Thousands of Tamil protesters have left Toronto's Gardiner Expressway, after surging onto the highway to call attention to the escalating civilian death toll in Sri Lanka.
Around midnight, protesters began making their way down an on-ramp as police monitored the situation. Some told ctvtoronto.ca they planned to take their demonstration to Queen's Park.
Reporters and witnesses at the scene said the demonstration was largely peaceful. However, police arrested at least one person and video taken from a nearby highrise showed a bicycle being thrown at officers.
Activists demanded to speak to a representative of Prime Minister Stephen Harper about the civil war in Sri Lanka, but police said that would not be possible. Reports say the protesters agreed to leave the area because the Liberal party said it would address their concerns in Parliament.
Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters late Sunday it was an "unlawful and unsafe" protest, and the RCMP and the OPP were assisting. He said protesters gave no indication they were planning to take to the Gardiner.
Blair also said he was extremely concerned about the presence of children at the protest and said the elevated highway itself was very dangerous for people on foot.
"I'm very concerned about the safety of children, I think it's an extremely dangerous situation to put children on the front line of a protest in that way, I think it puts them at tremendous risk," he said.
Ghormy Theva, a protester on the Gardiner, told CTV Newsnet Sunday evening that demonstrations would continue until "definite" action was taken by the Canadian government.
At one point, more than 100 Toronto police were on the scene and had set up a perimeter on the highway. Vehicular traffic was severely backlogged on the Gardiner, a major thoroughfare in the city.
Officers on the scene were reportedly armed with tear gas, and police described the protesters as "uncooperative."
The national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress. David Poopalapillai, told CTV Newsnet Sunday that "desperate times call for desperate action."
But he said he was taken "off-guard" by Sunday's protest and said recognized the inconvenience it caused to motorists.
A second protest shut down the University Ave. and College St. intersection.
The protesters rallied after international news agencies reported nearly 400 civilians were killed during an overnight artillery bombardment. The Sri Lankan military is denying launching the assault that killed 378 civilians and wounded about 1,100.
Thousands are fleeing Sri Lanka's war zone as tensions between the military and Tamil Tiger rebels escalate.
Reports are hard to confirm because of a ban on journalists and aid workers in the war zone. Late Sunday, protesters disputed the death toll from the artillery bombardment, saying it was in the thousands.
The demonstrators protested in Toronto yesterday afternoon as well, marching through the city and ending up on the lawns of Queen's Park.
On Sunday, about 2,000 Toronto Tamils crowded several streets, making their way in front of the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

What do they think the Canadian government has the power to do? The UN and Canada has asked for a ceasefire.
Canada is NOT going to invade Sri Lanka to save a group that labels it a terrorist organization! What's next invading Iraq to stop the persecution of Al-Qaeda members there?

Most Tamils were brought in from India at one time to work plantation and are not native to the Sir Lanka but they want thier own homeland.
They should be protesting the terrorist that claim to represent them, not the government that is protecting a civilian population that has suffered attacks too many times.
The terrorists refuse to wear a uniform and hide behind kids while shooting, you tell me who is to blame.

This is not Canada's fight. Not to take away from the atrocities that are happening over there being committed by both sides, but our government has branded the Tamil Tigers a terrorist organization - and now people flying their flag are allowed to close down major roads and thoroughfare over a conflict that Canada has no part in?

Do any of them have jobs here, or are they all on welfare or what?
Canada has become a haven for these people who run away from the troubles of thier native land and then disrupt our peace or try to instill thier beliefs and customs on us.
Canada has no business in the political problems of Sri Lanka or any other country, and we should not put up with these protests.

Sure, Canada is a peacekeeping country, that doesn't mean that you can block our highways and DEMAND that we save a terrorist organization responsible for the death of many the recruitment of child soldiers, and genocide from the Sri Lankan government.
We ought to send some troops in to help get rid of these people... not help them.

I hope to god that this mothers day is not the last one for somebody stuck in traffic.
Or even worse a Mother, Father son or daughter is given a chance to live by being able to get to hospital in time is something horrible happens.
Protesting is a way to make people aware of the problem.
This is now a hostage situation which by the way is a act of terrorism.

of law abiding citizens. You have to ask how many of these people were born in Canada. Those that were not, I'm sure we could raise enough funds for them to return home to look after things there. The other question is, how many of these people have jobs and
if not, are we supporting them. They're costing us a fortune with their nonsence.

