Prime Minister Stephen Harper dismissed reports that he pocketed a communion wafer as "ridiculous" and "terrible" and said he would never do such a thing.

Earlier this week, controversy broke out after a video clip emerged that appeared to show Harper accepting a communion wafer at the funeral for former governor general Romeo Leblanc, but not consuming it.

Allegations emerged that Harper had slipped the wafer into his jacket pocket.

He strenuously denied those reports on Friday while speaking to reporters at G8 meetings in L'Aquila, Italy,

"First of all as a Christian I've never refused communion when offered to me, that is actually pretty important to me," Harper said.

He went on to suggest that even reporting the story, is irresponsible on the part of the media.

"I think somebody running a story -- and I don't know where the responsibility lies -- somebody running an unsubstantiated story that I would stick communion bread in my pocket is really absurd, and I think it's a real, frankly, a low point, a low moment in journalism whoever is responsible for this," Harper said.

"It's a terrible story and a ridiculous story and not based on anything as near as I can tell."

After the video clip was released, a spokesperson for the PMO said Harper was offered the wafer by a Catholic priest at the funeral, that he accepted it and then consumed it.

The Catholic church considers the communion host to be sacred, and pocketing the wafer would have been considered offensive.

This is the Prime Minister. The man in charge. Who cares about such silly trivial liberal issues. The church is unimportant and has been unimportant for the last 300 years.

Considering 90% of us Canadians have sex out of marriage, drink too much, smoke dope, spend all our money on self serving products, we are all destined to the darkside anyways, according to the rule book.

These comments coming from a guy who runs a despicable attack ad campaign where they take portions of quotes made by political leaders and trying to put his twist on the opposition leaders political convictions only makes me think that someone is crying wolf. Hello, cauldron, this is kettle, yeah, black. Wow, when things don't go his way, this guy sure cries a lot. I have little faith in this guy and when the media attacks him, to claim that this story is "irresponsible" and "absurd".....well, it looks good on you as I've had to put up with your meager attack ads for the last few years now. And for the record Harper, the only "low point" to be had will be your lasting legacy as a Canadian Prime Minister. And people wonder why we don't have a majority for the Conservatives. Hasn't history taught us anything?

With MJ dead and buried, I guess there is no important "news" to write about. The media can't find anything of substance to report so all must be well with world. Thank you Mr Harper for giving the world something of "sustance" to talk about.

If in the video you couldn't see his pants, does that mean he wasn't wearing any?

Unless someone has a picture of him putting the wafer in his pocket, this is a stupid story meant to stir people up. Get over it.

Anyone who has read any past post of mine will know that I definetly do not support Steven Harper and the Conservatives and usually take any chance to speak against them (they make it pretty easy). But this and the G8 photo issue were blown way out of proportion. It must have been a very slow news week.

I’m a Catholic but was at a United church service not too long ago. I was surprised when the whole congregation was given bread and wine (grape juice actually I believe), but that everyone waited so that they could all consume it at the same time. It was also surprising to me to learn that this wasn’t a weekly thing, but a monthly occurrence, unlike the Catholic church.

Perhaps Harper was thinking that everyone would consume after all had received it, I don’t know. It’s a big stretch to believe that he would ask for the communion and then not eat it. Having said all that, he likely should’ve asked for a blessing instead (I did not partake in the United church service’s communion). At any rate, this story’s been totally overblown, and I have to agree with Harper that this certainly isn’t our media’s finest hour.

Communion taken with those from an evangelical background is received, held while you pray and then consumed together at the same time as everyone else. If Mr. Harper is from this background, he may not have immediately consumed the communion but followed his normal tradition and prayed and then consumed it. All in all, it's rather ridiculous that the issue has even been raised. Somebody needs to get a life.

If this is news, then Canada does not have any interesting news ? If Harper put the wafer in his pocket, so what, good for him. I would not eat it myself because it came from someone else's hand. Please, let's not get into this religious thing again.

Oh this is getting silly. My suggestion to Harper would be to spray a little of Mr. Chretien's pepper spray on the communion wafer and then eat it. The press loved the pepper spray thing but I guess that was a simpler, gentler time when most of the media wasn't searching for ANYTHING they could nail the Prime Minister with.

