TORONTO Former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both pleaded ignorance at a Toronto event over their country's new rule that will require Canadians and Americans to have passports to cross the border starting Monday.
The Friday afternoon event, which put Clinton and Bush on stage together for the first time, was "billed" as a conversation and the pair touched on Afghanistan, same-sex marriage and several other hot topic issues.
But when moderator Frank McKenna, the former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., launched into a passionate speech about how Canadians feel about the new passport rules, Bush and Clinton both seemed perplexed.
"Hell of a speech," Bush joked, before saying. "I'll be frank with you Frank, I don't know about the passport issue."
"I thought we were making good progress on using a driver's licence to cross the border. What happened to the easy-pass card?"
"I think we should be facilitating driving."
Clinton also demurred, saying he only heard of the subject a day before. He said most Americans probably didn't know about the issue.
This could mean fewer Americans coming into Canada, as less than half of Americans have passports, and could be harmful to Canada's economy, he said.
"I promise you, you have got my attention with this, so I'm going back home (and) I'll see if there is anything else I can do," he added.
Former rivals play nice
Clinton said that those in attendance at a debate between himself and his successor were "hoping for a 21st century version of the Roman Coliseum where we attempt to devour each other."
But instead, the pair of former presidents played like a pair of kittens.
For the 6,000 or so in attendance in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, there were remarkably little fireworks from a pair that seem to be polar opposites, both politically and personally.
The pair, seemingly free from the political responsibility to be rivals, complimented each other often, and even consoled the other on tough decisions they made while in office.
Bush even went so far as to refer to Clinton as "his brother" during his opening remarks. He explained that because Clinton has become so close to his father, ex-president George H.W. Bush, in their humanitarian work, his mother refers to Clinton as "her son."
But during the 60-minute debate there was one notable exception of contention.
Speaking about U.S. President Barack Obama, Bush said "Anything I say is not to be critical of my successor."
"I didn't appreciate it when my predecessor criticized me (in public,)" he added, which drew an annoyed look from Clinton.
Clinton responded: "I tried to do it in a very respectful way."
Clinton added that because his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was a Senator during Bush's presidency, there was additional pressure for him to be political.
While it was a mostly-Toronto crowd, and thus, Clinton received the bigger cheers of the afternoon from a liberal city, Bush was greeted very warmly and was cheered after a number of statements.
Both men pandered to their Canadian hosts. Clinton said "America has never had a better ally" and thanked Canada for its contribution in Afghanistan.
Bush spoke about the importance of free-trade between the U.S. and Canada, which drew one of the loudest cheers of the event.
However, outside was a different story, as hundreds of protesters gathered outside to denounce the presidents as "war criminals."
"Jail George Bush," some chanted, while others cheered "George Bush out, war resisters in."
A number of demonstrators also had signs calling for the release of Canadian Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay.
Bush on retirement
Unlike his vice-president, Dick Cheney, Bush has maintained a low profile since leaving the White House in January.
In his opening remarks, he seemed relaxed and joked about adjusting to post-presidential life.
"(Dishes) are my new domestic policy," he said his wife, Laura Bush, tells him.
Bush also told an amusing anecdote about his first walk around his new neighbourhood in Dallas with his dog, Barney.
Needless to say the story ended with the former leader of the free world, holding a plastic bag of his hand, picking up his dog's dirty business.
Regardless, "I like being in Texas. I don't miss the spotlight," he said. "Retirement is not that bad."
The controversial president, who invaded Iraq and presided over the U.S. economic meltdown, said he is writing a book that will challenge some of the beliefs about his decisions.
"History can change pretty quickly," he said. He has often contended that his decisions, particularly the invasion of Iraq, will be seen differently in the future.
While he did not outline any plans, Bush said he does "want to stay engaged with the world."
Clinton, an old pro on the speaking circuit, did not disappoint, starting out like a stand-up comedian with rapid-fire jokes, before ending on a rousing sermon on the importance of civil service.
He spoke at-length about his post-presidency humanitarian work, and almost sounded like his vice-president, Al Gore, when he made a passionate appeal on the environment.
"Global warming is going to be calamitous," he warned.
"You can do something about it. You don't need to be an ex-president of millionaire," he appealed. "You can do something about it."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Bush is now ranked below Carter and about the same as Nixon.

A fairly non-partisan comment, but aside from the work he did on AIDS, what exactly did Mr. Bush do that will cause him to be remembered fondly?
He destroyed the American economy, with the help of Phil Gramm, by passing the American Dream Down Payment Assistance Act which, along with the gutting of the Glass-Segal legislation which had protected American consumers since the 1930's, allowed the subprime mortgage debacle.
He helped kill the electric car, and refused to let Schwartzeneger enact mileage requirements that would have cleaned up the air in California and lowered CO2. He responded by giving tax breaks to companies that bought Hummers.
He conned the American people into fighting in Iraq. It has cost them over $500,000,000,000, and five thousand American lives. Never mind the innocent thousands of Iraqis killed.
He stripped civil liberties from the American Constitution under the Patriot Act. Ironically, right-wingers, some of whom still support Bush, also complain about how "left-wing socialists" are trying to take their rights away. Amazing.
He violated the Geneva convention through the use of torture, lowering America's moral stature in the world.
Arguably, he has undermined American financial stability, help exacerbate the climate change problem, wasted American and Iraq lives, lowered America's reputation in the world, and undermined civil liberties at home.
So what did he do that will be remembered fondly?

