The World Wildlife Fund gives Canada a failing grade on its climate change practices, ranking the country behind all other major industrialized nations, including the U.S.
Canada finished in eighth place among the G8 nations -- its worst finish since the WWF first began releasing the annual report card three years ago.
The report finds that Canada is one of the few G8 countries whose emissions are still rising -- largely due to expanding activity in Alberta's tar sands.
And Canada's per-capita emissions are among the worst in the G8, along with sixth-place finisher Russia.
Even the United States is now ahead of Canada in terms of its efforts to combat climate change, says Gerald Butts, president and CEO of WWF Canada.
"Canada has never done particularly well on the scorecard," Butts told CTV's Canada AM. "But what's happened this year is with the new Obama administration in the United States, they've done more in the last six months than the United States has done in the last 30 years on climate."
Changes include:
- New incentives for the creation and use of green energy
- A national emissions standards for vehicles
- A climate change bill is now moving through congress
The first two steps moved the U.S. up the ranks -- from last place to second-last, Butts said.
Germany, the U.K. and France are at the top of the list, based on improvements they have managed to make to their emissions.
While Canada's Conservative government has talked tough on taking steps to combat climate change, very little has actually been done, Butts said.
Canada's mid to long-term greenhouse gas targets are inadequate, Butts said, and a plan to curb emissions that was created last year, has not yet been implemented.
That means Canada is beginning to lag behind in an area the WWF sees as the future for industrialized economies.
"Our concern at WWF is we're way behind the times on this, that we're being surpassed by other major economies that are building a green jobs economy that our people are going to be left out on."
The Group of Eight Industrialized Nations includes Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S.
The WWF is calling on G8 leaders to take aim at climate change during upcoming meetings.

It's a great time to live in Canada, despite what some environmentally minded groups may say. I'd have thought the WWF would want to be a bit more credible and have done a bit more research? But then I guess the more people that jump on the band wagon, the more donations groups like the WWF would hope to secure.

I think it would be a good time to give the matter some though in Canada. Lets see what we can come up with to reduce carbon emissions and general pollution. Even if someone doesn't believe in global warming reducing pollution is still beneficial since the emissions have other harmful side effects as well like acid rain, smog and more respiratory diseases.

Please provide references in peer reviewed journals to document your statement. To those who are happy to see their quality of life "protected," they should be aware that climate change will begin reducing the quality of life worldwide quite soon. Poorer countries will be impacted disproportionately, even though they have not emitted most of the offending greenhouse gases, which is perhaps why those in wealthier countries seem not to care.

Global climate change is here - it is not a myth, it is not an unproven theory or a means in which the WWF and other organizations alike are trying to take our money. It is a REALITY and we need to take the appropriate steps to rectify our failing grade on this annual assessment.
The effects of global climate change are not a 'maybe'. The alteration of the natural greenhouse effect has already taken place and the result is an unstable climate pattern which has already peered its head in the form of more catastrophic storms, rising sea levels, and sinking cities (i.e. Venice, the coast of New York - yes look it up).
As part of the G8, we have accepted our responsibility as part of this world to take action, help prevent and rectify what we have put out of place!

Here are some ideas for Stephen Harper to adopt:
1. Increase funding to renewable energy projects like wind, hydro, solar, tidal, and microwave power.
2. Give individuals a $3,000 to $4,000 tax credit for purchasing or leasing vehicles with a minimum city and highway fuel economy of 45 Miles Per Imperial Gallon.
For anyone purchasing or leasing hybrid or other low emissions vehicles, an individual would receive a $10,000 tax incentive.
If incentives to shift to low emission vehicles work for Germany and USA, it can work for Canada.
Shame on Stephen Harper for getting rid of the low emission vehicle incentive.
3. Impose tough penalties on major polluters such as the Alberta Oil Patch and Nova Scotia Power.
4. Increase funding to provinces and territories to move away from dirty energy sources such as coal to renewable energy sources using the Quebec and Newfoundland models, provinces which rely heavily on renewable energy sources like Hydro Power.
5. Impose tax incentives to anyone who switches from incadencent light bulbs to Light Emitting Diode light bulbs.
Compact Flourescent Bulbs would not qualify as it produces dirty electricity, bad on the enviornment due to mercury content, and is linked to health problems, while LEDs are safe and produces low levels of dirty electricity.

