Thousands of Tamil protesters have left Toronto's Gardiner Expressway, after surging onto the highway to call attention to the escalating civilian death toll in Sri Lanka.

Around midnight, protesters began making their way down an on-ramp as police monitored the situation. Some told ctvtoronto.ca they planned to take their demonstration to Queen's Park.

Reporters and witnesses at the scene said the demonstration was largely peaceful. However, police arrested at least one person and video taken from a nearby highrise showed a bicycle being thrown at officers.

Activists demanded to speak to a representative of Prime Minister Stephen Harper about the civil war in Sri Lanka, but police said that would not be possible. Reports say the protesters agreed to leave the area because the Liberal party said it would address their concerns in Parliament.

Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters late Sunday it was an "unlawful and unsafe" protest, and the RCMP and the OPP were assisting. He said protesters gave no indication they were planning to take to the Gardiner.

Blair also said he was extremely concerned about the presence of children at the protest and said the elevated highway itself was very dangerous for people on foot.

"I'm very concerned about the safety of children, I think it's an extremely dangerous situation to put children on the front line of a protest in that way, I think it puts them at tremendous risk," he said.

Ghormy Theva, a protester on the Gardiner, told CTV Newsnet Sunday evening that demonstrations would continue until "definite" action was taken by the Canadian government.

At one point, more than 100 Toronto police were on the scene and had set up a perimeter on the highway. Vehicular traffic was severely backlogged on the Gardiner, a major thoroughfare in the city.

Officers on the scene were reportedly armed with tear gas, and police described the protesters as "uncooperative."

The national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress. David Poopalapillai, told CTV Newsnet Sunday that "desperate times call for desperate action."

But he said he was taken "off-guard" by Sunday's protest and said recognized the inconvenience it caused to motorists.

A second protest shut down the University Ave. and College St. intersection.

The protesters rallied after international news agencies reported nearly 400 civilians were killed during an overnight artillery bombardment. The Sri Lankan military is denying launching the assault that killed 378 civilians and wounded about 1,100.

Thousands are fleeing Sri Lanka's war zone as tensions between the military and Tamil Tiger rebels escalate.

Reports are hard to confirm because of a ban on journalists and aid workers in the war zone. Late Sunday, protesters disputed the death toll from the artillery bombardment, saying it was in the thousands.

The demonstrators protested in Toronto yesterday afternoon as well, marching through the city and ending up on the lawns of Queen's Park.

On Sunday, about 2,000 Toronto Tamils crowded several streets, making their way in front of the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue.

Are these people stubborn or just stupid or both?

What do they think the Canadian government has the power to do? The UN and Canada has asked for a ceasefire.

Canada is NOT going to invade Sri Lanka to save a group that labels it a terrorist organization! What's next invading Iraq to stop the persecution of Al-Qaeda members there?

Maybe it's time they were deported back. It's not Canada's fight, we are not the fix-it-all nation they are trying to use us for. Don't bring your wars to Canada.

Because they want to help those who are being slaughtered in Sri Lanka, I will always support their cause. for waving the flag, promoting violence and thinking the tigers can solve everyone's problems, i will never protest with them. Please stop attracting negative attention and please start caring about the thousands of people who have died.

The number of those dead is rising sharply every day, hour, minute.
Care about those people and please push through whatever barriers exist to get aid to the civilians.

It's my wife's last day at work for the week and she's still not home due to the traffic (it's been over 2 hours). I don't think this would make her think positively about the Tamil cause right now. She'd probably rather forget about the whole thing.

This is truly pathetic on the part of the Tamil supporters...endangering children and the elderly by charging up and onto a major highway? To all the human rights "supporters" out there, why are you so selective as to whose rights you "support"? You are just like any other protestors and looking for a "flavour-of-the-week" cause to champion. No one is happy about what is happening in Sri Lanka but do not forget the the LTTE (they ARE terrorists) do not have clean hands either.

