Prime Minister Stephen Harper dismissed reports that he pocketed a communion wafer as "ridiculous" and "terrible" and said he would never do such a thing.
Earlier this week, controversy broke out after a video clip emerged that appeared to show Harper accepting a communion wafer at the funeral for former governor general Romeo Leblanc, but not consuming it.
Allegations emerged that Harper had slipped the wafer into his jacket pocket.
He strenuously denied those reports on Friday while speaking to reporters at G8 meetings in L'Aquila, Italy,
"First of all as a Christian I've never refused communion when offered to me, that is actually pretty important to me," Harper said.
He went on to suggest that even reporting the story, is irresponsible on the part of the media.
"I think somebody running a story -- and I don't know where the responsibility lies -- somebody running an unsubstantiated story that I would stick communion bread in my pocket is really absurd, and I think it's a real, frankly, a low point, a low moment in journalism whoever is responsible for this," Harper said.
"It's a terrible story and a ridiculous story and not based on anything as near as I can tell."
After the video clip was released, a spokesperson for the PMO said Harper was offered the wafer by a Catholic priest at the funeral, that he accepted it and then consumed it.
The Catholic church considers the communion host to be sacred, and pocketing the wafer would have been considered offensive.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Considering 90% of us Canadians have sex out of marriage, drink too much, smoke dope, spend all our money on self serving products, we are all destined to the darkside anyways, according to the rule book.

Unless someone has a picture of him putting the wafer in his pocket, this is a stupid story meant to stir people up. Get over it.

Perhaps Harper was thinking that everyone would consume after all had received it, I don’t know. It’s a big stretch to believe that he would ask for the communion and then not eat it. Having said all that, he likely should’ve asked for a blessing instead (I did not partake in the United church service’s communion). At any rate, this story’s been totally overblown, and I have to agree with Harper that this certainly isn’t our media’s finest hour.

We still demand to know What did he do with the Body Of Christ or what does he plan to do with it.
In the past he has sadi many thing that are totally untrue and we all know them, but this is very different we are talking about the Body of Christ. What is he planning to do with it.

Nope. Sorry. We cannot drop this non-story. You watch, even though we're all pretty much in agreement that this is malicious media dribble, on the next election campaign, Commrade Layton or Micheal Ignoramous will slip in some snide comment like, " Harper can't be trusted with a wafer, How do we trust him with our money"

One only has to watch evening television (and it's popularity), to realize how brain dead our society is becoming.
Watching one media clip on T.V., or reading one article on high speed internet does not properly educate a person. However, the trend in the western world appears to be that people are demanding change based on the little or no correct understanding.
If you believe in evolution, and that we evolved from apes, is it possible we could evolve back into them?

I have been in a situation myself when I was unsure whether I should be partaking communion.

The confidence of all Canadians in the religious convictions of our leaders, in the integrity of the media, and the doctrines of the Catholic church are obviously at stake. Royal Commission now!

The pocket almost seems the lesser of two evils. The pocket is innocent of heresy, doesn't deny the transubstantiated Real Presence of Christ Jesus under the species of bread and wine, and hasn't affirmed that its government will do nothing whatsoever about abortion.

Besides, if he did accept the communion host and consumed it despite not being a Catholic that is actually more offensive to Catholics since it is mocking their beliefs. Whichever route Harper chose he was wrong. For Catholic and non-Catholic alike there are several methods to politely refuse the host when offered by a priest without offending anyone. Harper should have known that. On the other hand, it never ceases to amaze me how trivial moments of religious etiquette or religious insults, either perceived or real, can dominate the news when there are real issues that deserve coverage.

The PM was at a funeral & articles like this show no respect for the elected PM or the unfortunate deceased.
I cannot help feeling that if Ignatief had been involved, the media would congratulate his perceived sleight of hand.

If it wasn't for CTV's Liberal shills, this story would have been D.O.A. Or, better yet, it would never have appeared in the first place.
Sadly, no doubt to CTV's glee, for those who only read headlines, the damage has already been done.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say that taking communion from a Catholic priest did make him a little uncomfortable. Perhaps he took the wafer and returned to his seat and consumed it after a moment of quiet reflection.
If that is the case, then say so!! Don't try and tell us the video lies. He definitely did not swallow the wafer when it was given to him.
It wasn't "news" when the story broke, but once again his side-stepping the truth, makes it news.

"The prime minister did consume the host; he did not put it in his pocket"
Why is it that the accusation is splashed across front pages everywhere, but the exoneration is buried or ignored completely?

He is protestant therefore against the Roman Catholic Church. Not sure why considering the type of personalism he adheres to ? !
But being as far right as he truly is, he'll fit right in with this pope.