For a look at the misuse and perversion of science to support politics and $$$, read James Hogan's "Kicking the Sacred Cow". He provides a good overview of this debate and others. (He's not a climate scientist-he talks to and listens to them!)
I'm not a climate scientist myself, but even I can read the records and see the cycles. Climate is not a static thing, but is always changing and we are cooler than we were 500 years ago. Take a look at the real situation before you decide for yourself.

"A national emissions standards for vehicles
A climate change bill is now moving through congress". And Bill Moyer's delusion about importing oil from Canada is foolish. The WWF includes this and every diversion you can think of. Annie, lets face it your post has no facts. But doug takes the cake. "Lets not sacrifice our standard of living". What standard of living are you talking about Doug? So far in 2009, 4 months have been colder and 2 months have been hotter than corresponding months in 2008. The average temperature difference (spread over 6 months) was COLDER by 0.67 degrees Celsius.
While there may well be some sort of climate change going on, local temperature change seems to be going in the opposite direction contrary to what "experts" predicted. Their theories and policies about emissions may be wrong. A "greenhouse effect" is supposed to increase, not decrease temperatures.
People, check the temperature records from your heating bills.

They probably purposely wait for a hot day and say ``this is a result of global warming``, because saying during one of those days during the winter (which in Toronto lasted almost to May with cold weather) wouldnt carry much weight.
Come out with a report like this in December when its -15C and people will probably ignore it.

As for the liberals coming in and saving Canada, as many people have indicated. Where were they after they signed Kyoto and then let it sit for years only to come with a plan a few weeks before an election. Now they blame everyone else, when they had a lot of years to get the ball rolling??? Its one thing to name your dog after the accord, but another to actually do something about it.

Although the environmental goon squad of semi-informed armchair crusaders believe that "climate change" is an EXACT science underpinned by a wealth of NON-CONFLICTING evidence pointing in one clear direction, the FACT is that there is NOT a full scientific consensus as to CAUSE and EFFECT here.
The greatest hurdle to properly addressing the issue, at a governmental level and a societal level, resides in the fact that most people are, actually, OPEN-MINDED, and are continually having their head filled with CONFLICTING information surrounding greenhouse gases, emissions, pollution, natural cyclical climate evolution, and international industrialization.
It's time Western governments collectively wrestle this issue away from the biased scientists and organized "political" groups on both sides of the argument (issue) and conduct a proper study, or series of studies, that enable us to nail it down and move forward accordingly and appropriately.
Thus far, we're just polluting the atmosphere with a lot of hot air. We have neither a proper grasp of the problem nor, in turn, a CREDIBLE SOLUTION.
Frank Buchan (Vauxhall, Alberta by way of Ontario)

I won't argue whether climate change is happening, but I will note that all of these "studies" and "comparisons" are foolishness. The subjective comparison of objective measure is flawed; and the objective approach is fraught with too many unknowns. (By the way, I do believe the climate is changing, I just disagree with "some" of the causes listed by various organisations.)
There may be no excuse for us taking such poor care of our environment, but listening to any of these fools is not going to solve our problems -- because their agenda has nothing to do with the environment.

As the ice at the poles melt, huge amount of cold water cool the water conveyors of this planet (such as the Gulf Stream),which have the effect of cooling the planet.
For instance, the conveyor of hot water from the Gulf of Mexico gets chilled by the cold water coming from the polar ice caps and places like our own East coast (and USA), England (and Europe) all will cool down as a result.
Glbal cooling is a sign of global warming. As the ice recedes from the poles, there is less and less ice to reflect back the sun's heat and light, and the ice will continue to melt causing more and more cold water to cool the oceans and thus our planet.
This is a very serious problem and is NOT a partisan political issue, that is unoess the Conservatives continue to pretend there is no problem.
The Conservatives came to power on lies:
1) The Liberals were guilty of Ad Scam (Gomery exeronerated them of wrong-doing)
ii) The Liberals did nothing to reduce our greenhouse gases - this would be true if they had not signed Kyoto.
The turth is that it is the Conservatives who are not only doing nothing on this serious matter, they have actually embarassed us on the world stage by lobbying other nations to also do nothing to prevent climate change.
Time for the Conservatives to stop being so incompetent on this and so many other files including on Chalk River.
The irony is that as global cooling continues, there will be negative effects caused by this cooling e.g. higher heating costs for Canadians and we will all pay the price of doing nothing to stop global warming.

