Perez Hilton is facing sharp criticism for using an anti-gay slur against Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am, after the gossip blogger alleged the rapper's manager "clocked" him in a Toronto club.

Hilton, who has presents himself as an advocate for gay rights, said he was approached by will.i.am at the downtown club Cobra after the Much Music Video Awards.

The rapper asked Hilton to stop being disrespectful to the band, to which Hilton said he called him "gay" and a "faggot."

"I knew it was going to set him off," Hilton later said in a video post.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a press release Monday, slamming Hilton for using the slur.

"These are vulgar anti-gay slurs that feed a climate of hatred and intolerance toward our community," said Rashad Robinson, senior director of media programs at GLAAD.

"For someone in our own community to use it to attack another person by saying that it is, quote, 'The worst possible thing that thug would ever want to hear,' is incredibly dangerous. It legitimizes use of a slur that is often linked to violence against our community. And it sends a message that it is OK to attempt to dehumanize people by exploiting anti-gay attitudes."

Hilton first made the allegations about being attacked on his Twitter feed, saying he was bleeding and in need of police assistance.

"Please come to the SoHo Metropolitan Hotel now. Please. ... I was assaulted by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding," Hilton alleged in a posting to his Twitter account, twitter.com/PerezHilton, around 3 a.m. ET.

He later alleged he had actually been attacked by will.i.am's manager, not the rapper.

Toronto police confirmed Monday morning that a man has been arrested and charged in the case.

Const. Tony Vella could not confirm the details of the incident, but said that Liborio Molina, a 36-year-old man from California, is facing one count of assault. He will appear in court on Aug. 5.

Vella could not confirm reports that Toronto police were flooded with calls from alarmed followers of Hilton, who eventually tweeted that, "The Toronto police are here now. Thank you. Please stop calling them."

Upon hearing of Hilton's allegations, will.i.am created a Twitter account of his own to deny Hilton's story. He alleged that a fan was the one who hit Hilton.

"I just made a twitter account because it isn't cool for someone to blame you and blast you with lies," he posted to twitter.com/iamtherealwill.

"He will go to any length to get press...wow...!!!!"

The rapper and activist then posted a video online, during which he recounted his version of events.

According to the rapper, Black Eyes Peas lead singer Fergie, who is often a target of Hilton's snarky blog posts, approached Hilton at an MMVA after-party at the club Ultra.

Fergie asked Hilton if he had a problem with her, to which he replied that he did not like the band's latest album.

Hilton then allegedly said something to hurt Fergie's feelings, which upset will.i.am.

A tired-looking Hilton, who appeared to have a small cut under his right eye, said it was not a fan that hit him.

"His manager, Polo, whom I have met before, from behind comes up to me, clocks me in the eye and punches me two or three times," Hilton said.

According to Hilton, a member of the band's entourage bumped into him during Saturday's rehearsal for the award show, at which he was a presenter.

Hilton said that Fergie did approach him the next day at Ultra and confirmed that he got into a verbal confrontation with will.i.am later at Cobra, where the rapper asked that Perez not write about the band.

Hilton told him that he couldn't promise but he would try to avoid writing about the group, and as the argument escalated Hilton said he did direct a derogatory term toward will.i.am.

Hilton then left the club, and it was while he was standing outside that he says he was attacked by Polo.

According to Hilton's Twitter feed, he will continue his work day as usual.

"I am NOT going to let this affect my work. And today will be a day like any other on the website."

Perez Hilton is the biggest Liberal going in the states. He is a hero to the gay community and Liberal fringe groups in the USA.
I was dissapointed but not surprised to see the people he was attacking.
I think he should apologize to the American black community.

Perez makes money, a lot of it, apparently, but drawing things on pictures. Some are gross. Make this bad man go away.
I read an article about him, a while ago. He spent his entire childhood as a fat kid, doing nothing but watching TV!! His parents let him do that. He's a special one, that's for sure.

I agree w/ all the comments.

Leave room for REAL news.

Hilton is an idiot who will do anything to garner media attention.

Tweeting about requiring the police is an obvious example of how much he DIDN'T need the police. Anyone who is really in need to assistance knows how to get help....even children know how to dial 9-1-1.

I absolutely hate how stupid society has become. These people are useless. Can't we report on more important topics?

Perez Hilton is a whiny gossip monger who doesn't have the talent it takes to get a real job in the entertainment industry, so he tries compensate and inflate his ego by attacking others, most of whom actually work hard in the industry. I think its remarkable that he hasn't gotten a thumping before this. I have no pity for this guy!

"I'm in shock. I need the police ASAP. Please come to the Soho Metropolitan Hotel now. Please," Hilton posted to his Twitter account, twitter.com/PerezHilton, around 3 a.m.

His next tweet said: "I was assaulted by Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke."
---------------------------

Um....want to be taken seriously, call 911... don't Twitter your emergency.

Seriously, on so many levels, grow up...

Hey Tyrone,

Perez isn't a "liberal", he's a highly successful capitalist who earns more in a day than you do in a year.

