Sarah Palin says she will step down as Alaska's governor, fueling speculation the former Republican vice-presidential candidate will make a run for the White House in 2012.
Palin, who made the sudden announcement at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, told reporters Friday that her last day on the job will be July 26.
Neither Palin nor her spokesman would talk specifically about her future plans, but she said that she wanted to make a "positive change outside government."
Palin also hinted that she was frustrated with her current political title.
"I cannot stand here as your governor and allow the millions of dollars and all that time go to waste just so I can hold the title of governor," Palin said.
In a Twitter message posted later in the day, Palin said she would soon release more details: "We'll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election ... this is in Alaska's best interest, my family's happy ... it is good. Stay tuned"
Palin was elected as Alaska governor in 2006 but rose to national prominence last year when former presidential candidate Sen. John McCain picked her as his running mate.
Palin's popularity in her home state has declined amid months of partisan battles at the state legislature. Her term was set to expire in 2010.
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will take over the governor's office and will be inaugurated in Fairbanks at the end of July, according to a Palin spokesman.
The announcement also surprised Parnell, who only found out about Palin's decision on Wednesday evening.

Perhaps this will knock some sense into parents who let their children drink soda pop. We have two daughters, ages 6 and 8, and we are shocked at how many of their friends regularly drink pop. Our girls probably have had 5 glasses of pop in their entire life!

She can't finish her term as a governor, but is thinking about running for Prez?
Unbelieveable!
She wants the state to continue without interruption - and what would that interruption be? Preoccupation with self promotion and family disfunctionality?

Have you ever met the woman? Or, are you relying on media reports and blog drivel.
I doubt anyone could run a large state and have no intelligence. I suspect your knowledge of government and issues - limited as it seems to be - exceed your or mine by a consderable amount.
It's always easy to sit on the sidelines and hurl insults and slights. Any chance you're an NDPer?
BTW - her qualifications on paper are almost exactly those of one FRD. Know who he was?

She still has credibility with them because her stands on family values issues.
They don't care about her utterly terrible yet mercifully brief tenure in office.
As for her chances in 2012 her main competition as some saw it was Mark Sanford and you can forget him now.
Unless Charlie Crist or some other Republican up and comer can stop her Obama is a sure thing to be re-elected in 2012.

The scary thought is that if she were somehow (miracle?) able to win, she would become one of the most powerful people in the world! - and you thought we were in trouble now!
But lets be honest - who really cares?? Only the naive will say that she will be the next president. We all know that with the overwhelming support Obama gathered during this past election, he will be at minimum a two term President.

What ahs BO done besides make promises that he hasn't kept?
Gitmo is still open for business. Not only that, it is sounding like it may stay open for the foreseable future. It is looking like the Busg administration may have been right about the handling of these 'enemy types'.
Palin will make the care interesting, if that is what she is about to do.

I did not say she should be President. I doubt the Republican contender is on the windscreen currently.
What I was highlighting is the rather pitiful tendency for people to assign labels and brand people with little to no real, objective knowledge.
This attack is precisely what keeps good people out of politics. My question was to all who label without knowing anything other than chatter. Without suggesting Palin is appropriate for the White House it stands that she is considerably more intelligent - and likely a better presenter and thinker unde pressure - than most who post here. I'd like to see Doug or others in a one-on-one televised debate with Palin - of Bush - or Biden.

No Shannon, we saw her abysmal performance the last time around. How would knowing her personally change that?! Did YOU see her interviews?

Same scenario applies to Palin--her biggest backers will be the Democrats--they couldn't ask for a better opponent to run against.

Democrats are completely running the show and spending the US into oblivion.
She will be a great candidate in 2012.
You people on here need to get a clue - you are being brainwashed by mainstream liberal muppets in the media.
Wake up.
The Democrats had the biggest opportunity ever with the economic meltdown and they are spending like drunken sailors, which will inevitably make things even worse.
Obama never worked a day in the private sector and never managed anything other than his ego.
The big Democrat opportunity is being wasted and is going to turn into a huge Republican opportunity when people in the US realise who they really voted for in 2008

To be credible with any voters outside of previously committed ultra right wing Republicans they have to find themselves a candidate 25 years younger than John McCain and half as extreme and twice as intellectual as Palin or Bush.
Just ask our own Conservative party leaders.
They finally found a ticket to marginal recovery through a move to the center which is still where most politcal support lies.
The vast majority of voters are not extremists of any sort.
They look at two things when deciding who to vote for.
1. the candidate/party that best relfects their views on the most issues
2. the candidate/party that offends or scares them the least.
I don't think Palin has the political IQ to appeal to centerist voters and rise any higher.

Give your head a shake. This lady is not very bright, and certainly not presidential material -- even of the local PTA.

Personally, I do not think she is Presidential material, nor do I think she will be the next President of the United States.
But then again, I was the same person who said, we'll never see a Black President in our lifetime and didn't think Obama would be elected, but I was wrong.
Should be interesting to see what is going to happen.