When it comes to Tamil-Canadians, we treat them like dirt and accuse their political agenda of wanting to aid the rebels. Where do you get your misinformation? The Tamils are protesting against the genocide in Sri Lanka, about the civilians who are dying. They are opposed just as much to what the rebels are doing as to what the government is doing. And all we can observe is that very small minority of people who actually support the Tigers, and emphasize as if 'all' Tamils are rebels. Quebec anyone? During the October Crisis, we had an entire army brought in, when there was only maybe 30 active members in the FLQ. Just like the Tamil-Canadians want for their people and families back home, the Québécois desired self-autonomy and freedom.
What can Canada do? As a nation, Canada, moreso than the United Nations, can put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to allow aid workers to bring relief, support, food, and aid to the refugees. We can pressure the government to allow reporters in, in order to lift the censorship and evaluate the extent of the situation. No one mentioned anything about invading; we can barely even take care of a fraction of Afghanistan, but we can help the general population by bringing medical supplies and food, which the Sri Lankan government forbids.

1) Find all the children in the crowd and take them into protective custody.
2) Inform the protesters that they are blocking a major highway, and have 5 minutes to cease and desist or face arrest.
3) Wait 5 minutes.
4) Deploy water guns and tear gas to break up the crowd.
5) Begin mass arrests for anyone who remains on the highway.

A terrorist, whether it be the Taliban or the LTTE, is a terrorist. And terrorism is a issue that should not only concern Sri Lankans, but rather the world.
The accusation of 300 and some people killed by the Sri Lankan army came from Tamilnet, which is a pro-LTTE website!!!!

The unrealistic expectation of the protestors to have the Canadian government intervene in the policies of another nation is ridiculous, each state has its own autonomy and if the Tamils want change they should look to the government of Sri Lanka and not Canada. Canada has condemned the deaths on both sides, this is a civil war and not the problem of our peaceful country.

We are already heavily engaged in another foreign military venture halfway across the world (Afghanistan) and are in the midst of a recession. There is neither the will nor the resources in this country for another costly international humanitarian operation.
So with that said, I believe that the only thing these protests are accomplishing is turning the vast majority of the city (and the country for that matter) against the protestors.

However, before jumping to conclusions and suggesting that people should be forceably removed. Please take a moment to do impartial research on the issue, before making harsh comments. Although, I do agree this protest may not be the best way to gain support. This was the first time, Canadian media has reported on the actual humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, rather than simply calling it a traffic crisis.
These protesters have lives as well, and they have not come together in this weather for fun.
When reading through many of the comments, I was disgusted and appalled by the amount of hatred that was and is continously being shown.
This view of "us" vs. "them" is deeply problematic. Inevitably, all Canadians with the exception of the Aboriginal populations are immigrants. So by simply suggesting the Tamils should be deported back, and calling us hyphenated Canadians and asking whether us Tamils have jobs, or are on welfare shows unwarranted ignorance. Just because we are Tamil or any other nationality, does not make us less Canadian. I am not suprised that similar reactions were expressed when the Aboriginal populations protested in Caledonia a few years ago.

We are going through a historical economic crisis of own threatning Canadian people's way of life and feeding our own families!
Sure we feel bad for what is going own in Sri Lanka...and all across the world...but Canada cannot do anything about this to any effective level anyways...
Get off our streets, stop blocking essential roadways, there are other effective ways to get your voice heard.
Think of all the Canadian families you are impacting right now. An ambulance could be stuck in traffic, a family member may be dieing in a hospital and you`re blocking their way, a man may be driving his pregnant wife to the hospital, a child could be seriously ill getting driven to the hospital...come on...seriously get off our streets you ignorant selfish morons!

I think the majority of posters here aren't saying that Canadians shouldn't be allowed to protest things like the Sri-Lankian/Tamil conflict, oppression of women's rights in the middle east, etc.
I think what we are saying is that they just shouldn't be allowed to hold protests in the middle of highways.
Frankly, the cause for which the protest is occuring isn't the relevant issue here. The manner in which it is occuring is.

