A Columbia University professor is warning the public about the negative health effects of man-made electromagnetic fields, which come out of cellphones and power lines.

Dr. Martin Blank, a professor with the school's Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, compared the EMF waves to the ripples caused by dropping a pebble into a quiescent pond.

"The water doesn't move, it just carries the energy further and further out," Blank told CTV's Canada AM Wednesday.

"It's the same thing about these waves. These waves are generated in all kinds of charges that are present anywhere.

"When you get an electromagnetic field that's coming out of a power line, or it's coming out of a cellphone antenna or a cellphone tower it's going to do things to the molecules in our body."

Blank says EMFs in the environment may lead to brain tumours, Alzheimer's disease, dementia and breast cancer.

Blank, who is speaking in Toronto Wednesday on behalf of the BioInitiative Working Group, said past research has focused too much on the thermal effects of man-made EMFs.

"The heat is what everyone has focused on largely because that was an easy thing to measure," he said.

However, Blank said researchers are now able to measure biochemical changes.

"The biochemical changes occur long before there are changes in temperature," he said.

"That's why people who have focused on the thermal effects, which is the measure of the heat, have gotten the wrong answer."

He said researchers have concluded that there is no real harm because they haven't found any changes in temperature.

"That's not true, there's a lot of change going on there," Blank said.

"One of the changes we've found is the stress response. The cells themselves are telling us that they're in trouble."

In the "language of the cells," they start to make new proteins that they haven't made before and that they only make when they're in trouble.

"These stress proteins are made with all these different electromagnetic fields (EMF)," he said.

"They're made with power line EMFs, they're made with cellphone EMFs and there a clear indication that the cell senses this stuff as potentially harmful."

if electromagnetic rays are being let off by cell phones, then why keep making them? I understand that cell phones are a way of life now, but with the technology we have now, i am pretty sure that they could come up with a cell phone that doesn't produce these EMFs. As for having power lines or phone lines that give off teh same thing as cell phones... why bring it up now? Way back when phone lines were first invented there was no such thing. I am sure there was but it wasn't brought up. Why now? What is the big issue? Cell phones have given off way worse things. Such as my school being evacuated because someone dropped their ipod touch and it started to smoke. how safe is that?

since these types of wave are so prevelent and touch virtually everyone, surely this warrants more in depth investigation. I hope the scientists among us will be doing that soon, before potential harm becomes real harm.

pretty simple if you ask me, power lines are harmful if you house is under them, cell phones give you a tumor! thats all i need to hear, im not getting a tumor but probily lung cancer or maby even liver failure, its better than a brain clot!

Im pretty sure that all forms of electricity are harming us. The magnetic lines of flux caused from electro-magnetism are cell damaging. Electricity is slowly killing us.

However...

all you have to do is drive to know that cell phones are dangerous. Everytime you see a stupid move, the driver is almost always on the phone.

Tell that to all the irresponsible parents out there that are buying their 12 year olds cell phones.

Would you put your kids head in a microwave? Probably not...
So why let them use a cell phone?

I believe magnetic fields can disrupt or mimic the communication between cells and cause random results. I personally saw EMI (Electron Magnetic Interference) random signals mimic computer RS-232 serial data even with the CRC check.
If you are very concern, magnetic measuring device can be purchase, such as the eME3030B Gauss meter (16Hz to 2KHz) for home.

im sure we have other things to worry about in the world than than "harmful" cell phone senses.. no matter how hard we try everything is a hazard towards our health

Kids shouldn't have cellphones anyways. They are only a "social necessity". They limit real communication by reducing it to text and phonecalls. They are also a major distraction in school.

For all parents who encourage (or let) their children take cellphones to school - shame. If you need to contact them, phone the school!

During cell mitosis, the division of one cell into two, the DNA splits itself down the middle to create another cell. What isn't known is what effect EMFs have on the DNA during this process. Do EMFs cause the dna to mutate during mitosis? I would think so. What isn't known is what effect harmonic EMFs have on the dna as well. Harmonic EMFs happen when two waves intersect through a living organism. For me the answer is obvious, if this occurs during cell mitosis you are looking at a mutation. In plain English - cancer.

the price that is paid for convenience.
probably a lifetime of man made EMF's would be equal to a weeks worth of the suns rays or the worlds natural EMF

Anyone else feel that we are all doomed? If it's not a pandemic, global warming, natural disasters, disease, aging, war, meteors, it's now little waves we cannot see/hear/feel.

Oh puh-lease! Not another one of these articles. Don't scientists have better things to do like looking for a cure to disease instead of wasting taxpayer money doing studies on ridiculous things? I mean honestly how many cell phone studies are these guys gonna waste money on?

"Dr. Martin Blank, a professor with the school's Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, compared the EMF waves to the ripples caused by dropping a pebble into a quiescent pond.

