In two years Ryan Reynolds has made five movies, played two superheroes and married Hollywood hottie Scarlett Johansson. Now the Vancouver-born star serves up some light-hearted fare in the new Sandra Bullock romcom, "The Proposal."
Directed by Anne Fletcher, this breezy comedy tells the tale of Margaret Tate (Bullock), a pain-in the-ass editor-in-chief of a publishing company, and her long-suffering assistant Andrew Paxton (Reynolds).
A Canadian by birth, Margaret's visa status in the United States comes under the scrutiny of immigration officials at the film's outset.
Desperate to remain in the U.S., Margaret forces Andrew to marry her, dangling the promise of a long-overdue promotion before him if he co-operates.
Their quickie engagement sparks an official investigation. The unlikely paramours have no other choice but to flee to Andrew's family estate in Alaska and sell the lie.
"It's a bit of a blackmail scheme," Reynolds told Canada AM today. "We both kind of get something out of it. She's about to be deported back to Canada. And I'd like to be promoted. I've earned it."
Viewing the flick as an ode to the downtrodden Hollywood assistant, Reynolds knew from personal experience that "The Proposal" hit just the right nerve.
"I've had friends who are assistants. I've sometimes heard my agent, thinking that he hit the hold button on his phone, go off and verbally assault his assistant. It's a tough job to have," says the 32-year-old Hollywood hunk.
As for the intolerable Tate, who sparks text messages like "She's back on her broom" when she enters the office, Reynolds says, "Sandra nails it perfectly. She's a skin-covered sledgehammer."
Shot in Massachusetts, "The Proposal" plays out in Andrew's stunning, Kennedy-esque mansion perched above a verdant private compound.
"The Proposal's" other memorable scenery comes with the sight of a naked Bullock and Reynolds colliding into one another in one crazy scene.
"I often refer to it as Cirque du Soleil porn," laughs Reynolds, a friend of Bullock's for the past nine years.
"It's a very bizarre thing when you're shooting a film with your buddy...Then we're suddenly colliding into one another wearing nothing but deodorant," says Reynolds.
After the first screen take, Reynolds says, "We laughed for about four minutes to get it out of our system. By the afternoon it was all pretty rote."
It's a movie moment that certainly won't disappoint Reynold's diehard fans. "When I was shooting this movie I was training for a marathon," says Reynolds. "It kind of tied in to being naked on screen."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
