A new political landscape has emerged in Nova Scotia, and it's awash in NDP orange.

The New Democrats, led by Darrell Dexter, won Atlantic Canada's first-ever NDP majority on Tuesday night.

The NDP won 31 out of 52 seats in the legislature, well above the 27-seat threshold required for a majority.

Dexter, 51, is now set to become the next premier of Nova Scotia. The former lawyer and journalist was confident in victory.

"I am humbled by the trust that so many Nova Scotians have placed in the NDP," Dexter said, addressing his supporters. "Nova Scotians made an historic choice today. I take the NDP's new responsibilities very seriously."

And he spoke directly to the people of the province: "The seats of the legislature belong to the people, and our loyalty is to you, the people of this province," he said, "and our goal is to make sure the decision you made today will prove to be a positive choice for Nova Scotia."

Dexter said Nova Scotians had given his NDP team a mandate and he would "use that mandate with due caution and with great enthusiasm about the future of this province."

Dexter easily won his riding in Cole Harbour.

MacDonald thanks Nova Scotians

Outgoing PC Premier Rodney MacDonald won in Inverness, and Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil took his riding of Annapolis.

MacDonald -- whose party slipped to third place with 10 seats -- was gracious in defeat, saying in his concession speech "the people have spoken." He said he called and congratulated Dexter, and told him he would "do everything to ensure a smooth transition."

"Nova Scotians have decided to go in another direction," MacDonald said, "they have said it is time for change. While it's not an easy decision to accept, it is a decision I respect"

To people of the province MacDonald said, "thanks for a great ride as Premier of Nova Scotia."

McNeil of the Liberals, who won 11 seats and official opposition status, said he was "humbled" by the support his party received, and vowed to be a "strong voice in the legislature."

With the New Democrats leading in opinion surveys for more than two years, the province's 700,000 voters were ready to turn their backs on 10 years of Tory rule and make history by electing the first NDP government east of Ontario.

The province's sagging economy dominated as the main issue of the 35-day campaign, which began as a tranquil, springtime distraction but soon devolved into a mudslinging match marked by accusations that the NDP had knowingly accepted questionable campaign contributions from a group of trade unions.

The ruling Conservatives, led by the 37-year-old MacDonald, spent much of the race in attack mode, repeatedly warning voters about the perils of voting for the "risky NDP."

Late in the race, the premier from Cape Breton went so far as to liken Dexter to a car thief.

As well, the Conservatives produced a radio ad that criticized the NDP for accepting $45,000 in questionable union donations.

McNeil, contesting his first election as party leader, devoted much of his time to courting the small business sector, which supports about half of the province's entire workforce.

The former appliance repairman from the Annapolis Valley had promised to run a positive, upbeat campaign. But McNeil also seized on the NDP's troubles in the final days, accusing the party of failing to reveal everything it knew about how the union donations were handled.

At dissolution, the Tories held 21 seats in the 52-seat legislature, the NDP had 20 and the Liberals nine. There was one vacancy and one Independent.

The province has had a lingering infatuation with minority governments, having elected three of them in the past four elections.

Going into the campaign, the Conservatives held the majority of their seats on the rural mainland, the NDP was sure to keep its solid base in Halifax and the Liberals were counting on retaining their stronghold in Cape Breton.

MacDonald, a former gym teacher and professional fiddler, took the reins of the Tory party in early 2006 and called an election that summer.

Jay, you know nothing, if you think NS made a mistake....We need a change in this province. We need to get away from the lying decietful PC's and get someone who cares about the people of the province. No politician in recent times has had the people of the province on he top of their list. They were more concerned with furthering their careers@....

Yes I see that the NDP candidate in my riding is leading. Well higher taxes here we come in an area/province that needs lower taxes. Perhaps it is time to move? Those in NS remember the Bob Rae days, lots of jobs and lots of taxes. Jay, Prof. Pye Chartt and George in Calgary are right on. A change might be needed KMD but this is not the way to do it. A have not province just slid down the ladder into have have not land.

But then again Dexter has promised folks that they can stay in NS and get work. Maybe I will give him a call, might as get some of my taxes back. But to George in Calgary; You folks keep working because we will need even more of your hard earned petro dollars! Yes the "Alberta Advantage"!