'The water doesn't move, it just carries the energy further and further out,'"

Obviously buddy boy has not been out doing his fishing; sure what he says is true, but he forgot to mention that the further out from the ripples, the weaker then energy and eventually the energy from the waves dissipates until there is nothing left.

Regardless, this article is not preventing me from stopping or limiting my cell usage.

We are bathed in EMF everywhere we live. You don't have to be close to a transmission line or have a cellphone to your head. There is no escape. More study would show the problem but we can not do anything to stop it.

It's like the effects of second hand smoke. You don't think you are a participant but you suffer the effects anyway.

Don't worry. The giant meteorite will come and reset the planet soon enough.

They've been saying this for years...it's an unfortunate sign of the times and not something we're going to be able to get away from.

On the plus side, I wonder if this means they're closer to perfecting the Flux Capacitor....

In some Scandanavian countries they don't even hardwire phones in. Everyone uses cells. Has anyone compared the brain cancer rates of those countries to countries that have far less usage? We have to be a bit careful with what we condemn too soon. Remember coffee= cancer, eggs= hardening of the arteries, oatbran= cure for everything.....

I know a 17yr old boy who has just been diagnose with testicular cancer. One of the questions the oncologist asked him was do you keep your cell phone in your front pocket. Are my kids allowed to have a cell phone? NO... I cringe every time I see a young child with a cell. Are cells are more vulnerable to damage during the years of growth and puberty. It will be interesting and devastating to see the increase in certain cancers in the years to come as these children become adults.

There have always been risks of using Cell phones. People should just learn to used their Cell phones in moderation.

Here's a couple of other cellphone health hazards:
Talking on phone walking into intersection
Talking on phone while riding bike
Talking on phone while jogging??
Talking on phone while rollerblading
Dropping phone in car and trying to fish it out from under the seat.
Talking on phone while driving
Texting while driving
and the best one...
Using laptop or watching a DVD while driving!

Cell phones may be hazardous but the idea of banning them is just plain wrong. People have a choice to get a cell phone, so they are risking their own health. Cell phones are mainly owned by teenagers, so banning them would cause a huge rebellion. Plus in order for a cell phone to cause any real damage to a person’s health, you would have to use it practically non-stop. People are making a mountain out of a molehill. Why don’t we focus more on the problems that really affect us.

The funny thing is, cell phones haven't been around long enough to do a study. The public has only been using c-phones for about 15 years now. So i thnk that we should heed this message. In the near future we will be hearing a lot worst.
These c-phone companies are already marketing c-phones fore 6,7 and 8 year olds and the sad thing is parents will buy them. The excuse will be that their children can be contacted at any time. Or what if there is an emergency?
Human nature is nothing to be proud of. When the s**t hits the fan we will be blaming these same scientist for not warning us. As for me, i haven't used a c-phone since their creation.

I agree with DL Manitoba. They should make cell phones that do not give off so much energy fields, if they are so concerned about than make a change. Of course people will want their cell phone so better get going on working on a phone.

Maybe we should get people to stop using cell phones while driving. Doesn't that present a more acute hazard and one that can be eliminated much easier?

It's coming up now because there is a way to measure it now. Smoking just didn't become bad all of a sudden with the Surgeon Generals warning in the 1960s.It was bad all along, but the general population was just being ignorant.

DL Manitoba: "i am pretty sure that they could come up with a cell phone that doesn't produce these EMFs"

In order for any device to transmit wirelessly, electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is required along with the associated electromagnetic field. This is true for cell phones, radio waves, TV signals (if you still use rabbit ears), etc. The only difference is in the frequency and wavelength of the EMR photons (and therefore their energy as energy is proportional to frequency and Planck's constant and inversely proportional to wavelength).

I can guarantee you that even with "modern science", there is still no way to communicate wirelessly without EMR and EMF.

If we want to live free of EMF, we had better get used to living without wireless communications, electrical power, etc.

He's right! However, there is only one reason we all will turn a blind eye. $$ Profits always come before anything else. Everyone at an individual level (self interest) is more interested in $$ until something goes wrong.

PS to my previous message.

The comments of most of these others show just how little people understand. DL Manitoba you are way, way, misinformed about the whole thing! EMF is how the cell phones transmit thier information. No EMF no phone!

And this is a surprise??!!
this is just one thing on a very long list of items causing us harm. the exhaust from city busses, sitting in front of a computer at work and home all day long.... It's about supply and demand. Money makes the world go' round- when people buy products (harmful or otherwise) it generates profits! think about cigarettes- a product that kills and yet willingly people buy this product which generates multi-billion dollars for the tobacco companies and billions of dollars for the healthcare system and government dealing with the health-related affects. The long term health problems related to cell phones will create and maintain revenue and jobs for research and treatment... cycle of life? I think so..
The consumer is equally to blame.

This is a massive issue in a country with a communist health care system. I can't wait for everyone to start asking for taxpayers money to heal their cancer because they couldn't be bothered to use a land line or make a decision on their own without calling somebody.
