A new political landscape has emerged in Nova Scotia, and it's awash in NDP orange.
The New Democrats, led by Darrell Dexter, won Atlantic Canada's first-ever NDP majority on Tuesday night.
The NDP won 31 out of 52 seats in the legislature, well above the 27-seat threshold required for a majority.
Dexter, 51, is now set to become the next premier of Nova Scotia. The former lawyer and journalist was confident in victory.
"I am humbled by the trust that so many Nova Scotians have placed in the NDP," Dexter said, addressing his supporters. "Nova Scotians made an historic choice today. I take the NDP's new responsibilities very seriously."
And he spoke directly to the people of the province: "The seats of the legislature belong to the people, and our loyalty is to you, the people of this province," he said, "and our goal is to make sure the decision you made today will prove to be a positive choice for Nova Scotia."
Dexter said Nova Scotians had given his NDP team a mandate and he would "use that mandate with due caution and with great enthusiasm about the future of this province."
Dexter easily won his riding in Cole Harbour.
MacDonald thanks Nova Scotians
Outgoing PC Premier Rodney MacDonald won in Inverness, and Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil took his riding of Annapolis.
MacDonald -- whose party slipped to third place with 10 seats -- was gracious in defeat, saying in his concession speech "the people have spoken." He said he called and congratulated Dexter, and told him he would "do everything to ensure a smooth transition."
"Nova Scotians have decided to go in another direction," MacDonald said, "they have said it is time for change. While it's not an easy decision to accept, it is a decision I respect"
To people of the province MacDonald said, "thanks for a great ride as Premier of Nova Scotia."
McNeil of the Liberals, who won 11 seats and official opposition status, said he was "humbled" by the support his party received, and vowed to be a "strong voice in the legislature."
With the New Democrats leading in opinion surveys for more than two years, the province's 700,000 voters were ready to turn their backs on 10 years of Tory rule and make history by electing the first NDP government east of Ontario.
The province's sagging economy dominated as the main issue of the 35-day campaign, which began as a tranquil, springtime distraction but soon devolved into a mudslinging match marked by accusations that the NDP had knowingly accepted questionable campaign contributions from a group of trade unions.
The ruling Conservatives, led by the 37-year-old MacDonald, spent much of the race in attack mode, repeatedly warning voters about the perils of voting for the "risky NDP."
Late in the race, the premier from Cape Breton went so far as to liken Dexter to a car thief.
As well, the Conservatives produced a radio ad that criticized the NDP for accepting $45,000 in questionable union donations.
McNeil, contesting his first election as party leader, devoted much of his time to courting the small business sector, which supports about half of the province's entire workforce.
The former appliance repairman from the Annapolis Valley had promised to run a positive, upbeat campaign. But McNeil also seized on the NDP's troubles in the final days, accusing the party of failing to reveal everything it knew about how the union donations were handled.
At dissolution, the Tories held 21 seats in the 52-seat legislature, the NDP had 20 and the Liberals nine. There was one vacancy and one Independent.
The province has had a lingering infatuation with minority governments, having elected three of them in the past four elections.
Going into the campaign, the Conservatives held the majority of their seats on the rural mainland, the NDP was sure to keep its solid base in Halifax and the Liberals were counting on retaining their stronghold in Cape Breton.
MacDonald, a former gym teacher and professional fiddler, took the reins of the Tory party in early 2006 and called an election that summer.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

I hope the win empowers the other provinces to be bold, select a party that will work for you. As a person who grew up in New Brunswick, I know that we have a caring, cooperative nature, I hope this is represented in voting as well as living, like Nova Scotia did today. Cheers!

So whether it was a mistke or not, we'll see. However one thing I can promise Nova Scotians under a NDP government is huge government spending, higher taxes, higher gas prices, higher unemployment, but they will have a wonderful welfare system and everyone will have to love everyone equally, because the NDP will make it the law.
Ok, so they made a mistake.

Any of the stupid NDP supporters on this board, try responding to the charges that not one province that ever elected you has even done anything but suffer.
It might have been time for a change but NS'ers what have you done - you'll be sorry before you know it. Sad, really sad.

In my experience so far, the Liberals lie to us and take our money, the Conservatives lie to us and take our money, and now the NDP wants a chance at it.
If all the political parties are incompetent and are no good, then really, what are we to do?

I'm not in a union, and my company is owned by a huge multinational that was already looking at the tax rates in this province and shaking its head, wondering why it was staying here when 90% of its business was in the US.
Hmmmm....might be time to apply for that Green Card after all.
All joking aside, I hope like hell I have to eat my words 4 years from and vote gleefully for another NDP government, but I'll tell ya, the track record to date does nothing to make me confident.
But the people have spoken and it was a good turn out, so it does reflect the will of my fellow Nova Scotian's... lets just hope were not the bunch of brain dead East Coasters so many think we are....Oi.

