Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach said he was disappointed in a Tory backbencher whose comments on a blog seemed to mock women's rights and were deemed "sexist" by the opposition.

But he stopped short of formally sanctioning Doug Elniski. "I asked him to apologize," Stelmach told reporters on Tuesday after meeting with Elniski.

The MLA raised hackles with a blog posting that advised women to smile more and forget about that "equal stuff."

"I expressed to him how disappointed I was with his comments," Stelmach said, "how distracting it is to the good work that the government is doing in preparing this province for the future."

"They don't reflect my values, they don't reflect the values of our government, they don't reflect the values of the caucus nor of the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party."

Stelmach won't relieve Elniski of committee duties, saying the apology and the public embarrassment he has to endure are enough.

"There is a huge consequence to the member, obviously emotionally," said Stelmach.

"I'm sure Mr. Elniski, after living through this, has learned from it."

Meanwhile, an NDP representative is sending out the message that Albertans are "progressive, forward thinking" people -- and the controversial advice for girls posted in Elniski's blog doesn't reflect a widely-held view in the province.

NDP MLA Rachel Notley said Tuesday the comments were out of line and unacceptable to people across the province.

"Albertans are very progressive, forward-thinking people so I don't think Mr. Elniski represents the primary views of Albertans," she told CTV News Channel, one day after holding a news conference during which she slammed the blog posting.

"Most people are quite upset he would say such a thing so I don't think it's about it being acceptable in Alberta, I don't think it's acceptable anywhere."

The comments were posted on Elniski's personal blog, called "conservativeMLA." The blog and all its postings have since been taken down.

Notley took issue with a segment of a post Elniski wrote Saturday entitled "Grad speeches."

The blog posting was framed as advice for girls, and read: "Ladies, always smile when you walk into a room, there is nothing a man wants less than a woman scowling because he thinks he is going to get shit for something and has no idea what.

"Men are attracted to smiles, so smile, don't give me that 'treated equal' stuff, if you want equal it comes in little packages at Starbucks," the post read, referring to the artificial sweetener available at coffee shops.

Notley said the comments fly in the face of the struggle for women's rights.

"It's a traditional way to undercut them and say 'oh you're just so angry, just be nice,' and particularly women are undercut that way. So he may not even realize how his comments contribute to sexism, but they do," she said.

Elniski said he didn't mean any offence. He said the comments were his own versions of material he heard somewhere once in a standup comedy routine.

"I apologize. There was no malice intended by this. I have three very successful independent adult daughters and I, more than anyone, understand the issues that they deal with and the challenges they have," he said.

"If it was considered hurtful or if it was deemed inappropriate -- and when I look at it in black and white, I can see why it would be -- that's why I took the blog down today and I apologize for it. It shouldn't be there."

"In hindsight, it was a stupid, inappropriate thing to put on the blog," he said.

The MLA, who was elected to the legislature just last year, insisted he was not sexist.

"If I were sexist, I think I would certainly know about it by now."

Stelmach's office also announced Tuesday it was sending out reminder notes to members on the pitfalls of blogging and other social-networking sites.

"It's a new social media and, as evidenced by Mr. Elniski, these matters can really get away on you," said Stelmach.

It sounds like the Tory attack ads, that use things out of context to discredit people, are going to start putting everyone on the defensive. Politicians will soon not express any opinions. It will be like they are all federal Tories.

The comments were stupid and deserve rebuke from his party handlers, but this is hardly worthy of a press conference. It's unfortunate that you almost never see the NDP holding press conferences to forward their policy ideas, just for nonsense like this.

Take politically correct and stick it! This nitpicking is getting out of hand by opposition etc.I'm so sick of politically correct, that I'm being driven the other way. From now on I'm going to say it if it is politically in-correct, and hope to get a rise out of people. In my view, if you side with this ideology of politically correct, which has become a trademark of the NDP and Liberals, showing complete lack of common sense, you are consenting to be the biggest mushroom, and sissy possible, being told what to do at every turn. Stand up for yourselves for god sake, and resist politically correct and someone trying to turn you into a sissy wimp! Personally I don't care if I offend someone, from time to time, I stand behind what I believe in, not behind what others tell me I should.

Who really cares? Only the liberal minded media would make a story out of this, last time I checked they hadn't taken away the freedom of speech. There was nothing overtly sexist or anti homosexual in either of his comments? You know they are clutching at straws when this is "news". Don't waste our time. We are an over sensitive society!! By the way the only thing that makes us all equal... is that we are sinners that have come short of the glory of God! In that I would say we are equal!

Man o' man. Things are getting stupider by the day. Holding news conferences to rebuke something like this is certainly stretching the rubber band. Can't our politicians find something better to do with their time? This "gotcha" politics is pathetic.

