Canada may have its own fuzzy Zapruder film.
Controversy has broken out over a film clip that shows Prime Minister Stephen Harper taking a communion wafer, but does not show him consuming it.
However, a spokesperson for Harper said the prime minister "immediately" swallowed the wafer, which the Roman Catholic church considers sacred.
"At the end of the service, he was offered communion. He accepted communion and he consumed it," Dimitri Soudas said
But video of the incident, available on YouTube, shows the prime minister accepting the wafer from the priest and not consuming it for the duration of the time Harper is in frame, which lasts about five seconds.
The incident occurred at the Roman Catholic funeral of former governor general Romeo Leblanc in Memramcook, N.B.
A Roman Catholic priest says it's unclear if Harper pocketed the wafer -- as some critics allege -- and said if that allegation was true it would be scandalous.
"It's worse than a faux pas, it's a scandal from the Catholic point of view," Msgr. Brian Henneberry, vicar general and chancellor in the Diocese of Saint John in New Brunswick, told the New Brunswick Telegraph Journal.
Harper is a Protestant and would not normally consume Roman Catholic communion.
"If the prime minister is not a Catholic, he should not have been receiving communion and if he comes up it places the priest in an awkward position, especially at a national funeral because everyone is watching," Henneberry said.
Soudas defended Harper taking the wafer, which Catholics consider to be the body of Christ and Protestants consider to be a symbol, saying: "Who is he to judge a priest offering him communion?"
Harper is in Italy for a G8 summit and has an audience with Pope Benedict on Saturday.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

I may be an atheist but when I participate in weddings, funerals, and other religious rites, I have enough respect for participants to treat their rituals and beliefs with respect and dignity.
Clearly Mr. Harper only has respect for his own beliefs, which explains why he refuses to work with other parties or look out for the rights and needs of ALL Canadians.

I am a Catholic but honestly believe reform is desperately needed in my church. Allow marriage or ministers, allow women priests, birth control, same sex etc.
Now this to me is not an issue. Harper was at a funeral, if he was not a Catholic maybe he didn't know enough not to take the wafer. If he did pocket the wafer maybe he did so because he feared the backlash over not respecting catholics and Mr. Leblanc etc.
In short, don't like Conservative gov't, do like the Catholic church although favour reform, and am not offended by anything Mr. Harper did... while at the funeral.

That being said, I can understand how the PM was confused, seeing as how the presiding Catholic priest also seems to be confused.
What should have happened (and what the PM's aids should have explained to him) is that he should have crossed his arms in front of his body when he went up, so that the priest would give him a blessing instead of the Host.

After seeing the video it is obvious Harper did not eat "the host" when it was presented to him so he must have pocketed it. This is another case of lack of honesty by the Prime Minister and his spokesperson.
Taking communion within a Catholic Church service is one of the most sacred of rites I know, I used to be a Catholic.
If you didn't know what to do, don't lie about not eating it.

The smartest thing he could have done was watch the others around him to make sure he was partaking properly, however one would have to forgive him for not eating it right away if he is not accustomed to this tradition. At least he was attempting to show his respects.
And nobody can say he didn't eat it; you have no video evidence and would be jumping to conclusions if you did.

Religion in general and particularly the R.C. church seem more focused on picayune control issues like this one rather than the real well-being of their members and humanity in general.

Shame on the Vicar for suggesting inappropriate behaviour with insufficient evidence.
Shame on the Vicar for not having Outrage for the Churches cover up of sexual abuses of our children and turning them against Christ and the church!!!

Non Christians are not permitted to take part in the sacred act of communion so I would bve rather offended if you came to my church and treated my religous beliefs with "respect and dignity" meaning you participated in communion,
another point since Harper is a protestant and likely is allowed to take part in communion at his own church why is a catholic priest getting so riled up is this back in the days of the reformation?

I take HUGE offence to ANYONE who critisizes ANYONE on how they practice their religion. Anybody who thinks unkind of how someone accepts communion in ANY church, is not a true follower of either Protestant or Catholic. Churches are supposed to extend and reach out to others. Not condemn on imaginary practices. If God wanted us to only honor him in only one way, then God would have had an 11th comandment passed on to us all.

Also, it is a sad commentary when a priest is using a video feed to spy on people in the church. Are there cameras in the confessionals now?

First, you are only supposed to take part in communion if you are a Catholic (or Lutheran or Protestant or what have you). It's in fact more disrespectful to take part in a ceremony you shouldn't be involved in.
Second, why is this "scandalous"? It's really quite pathetic what passes for a national scandal in this country.

1) Harper should NOT have left his seat to approach the priest.
2) the Priest should have announced that NO protestant could receive the host - and should not have offered the Host to a known Protestant.

I have to ask, "Why was he offered one"?
Clearly, any clergy entertaining the Prime Minister of Canada should have done their homework and afforded him the courtesy of offering or not as is proper.
Shame on this minister for putting the Prime Minister of Canada into an awkward position in the first place!
Shame on the rest of you, who think it's your place to criticize him for being put into this awkward situation by an unthinking priest.

Did the Youtube poster indicate that Harper consumed it later when he was out of frame? Or is this just a matter of posting a select clip for nefarious purposes?
Either way, I fail to see why such a thing should even turn up on the news. Has CTV even made efforts to ensure that there is any truth to the rumor, or is this article a case of helping spread the rumor?
More to the point, is there nothing of greater importance to report on?

First Communion is a rite in other churches namely the Anglican Church. The Roman Catholic church does not allow non Roman Catholics to participate in the rite of communion. However in the Anglican Church you can participate in the communion as long as you are a baptized Christian.
On the grand scale of everything going on in the world is this really an important story!

First if all, "Adam, Montreal", he is simply a man trying to attend a funeral. No one is forced to know the customs of the church they are attending for an event. In fact the Church, with its achaic beliefs on anything ranging from birth control, same sex relationships and evolution should be happy to have the leader of our country and the national media in their house. Secondly how do you know his spokesman is lying? Were you there and watched him pocket it?
Also Msgr. Brian Henneberry, I respect your belief system but comon "Scandalous"?!?! Get over yourself and your church. Believe it or not Canada is a secular nation, therefore it isnt his duty to know your rituals!
Im disgusted by this story. Why not talk about how incompetent he is, or what he has accomplished (if anything).. You know, like news??

Harper is an evangelical, not a catholic.
I would consider it a greater insult to Catholics to "pretend" to partake in their ritual, than to quietly not eat the waffer...

What is even more worrisome is that a number of people are taking it seriously. whether or not the PM pockets the communion bread is really not an important issue.
However, if he lied about what he did with the communion bread - that IS an issue.

Would we be talking about this if a Muslim leader did not partake of the wafer? No! But there is a double standard when it comes to Harper and also to Christians. This is not simply a matter of a leader offending someone at a mere ceremony. So, I applaud Harper if he did not take the wafer because it shows that he stands by his beliefs and principles no matter who that may offend...something I know that any politically correct fool would not understand!

That said, RC priests seldom take the time to point this out - which, on an occasion where many in attendance would be non-RC, they should take the time to do. To assume that non-RCs know the Church's position on this is a bit much.
Personally, I find the RC clergy (though not necessarily the church's lay adherents) to be very exclusionary rather than inclusionary - which seems, to me, to contradict pretty much all the teachings of Jesus.
