Two contradictory portrayals of Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla emerged Tuesday during a hearing into allegations of nanny abuse.
On one hand, two caregivers said Dhalla was a cruel taskmaster who overworked them and mistreated them during stints at the Dhalla household last year.
On the other hand, Dhalla described herself as the victim of a cruel smear campaign who has nothing to hide.
In an opening statement before the standing committee for citizenship and immigration, which is investigating the allegations, Dhalla questioned the veracity of the claims and decried what she said were attacks on her character.
"I, like many others, are trying to wonder why these caregivers have come forward 15 months later, after leaving our home on what I thought was on good terms," Dhalla said, her voice shaking.
"I don't know what their motive is, but I do want to tell all of you today that I have nothing to hide and I have done nothing wrong."
The caregivers -- Magdalene Gordo, 31, and Richelyn Tongson, 37 -- have said they were forced to work long hours and complete tasks such as washing the family cars when they were hired to care for Dhalla's mother starting in February 2008.
In video testimony from Toronto on Tuesday, Gordo said she quit the job when the hours became unbearable and it appeared Dhalla would not follow through on promises to get her a work permit.
"As the days went by, I felt uncomfortable and overworked, working from 7:30 a.m. until 11 p.m. ... doing various household chores, not caregiving jobs," Gordo said.
"I did not see any proof that she would fulfill her promise of sponsoring me ... She and her mother repeatedly insisted in asking for my passport."
Gordo said that on one instance, Dhalla called her from her constituency office and demanded she give up her passport.
"I told her that I had left it in my apartment. Ruby angrily shot back with an order: 'If you don't give your passport then I will never sponsor you,'" Gordo said.
"From this day on, I became concerned and terribly worried about my situation working for Dr. Ruby Dhalla without the proper documentation."
Gordo also alleged that Dhalla yelled at her, called her names and did not pay her for a month after she gave notice that she would be quitting.
Allegations from third caregiver
Last week, the MP for Brampton-Springdale denied the claims by the two former caregivers, as well as a third caregiver, Lyle Alvarez, who stepped forward to say she too was overworked and under-compensated.
In a news conference with her lawyer last Friday, Dhalla called the claims "false and unsubstantiated."
"Anyone that has ever entered our home has always been treated with love, with care, with compassion and respect," Dhalla said.
"As such, the allegations that have been brought forward against myself have come as a big shock and have been devastating to both myself and my family, friends and supporters."
On Tuesday, Dhalla repeated earlier denials that she hired the caregivers and said it was her brother, Neil, and mother who oversaw their work.
Dhalla produced flight boarding passes in an attempt to prove that she was not in Brampton for much of the time that the caregivers' worked for her family.
But Gordo said Neil Dhalla "was never involved in interviewing me, orienting me in the job responsibilities, nor supervising me. He never introduced himself as my employer. He did not discuss employment issues with me."
Gordo said her only contact with Neil Dhalla was when he showed her how to shine his shoes and care for his suits.
In her testimony on Tuesday, Dhalla also disputed claims that the caregivers were forced to shovel snow or clean the family's chiropractic clinics, holding up receipts to show the work was done by companies the family hired.
Dhalla's lawyer, Howard Levitt, said Friday that the allegations are part of an orchestrated smear campaign to destroy her reputation and ruin her political career.
Dhalla also hinted as much when she spoke of a meeting between the caregivers and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.
When asked about the meeting, Kenney denied any smear campaign and said his department was in touch with the caregivers last week.
"Whenever we have bona fide whistle blowers, the standard practice is to ensure that people are not punished for talking about abusive situations," he said Tuesday.
The allegations ended Dhalla's tenure as the Liberals' multiculturalism and youth critic, a role she resigned from last week to focus on clearing her name. She is still an MP.
Two Ontario MPPs have also been swept up in the controversy.
The nannies told their stories at a community meeting attended by Ontario Labour Minister Peter Fonseca and Education Minister Kathleen Wynne last month, but neither politician reported the claims to federal officials.
Fonseca is also expected to appear before the standing committee for citizenship and immigration.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

And, if she's already resigned her critic's post, (an opposition role, no hands on the levers of power) who exactly would be trying to "smear" her, and for what possible benefit?
Just asking...

King Iggy will enjoy this free publicity,if only there was as much of a public outcry when people use personal attacks on Prime Minister Harper, the only PM in recent years to take a stand on tough issues and support the military.I think that maybe the PC Party needs someone like General Rick Hillier to lead Canada, then maybe we wouldn't have terrorist organizations like the Tamil Tigers blocking sections of a major highway here in Toronto.
Canada is not the cure all for every problem in the World. For those that have adopted Canada as their new home, abide by our laws, you came here because it was better than where you were living so do not turn this beautiful country (my country into what you have left behind)as A Proud Canadian and a Patriot I ask you not to disrespect what so many have given their lives for and what we all take for granted.

It used to be that Canadians would reserve their judgments on a person 'til all the facts were out.
Apparently nowadays we have all taken on the fox news mentality of crucifying anyone who has been accused of anything.
Fact - there are good and bad politicians, there are good and bad liberals, good and bad conservatives.
If this is how we are going to treat anyone who runs for (or is in) office we can, it will only be a matter of time till all we have left are liars and crooks in the parliament.

It is also a political tactic to Smear sitting MPs into giving up desired/marginal seats.
Conservatives did similar to sitting NDP Zana Akande whose career was over by the time she was Cleared of any wrong doing.
Fact that a Cleaning Contract existed for work caregivers Claim to have done, and MP Dhalla did not engage them, questions Legitimacy of complaints and Motives.
Diff here is that sitting MP chose to confront her accusers with Facts, rather than allow the accusations to languish while her Political Career disappeared into oblivion. A REFRESHING precedent.
Are caregivers so in demand that Sponsorship has become a Condition for Employment? I'd guess NOT.

Whether Ms. Dhalla is "guilty" of abusing former caregivers is unknown to me; however, I do know that in the game in which she plays (politics) it often serves one best to punch an accuser square in the face, between the eyes, as hard and as fast as possible.
We've already witnessed Ms. Dhalla's lawyer puff his chest and wave his finger, in a clear attempt to let these "immigrant" women know that they're going to need facial protection (so to speak).
Again, I don't know the facts here...but I do know that this is, essentially, how most "guilty" politicians defend themselves anyway.
P.S. Personally, I find it hard to believe that any parliamentary royalty in the Liberal party (with its moral superiority and love of throwing the word "compassion" around) could ever mistreat a vulnerable person in their employ.

Caregivers hired to take care of a mother who only needs a foot massage is another one that stands out. Am I under the mistaken impression that caregivers are for people with mobility issues or children? I have had Filipino caregivers for my late mother and have always found them to be scrupulously honest. I find it a bit of a stretch that they could be acting out of political motive.

In this matter we have many evidences to suggest that these "caregivers" or nannies being more applicable were in fact under the control of this MP named Ruby Dhalla.
We are dealing with isolated women in a strange country having allegedly had their passports taken away from and the excuses for that situation having existed cannot be justified. We have immigrants from the Phillipines which is where many of the exploited women and young children come from. They live in fear day to day knowing that this MP could have them returned to their country. We have low pay for far too many hours of work.
Even dogs know very well to never bite the hands that feed them. If these nannies were being treated in such a wonderful manner as this now disgraced MP Ruby Dhalla says they were......then why have they bitten the hand that feeds them?
The best thing that Ruby Dhalla could do for herself right now is to simply resign and get away from this matter before it gets even uglier. Even then I still believe that this matter ought to be investigated thoroughly by the RCMP. What are they waiting for...........?