I hope they don't make me regret my decision.

There isn't one province where the NDP have been in power where the economic situation did not get worse, credit rating went down, it got a lot harder for business to operate, etc.

People have to realise that the only place for the NDP is in a reasonably strong opposition. That's where they have been effective.

This is a great day. It shows that Nova Scotia as well as Canada does not have a two party system. You don't have to vote for just the Liberals or just the Tories. You can actually select a party that puts people first.

I hope the win empowers the other provinces to be bold, select a party that will work for you. As a person who grew up in New Brunswick, I know that we have a caring, cooperative nature, I hope this is represented in voting as well as living, like Nova Scotia did today. Cheers!

You know, Nova Scotians had to make a change, obviously. But who else did they have to vote for? The Fiberals? The liars and crooks of the PC's? The only other option was the NDP.

So whether it was a mistke or not, we'll see. However one thing I can promise Nova Scotians under a NDP government is huge government spending, higher taxes, higher gas prices, higher unemployment, but they will have a wonderful welfare system and everyone will have to love everyone equally, because the NDP will make it the law.

Ok, so they made a mistake.

As a former Nova Scotian, I remembered the NDP to be always a fringe political party back in the 70's, getting only two to three seats in any given provincial election.

The seats usually came from Cape Breton Centre when Paul MacEwan ran the show for the New Democrat Party in NS.

Welcome to the wacky-world of politics on the East Coast!

Gail Tricebock, Nova Scotian

I believe that the NDP Party may be the agent of change to re-open a dialogue with the people. PC and Liberal Governments at both Provincial and Federal levels across Canada have been distancing themselves from individual families with the increasingly arrogant attitude that they know what's best for themselves as political party members and by extension they know what's best for their constituents -- no need for them to consult with the people they were elected to represent. NDP, I believe, in contrast is a party that listens to the people for direction. I appreciate their trust in our judgment. They have my best wishes and full support on the rocky road ahead of us all.

It looks like the rest of Canada doesn't like the Idea of the NDP being in charge here in NS....I say give them a chance... if they mess up... toss them in 4 years and elect either the crooks or the lairs...Just cause some other provinces had the NDP in charge and it went south doesn't mean this one will.. but if it does then it shouldn't come as much of a shock then. We are taught that we shouldn't brush one group of ppl with the same brush...so why do that with government? If they do mess up then it's lesson learned for us here in NS.

I moved to Alberta approx. 9 months ago. I rarely hear of politics here, simply because everyone is too busy enjoying graceful life. In NS, its not quite like that. No high paying jobs, schools are over crowded, and you need to know someone to get an "in" anywhere.

In my experience so far, the Liberals lie to us and take our money, the Conservatives lie to us and take our money, and now the NDP wants a chance at it.

If all the political parties are incompetent and are no good, then really, what are we to do?

Hmmmm....might be time to apply for that Green Card after all.

All joking aside, I hope like hell I have to eat my words 4 years from and vote gleefully for another NDP government, but I'll tell ya, the track record to date does nothing to make me confident.

But the people have spoken and it was a good turn out, so it does reflect the will of my fellow Nova Scotian's... lets just hope were not the bunch of brain dead East Coasters so many think we are....Oi.

I can't believe that the Nova Scotians wanted a Socialist government. Having lived in Manitoba, BC, & Sask under NDP governments you can kiss your savings goodbye. When we moved to BC from Alberta when the NDP were in power, all my kids savings for their education had to go for Government run Car Insurance, cost of living, taxes, etc. Car insurance in BC was 4x as much as we were paying in Alberta. My son had to work 2 jobs from the age of 16 to save for his University education. In Sask under the NDP you could not get private businesses to come in as the NDP government wanted control. Taxes on our home in Sask was close to $5000. Guess what, since the SASK Party came into power Sask is now a have province because businesses are falling all over each other to get in. We also lived in NS for a while and it was a beautiful province. So to all my friends who still live in NS, I hope you don't come to regret your decision and I wish you the best of luck!!

One thing though it is not socialism no matter how often the peddlers of unbridled capitalism say so.They believe that if you repeat something often enough it becomes the truth.Sadly for many it does.
Congrats Nova Scotia for taking a chance. The 2 major parties have become clones who serve corporate Canada not the population.

