TORONTO — One of the longest running love triangles may be about to come to an end.

Comic book legend Archie Andrews is going to propose to Veronica later this year, according to Archie Comics' official website.

It's promoting the release of Archie issue number 600, due to go on sale Sept. 8.

The website tells fans to prepare themselves for the Archie story they thought they'd never see.

The competition between Veronica and Betty for Archie's attention has been the cornerstone of Archie Comics for 65 years.

The Archie website is calling it the "the Archie Story of the Century."

The website shows an image of the issue with a blue suited Archie on one knee in front of a beaming Veronica with a caption that reads "yes."

Betty is teary-eyed and pal Jughead looks stunned.

One comment posted on the website indicated that Archie is marrying the wrong girl.

"Personally I think he should marry Betty," a person named Kelly posted.

"She is cuter, more down to earth and not as flighty as Veronica."

Did Archie make the right choice? Tell us what you think.

Way to go, Archie.

He's been thinking about it for 65 years - high time to make a decision, wouldn't ya say? :)

Finally! Something different from the Archie Comic book series. At least we know that it's original. I used to be a big fan of this comic. I had most of the issues until one day I was reading a new issue and realized that they had simply used an older story and repeated it (can you say "filler"). How lazy can you be? I stopped buying them from that moment on. No wonder they had to think up a scheme to increase the readership. All I have to say to the Archie Comic creators is........big deal.....what else do you have???? Cheating, Separation, Affairs, Kids, Divorce, Joint Custody?
Good Luck.

Yes Archie might propose to Veronica, but will she accept his proposal? I to think Betty would be by far the better catch. Can’t wait to see that issue.

As a teen ager in the mid 70's I was hooked on Archie comic books. I agree with the Kelly person, if that is true that Archie is proposing to Veronica, he is asking the wrong person. Betty is the nicer one. And anyway, Mr. Lodge (Veronica's dad) hates Archie.

Noooooo! So now what, they get married, have kids and move to the suburbs? I've been reading Archie comics for twenty years, and I like them the way that they are! The whole essence of Archie comics is the love triangle, and teen life; beaches, boys, shopping and schoolwork. That's how it should be; enough parts of my childhood have grown up without this, thank you very much.

It may not be a top news story but at least it is something light amongst all the doom and gloom reported in the news today. Personally, I think he will be making the wrong choice. Betty is a much better fit for him :)

Haha! I don't think the proposal is for real when the #600 issue comes. Yes, it will feature everything happening, but what if the ending turns out something else? That I'll have to see!

I've been reading Archie comics for over 30 years, still reading now but only with older stories as I find the newer stories from the last 20 years being so-so. The newest stories with new look of the Archie gang are quite good finally.

The Archie company had been using the love triangle for angles to keep us, the fans, for 65 years in gussing who Archie will hook up. I doubt they'll break the ritual!

Good Luck Archie Andrews, and thanks for all the years keeping Riverdale the way it is for 65 years!

Smart of Archie to choose money. Mr Lodge must be 150 years old by now, Archie won't have long to wait for his inheritance. As to Betty, it's time to move on, girl...

went for the cash, did he.

You call this news?! N.Korea's testing nuclear weapons and could be going to war against S.Korea AGAIN and you're reporting how an imaginary comic book character is going to propose?

I'd understand if this story was tucked away in the entertainment section but no, it's out on the front page!

The editor of CTV must be a big Archie fan.

Just like with TV it's a ratings ploy. Of course they pick the 'wrong girl' so people will buy the comics. No 'tension' when they live happily ever after. They are supposed to be high school students so the whole thing is stupid anyway. I guess like with all creative endevours now, they just ran out of ideas.....

Awesome top news. Honestly, I live in the middle of what appears to be some sort of gang war, or other stupidity. It's nice to read something that doesn't make me afraid to go outside.

I don't even read Archie, but I'm sure that it'll turn out that there was someone waiting for poor Betty all along, much like Betty was waiting for Archie.