Where is the Ontario Government (Toronto has none) leadership? What a disgrace to let the manipulated non-Canadians disrupt OUR way of life in such a way. Trudeau has been gone for years so let's now get back to the real world of being Canadians. If you do not agree with the Canadian way of life then catch the next boat but do not attempt to continue to force your misbegotten beliefs on our once proven stable government and society. Step up McGuinty and put Miller on a leash.

This is ridiculous that a small radical group of people are disturbing peace in a city of Toronto. Closing a major Highway is dangerous for the drivers as those who are responsible for it. I hope that the people responsible for those actions will be prosecuted.

Nancy - Government exclusive use of force.
said

Government shall have the exclusive use of force in society. Tamil Tigers need to simply law down their arms and support the democratically elected Government.
Most Tamils were brought in from India at one time to work plantation and are not native to the Sir Lanka but they want thier own homeland.
They should be protesting the terrorist that claim to represent them, not the government that is protecting a civilian population that has suffered attacks too many times.
The terrorists refuse to wear a uniform and hide behind kids while shooting, you tell me who is to blame.

Bring out the tear gas.
This is not Canada's fight. Not to take away from the atrocities that are happening over there being committed by both sides, but our government has branded the Tamil Tigers a terrorist organization - and now people flying their flag are allowed to close down major roads and thoroughfare over a conflict that Canada has no part in?
Gas 'em and book 'em

They would serve the plight of thier fellows better by NOT disrupting the peace of thier adopted country. . I'm sick and tired of hearing about them blocking traffic and disrupting our cities, both Ottawa and Toronto, and would be appreciative if they would all go back to Sri Lanka and fight thier battles there.
Do any of them have jobs here, or are they all on welfare or what?
Canada has become a haven for these people who run away from the troubles of thier native land and then disrupt our peace or try to instill thier beliefs and customs on us.
Canada has no business in the political problems of Sri Lanka or any other country, and we should not put up with these protests.

Why block a highway? It just does not make sense and brings shame to the Tamil community. I have no sympathy for any cause that use senseless tactics - the city should impose major charges on the leaders of the protesters. Perhaps, a few weeks in Don jail with a multi-thousand dollar fine will make the leaders realize that this is not the way to get their message across. It seems like they are behaving exactly like the people that they are protesting against.

In the end, the protesters have set back their cause.

Shame, shame, shame on them!

I've read the comments posted on both this and the cp24 website and all I can think is how ignorant and selfish my fellow Torontonians are sounding. You're crying about being inconvenienced by some protests. These peoples families are being raped and killed. Little kids are being blown up in the streets. It's ethnic cleansing and just as bad as Hitler. Were people in Toronto complaining about the Jewish protesters during WW2? Stop being so selfish and start supporting these people so that maybe our Government will agree to do more than just "look into it."

I suppose most of the people that have commented today would have found Martin Luther King Jr.'s marches an inconvenience to traffic. We should support these people because they are bringing to our attention an important humanitarian crisis, in a non-violent manner. Everyone, let's be patient! Give peace a chance.

Yes, our country can not stop this war like turning on and off a light switch. I dont mind a flag wave here and there from different groups wanting to express their say, but we must draw a line somewhere. Its getting to a point where if you want to protest against a gov. you fled from, please get on a plane, fly back from where you immigrated from and confront your old gov. in person. Stop bothering the rest of us with your road blocks etc. The only thing I will then support here is mass arrest.

I find it funny that these protestors are viewed as foreigners and we "Canadians" want them to leave "our" country. And as well this, if it doesn't concern us, then its not our problem mentality. It is unfair to say that Canada should not care about the situation in Sri Lanka - because Canada listed LTTE as a terrorist organization. The indirect result is the Sri Lankan government killing innocent civilians. The Canadian government is indirectly supporting this war. Thus, it is time that Canada admits that it has made a huge mistake and take immediate action.