Nova scotia is part of the old, decrepit canada - the canada that is roughly east of the Ottawa river and the tired, old boy liberal, PC axis has finally failed and lost to the socialist/marxist NDP - Much as the GOP in the US lost to the Socialist Obama.

The problem with both of the replacements is that their politics are obsolete - market economics has left them in the dust. So, four years or so from now the NDP will be ousted in a landslide.

The only two uncertainties are:

1. How much damage can the NDs do to a province in four years that is already a basket-case?

2. What kind of party and leader will replace them; A new canada party like the Sask party, or a retread of the liberal/PC axis and a contuation in the old canada rut?

By the way it was the NDP that dug Sask and Manitoba out of debt and the Ontario NDP that set the stage for the economic recovery Harris took credit for after being knee capped by the Chretien government. Do a little bit of research before you shoot your mouth off.

However, it didn't take Macdonald long to disappoint and regret my voting for him. Since taking officer he has done absolutely nothing for this province and I for one say "GOOD RIDANCE" to him.

Dexter's smartest move during this campaign was by not inviting any of the radicals like "Taliban Jack" or any of his ilk for Ottawa the way MacNeil did. That probably what helped to sink his party: Rae, Iggy, and the hockey player??, What was he thinking!! Anyway, we in NS will know before too long whether we made the right decision or not. How can you bash the NDP when it is the first time they have won an election in Nova Scotia.

Just think about this. We have voted for the other parties and how was it working for us. It's not. How can a government spend money, lower taxes and not go further in debt. I seriously hope they raise taxes, if they don't we will never get this province out of debt.

Steve Murphy asked an amazing question to Stephen McNeil, "Mr McNeil you are saying your going to spend half a billion dollars, your going to lower taxes where do you plan to get this money from when you don't know how bad the books are". Mr Stephen McNeil's face turned red and he was speechless.

Well Done Darrell. For those critics I don't know what you would do without Bob Rae.
Given some of the political history of liberal and tory governments in this country we know where we've been and look forward to where we are going. It surely can't be any worse.
What a great day for democracy. It is a wonderful feeling to have people try something new. A very proud Nova Scotian.

The NDP have bankrupted or destroyed BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario. I guess Nova Scotia is next.

But frankly I can't say I blame the people of Nova Scotia. They really didn't have a lot of choice. The PC had gotten lazy after 10 years in power and had no real vision to present to Nova Scotia but more of the same.

The Liberals have been as discredited as the PC over time.

Honestly I think political parties who are in power for a long time need to look at the Alberta PC party, they know how to play perpetual majorities to their advantage. Its not an easy task.

As a lifelong tory I welcome the change. The pc's have been in power here for the last 10 years and 27 of the last 40. Our debt 10 years ago was 9,000,000,000 now it is 12,300,000,000. Our provincial tax rate is the highest in Canada. Tuition is the highest or very close to it. Our rural hospital emergency rooms have been closed for over 9,000 hours this year. The roads are deplorable, our provincial gas tax that is supposed to pay for these roads is nearly the highest in Canada. Gas regulation hasn't worked. Our fishery is in tatters as is our forestry. The few farms we have left are rapidly disappearing. Tourism?? The only out of province plates you see are from Alberta, driven by young folks who are laid off or on holiday. I don't really see how things can get much worse and good luck to our new direction.

To NS Paul in AB: Yes do move back but there will be no advantage there once taxes go up even more to pay for all the "freebies". Just wait and you will see that the "Alberta Advantage" will be there because it will be the petro dollars that Dexter will be screaming for in equalization.

However on a happier note I do hope that the "change" everyone wants is successful. Can Mr. Dexter bring another look to the otherwise terrible boys in orange? Or will it be the same old thing; the same old mantra? Time will tell. If he starts by bashing the last government for everything then you know that it's the same old thing just a different coloured jacket.

When BC went NDP companies bailed right, left and centre and it was a long time before they returned. Keep that in mind. We won't even go onto the Ontario problems as a result of Mr. Rae.

I can't help but laugh at so many of the comments on here from Western Canadians warning us about our newly elected NDP government. Thanks for the advice, but until you read more about the past few years in NS please don't tell us we've made a bad choice.