Oh lets get real for the sake of everyone. Just because a GUY expresses himself in a blog doesn't make him a bad GUY. Everyone has a view, feeling or expectation. If we strip all that away.. we'll be drones walking about emotionless and dull. I like women in dresses.. not because I'm sexist but because the fashion industry has great talent and it looks better on women. Grow up people. express yourself and be real.

As a woman, I don't find the comments funny in the slightest. Maybe he should have checked with his PR team to see if he was actually getting his message across properly, rather than insulting half of Canada's population.

I'm far less worried about what this man said as I am that he has managed to move forward in society as far as he has already. Which may indicate that other politicians sympathize with his views or at least also suffer from a deplorable case of FOOT IN MOUTH disease!

And by the way, he sounds as though he is refering to someone in particular. I doubt he will be getting any smiles from young ladies in the near future, unless they are laughing at him! HA

Sounds funny to me. Give me a break and grow up people. Why don't we all sew our mouths shut so no one talks. Everyone says stupid stuff every day and we don't need a press confrence to aknoledge it. Get to serious issues people.

DUMB ALL AROUND

Dumb for an elected official to think that you can put a sexist comment on your blog and not be taken to task.

Dumb for an elected official from the Conservative camp to think that you can say ANYTHING close to the margin about the gay community. (Not your biggest fan base.)

Dumb for the gay community to object, in light of the fact that it often takes "pride" in parading "interesting" sexual characters and their antics.

Dumb for the media to think that this constitutes a legitimate front-page national news story.

...And I'm dumb for allowing my cereal to get soggy while I type this comment.

Please:
Can't anyone say anything anymore without offending someone. No more blond jokes, no more animal jokes etc. Maybe because I'm Italian I should go to human rights or the government and complain that the big whopper at bk is offensive to me, because it is a variation of wop. It must be great to be an ndp member as you are perfect. As Brad from Edm said show us some policy rather than find every conversation or joke offensive.

Thanks God I don't live in Alberta. I'll take the East Coast any day before I move to that province.

Coupled with the comments from the other Alberta MLA from last week and now this, could someone tell Alberta MLAs this is the 21st century, not the 18th Century.

It seems it doesn't take much to get 15 minutes of fame these days. There is no doubt the statements are inappropriate but spare me the national coverage for an Alberta MLA. Politicians and almost anybody nowadays pays for statements like that. They are really neanderthal in todays times but by pressing the issue really looks silly. I am sure his wife and daughters let him have it far worse than any NDP member.

Come on your radical right wingers. The guys remarks were sexist. It's not about being PC, Liberal or Socialist, it's about respect which MLA Doug Elniski seems to have little of. If you ask me Tory's should be ashamed of this guy.

Women need to learn to take these things in better humour. Every time something is written that could be interpreted as insulting to women, they go all up in arms and start shouting about 'equality'. You don't see men whining whenever they're insulted (it happens more often than you would think).

And yeah, I know women think I'm sexist now.

Women and men are NOT equal, they are different and fulfill different functions. They are designed to compliment each other.

Can a man have a baby? Can a woman lift a 200 pound log off a child?

We live in a world which has lost its boundaries and common sense. Hopefully in time when all this political correct "non sense" has run its course we will get back to a proper social equilibrium. Unfortunately I have doubts based on what I see around me that we will ever see that again.

I agree 100%

I made Alberta a place I will never visit.
If I had to drive through that province I'd tow a trailer with extra gas. I wouldn't stop or spend a dime in Alberta.
The conservative party seems more like a communist party that adopts liberal policies to stay in power.

C'mon...the scowling one was kind of funny. These could easily be jokes that my husband and I use with each other.

That being said, politicians have to hold themselves to a different standard, and jokes that single out anything opposite to themselves (sex, sexuality, ethnicity, etc) should not be said in public.

He'll learn.

Was this really National News worthy CTV?

If you don't like it then move to Iran where they muzzle freedom to speech to accommodate the few who try to impose THEIR values on the majority the way the "politically correct" tries here.

This is a common occurance for Con's to make thoughtless remarks and they are just that. They and some of the male posters on here seem to think that political figures with strong influence have no problem and should not be given a second thought.

I guess some may feel that words don't influence our young people !? If that were so then I guess more of our young would be more successful and not suicidal.

This politician needs to consider would he want his kids to have any less or think any less of themselves. And this is what goes for responsible politicians these days....pathetic

It's unfortunate that one of our political "leaders" is so out of touch with what’s politically correct (it’s his job to know right?). I'm not sensitive by any means, but come on, elected officials need to be sensitive to all of their constituents - and I don't think coaching women in what men find attractive is exactly what the public is looking for from our MLAs.

