Sarah Palin says she will step down as Alaska's governor, fueling speculation the former Republican vice-presidential candidate will make a run for the White House in 2012.

Palin, who made the sudden announcement at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, told reporters Friday that her last day on the job will be July 26.

Neither Palin nor her spokesman would talk specifically about her future plans, but she said that she wanted to make a "positive change outside government."

Palin also hinted that she was frustrated with her current political title.

"I cannot stand here as your governor and allow the millions of dollars and all that time go to waste just so I can hold the title of governor," Palin said.

In a Twitter message posted later in the day, Palin said she would soon release more details: "We'll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election ... this is in Alaska's best interest, my family's happy ... it is good. Stay tuned"

Palin was elected as Alaska governor in 2006 but rose to national prominence last year when former presidential candidate Sen. John McCain picked her as his running mate.

Palin's popularity in her home state has declined amid months of partisan battles at the state legislature. Her term was set to expire in 2010.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will take over the governor's office and will be inaugurated in Fairbanks at the end of July, according to a Palin spokesman.

The announcement also surprised Parnell, who only found out about Palin's decision on Wednesday evening.

The writing is on the wall... Usually the Republican Party selects the next choice from the previous battle, which it will be Mitt Romney vs former VP candidate Sarah Palin.

She will make a lot more from her upcoming book and speaking tour...

It is simply astounding that first she thinks she is Presidential material, and second, that anyone in their right mind would vote for her.

Do people really consider Palin as a serious candidate for President!!? I'm still trying to figure out how she became Governor. A woman President would be an amazing accomplishment, but her..give me a break.

Let the games begin!

She can't finish her term as a governor, but is thinking about running for Prez?

Unbelieveable!

She wants the state to continue without interruption - and what would that interruption be? Preoccupation with self promotion and family disfunctionality?

Doug,

Have you ever met the woman? Or, are you relying on media reports and blog drivel.

I doubt anyone could run a large state and have no intelligence. I suspect your knowledge of government and issues - limited as it seems to be - exceed your or mine by a consderable amount.

It's always easy to sit on the sidelines and hurl insults and slights. Any chance you're an NDPer?

BTW - her qualifications on paper are almost exactly those of one FRD. Know who he was?

Well if Sarah Palin becomes president in 2012... we know that those ancient Mayan predictions were correct.

A friend of mine in Alaska described her as a "loose cannon" and said that it was doubtful that she would be re-elected...she has offended many including many republicans with her antics...hopefully she can use the time off to study world affairs and maybe even read a newspaper.

Republicans will have a decent primary coming up, however, if NJ falls to the republicans and 2010 is a comeback, well it could become rather interesting... I'm hoping Mike Pence makes a run, solid guy.

Sarah Palin running as President against President Obama! The very thought makes me giggle.

Believe it or not there are still avid supporters of this woman in the Republican Party's far right.

She still has credibility with them because her stands on family values issues.

They don't care about her utterly terrible yet mercifully brief tenure in office.

As for her chances in 2012 her main competition as some saw it was Mark Sanford and you can forget him now.

Unless Charlie Crist or some other Republican up and comer can stop her Obama is a sure thing to be re-elected in 2012.

Doug - It is also simply astounding that the US voted for Bush...twice! You may forget that Palin will gather a fairly strong gathering from voters who will live and die as republicans, regardless of whom is at the helm. I think they may also be praying that she can gather support from more women and young voters; with which the Democrats clearly have the advantage.

The scary thought is that if she were somehow (miracle?) able to win, she would become one of the most powerful people in the world! - and you thought we were in trouble now!

But lets be honest - who really cares?? Only the naive will say that she will be the next president. We all know that with the overwhelming support Obama gathered during this past election, he will be at minimum a two term President.

Good riddance...the woman is a joke and can not be taken seriously.

Shannon, the fact that she is a paper tiger in no way qualifies her to be President. Did you not pay attention to the last election in the US? Did you not see her interviewed? One does not have to be an NDP'r to seriously question Palin's suitability for the highest office. We should support strong women, not any women.

