HALIFAX, N.S. — Halifax's Pier 21 has been named a national museum, just the second museum outside of Ottawa to be given the designation.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement today after touring the museum at the pier, a point of entry to Canada for more than one million immigrants.

Harper says the designation recognizes the contribution made by immigrants to the country's history.

The shed on the Halifax wharf closed on March 8, 1971, almost 43 years after its official opening, as more immigrants arrived in Canada by plane.

Harper says one in five Canadians have a connection to Pier 21.

As a Nova Scotian - I wish to thank Prime Minister Harper for this recognition....This Government continues to do the "right" thing for all Canadians, even though it is very difficult for them to get positive coverage through the media for its accompolishments.... The media is so liberal bias, they refuse to report the positive changes this Conservative Government has made! For example, if this was a liberal announcement, we would have pages and pages of coverage, this being a conservative announcement, it is but a blurp and the media is hoping we do not see it!. They even have it now, so if you vote a negative against their liberals, the counter will give a plus for the liberals as well... If that is all over the blogs, their voting irregularity! Yesterday - some Conservative Conservative made a little blurp on the internet - it was front page coverage - this announcement for thousands of Canadians, never reported, because it might give the PM a bit of positive coverage!

I am planning on visiting Nova Scotia this summer and Pier 21 is a must-see. I'm really looking forward to visiting this museum. And I think it definitely deserves this status of national musuem.

Finally! A move Harper has made that I can agree with.

The folks at Pier 21, the city of Halifax and the province of Nova Scotia should be proud.

Good decision PM Harper. I arrived at Pier 21, Halifax in 1952 from Scotland at age 15 with family. Now it will always be recognized as a historical site for so many Canadian immigrants.

It is time to quit running the country as if immigration is the only thing that happens or ever happened here. No wonder Quebec can't stop thinking of separating. Progress lies in the direction of putting ethnicity in the same category as religion, a private matter, and quit making political hay. Canadians live here.

Both my parents are named at Pier 21, they were very proud as immigrants from Italy to be named

Thank you Mr. Harper, second generations are greatly appreciated for this gesture

THANK you Prime Minister Harper!

This is a smart move and one that most of us Nova Scotians
appreciate!

Again nice to see our government working through the "summer break"!

I welcome this announcement, as it presents a wider scope through which to view the unity pledge that I authored in the 1990's.

We, the descendants of Canada’s Aboriginal, French and English founders,
and of all others who later arrived to help build this nation,
stand in unity as witness to this pledge.

Remembering that Canada’s provinces and territories have been settled
by peoples whose mother tongues, heritage and values differed,
we pledge to one another:

To recognize, to respect, and to celebrate Canada’s diversity,
lest a loss of identity suffers unto our descendants;

To embrace tolerance, equality, sharing and compassion
as the moral cornerstones of our great nation;

To bond together as one in the pursuit of dignity, health,
prosperity and happiness for all Canadians;

To forever preserve and promote this mission
that we so proudly share.

Hmmm…… While the pier 21, and lets not forget the National assembly lands in Quebec, decisions are deemed good things, let us not forget also, that these are just attention getter announcements by PM Harper. An obvious political ploy by him to have you believe what a good guy he is? Don’t be fooled by all the do-dads, no doubt there will be more to come?

Pity these announcements couldn’t have been made and shared, while still in the house, but then he would not have got the same attention in the shuffle, which is what this is all about.

Heads up folks, wonder boy is at it again, must be an election brewing..
