A Columbia University professor is warning the public about the negative health effects of man-made electromagnetic fields, which come out of cellphones and power lines.
Dr. Martin Blank, a professor with the school's Department of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, compared the EMF waves to the ripples caused by dropping a pebble into a quiescent pond.
"The water doesn't move, it just carries the energy further and further out," Blank told CTV's Canada AM Wednesday.
"It's the same thing about these waves. These waves are generated in all kinds of charges that are present anywhere.
"When you get an electromagnetic field that's coming out of a power line, or it's coming out of a cellphone antenna or a cellphone tower it's going to do things to the molecules in our body."
Blank says EMFs in the environment may lead to brain tumours, Alzheimer's disease, dementia and breast cancer.
Blank, who is speaking in Toronto Wednesday on behalf of the BioInitiative Working Group, said past research has focused too much on the thermal effects of man-made EMFs.
"The heat is what everyone has focused on largely because that was an easy thing to measure," he said.
However, Blank said researchers are now able to measure biochemical changes.
"The biochemical changes occur long before there are changes in temperature," he said.
"That's why people who have focused on the thermal effects, which is the measure of the heat, have gotten the wrong answer."
He said researchers have concluded that there is no real harm because they haven't found any changes in temperature.
"That's not true, there's a lot of change going on there," Blank said.
"One of the changes we've found is the stress response. The cells themselves are telling us that they're in trouble."
In the "language of the cells," they start to make new proteins that they haven't made before and that they only make when they're in trouble.
"These stress proteins are made with all these different electromagnetic fields (EMF)," he said.
"They're made with power line EMFs, they're made with cellphone EMFs and there a clear indication that the cell senses this stuff as potentially harmful."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

However...
all you have to do is drive to know that cell phones are dangerous. Everytime you see a stupid move, the driver is almost always on the phone.

Would you put your kids head in a microwave? Probably not...
So why let them use a cell phone?

If you are very concern, magnetic measuring device can be purchase, such as the eME3030B Gauss meter (16Hz to 2KHz) for home.

For all parents who encourage (or let) their children take cellphones to school - shame. If you need to contact them, phone the school!

probably a lifetime of man made EMF's would be equal to a weeks worth of the suns rays or the worlds natural EMF

Obviously buddy boy has not been out doing his fishing; sure what he says is true, but he forgot to mention that the further out from the ripples, the weaker then energy and eventually the energy from the waves dissipates until there is nothing left.
Regardless, this article is not preventing me from stopping or limiting my cell usage.

It's like the effects of second hand smoke. You don't think you are a participant but you suffer the effects anyway.
Don't worry. The giant meteorite will come and reset the planet soon enough.

On the plus side, I wonder if this means they're closer to perfecting the Flux Capacitor....

These c-phone companies are already marketing c-phones fore 6,7 and 8 year olds and the sad thing is parents will buy them. The excuse will be that their children can be contacted at any time. Or what if there is an emergency?
Human nature is nothing to be proud of. When the s**t hits the fan we will be blaming these same scientist for not warning us. As for me, i haven't used a c-phone since their creation.

In order for any device to transmit wirelessly, electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is required along with the associated electromagnetic field. This is true for cell phones, radio waves, TV signals (if you still use rabbit ears), etc. The only difference is in the frequency and wavelength of the EMR photons (and therefore their energy as energy is proportional to frequency and Planck's constant and inversely proportional to wavelength).
I can guarantee you that even with "modern science", there is still no way to communicate wirelessly without EMR and EMF.
If we want to live free of EMF, we had better get used to living without wireless communications, electrical power, etc.

The comments of most of these others show just how little people understand. DL Manitoba you are way, way, misinformed about the whole thing! EMF is how the cell phones transmit thier information. No EMF no phone!

this is just one thing on a very long list of items causing us harm. the exhaust from city busses, sitting in front of a computer at work and home all day long.... It's about supply and demand. Money makes the world go' round- when people buy products (harmful or otherwise) it generates profits! think about cigarettes- a product that kills and yet willingly people buy this product which generates multi-billion dollars for the tobacco companies and billions of dollars for the healthcare system and government dealing with the health-related affects. The long term health problems related to cell phones will create and maintain revenue and jobs for research and treatment... cycle of life? I think so..
The consumer is equally to blame.