Nice diversion from the usual doom and gloom news stories. At age 65 they will be getting married just in time to collect old age pensions and do some income splitting on their RRSP annuities. They should also get some good seniors' discounts on many of the wedding services. You see, it pays to be patient.

Yeah, it'll be all great until Veronica mysteriously disappears on "business trips" and returns to a naive Archie until he notices a rash and is diagnosed with herpes. Archie divorces and tries to sue her but she has more money and he doesn't get anything because his lame legal aid lawyer isn't smart enough to fight the pre-nup. So, Archie goes and begs for Betty to take 'em back and they both live happily ever after in a shack in the woods where they live off the avails of growing weed for Jughead and his friends. She gets knocked up and has 12 kids, he slowly becomes an abusive alcoholic, gets into crack, the cops arrest him for public indecencies, he tries to jump off a bridge and kill himself but lives with a brain injury with Betty taking care of everything.

Doesn't Archie know there's a marriage strike on?

Here's a real item that ought to make the news but never does: young men between 19 and 35 in North America and Europe are opting out of marriage, or any long-term committment to women, according to a university study (google marriage strike).

Over 35% of these men say they plan never to marry. Many more are delaying marriage for as long as possible.

This has the potential to be a cultural earthquake, but it is never covered by the press because it is "politically incorrect" to discuss whther men have a choice about their relationship to women. Only women, it seems, are newsworthy when it comes to gender relationships.

But for many young men, marriage has become too problematic, and not really necessary. Divorce laws are stacked against them, and many see older men going through hell trying to see their kids while paying outrageous sums in alimony.

Meanwhile, women's liberation has made many women financially independent, and sexually available.

So why bother to marry?

Go ahead and get married Archie.

And when you get divorced, take Veronica for every penny she's got.

Why Veronica?!

I've been reading Archie for almost 25 years, and I always thought Veronica was quite cruel towards him in the majority of the stories.I really think Betty would be a better choice for him because she truly cares about Archie a lot more than Veronica ever has.

Also she's smarter, and nicer than Veronica...

Archie chose the right one. This way he gets the Lodge's money and can still have a fling with Betty. Its the best of both worlds.

BTW, what does Reggie Mantle have to say about all this? This may turn the Archie comics into the Punisher.

Archie proposing to Veronica is definately an error. They will both have a frustrating life.
Betty would be the better choice because she is down to earth and "real" whereas Veronica is a user and a spoiled brat.
I have read Archie Comics "forever"
I believe marriage is too final for this comic unless you are going into retirement (Heaven Forbid).

The rivalry between Betty and Veronica cannot end. It's the background of the whole series.

California won't allow gay marriage. Canada has allowed gay marriage for years, and somehow the sky has not fallen on our heads.

Anyone ever notice that Jughead doesn't like girls, and just eats all the time? Trying to suppress some "feelings" Juggie?

It's 2009 people, ARCHIE SHOULD MARRY JUGHEAD!!

So Archie is going to propose to Veronica huh? If this is true then hopefully he will do a Jason Mesnick and retract his proposal. Unless they plan on ending publication of Archie comic books,I think I'm of the same opinion as "Paul in Regina".

And what are we being asked to pay attention to--a bit of fluff about two commic book charactors that would be in an old age centre or worse if they aged in real time. Hell, I am 65 and I read Archie when I was 10 (and quit when I was 12. Lets keep the funny papers out of a serious news service.

No, it may not be news, but I am totally disheartened reading about the recession and people who kill little children. It's just too painful to contemplate, so it's nice to see something light instead! I think that Archie will get a "no" to his proposal, and that Betty and Veronica will go on to become successful career women. Girl Power!

I find the whole thing kinda bizarre, does it mean the comics are being wrapped up? otherwise what is the point to this climax? and Archie should have chosen niceness (ie Betty) over beatch with money, bad choice Arch. clearly this story falls under entertainment, but it is somewhat historic since the comics have been around ever since I can remember, the 60s anyways. I read them, my daughter read them, so it is interesting in that sense. also agree with comment that not all news has to be bad, some of it can just be goofy and light. lighten up folks. you will live longer than reading about how big our deficit or the Larry Obrien trial!