"You're not a stand-up comedian Doug, you're a politician. Know your role."

Did you know that it takes much less effort to smile than to frown? The comment makes it easier on everyone if we took the advice to mind our own business and try to make the next persons life more enjoyable. That seems to be a novelty in this selfish society we have created.
Try it smile at someone today and see if your own life doesn't improve!

In reading others' comments, I'm saddened to see that we still do not hold our elected officials to a higher standard. The remarks were indeed irresponsible. If you don't think they are, clearly you have not been affected by sexist overture. Why is it that so many of you are unwilling to recognize the suffering of others? Do you absolutely HAVE to have it happen to you in order to believe it exists?

I love watching the Conservative supporters get all wound up in defence of this. They are the ones firing off attack ads with no election going on, but are so desperately defending blatantly offensive public comments by an elected official. Regardless of your party, as an elected official you are under constant review, and must be aware of the potential impact of any comment you are going to verbalize, or write. This MLA's comments were offensive. There is nothing more to say about it...perhaps other than the fact that its yet another example of the lack of respect that ANY Conservative Party Member in Canada has for the Public that they are supposed to represent. The other parties arent great, but at least they dont slap us in the face with disrespect regularly.

Many males never grow up and are ignorant of women and that outside their own petty little modern male ego; they never gain the life experiences that develop a more wholistic character and perspective. Finding that problem in politics - not welcome but not a surprise. Correction is critical in politics; it takes more than an appology, and an appology, in it's manner of delivery may indicate how bad the problem is.

It is this narrow mindedness that still exists and the new generation thinks that it is OK.

What are the recommendations for "BOYS". A person in the public should know better.

I am teaching my boys to respect every person regardless of gender. I am also teaching them that anything that they post on the internet (blog, facebook, MSN etc) is there forever. You would think that a politician would know this. Should they take Political Correctness 101?

In case you people don't get it, freedom of speech doesn't mean people have to be silent when someone says something idiotic and sexist. Freedom means that he can say someting sexist, and I can call him sexist. If you want to say any stupid thing that comes into your head, that's fine, but don't expect others not to respond. THAT'S FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

A woman's smile is a beautiful thing. Even better than a man's smile. A gift from the Gods. It doesn't make anyone think she is unequal. A chip on a woman's shoulder is as off-putting as a chip on a man's shoulder. It gets either sex nowhere good. But say these things very carefully if you're a Conservative. The politically correct media police are listening for amunition against you to blow up into a national story of outrageous proportions, especially during elections.

I just watched Mona Lisa Smile on the weekend, and this comment goes straight back to the days of women going to college to learn how to become the perfect wife. If I don't feel like smiling, I'm not going to. Especially not just to please some uptight suit who doesn't deserve it. I'm behind Rachel Notley on this one.

And to the guy who said a woman couldn't life a 200 lb log, I'm sure it's been done. There are some STRONG women out there, and I'm sure they wouldn't be smiling right now either.

To paint Mr Elniski's comments as reflection of the status of Women in Alberta is absurd. Having worked in several provinces and territories in this country, I would say that Albertans are really no different than anyone else. yes the old boys network does still exist here, but look around people, it exists everywhere. Fortunately demographics are changing and the old boys are seen for what they really are: old and archaic. Mr. Elniski did what are prone politicians to do, act without thinking. Ms. Notley should top grandstanding and visit Alberta sometime! This would allow her to witness all the fine women and men working together powering this countries economic engine.

ok, i'm a early 30's, 4th generation, white canadian woman and i agree that a woman should smile when she enters the room! a smile can brighten the darkest day, it also gets them thinking about what is so funny!

as for the forget about equal comment, well, that is an old man comment that has more to do with the fact that no one is equal any more. we give all the equal rights away to every 'visible minority' group out there. you must respect all groups but who respects me?? all you out there who cry that this is politically uncorrect...phoo on you!
i challenge you to tell me who is treated equal anymore???

does your child get the teacher time he/she requires or does your child fall through a crack that was opened so that the 'challenged' boy who is chronologically 8 but mentally 5 but it would hurt his feelings to be held back in the grade that he belongs because he is equal?
how about that ad in the paper (i am talking the creston valley advance, june 11, 2009) in which the chamber of commerce said that "preference will be given to those with disabilities, aboriginals or visible minorities", who is getting treated equal there? right person for the job, anybody??? ever been passed over because the job has to appease a quota? are you a woman who is biased against because you out work men in your field of work?

fact is that we live in a world that is so far from equal that when one speaks up about it (given it was in poor taste and out of context) you are all so quick to jump on the person because it is the 'correct' thing to do.