Sure, Canada is a peacekeeping country, that doesn't mean that you can block our highways and DEMAND that we save a terrorist organization responsible for the death of many the recruitment of child soldiers, and genocide from the Sri Lankan government.

This has now turned into a problem. Understanding the problems in their own country is one thing. But effecting lives of the average person that can't do anything about the situation in THIS country is another.

I hope to god that this mothers day is not the last one for somebody stuck in traffic.
Or even worse a Mother, Father son or daughter is given a chance to live by being able to get to hospital in time is something horrible happens.

Protesting is a way to make people aware of the problem.

This is now a hostage situation which by the way is a act of terrorism.

It seems like is it easy for all these people who wrote these postings to simply write this. But how about putting your two little feet in the shoes of those who are suffering and stop being selfish because you got you easy by living in Canada? If the civilans that were killed were your family members, I could be more than certain that you would be down at the protest. I guess no one would understand unless they were in the position of these people. So you ask what can government can do? Obviously the 250,000 tamils in Toronto obviously have faith in the gov't so why don't you people stop complaining, being selfish and do something about it and help those in need? I guess thats not a thought to you guys because it was all selfish people that wrote these comments.

I understand their frustrations and all, 3000 people dead in 24 hours is no laughing matter. Look at the world response from 9/11 when a similar number of people were killed by terrorists. Everyone comments that Canada should not get involved. However, it did get involved when it labeled the LTTE as a terrorist group. Now why don't they apply the same label to the government? Both sides seem to have their hands dirty in this conflict. That said, blocking off a highway is no way to be getting support.

Citizen

This demonstration was not meant to cause any inconveniences to anyone but to bring awareness and urge the Canadian government to intervene and bring peace in Sri Lanka. Yesterday (Saturday) the massive demonstration was peaceful but when all these people went home the news that they got was almost 3,000 innocent civilians were slaughtered by the Sri Lankan government. For those people who think that LTTE is a terrorist organization and they can’t solve the Tamil’s issue, all I have to say is that Hon Nelson Mandela was listed as a terrorist and later a Nobel Prize winner in 1993. LTTE is the only effective and honest organization to bring a solution to the Tamil’s plight.

Sorry for the inconveniences caused… please help the Tamils in Sri Lanka. They are human too!

It's about time something serious is done about these people who disrupt the lives
of law abiding citizens. You have to ask how many of these people were born in Canada. Those that were not, I'm sure we could raise enough funds for them to return home to look after things there. The other question is, how many of these people have jobs and
if not, are we supporting them. They're costing us a fortune with their nonsence.

Are you guys insane? Did you know that just today 3000 people died today and another 3000 people injured. The Tamils don't have food or water or any route to escape! Why is Canada fighting in the Afghanistan war? So if Canada wasn't a peacemaking country no one would ask for help. Also why shouldn't we care about our families back at home? It's our families! We know the pain not you guys! Also don't believe the lies people tell you on the news about Sri Lanka's government. The reason why LTTE is named a terrorist organization is because we killed a prime minister? Just because one Tamil killed a Prime Minister (who was a person who allowed other men to rape innocent Tamil girls, killed innocent men by taking them away from their families and telling their families that those guys are going to a safe place where they won't be hurt) all the LTTE people are not terrorists!... LTTE is only there because the Sinhalese government treated us minority Tamil people as animals. Tamils rebelled and are only fighting for needed human rights. What's wrong with that? We get killed asking to be treated equal as human beings? Is that what happened when women fought for their rights back in the day? What is this? INJUSTICE!!!

Zachary of Ottawa

I love how many racist people comment here. All you care about is driving, and deporting anyone who isn't ethnically White. We can't even stand up for the rights of our own Aboriginal people and help relieve the poverty gap between our two worlds.