Thanks to Clinton, Bush was forced into becoming a war president. He basically went blind into the job as war president.
And thanks to the changes Bush and Donald Rumsfeld made to the military all future presidents will have a much easier time fighting wars.
Furthermore, To make life easy, Obama has even kept Bush's secretary of defense, Robert Gates.
In the end, there is little difference between the Bush foreign policy and the Obama foreign policy."

Bush might not be as intelligent as Clinton but you don't need to be a genius to know the difference between right and wrong.
You don't need to be a genius to say, "we can't continue to live safely and breath the same air as these terrorists - We must go after them."
It's something Clinton should have said before 9-11.
There were enough attacks on Americans to warrant a full scale attack on Al-Qaeda sanctuary's but Clinton didn't to it.
Iraq? The U.N. - or somebody - should have taken Saddam out a long time ago. Thanks to Bush he is no longer with us. All I can say, "good riddance Saddam.

Wrong. Firstly, every war Bush fought was with Reagan. It was the Republicans who provided WMD to Saddam under Reagan, it was Reagan under the Iran-Contra affair that provided the Iranians with heavy missiles and armament. The thing Bush and all Republicans are guilty of is for going into war trying to kill off thugs that they intalled under their last leadership. 1 million Iraqi's perished in the Iraq War per the Lancelot report - a well respected organization world over. What thugs did Bush support before he left office? I guarantee the next time a Republican is elected we will go after him...anyway, it's important to note that it's unlikely another Republican will be in power for a very very long time. Good riddance to all of you guys.

I agree with most of what "Concerned Citizen" and "Shannon in Montreal had to say.
History wiil likely be a lot kinder to Mr.Bush than most of us have been.Though I suspect Clintons failings will become clearer as time passes.
What "KC-Bby" misses is the fact that an approval rating is absolutely no indication that someone in politics is doing a good job for his country.Decisions must be made on the bais of effectiveness, not just because they are popular.A lot of leaders are forced to make tough choices.I respect those who can do that knowing the fallout will be messy.
"Concerned Canadian" seems willing to ignore Clintons role in the credit market meltdown. Please,no one post more partisan comments and liberal talking points than you do.Left wing losers take away our rights by getting their noses in our business, and imposing socialism on everyone. From my perspective, that's far more insideous than water boarding a few terrorists or wanting national solutions as opposed to separate standards in every state.
I also think "Darrell" is right when he says they are both likely to be quite pleased to be out of the Whitehouse.
All those who hate so much should actually walk a mile or two in the shoes of these people. And guess what? Not every Canadian believes in gat marriage either. It was shoved down our throats by the SCC after Chretien failed to live up to his promise to defend the role of traditional marriages. And no,we are not better off as a result. Not worse, but not better either. It has nothing to do with "equality".

Wings and Beer is the least of our worries! Read the "Smart Border Declaration and Action Plan" as well as Ontario Bill 85 to see what the real issues of this new ID system are.. when your done reading them, go on to check out the ICAO PKI documents and learn how this new ID framework of North America will play a role in a new Global ID system being developed by the UN and private business like CoreStreet LTD.

So I take it that you don't disagree with my claim that Mr. Bush was largely responsible for the credit meltdown? But you want me to acknowledge that Mr. Clinton bears some culpability too?
You're right. He does. He noticed that black people were not receiving loans to buy houses, and instructed Fannie May and Freddie Mac to ensure that they were treated equally. And to some extent, that led to the meltdown, because some of those people couldn't pay.
But Linda, there was no international financial problem until Mr., Bush and Mr. Gramm destroyed the legislation, in place since the '30's, that protected the public from those poor loans. There was no meltdown until George Bush was about to leave office, was there?
Besides which, we were talking about George Bush's legacy, not Bill Clinton's.
As for your claim that "left wing losers impose socialism on everyone," I wonder what you could possibly mean by that, since no federal government in Canada or the U.S. has ever been socialist, has it? So how can they be "imposing" anything on anyone?
On the other hand, politicians from other parties here in Canada have not been adverse to stealing ideas from the NDP or CCF under Tommy Douglas.
Remember Tommy Douglas? The man voted most important Canadian? He helped bring in universal health care, unemployment insurance and welfare, policies designed to help average people cope with life. Socialists are also big on education and on saving the environment.
Now which of these things do you wish had not been "imposed" on you? Education? Clean air? Health care? Help for the needy?
All socialist programs.
In in case the distinction eludes you, I'm not posting "left wing talking points". I'm making what I hope are rational arguments based on facts.
Try it. You'll like it.