Our prime minister is at a very important meeting. This is very important work, but he is responding to nonsense instead of responding to important issues..Somwone please explain to me why this is.The more this type of thing happens, the more the credibility of reporters is eroded away. For one thing it is not a "story" of any worth,it just makes it look like another "Let's take another shot at Harper".which just goes to show that the majority of the media are biased. It's a sad day again when the reporters again try to make the news instead of reporting it unbiased.

It is sad that our reporters can only see the low side of this story, the only good that can come out of this story is that it shows the beliefs of a Roman catholic. How about a follow up on our belief of what this wafer means to a practicing catholic, maybe this reporter can not write such a story, to deep for him/her

There doesn't seem to be any clear proof that Harper consumed the host or stashed it in his pocket. Anyway, maybe now he knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of negative ads and negative press - what goes around comes around.

All must be right with the world if this is a news story. Did we already find out what killed Jacko? Did we solve world hunger? Is there world peace? Has the recession ended? So why is this even being covered? Anything that will paint our PM in a bad light is being thrown out in the hopes that something will stick. Can we please get on to real stories.

I see what he is saying but the video shown at youtube by the canadian Press is very clear with no error for mistakes.

We still demand to know What did he do with the Body Of Christ or what does he plan to do with it.
In the past he has sadi many thing that are totally untrue and we all know them, but this is very different we are talking about the Body of Christ. What is he planning to do with it.

Nope. Sorry. We cannot drop this non-story. You watch, even though we're all pretty much in agreement that this is malicious media dribble, on the next election campaign, Commrade Layton or Micheal Ignoramous will slip in some snide comment like, " Harper can't be trusted with a wafer, How do we trust him with our money"

Harper is criticizing a journalist for reaching a low point in journalism?!? Considering his obsession with attack ads and ridiculing his opposition with unsubstantiated claims, this is pretty rich coming from him!

Harper comments on this being a low point in journalism. This coming from a man who thrives on low points in journalism, at least those low points directed at other politicians. Lets call a spade a spade. If the man pocketed the wafer, then that is what it is. Lets not sugar coat the wafer.

Is the media a direct reflection of the people? If so, we're in trouble. There are certain groups of our national media that don't miss an opportunity to trash a Conservative government. Hopefully, the Canadian people will see through this.

One only has to watch evening television (and it's popularity), to realize how brain dead our society is becoming.

Watching one media clip on T.V., or reading one article on high speed internet does not properly educate a person. However, the trend in the western world appears to be that people are demanding change based on the little or no correct understanding.

If you believe in evolution, and that we evolved from apes, is it possible we could evolve back into them?

I have been in a situation myself when I was unsure whether I should be partaking communion.

Clearly we need a commission of inquiry to get to the bottom of this, or at least to the bottom of the Prime Minister's suit jacket pocket.

The confidence of all Canadians in the religious convictions of our leaders, in the integrity of the media, and the doctrines of the Catholic church are obviously at stake. Royal Commission now!

So, we're faced with yet another problem. Having a personal admission that he partook of -- not pocketed! -- the Most Holy, Pure and Stainless Body and Blood of Our Lord, God, and Saviour Jesus Christ, should we now ask for an explanation as to why the Prime Minister of Canada, a nation filled with devout Roman Catholics, did not know that he, being a member of a heretical evangelical Protestant denomination, was not permitted to partake thereof? Are there no experts in protocol left to advise on such a basic matter of comportment in the Roman Catholic Church? And the worth priest, did he not consider the implications of giving Holy Communion to a non-Catholic who has publically stated that his government has no intention of revisiting the abortion debate?

The pocket almost seems the lesser of two evils. The pocket is innocent of heresy, doesn't deny the transubstantiated Real Presence of Christ Jesus under the species of bread and wine, and hasn't affirmed that its government will do nothing whatsoever about abortion.

I could just imagine the howling and gnashing of teeth if we saw Harper refusing to take the wafer from the priest. In my church (evangelical baptist), you wait till all are served. If I went to a Chatholic sevice I would hide in the back pew for fear of looking like a fool or offending someone. Harper as PM had to be front and centre. Now lets drop this. Communion is about your personal relationship with God. If Harper ate it not is not our business people!