When it comes to Tamil-Canadians, we treat them like dirt and accuse their political agenda of wanting to aid the rebels. Where do you get your misinformation? The Tamils are protesting against the genocide in Sri Lanka, about the civilians who are dying. They are opposed just as much to what the rebels are doing as to what the government is doing. And all we can observe is that very small minority of people who actually support the Tigers, and emphasize as if 'all' Tamils are rebels. Quebec anyone? During the October Crisis, we had an entire army brought in, when there was only maybe 30 active members in the FLQ. Just like the Tamil-Canadians want for their people and families back home, the Québécois desired self-autonomy and freedom.

What can Canada do? As a nation, Canada, moreso than the United Nations, can put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to allow aid workers to bring relief, support, food, and aid to the refugees. We can pressure the government to allow reporters in, in order to lift the censorship and evaluate the extent of the situation. No one mentioned anything about invading; we can barely even take care of a fraction of Afghanistan, but we can help the general population by bringing medical supplies and food, which the Sri Lankan government forbids.

its pretty sad that the fellow toronto people complain about an extra two hours to get home. When the families of these people might not necessarily make it home. Its not like their attacking people outside, or their asking for military support, all they ask for is more pressure upon Canada to enforce a ceasefire. If you think about it everyone calls tamils terrorrists, and that their the ones attacking their own civilians, yet they ask for the media to come in and the Sri Lankan government is banning the media. Think about whos hiding a secret. Yesterday 1122 people had died in Sri Lanka due to bombing at a tamil civilian city, dont you people find yourself pathetic for complaining about 2 hrs wait in traffic in comparison to what thse people have lost or gone through. Imagine how you would feel if Toronto was bombed, and your family was dying, would you be mad if your family in another nation was trying to protest in an attempt to save you. Think about it people, instead of thinking about the 2 hours wait, think about the 300 kids who lost their lives yesterday, imagine that was your family.

Steps to resolve:

1) Find all the children in the crowd and take them into protective custody.

2) Inform the protesters that they are blocking a major highway, and have 5 minutes to cease and desist or face arrest.

3) Wait 5 minutes.

4) Deploy water guns and tear gas to break up the crowd.

5) Begin mass arrests for anyone who remains on the highway.

They have done many protests over the several few months. What have they achieved, other than to show their support for a terrorist organization? Why would anyone listen to them when they are waving flags identified with a notorious terrorist organization? This is all part of LTTE propaganda. Have you noticed that all the blame has been put on the Sri Lankan government, while nothing has been revealed about the LTTE? Have you seen the footage of Tamil civilians fleeing from LTTE controlled areas into army controlled areas? Have you seen videos of the LTTE shooting these fleeing civilians?
A terrorist, whether it be the Taliban or the LTTE, is a terrorist. And terrorism is a issue that should not only concern Sri Lankans, but rather the world.
The accusation of 300 and some people killed by the Sri Lankan army came from Tamilnet, which is a pro-LTTE website!!!!

This has just gone to far. It is unacceptable to be using tactics that exploit and endanger children to 'make a point'not to mention the shutting down of one of the main arteries to our city restricting the flow of traffic for both emergency and personal use.
The unrealistic expectation of the protestors to have the Canadian government intervene in the policies of another nation is ridiculous, each state has its own autonomy and if the Tamils want change they should look to the government of Sri Lanka and not Canada. Canada has condemned the deaths on both sides, this is a civil war and not the problem of our peaceful country.

Drawing attention to the issue's is acceptable, but last I mchecked they do not issue permits to hold protests on our highways. We accepted them in this country, and in return they agreed to obey and uphold the laws of our country. The police have turned a blind eye to these protesters, with the hope the situation does not escalate into violence. Time to enforce the laws, as this group does not have respect for the country that has given shelter to them.

The LTTE is a terrorist group. But according to the UN the Sri Lankan government has banned all media and NGOs from entering the war zone and has killed close to 8000 civilians in just the last 3 months under the pretext of a war on terror. This is a genocide. A government has a responsibility to protect its civilians, not kill them. This is a war without witnesses. Canada should use its weight as a peace keeper and pressure the UN to enact the "Responsibility to Protect" which it helped pioneer. Canada should also recall the Canadian ambassador to Sri Lanka.