In Canada we seperate religion for government - it's not the governments role to coddle or console the religious people about staying married. I appreciate that the divorce rate is skyrocketing but banning gays from marriage isn't gonna make husbands and wives not cheat on their spouses. Talk to a priest. Talk to a counsellor but don't ask gov't to waste taxpayer money to tell you that your marriage wasn't a mistake. Gays in Canada are legally married - now that they are, are you suggesting that your man/woman ain't looking so good anymore? More importantly, does the laws make you feel like you wanna switch "teams"? If not, I'd find some real problems to solve rather than imaging problems that aren't there.

You mention two things that G.W. Bush will be remembered for. Let's take them one at a time.
Of course there were no more attacks during Bush's presidency. But the only attack happened on his watch, didn't it?
Kind of negates the other claim, don't you think?
As for liberating Afghanistan and Iraq - are you seriously arguing that that's why he invaded those countries, to liberate them?
I thought he attacked Afghanistan because the Taliban wouldn't hand over Osama bib Laden? At least, that's what he said at the time.
Remember?
And wasn't it Mr. Bush who claimed that he invaded Iraq to find "weapons of mass destruction?"
There were none, so he then claimed he invaded to "
spread democracy in the region."
But if you'll do the reading, I think you'll find that the invasion had been planned back in '74 under Nixon. 9-11 provided the excuse.
And of course, the oil is always a nice bonus...
However, if it turns out that after Mr. Obama is done, that Iraq is able to maintain a democracy, then G.W. Will have played some part, however accidental, in that liberation.
That's something, I guess.
And by the way, how do you and Linda feel about Katrina?
Oops. So much for the legacy.

It is easier for any one of us to be arm chair presidents and to second guess their decisions.
Though, many of their decisions as Presidents are not always very popular, we always find out, 20yrs or so down the road, how important those decisions really were.
I'm still a little dismayed over Iraq and why Afghanistan was all but forgotten by Bush as well as Clintons handling of the Balkans and Somalia, especially how he was being too political by not supporting his ground troops in Mogadishu with the proper fire power, thus leading up to the infamous Blackhawk down.
But still, two veteran statesman who I have much respect for, regardless of their political stripes.

Concerned Canadian - Linda in Vancouver don't you mean policies to help average people become more dependant on the government - the government to become the master not the slave? Education! Is not an intitlement, its a privilage, if you can't pay for it, work hard save your money and then learn. Clean air! The earth is bigger than you can imagine, it will clean itself - don't believe the "Chicken Little" stories. Health care! If socialized medicine is so good, why doesn't the government allow private health care providers to compete with provincial? Or allow people to purchase their own insurance if they choose to? Help for the needy? I know of many private agencies that do a much better job at helping those less fortunate than the government can. I would rather give money to a charity than be forced to to support government welfare programs through the taxes they impose on us.

Neither were great presidents but it was Clinton who captained the western world economy into the greatest economic boom in history and it was the Bush league that captained the same right into what is growing into the worst economic disaster in history plus TWO ongoing and unwinnable wars, one of which is arguably illegle (and has been labled as such by respected international bodies) as well as being rife with war crimes that were worst ordered and at best tacitly approved by the Bush league administration.
The fact that Bush was elected twice proves one should never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Government is supposed to work for the people, but the people cant know everything. Many secrets need to be kept by government, such as GWB and WJC have.
Many of the US problems are from decades of actions or inactions, so its really unfair to blame any one guy for anything. We've already seen Obama switch positions on issues. Is it perhaps now he knows more than he did while campaigning?
As a mechanic, I have to deal with all kinds of people who think they have a clue whats wrong with their cars because they read something on the internet. Very very rarely are they even in the ballpark.
In other words, leave the problems to the professionals. They know way more than you.
Just because you can drive a car, it doesnt make you a mechanic, and just because you can vote, it doesnt make you a PM or President.

Have you ever heard in your LIBERAL circle about pre-9/11 and post 9/11 MENTALITY (laws as well)? Of course all the security laws and measures in place up to the TERRORIST attacks of 9/11 were the same ones in place all the time before including the FIRST World Trade Center terrorist attack on Feb 1993 in NYC, what LIBERAL Clinton did to PREVENT the REAL 9/11 of 2001?
And again, any more TERRORIST attacks since 9/11 when the post-9/11 tough measures have all been implemented for the sake of all of us around here, so, any terrorist attacks since then, any?
And about your cooments on Afghanistan and Iraq: who cares about his (that's W) mindset prior to the begining of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, those people are now FREE, again, FREE, F-R-E-E, do you like YOUR freedoms or not, if YES, you have no right to deny the same type of FREEDOMS to the poor people of Afghanistan and Iraq. Apparently Obama is a very high commodity in an ultra liberal environment like Hollywood, tickets to Wednesday night's two-tiered event ranged from $1,000 to $15,200. The lower prices bought access to a ballroom where Obama made a second, much shorter speech.