I think by 2012 Americans will have tired of the style over substance of BO. Americans will want to try someone with substance and maybe some style.

What ahs BO done besides make promises that he hasn't kept?

Gitmo is still open for business. Not only that, it is sounding like it may stay open for the foreseable future. It is looking like the Busg administration may have been right about the handling of these 'enemy types'.

Palin will make the care interesting, if that is what she is about to do.

From what I could tell, the Republicans couldn't wait to kick her out of the plane with her Lagerfeld parachute over Alaska... and as Reginaldo points out, it is more than a little likely that she herself is the interuption that she mentions, and has been pressured by the Republican party to step down.

Connie,

I did not say she should be President. I doubt the Republican contender is on the windscreen currently.

What I was highlighting is the rather pitiful tendency for people to assign labels and brand people with little to no real, objective knowledge.

This attack is precisely what keeps good people out of politics. My question was to all who label without knowing anything other than chatter. Without suggesting Palin is appropriate for the White House it stands that she is considerably more intelligent - and likely a better presenter and thinker unde pressure - than most who post here. I'd like to see Doug or others in a one-on-one televised debate with Palin - of Bush - or Biden.

There is no way she would ever be elected to sit in Washington. She has gone as far as she can go in politics. She should retire to the woods with her firearms with her No.1 dude and shoot wayward wolves . Perhaps she can be an announcer for the dog sled races in Alaska.

Shannon, I ask again. Did you not see her interviewed? And you speak of debate. She repeated memorized lines. There was no debate. We do need good people in politics and this seems to be Doug's and others point.

As we all witnessed when Dion was leader of the Liberals--his biggest backer was the conservatives. When he was elected leader--there was a collective sigh heard throughout the conservative party.

Same scenario applies to Palin--her biggest backers will be the Democrats--they couldn't ask for a better opponent to run against.

You know guys, I always loved her. Always. But only like a woman. I think Hillary (whom I don't like much) is the better candidate. I hope next American president is going to be Hillary. She has what it takes. Sarah doesn't. I adore her as a woman, but it takes more than to be a woman to take the office.

Without Carter you would not have had Reagan come along.

Democrats are completely running the show and spending the US into oblivion.

She will be a great candidate in 2012.

You people on here need to get a clue - you are being brainwashed by mainstream liberal muppets in the media.

Wake up.

The Democrats had the biggest opportunity ever with the economic meltdown and they are spending like drunken sailors, which will inevitably make things even worse.

Obama never worked a day in the private sector and never managed anything other than his ego.

The big Democrat opportunity is being wasted and is going to turn into a huge Republican opportunity when people in the US realise who they really voted for in 2008

If the Republicans are looking for some recovery in 2012 Palin is definitely not the way to go.

To be credible with any voters outside of previously committed ultra right wing Republicans they have to find themselves a candidate 25 years younger than John McCain and half as extreme and twice as intellectual as Palin or Bush.

Just ask our own Conservative party leaders.

They finally found a ticket to marginal recovery through a move to the center which is still where most politcal support lies.

The vast majority of voters are not extremists of any sort.

They look at two things when deciding who to vote for.

1. the candidate/party that best relfects their views on the most issues

2. the candidate/party that offends or scares them the least.

I don't think Palin has the political IQ to appeal to centerist voters and rise any higher.

Oh Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live are going to love Sarah Palin for giving them more material for their skits.

Personally, I do not think she is Presidential material, nor do I think she will be the next President of the United States.

But then again, I was the same person who said, we'll never see a Black President in our lifetime and didn't think Obama would be elected, but I was wrong.

Should be interesting to see what is going to happen.

If Sarah Palin's speeches are any indication, this woman is more dangerous than Dick Cheney. Personnaly, I don't think she could organize a one-man rush to a two-holed outhouse. Moreover, I do not believe that she has the intellect to be President.