As others have said on this board, this is not Canada's fight.

We are already heavily engaged in another foreign military venture halfway across the world (Afghanistan) and are in the midst of a recession. There is neither the will nor the resources in this country for another costly international humanitarian operation.

So with that said, I believe that the only thing these protests are accomplishing is turning the vast majority of the city (and the country for that matter) against the protestors.

These idiots are lucky no-one was killed by them running onto major road-ways, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a motorist charged for hitting one of them, instead of them being charged for obstruction along with several other things they should now be charged with - including any accidents or heart attacks caused by the traffic pile-ups and aggravation of millions of motorists. Get them on the pollution caused by a million idling cars too. They protest for a lost terrorist cause that even moderate Tamils in Sri Lanka are against, and Canadians recognize this fact. Arrest them all when they pull these terrorist stunts. One more good reason the Gardiner exists, however - they are all trapped there now. Roll up the paddy-wagons.

Being a Canadian Tamil myself, I do sympathize with Torontonians and their many inconveniences stemming from the protest on the Gardener. We do realize today is Mother's Day, it's a Sunday and no one would like to be stuck in traffic.

However, before jumping to conclusions and suggesting that people should be forceably removed. Please take a moment to do impartial research on the issue, before making harsh comments. Although, I do agree this protest may not be the best way to gain support. This was the first time, Canadian media has reported on the actual humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, rather than simply calling it a traffic crisis.
These protesters have lives as well, and they have not come together in this weather for fun.

When reading through many of the comments, I was disgusted and appalled by the amount of hatred that was and is continously being shown.

This view of "us" vs. "them" is deeply problematic. Inevitably, all Canadians with the exception of the Aboriginal populations are immigrants. So by simply suggesting the Tamils should be deported back, and calling us hyphenated Canadians and asking whether us Tamils have jobs, or are on welfare shows unwarranted ignorance. Just because we are Tamil or any other nationality, does not make us less Canadian. I am not suprised that similar reactions were expressed when the Aboriginal populations protested in Caledonia a few years ago.

So basically according to the comments I've read here: people in Canada shouldn't be allowed to protest events happening in other countries. No protesting of women's rights in the Middle East, of genocides in Africa, or the oppression of people under a harsh regime.

I can't believe how racist some of the comments that people have written are. Unless you're Native Indian, I don't believe that you have the right to tell people to go back home as you yourselves are from a line of immigrants. Most of the protestors are Canadian citizens and contribute as much to our society as the rest of us.

I agree that this is probably not the best way to carry out a protest, but let's be reasonable in expressing our frustrations.

The Tamil Tigers are expressing their anger at the genocide going on in their home country. That is outrageous and as long as it is a peaceful protest, they should bew allowed to voice their negativity to the genocide.

We live in a wonderful country where multi-ethnic Canadian citizens may protest peacefully without percecution. Good on the Tamils!!!

This is now beyond a joke! I *know* we live in a country where you have a right to free speech and protest, however, this does NOT mean that you can close down a major highway with your protest.

The police should move in and use reasonable force to remove the people. If it means mass arrests, so be it.

They don't seem to "get" that all they are doing is seriously annoying those who live and work in downtown Toronto. What little sympathy I may have had for their cause has been eradicated.

What will it take for the Canadian government (and so many of the posters of such mean spirited and thinly veiled xenophobic comments on this list) to bring Canada back to being a world leader for peace? Hundreds of thousands of Canadians have family in Sri Lanka. Tamil civilians have been lured into no-fire zones only to be attacked by the Sri Lankan government. yesterday more reports of hundreds to thousands of Tamil civilians killed. Canada can and should be rallying international support for a meaningful ceasefire. Also, I challenge those hate-mongering posters on this forum who are using dozens of pseudonyms, to stop hiding behind false identities and associate their real names to their ludicrous rants.

The majority of our forces are in the middle east fighting a war.

