that it has become difficult to book ice time in the town, largely due to Crosby's success.

"There are more and more children enrolling in hockey because they all have an aspiration to be like Sidney, to gain the same success as he has," Nicoll said.

A parade has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. local time, which Crosby will lead. Thousands of people are expected to attend. Montreal musician Sam Roberts is also scheduled to play a concert later in the day.

Halifax Mayor Peter J. Kelly has said he will declare the day "Sidney Crosby Day."

In an interview with CTV News Channel, Kelly called the event "just like Christmas" for the kids who have gathered to see Crosby, and praised his leadership skills.

Fans in Cole Harbour will have a chance to meet the star. They will also be able to see some commemorative items from earlier in his young career, including a famous washing machine he used for target practice as a child.

The Penguins beat the Detroit Red Wings in seven games to win the NHL championship, making Crosby the youngest team captain in NHL history to hoist the Stanley Cup.

He has been a hometown hero since playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as a teenager. Years before he was drafted to the NHL, Wayne Gretzky predicted that Crosby would become a hockey legend.

No disrespect to SC, but is this national news? When his teammate Jordan Staal brought the cup to Thunder Bay, it was the news of the day LOCALLY-don't think it made national headlines.

Nothing wrong with the rustcopter, the Brits use them as well. They just put a little more money into them then we do to maintain the flight status of the old birds.

Can't wait until Van cover 2010 to hopefully see a gold performance from Canada in Hockey!!

I love hockey, don't get me wrong! "Way to go Crosby" I do hate taxes! So....
Does the NHL have a massive debt like the Canadian Government? Please tell me that this NHL promo helicopter ride was not paid for by the tax payer!!

While I admire this young man for his hockey ability, I would never go so far as to call him a great Canadian. To me, a great Canadian is someone who makes a substantial contribution to their country and community. Being payed millions to play for an American team, in my view, does not define a great Canadian. In any event, I wish him well.

Newsworthy - I would rather read about this than the same old boring doom and gloom crap that is reported.

We all know the H1N1 or swine, whatever they are calling it today is going to end the world, the economy is in the tank, and the unions are a bunch of kids in a sand box that leave when they don't get their way - You call that news.

Lighten up - loosen that tie around your neck, it's friday!!!

Sidney Crosby is bringing the America's Cup back to Canada for a visit? How nice of him to rub our nose in it, it's not Canada's Stanley Cup any more it's America's Cup now. The US can buy everything they want and that includes our hockey icon, so they can stick this where the "sun don't shine"!

JABBA: What a nasty thing to say to a person on their birthday!! Just because Sydney has become famous is no reason he should be a target for your bitterness. This is something he has dreamed about his entire life. His teamates that you mentioned are happy for him just as he is happy for them. Hockey is a team sport.
Sidney is a class act just like Wayne Gretzky is but being from Brantford, Ontario I remember all the bitter comments that followed Wayne. Small minded, bitter, jealous people just can't stand to see success in others. I am so happy for anyone who has a dream and can work hard to make it happen.

CONGRATULATIONS SIDNEY!!! Ignore the naysayers and hold your head high!! You have made your hometown, your parents and friends proud and should be very proud of yourself.

Gary and Larry, I agree! He would be a great Canadian if he and others turned down their over paid salaries for less and played here in Canada. We have the best players in the world but the worst teams. Makes no sense!

The article should give credit where credit is ude. Mike grant (1895) was the youngest person ever to captain a a stanley cup team to victory. Yes Crosby is in the nhl, but not in the history of the trophy. The article should mention this.

What the hell is Crosby doing being ferried around in a military helicopter... at whose expense?

Unreal! Like he cant afford his own plane that we have to foot this bill? Please explain that we aren't paying for this non sense.

I was always impressed with Marty Brodeur's bringing the cup to Montreal, setting up a place where kids could play street hockey for it, and then having the support of the SQ to shut down the street traffic.

Imagine that you are ten. You are dashing up the road with the ball on your stick, and you get to shoot for the cup. Shoot! Shoot!

God bless them

That truly is what it's about.

Is this a Cole Harbour story? Of course. Is it a Halifax story? No doubt! Is it a Nova Scotia story? Obviously. But it IS also a national story for Canadians. I'm a little surprised that there is not an ongoing story of where in Canada the cup is visiting (Thunder Bay, in particular), especially in a year when no Canadian teams were in the final. For many Canadians (maybe most), having a hometown player bring home the cup is close to that town winning the cup (because they did win part of it). And it's good news, and we can always use good news.

K Rose

To all those who left negative and ignorant comments...did your mother's never teach you if you had nothing good to say to say nothing at all? As far as the comment of the Stanley Cup being an American thing, take a look around. Crosby is Canadian and it will never matter where he plays, he will always be one of us. Sidney Crosby is not only an amazing hockey player, he also inspires kids everywhere to put a little more heart in their game so as to be more like him. And in my book, that is what is really important about this guy.

Paul
said

Don Cherry would be jumping up and down in support. Yay military

JAYROCK
said

What is wrong with you people?

1.) Yes he plays for an American team... BECAUSE HE WAS DRAFTED BY THEM. Remember Lindros? How'd you feel about that?

2.) Any time an NHL Star wants to share some Stanley Cup time with our service men and women, I say taxpayer's money well spent.

3.) Anyone who thinks this kid is not a superstar knows NOTHING about hockey. He has had the weight of every one of you wannabe's on his back since #99 signaled him out when he was a kid. Last I checked, #99 knows his hockey. And guess what... Crosby delivered. How many 21 year olds could claim that? None.

4.) All you whiners will be eating crow when Crosby brings you Olympic Gold in 2010, 2014, and 2018.

Suck it up already. This is a good day for NS and Canadian hockey.

GO SENS!

Do your R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H people.

Ovechkin has won more awards, has more points etc than Crosby.

I love this country....some of you are sooooooo ridiculous in your thought patterns.

YAY! Sidney...you were inneffective in that win for the cup..you didn't produce in the finals. Malkin and Talbot where the ones who won that cup...whilst you fizzled out.

Happy Birthday though. Love how MY TAX $$$ pay for you to be ferried round in seakings and LAV's....very nice.

Reccesion too! People losing $$ and jobs...Priceless....

Yep. I must be "bitter" for seeing it how it REALLY is....

For all those negative comments: Get A Life. At least he plays for a team that can play hockey and not the loser teams we have in Canada. He at least knows where his roots are by coming home.
So he comes back with all the hoopla. We need to respect our heroes. What did you do with your life at his age, eh!
His number 87 represents his year born and also represents the eighth month and seventh day of that month he was born. Clever one eh!
Happy Birthday Sid and ignore the comments from the other jealous and ignorant commentors.

Who paid for all of this? I bet Crosby didn't pay to fly around in a helicopter and use tax payer funded dollars. He makes millions and millions - this is a TOTAL waste of tax payer dollars when we are cutting programs for literacy, the arts, housing, hospitals, education and on and on.
I get really tired of millionaire sports figures being turned into gods. They do little for their communities except bask in the glory.
What a waste