I'm a little concerned about the majority government. It's been a while since it hasn't been a minority...but a change could be good for us. It's time to give someone else a chance. Good luck Mr Dexter!

I agree with Chris in Kingston. Ontario was sorely messed up under Bob Rae and the NDP. Good Luck NS, you are going to need it.

@Pyke NS

Ya Sweden may have high GDP per capita, but believe me they need it. Their Tax rate is over 60%. Besides unlike
Sweden, Nova Scotia doesn't have a thriving oil industry or manufacturing base like Sweden does to support the spending.

You are now governed by a government beholden to a bunch of union hacks. Hang onto your seat and watch for tax increases and reduced services everywhere, while the government spends more to tender contracts only to Union companies.

Your pal Cam is right,
the gap between rich & poor in Sweden & Finland is smaller, because thanks to socialism everyone is poorer.

We've seen this movie before, the theatre doesn't change the plot or the ending.

First of all, the NDP government in Ontario in the '90s was the unfortunate recipient of a recession and a Liberal debt from David Peterson (just as the Liberals right now are squandering our tax dollars on paying off big bonuses to e-Health Ontario self-entitled and unmonitored CEO's. So much for responsible government.

Second, Bob Rae is and always has been a Liberal, who betrayed the truly NDP members of his caucus.

Third, NDP governments have always been the most fiscally responsible of all governments (those who care can look it up). Where have the federal Tories gotten us, after all? Billions of dollars in debt with nothing to show for it.

I celebrate this election. Nova Scotia has come to its senses.

My guess is that the small amount of entrepreneurs in NS willing to take a risk will be fleeing in droves. The province is now closed for business unless you work for the govt or a union. Its a sad day for freedom and democracy on the East Coast.

Bob Rae and the NDP screwed over Ontario during their 5 yr rein in the late 1980's early 1990's. They increased the deficit at least a minimum of 10-15 billion each yr in office. Enjoy tax hikes, unpaid days off, and a huge deficit each and every yr they are in office.

OK Boys and Girls listen up we made the biggest mistake of our lives. It's too bad the NDP received a majority government. Now we have to wait for 4-5 years before we get out this yoke.

I'm sorry that such a great place as Nova Scotia is going to have to learn to feel the pain that is an NDP government. I guess you can only learn from your own mistakes, not those of other provinces.

Give me a break. Let the NDP have a chance to rule...so what we keep the PC's in because we're so afraid of someone new. Let them try and if it doesn't work out in a few years vote them out.
No party is better then the other. PC's have had their time and they weren't great.
Let the NDP have their chance maybe they'll surprise all of us.

To all the small business owners in N.S., head for N.B.! While N.B. is lowering taxes for small business, you can be sure your new NDP government is gonna "jack" 'em way up!!!

@ A.C Berribger

Jealous?????!! Nah you're way off there buddy.

We had a couple of strong NDP Leaders. Strong doesn't = smart. They led us right into the abyss.

Hey come to think of it, Nova Scotia is an Island. Want to buy a few ferries? Designed to NDP Spec's, project managed by NDP hacks and Union built. We're not using them and they would fit in real good. They've written off the 1/2 billion cost to us taxpayers so you can get 'em real cheap.

This could be our gift to you, from one former NDP administration to another.

Chrisin Kingston and Peter in Kingsburg - you guys must have short memories. The Mike Harris government along with Jim Flaherty, John Baird and Tony Clement were the worst. They closed hospītals throughout the province of Ontario, fired 12,000 nurses, massacred the Education system in the province, fired envitronmental staff and last but not least, left the province with a $5.6 billion deficit. Great job Conservatives!

WOW - NS is about to get hit by the perfect storm. Just as things are about to get ugly with inflation knocking on the door (interest rates are going up... hang on!) the NDP gets in in NS. What you might have had to pay for next winter's heat will go to fund 'essential' programs. Hope you guy have lots of sweaters...

SAD day when a candidate can be elected (Bedford) and when asked what their qualifications are for doing the job they say I am married to a Federal Politician. The NDP have "gone to bed" with the unions and God help us all when the negotiations start

I used to vote liberal or conservative & never would I vote NDP.
After watching Harper's government display of total incompetance, I would consider looking at the NDP platform.
I would never consider conservative ever again.

So congratulations!!!