We are going through a historical economic crisis of own threatning Canadian people's way of life and feeding our own families!

Sure we feel bad for what is going own in Sri Lanka...and all across the world...but Canada cannot do anything about this to any effective level anyways...

Get off our streets, stop blocking essential roadways, there are other effective ways to get your voice heard.

Think of all the Canadian families you are impacting right now. An ambulance could be stuck in traffic, a family member may be dieing in a hospital and you`re blocking their way, a man may be driving his pregnant wife to the hospital, a child could be seriously ill getting driven to the hospital...come on...seriously get off our streets you ignorant selfish morons!

I too was inconvenienced this evening coming home because of the protest (I live right in front of the Gardiner) but my minor inconvenience does not compare to the suffering of 400 recent deaths in Sri Lanka. I realize that this is becoming an nuisance for many Torontonians. I don't agree with blocking the Gardiner Expressway. But the reason why the Tamil people are doing this is because we've been doing many peaceful protests where it would not interfere with daily city life, but our message is not getting enough attention, or atleast reach the parliament hill for a ceasefire. Many of our parents, relatives, children are being killed in the thousands every single day...as mentioned by many, as many as 2000 people have been killed and injured last night for mother's day. This is an total outrage.

As for those people that are being racist and ignorant, yes tamil people have jobs and we pay our taxes just like as you do. And if you deport us, you will see us on the death list as well, would that make you happy?
We are just trying our best to do whatever we can to save the people over there, that is all we ask. We appreciate your support.

We are protesting because we want all our cousins and parents to LIVE. We tamil people have been waiting too long for Canada to take action. It's already been at least 31 years of fighting and loss. How else are we supposed to bring awareness and force the Canadian government to do anything. The government can't just think that we'll forget about the war. The sooner the government does something about the war, the sooner we will leave all you Canadians to live freely. We will just continue to spread our sadness and anger for the war until the government does something. If you Canadians are tired of us protesting, help us to end the war so everyone can live in peace.

I understand they want to protest to bring more attention to the conflict. However, the media has covered the situation in Sri Lanka as well as the protests here in the Canada. To Matthew,

I think the majority of posters here aren't saying that Canadians shouldn't be allowed to protest things like the Sri-Lankian/Tamil conflict, oppression of women's rights in the middle east, etc.

I think what we are saying is that they just shouldn't be allowed to hold protests in the middle of highways.

Frankly, the cause for which the protest is occuring isn't the relevant issue here. The manner in which it is occuring is.

While we all sympathy and stand against the atrocities committed in Sri Lanka. It is important for people to distinguish between their right to voice their opinion and the illegal protest occurred in Toronto today.

Those who choose to come to this country have adopted Canada as their new home. They sworn loyalty and protection to it. Blocking roads, inconveniencing fellow citizens to bring attention to a matter we've little or not control over will only alienate people from the cause.

Tamil protesters sat in front of Parliament Hill for weeks, and nobody complained because it was their rightful thing to do.

However, road blockads, intimidation and complete disregard for fellow Canadians choice to live peacefull in their own country is not tolerable. I'm afraid this incident will take the spotlight away from the murders happening in Sri Lanka.

Conservatives, Liberals should have deal with Tamils long before and addressed their grievance. Instead both played hide and seek while Tamil’s relatives and friends were killed in larger numbers every day. It is the failure in part of both these political parties addressing more than 400K fellow Canadians who voted and send them for Ottawa.
All hell broke loose when current conservative government proscribes Liberation Tigers while they were negotiating with Sri Lanka government. Eventually by this unbalanced act of Canadian politicians, the majority Sinhalese dominated Sri Lanka government was given green light to wage its genocidal war against minority Tamils.
Only this year already 9500 Tamils were killed including 2000 Tamils yesterday. Another 20 000 were injured.
Conservatives and Liberals should together correct their mistake and push for a immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

I'm sure that if any other country of your origin was in the same position, you would indefinately take a stand.