Those who choose to come to this country have adopted Canada as their new home. They sworn loyalty and protection to it. Blocking roads, inconveniencing fellow citizens to bring attention to a matter we've little or not control over will only alienate people from the cause.
Tamil protesters sat in front of Parliament Hill for weeks, and nobody complained because it was their rightful thing to do.
However, road blockads, intimidation and complete disregard for fellow Canadians choice to live peacefull in their own country is not tolerable. I'm afraid this incident will take the spotlight away from the murders happening in Sri Lanka.

All hell broke loose when current conservative government proscribes Liberation Tigers while they were negotiating with Sri Lanka government. Eventually by this unbalanced act of Canadian politicians, the majority Sinhalese dominated Sri Lanka government was given green light to wage its genocidal war against minority Tamils.
Only this year already 9500 Tamils were killed including 2000 Tamils yesterday. Another 20 000 were injured.
Conservatives and Liberals should together correct their mistake and push for a immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

I'm sure that if any other country of your origin was in the same position, you would indefinately take a stand.
So, as a voice for all Tamils. The innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka deserve their freedom as well. If this is truly a multicultural country... then supporting this effort for change is necessary before more innocent people are killed!!!

LTTE is not the cause. Brutal Sri Lankan government backed by Extreme Buddhist monks is the only cause. Over 30 years of peaceful attempts by Tamils were ignored and discrimination continued. Armed resistance started only after that. Would Sri Lanka reverse the discriminating policy restricting university education for Tamils? It is the false propaganda of Sri Lankan government which portrayed Tamils freedom fight as terrorism. Millions of foreign aid is being used for this false propaganda.
Over 3000 civilians have died overnight and thousands seriously injured where medicines have been used as weapons of war. Let international media in to see for themselves. Bodies are scattered all over the safe zone and are still being recovered. See the horror in the following links.

If Canada is open to allowing people to immigrate and become citizens then they must accept all that goes with it. The protesters aren't wellfare cases, they are hard working, tax paying Canadians!

I as a Tamil condem the action that has taken place at Gardener, only because it is VERY DANGEROUS!!!
To the rest of the Torontonians please don't be blunt, try to understand where they are coming from. We are the fortunate ones that were able to get out SL, we are merely trying to provide a voice to those who are less fortunate.
DON'T FORGET: We are also CANADIANS; WE also PAY TAXES! WE also feel the same effect that each and every Torontonians feel.
AGAIN Takeing over the Gardener was an unsafe move that was made out of frustration. Hopefully the Toronto Police and OPP will be able to move the crowd off Gardener and back on to College/University.
To my fellow Tamils: The Ontatio Parliament members have agreed to speak to us in the morning. Please talk to your frriends/family to co-operate with the police and move off the Gardener.

I apologize for today's protest that escalated onto the Gardiner and my sincerest apologies to those of you delayed from reaching your destinations this evening.
As a Tamil Canadian, I'm proud to live in a democratic nation that gives us the freedom to protest and the ability to allow us to have our voices heard. Since our protests first began in January of this year, not much has been done to help our cause. Slowly, the truth about the war in Sri Lanka and the attempted genocide by the Singhalese government is coming to surface.
We, the Tamil people of Canada, are a peaceful group. We are tormented daily by the news of what is happening to our families in Sri Lanka. Last night, the Sri Lankan Armed Forces used every kind of lethal weapon such as the internationally banned cluster shells and shells fired from Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers and Cannons to turn the so-called safety zone into a killing field. As a result over 2000 people were killed and many more thousands left injured.
This evening, I listened as the Consulate General of Sri Lanka, repeatedly said "Sri Lanka is a soveirgn country." It is this independence of the SriLankan government from outside authority that has allowed them to begin the process of iradicating all Tamils. This is why Tamil civilians are dying by the thousands. The ban must be lifted on the International Media to enter Sri Lanka and to report what is actually happening to the Tamils. The UN must intervene and peace officials must be sent in to stop this human tragedy.
We live in the 21st century, yet Genocide still exists. I urge all my fellow Canadians to take a stand for humanitarian rights and help us achieve our goal for a peaceful Sri Lanka and preserve what is left of us Tamils.
Thank-you and God Bless!

There are laws in this country and I am sure you are breaking them. These protesters should be arrested and if not citizens of this country they should be deported.