Reason #10 341 why church and state should be separate.
Besides, if he did accept the communion host and consumed it despite not being a Catholic that is actually more offensive to Catholics since it is mocking their beliefs. Whichever route Harper chose he was wrong. For Catholic and non-Catholic alike there are several methods to politely refuse the host when offered by a priest without offending anyone. Harper should have known that. On the other hand, it never ceases to amaze me how trivial moments of religious etiquette or religious insults, either perceived or real, can dominate the news when there are real issues that deserve coverage.

I absolutely agree with the Prime Minister. This continuing story is certainly a low point in journalism, but I fear not the lowest the media will ever go. I know it's summer and there's not much news but whoever started this story really needs to get a life or, foregoing that, a real job.

Only in Canada (not even Britain) would the media select this story for continous headlines.

The PM was at a funeral & articles like this show no respect for the elected PM or the unfortunate deceased.
I cannot help feeling that if Ignatief had been involved, the media would congratulate his perceived sleight of hand.

The Speaker of the Senate has already said that he was sitting just behind Stephen Harper and he saw Harper put the wafer in his mouth.

If it wasn't for CTV's Liberal shills, this story would have been D.O.A. Or, better yet, it would never have appeared in the first place.

Sadly, no doubt to CTV's glee, for those who only read headlines, the damage has already been done.

From all accounts, Harper is very serious about his Christian faith. He is a member of one of the (small c) conservative Protestant denominations.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say that taking communion from a Catholic priest did make him a little uncomfortable. Perhaps he took the wafer and returned to his seat and consumed it after a moment of quiet reflection.

If that is the case, then say so!! Don't try and tell us the video lies. He definitely did not swallow the wafer when it was given to him.

It wasn't "news" when the story broke, but once again his side-stepping the truth, makes it news.

My husband showed me a *tiny* article on page 8 of the Calgary Herald this morning that cleared Stephen Harper completely. Here is the direct quote from father Arthur Bourgeois who presided over the funeral and presented the PM with the wafer:

"The prime minister did consume the host; he did not put it in his pocket"

Why is it that the accusation is splashed across front pages everywhere, but the exoneration is buried or ignored completely?

As a Catholic myself, I don't consider this a non-issue or nonsense, this is actually quite a big deal. If Harper, as the youtube video shows quite clearly, did put the host in his pocket, then this a big offense to Catholic tradition. For Catholics, the communion wafer doesn't merely symbolize Jesus Christ, it IS Jesus Christ. This is the equivalent of sticking Jesus in your pocket. So please, have a little respect for other people's beliefs, and don't dismiss this as ridiculous without even understanding the issue.

The last time I checked, we here in Canada were very fortunate to have separation of the church and state! Who cares what he did with a piece of bread? This is NOT news! How about the fact that he's continuing his pathetic attacks on Ignatieff (who I don't like, either, btw) using false information? That's something I consider news. What goes down during a funeral that he attended as a civilian, not as PM is not.

Harper is not a Roman Catholic in good standing and should not have been given the host in the first place. It is still inconclusive what he did with the wafer and when?

Why would he want to eat something another man had in his bare hand? Sounds like the PM is practicing sound hygiene habits. The only thing that's absurd is people thinking that some silly wafer has any impact whatsoever on their lives.

One would think that there would be more important issues other then whether or not the prime minister swallowed or pocketed the communion wafer! There are starving, abused, children in our country, abused woman, abused elders, teen addicts and teen prostitutes, the list is endless yet you would report on something so ridiculous! You should be ashamed of yourselves! Surely there are more newsworthy items other than that. Maybe you should take all the energy you injected into this ridiculous commentary and use it to bring attention to the real important issues in Canada.

I agree completely with the PM. Whoever decided to broadcast this as news needs to take a few refresher courses in journalism. If you are reporting for CTV or CBC then report properly. If you are reporting for the National Enquirer or Star then, sure, make up dumb stories ripe for fodder.

This is a guy who supported the idea of Prayers to start the day in parlliament.

He is protestant therefore against the Roman Catholic Church. Not sure why considering the type of personalism he adheres to ? !

But being as far right as he truly is, he'll fit right in with this pope.