People who are in favour of this style of protest: how would this be different from any other illegal act? What if, for example, to get media attention for a worthy cause, someone were to take a school full of children hostage? One of the many reasons why it is illegal in Canada to block a major highway, is related to the fact that emergency vehicles need to use them. You know, the ones that are there to save peoples lives? The vast majority of aid workers have been refused access to the euphemistically labelled “no-fire zones”, and journalists have been completely denied entry. The time has come for not only peace, but also prosperity and social justice for this majestic island and all who inhabit it.

The ability to participate in a lawful demonstration and freedom of speech are rights in Canadian society. As such, we have areas, such as Queen's Park and Nathan Phillips Square, where people can congregate and hold demonstrations and rallys. The Tamil community has instead chosen to disrupt the entire city of Toronto multiple times, each one more agrivating than the last. While the average citizen may have shown compassion in the beginning, that feeling has now turned to contempt for the protestors. Blocking the Gardiner Expressway should be viewed as an unlawful protest, and the Police should act as such.

Severe action is needed by the Canadian government immediately. Recall Canadian ambassador to Sri Lanka as done by Sweden. Any aid must be directly given to international NGOs such as ICRC. Close the Sri Lankan embassy in Canada. Force UN to intervene.
LTTE is not the cause. Brutal Sri Lankan government backed by Extreme Buddhist monks is the only cause. Over 30 years of peaceful attempts by Tamils were ignored and discrimination continued. Armed resistance started only after that. Would Sri Lanka reverse the discriminating policy restricting university education for Tamils? It is the false propaganda of Sri Lankan government which portrayed Tamils freedom fight as terrorism. Millions of foreign aid is being used for this false propaganda.
Over 3000 civilians have died overnight and thousands seriously injured where medicines have been used as weapons of war. Let international media in to see for themselves. Bodies are scattered all over the safe zone and are still being recovered. See the horror in the following links.

I as a Tamil condem the action that has taken place at Gardener, only because it is VERY DANGEROUS!!!
To the rest of the Torontonians please don't be blunt, try to understand where they are coming from. We are the fortunate ones that were able to get out SL, we are merely trying to provide a voice to those who are less fortunate.
DON'T FORGET: We are also CANADIANS; WE also PAY TAXES! WE also feel the same effect that each and every Torontonians feel.
AGAIN Takeing over the Gardener was an unsafe move that was made out of frustration. Hopefully the Toronto Police and OPP will be able to move the crowd off Gardener and back on to College/University.

I am tamil, but I don't support this. The whole point of protesting was to promote awareness for the war back home. But blocking highways and causing serious trouble is not the way to do this. This has caused so much negativity, that tamil people are not getting the support that was wanted when the protests started. There has to be more acceptable ways of making a point heard. By causing inconviences, more people are getting fed up with the protests instead of supporting it, which was what was wanted in the first place. Go back to the peaceful, cooperative protest that happened a few months ago to gain more support.

My fellow Torontonians,

I apologize for today's protest that escalated onto the Gardiner and my sincerest apologies to those of you delayed from reaching your destinations this evening.

As a Tamil Canadian, I'm proud to live in a democratic nation that gives us the freedom to protest and the ability to allow us to have our voices heard. Since our protests first began in January of this year, not much has been done to help our cause. Slowly, the truth about the war in Sri Lanka and the attempted genocide by the Singhalese government is coming to surface.

We, the Tamil people of Canada, are a peaceful group. We are tormented daily by the news of what is happening to our families in Sri Lanka. Last night, the Sri Lankan Armed Forces used every kind of lethal weapon such as the internationally banned cluster shells and shells fired from Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers and Cannons to turn the so-called safety zone into a killing field. As a result over 2000 people were killed and many more thousands left injured.