"Our concern at WWF is we're way behind the times on this, that we're being surpassed by other major economies that are building a green jobs economy that our people are going to be left out on." "Our concern at WWF is we're way behind the times on this, that we're being surpassed by other major economies that are building a green jobs economy that our people are going to be left out on." says Gerald Butts, president and CEO of WWF Canada.
Note the “we’re”. This report is not from the WWF, it is from the Canadian Branch of the WWF. So one can see the motivation behind placing Canada last? This makes it even more of a farce than I thought it was. The other farce in it all is the failure of the so called MSM to investigate and challenge the veracity of these claims. Instead, because they are on a vendetta against the Tories (CTV is leading the charge, still mad about Duffy I guess?) they resort to their tabloid sort of hit and run smear journalism. Another reason that the average Canadian no longer trusts or believes anything that they say.

Before you start stating that we as Canadians do nothing to recycle compared to the US you may want to retract that. In the province of Quebec specifically the South Shore of Mtl, we have large recycling bins that majority of the people fill. Hydro Quebec also offers incentives to cut back on the usage of power, etc. Having come back recently from the South (TN & MS), little is done there for recycling and they all drive around in gas guzzlers. Also, would like to point out that majority of people here bring their own bags to grocery stores as well as Walmart. Again where I was in the US, loads of plastic bags used... so like I said before accusing the rest of Canada not being like the US, you may want to do some research first.

Many people seem to be happy we have not sacrificed our quality of life to mitigate the damage of industrialization and unrestrained resource consumption. I get the feeling they did not grow up in the sixties, and were not acquainted with the quality of life then, and have no idea of what quality of life means.
A great contributor to that QoL was the magical unfolding marvel of life on this beautiful planet. We did not realize then that the green carpet of life was being rolled up all over the planet and it would lead to this. We should have listened to prophets like Joni Mitchell: "They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot."
It is sad indeed to witness the impending demise of so much natural life on earth - and only in a single generation! It is sadder yet to hear the sanctimonious voices of denial from those who have the most to lose.

Sure you can focus on the small bit of negative in our country and make it larger than life to get attention, but it's just not as bad as you feel it is. Focus on all the great things about this country, not one or two issues that most everyone is contributing to on a daily basis.
Climate change is NOT going to improve NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO TRY AND CHANGE IT! Whatever damage has been done is done. You can't reverse it or make it better. Everyday people use things that contribute to it. Are we all supposed to change how we live our personal lives just to make the environmentalists happy? I don't think so! Count me out! And yes, I am comfortable sleeping at night knowing what my children and grandchildren will deal with, not much worse than what I am dealing with now.
Life in Canada is pretty d good, and if you don't think so, go live in another country for a year where the standard of living is not nearly as nice and see how much you become thankful for what you have here, issues and all.

Even given the likely fact that the Canadian news sites are heavily frequented by Conservative shills trying to create the illusion of consensus around their views, based on the responses I have to think that as a civilization we're probably screwed.
Think of all the predicted crises past - food shortages due to overpopulation, acid rain destorying our waterways, disappearance of the ozone layer frying us all with UV rays. All real dangers, and all averted precisely because a critical mass of people were scared enough to do something about them in time.
Now look at our current crises - scientific agriculture no longer producing increasing food yields to feed the rising population, peak oil, global warming threatening to decimate agriculture and shrivel fresh water supplies in much of the global south and southern parts of the developed north.
We've averted a few crises and so instead of being grateful for avoiding some close calls, we think we never had a problem in the first place and scoff at predictions of doom. But let me tell you, disasters have befallen human societies in the past and our society is just as vulnerable.
We have become complacent, and significant sectors of our society are vocally in denial. This time, the will will not exist to do what needs to be done and the deniers will get to experience the consequences of their folly first hand.
We are in for an endless series of oil-price-induced recessions, which will soften us up and render us less capable of dealing with climate-change-induced food and water shortages and the wars that will inevitably follow.
Maybe not the end of the world, but not a time you would choose to live in. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Well John, we can deny it because for one 'all the evidence' indicated global cooling has been taking place since 1998. We can deny it because 'all the evidence' indicates the earth warms up and cools off on a regular irregular basis and that such cycles are linked primary to solar cycles, not increases in CO2. We can deny it John because reliable data shows that during the 90s other planets and their moons were warming up at a rate similiar to or even greater than earth warming - notwithstanding, the absence of large SUVs and Oils Sands operations found on their surfaces. We can deny it John because all the recent real scientific research is demonstrating that there is no link between CO2 and so called Global Warming. We can deny it John because the one time this junk science was actually tested in a court of law the Warmmongers (Gore et al) lost because of the admissions made by their own experts. I could go on John but are you starting to get the point.