You are right on about the Swedes. Finland, and its government run oil industry,is even a better example of what can be accomplished when government looks after its people instead of the well connected. It is a disgrace how so few have and are reaping all the benefits from Canadian natural resources.
One thing though it is not socialism no matter how often the peddlers of unbridled capitalism say so.They believe that if you repeat something often enough it becomes the truth.Sadly for many it does.
Congrats Nova Scotia for taking a chance. The 2 major parties have become clones who serve corporate Canada not the population.

The problem with both of the replacements is that their politics are obsolete - market economics has left them in the dust. So, four years or so from now the NDP will be ousted in a landslide.
The only two uncertainties are:
1. How much damage can the NDs do to a province in four years that is already a basket-case?
2. What kind of party and leader will replace them; A new canada party like the Sask party, or a retread of the liberal/PC axis and a contuation in the old canada rut?

By the way it was the NDP that dug Sask and Manitoba out of debt and the Ontario NDP that set the stage for the economic recovery Harris took credit for after being knee capped by the Chretien government. Do a little bit of research before you shoot your mouth off.

Deferring for a year, two, or twenty won't make a lick of difference - you're going to pay...and pay huge.
Let's never forget, the NDP are the kings (and queens) of theft and fraud, so kindly remember to put aside a dozen million or so for the inquiries which are sure to follow.
Oh, and give your kids an extra tight hug tonight...God bless 'em - they have NO IDEA what they're in for.

Dexter's smartest move during this campaign was by not inviting any of the radicals like "Taliban Jack" or any of his ilk for Ottawa the way MacNeil did. That probably what helped to sink his party: Rae, Iggy, and the hockey player??, What was he thinking!! Anyway, we in NS will know before too long whether we made the right decision or not. Hang on folks its going to get very turbulent very shortly!!Cheers from the heart of. Annapolis Valley.

So do you all Think it can be bad?
Think Back to the John Buchanan days.
I'm 24 and I will be paying for that mistake for the rest of my years. And so will my children.
How can you bash the NDP when it is the first time they have won an election in Nova Scotia.
Just think about this. We have voted for the other parties and how was it working for us. It's not. How can a government spend money, lower taxes and not go further in debt. I seriously hope they raise taxes, if they don't we will never get this province out of debt.
Steve Murphy asked an amazing question to Stephen McNeil, "Mr McNeil you are saying your going to spend half a billion dollars, your going to lower taxes where do you plan to get this money from when you don't know how bad the books are". Mr Stephen McNeil's face turned red and he was speechless.
Like come on, that's is what is truly scary.

But frankly I can't say I blame the people of Nova Scotia. They really didn't have a lot of choice. The PC had gotten lazy after 10 years in power and had no real vision to present to Nova Scotia but more of the same.
The Liberals have been as discredited as the PC over time.
Honestly I think political parties who are in power for a long time need to look at the Alberta PC party, they know how to play perpetual majorities to their advantage. Its not an easy task.

However on a happier note I do hope that the "change" everyone wants is successful. Can Mr. Dexter bring another look to the otherwise terrible boys in orange? Or will it be the same old thing; the same old mantra? Time will tell. If he starts by bashing the last government for everything then you know that it's the same old thing just a different coloured jacket.
When BC went NDP companies bailed right, left and centre and it was a long time before they returned. Keep that in mind. We won't even go onto the Ontario problems as a result of Mr. Rae.

Ya Sweden may have high GDP per capita, but believe me they need it. Their Tax rate is over 60%. Besides unlike
Sweden, Nova Scotia doesn't have a thriving oil industry or manufacturing base like Sweden does to support the spending.
You are now governed by a government beholden to a bunch of union hacks. Hang onto your seat and watch for tax increases and reduced services everywhere, while the government spends more to tender contracts only to Union companies.
Your pal Cam is right,
the gap between rich & poor in Sweden & Finland is smaller, because thanks to socialism everyone is poorer.
We've seen this movie before, the theatre doesn't change the plot or the ending.

Second, Bob Rae is and always has been a Liberal, who betrayed the truly NDP members of his caucus.
Third, NDP governments have always been the most fiscally responsible of all governments (those who care can look it up). Where have the federal Tories gotten us, after all? Billions of dollars in debt with nothing to show for it.
I celebrate this election. Nova Scotia has come to its senses.

We had a couple of strong NDP Leaders. Strong doesn't = smart. They led us right into the abyss.
Hey come to think of it, Nova Scotia is an Island. Want to buy a few ferries? Designed to NDP Spec's, project managed by NDP hacks and Union built. We're not using them and they would fit in real good. They've written off the 1/2 billion cost to us taxpayers so you can get 'em real cheap.
This could be our gift to you, from one former NDP administration to another.