This evening, I listened as the Consulate General of Sri Lanka, repeatedly said "Sri Lanka is a soveirgn country." It is this independence of the SriLankan government from outside authority that has allowed them to begin the process of iradicating all Tamils. This is why Tamil civilians are dying by the thousands. The ban must be lifted on the International Media to enter Sri Lanka and to report what is actually happening to the Tamils. The UN must intervene and peace officials must be sent in to stop this human tragedy.

We live in the 21st century, yet Genocide still exists. I urge all my fellow Canadians to take a stand for humanitarian rights and help us achieve our goal for a peaceful Sri Lanka and preserve what is left of us Tamils.

Thank-you and God Bless!

Tamils has the right to demand the Canadian PM to take action. He has Tamils blood in his hand. He need to answer for the crime of 3075 people killed in one night (May 09, 09) by the Sri Lankan government which is supported by current Canadian Government.
Current Canadian Government interfered in Sri Lankan affairs by banning democratic Tamil voice from Canada. One side ban supports the other side. This means the current Canadian Government supported the Sri Lankan Government Genocide

If these people are complaining about their "homeland", why don't they go "home" and do something about it?

It's moments like these that I'll remember the next time the world curses the West for "meddling" in others' business.

If the United Nations was created to stop GENOCIDES why haven't they done anything? What has to happen in order for this to be categorized as a GENOCIDE? Do more innocent people have to die? Should the families of these people in Canada suffer due to their deaths? When has it ever been okay to stand by as innocent children and people are killed, raped and murdered. CANADA...do something!

Don't care what problem these people think they have.
They chose to leave a country and come to this one. If you want to protest about something in your last country go back there and protest because this is Canada and we I don't care about your problems - I have enough of my own paying my taxes and obeying the laws of my country. There are laws in this country and I am sure you are breaking them. These protesters should be arrested and if not citizens of this country they should be deported. If they are Canadian citizens then they must be charged and prosecuted under Canadian law.
I have no respect for people who come into my country and disrespect our laws. You didn't like your last country and now you wish to disrupt things here. We should not have to tolerate individuals who refuse to respect Canada.

Clear the road! The police should be sent in IMMEDIATELY to clear these people off the Gardiner. They should arrest the ringleaders as well as anyone who resists being removed. The organizations behind the protest should also face legal consequences for their actions. They have no right to hold the entire city hostage like this. This issue has nothing to do with Canada, nothing to do with Canadians and there is no reason for them to protest in Canada over it. Let them go to Sri Lanka and protest. The idea that somehow inconveniencing thousands of people in Toronto will help their cause is utterly ridiculous. Canadians don't give a darn about the 30 year old civil war STARTED BY THE TAMIL TIGERS but we sure as hell don't like being kept from our jobs and places of business because of protesters blocking a highway.

Even though some of the comments on here may be considered "racist", I have to agree with alot of them. I'm all for immigration (within reason) as my family immigrated to Canada after WW2 from Europe. However, I've noticed that Canadian culture has gradually deteriorated, not from immigration itself, but from immigrants who come to Canada and expect everyone to cater to their way of life from their native country. It's good to be proud of your heritage, but if you come to Canada, you should adapt to Canadian society. I think that Canadian society was much stronger back in the early stages of Canadian history, because people actually had to contribute in order for Canada to grow. Now that Canada is one of the best countries to live in, many people come to use it as a hotel. Also, people seem to think that Toronto=Canada. While Toronto is very multicultural, most of Canada is not, and many of the comment posters do not come from multicultural cities.

I don't think these commentators will say anything about traffic if the maple leaves won the stanley cup and people ended up blocking the gardner.

I am amazed at how ignorant and misinformed some of your Torontonians are. If Canada can't interfere in this issue then what use is Canada at all ? What the hell is Canada doing in Afghanistan then ? that is America's war ! Canadians get out of Afghanistan if you folks don't want to help Tamil Canadians.

It's time Canada stops being a boring, cold, hockey nation and step up and show the world that they too can stand for atrocities and crimes against humanity. Besides you don't need a super power tag like the Yanks for that.