His niche in the business of entertainment is leveraging his celebrity and media attention into cash via his web site, which he does very successfully.

He's a millionaire, you're not.

Pardon me if I sound skeptical, but this appears to be nothing more then a publicity stunt. It takes a lot longer to use twitter then it does to dial 911. If he truly was concerned about his physical well-being and safety, he would have called the police himself. Don't be surprised to see him withdraw his complaint in a few days, once he's milked this for all it's worth.

Who is Perez Hilton and why is he being reported on? There are currently important news events in the world (global economy, Iran, Sri Lanka, North Korea, etc). CTV should not be wasting time and space on non-stories and non-entities.

If "Mario" used a derogatory term (a gay term)to Will I am and he wasn't gay then the press would be all over this . But because he is gay himself he'll probably get off easy .

Mario's 15 mins must be close to being up by now .

...and is so lost in obsession he has no idea to dail 911 in an emergency?

As much as being a millionaire would be nice, I'd rather have a clue in life... Hilton's arrogance reveals just how much of an idiot he really is...

well I'm certainly never reading his blog again. What kind of loser can't call the police himself? Our police have more important things to do than answer countless calls from twitter losers. Perez, you should apologize to the Toronto Police Force immediately and make a donation to a fund for REAL victims of violence in Canada.

Perez should be ashamed to have used such a hateful and hurtful word towards William. As a gay person, he should know the effects of that. Perez seems to use his gayness when it suits him and his ignorance when he's run out of clever things to say. As a gay person, he is far from being my hero. He isn't liberal, he's ignorant and pathetic that he thinks he represents anyone. He's a namby pamby nobody who likes attention any way he can get it. He is a nobody.

Well it's quite obvious that he got exactly what he was intending, to make it news. Now look at how it's getting him the attention he craves. People like him do not care who they take down and come on...Twitter to call the police!?! What a moron.

Why is this even making the news, much less the top stories? Let's see some more coverage of the economy and real news like Afghanistan, North Korea, Iran, etc. Someone else nailed it perfectly - this is fluff, and not terribly interesting fluff - more like navel lint.

this has been THE most bizarre piece of news lately.

let's look at it this way:

if he had went to the cops first, the amount of publicity generated for himself would have taken at least several hours...

but put it on twitter, update every three or so minutes. his followers will re-tweet it, followers of those followers not following perez hilton will have read the re-tweet, checked out perez hilton... and presto... 'publicity' in less than 30 mintues.

BUT WTF!?!? 911 is only 3-buttons. several tweets are more than 100 button presses. geeeez. foul playyy

I just sat through the entire video on perezhilton listening to him explain how he was attacked. Let me start of by agreeing with perez - violence is no good.

With that said - Perez has publicly humiliated people on his site for years - including children of celebrities. He is vicious and cruel. When you listen to him recount his version of what happened things went sideways when perez made the conscious decision to call will.i.am a f@ggot. He then claims that after he did so - he chose not to get into a fight with will.i.am. I don't understand how he would think escalating the situation with hate terms would resolve the situation. He fails to see his role in any of what happened and is now acting innocent and void of fault.

Perez - it was only a matter of time before someone was pushed to the edge. Maybe you should stop.

Come on people... Perez can't call 911 for himself. He's too big of a celebrity to do that. (Please note the sarcasm). If he was "supposedly" attacked, wasn't there anyone with him that would help him out? Probably not, he probably dissed all of his "friends".

I'm not a big fan of any "celebrity gossiper" including Perez Hilton.

However, Fergie approaching Perez because he writes things about her that she does not like is soooo childish.

Come on Fergie, GET OVER IT.

So many celebrities can't take the heat but always want to be in the spotlight as if they are on top of the world.

Fergie, good and bad press is part of being in the spotlight...deal with it like a grown up.

Why are so many people complaining that CTV is covering this story? If you look at the CTV website, this is not the only story that they are covering.

Why shouldn't this story get covered? This moron, Hilton, is a fool who influences a lot of people in a business in which many "ordinary" people follow. This is obviously a publicity stunt on his part and the public should see how ridiculous Hilton really is. C'mon, tweeting when you are being assaulted??? That is absurd until you realize that using twitter is a lot more visible than 911.

As a gay man I have to question why Perez things he has any right to call someone a "faggot". He said on his own website that he said this to get them angry... well it worked. It really bothers me when people say hes a "hero to the gay community"... To me, he is everything that is wrong with the gay community.

We, society, are the true problem. The sad thing that NONE of us have learned anything. We are more concerned on who is dating who, who is having kids by whom; rather than the REAL problem.
We as humans cannot even get along! Kids are dieing, not receiving proper education.
But what do we as society want? More celebrity news. None of these entertainment shows, bloggs, websites, or magazines would not be thriving unless society buys and feeds into it.
We should ALL be ashamed!
But as long as we care who Paris Hilton is with, when Brittany's next melt down will be, or which football start is caught with drugs; we are not evolving positively as a society or as a species.

Just think about it.......
