An injection for men appears to be just as effective at preventing pregnancy as the birth control pill, finds new research that could revolutionize contraception.

In testing in China, only one man in 100 fathered a child while on the injections, the study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports.

The contraceptive is a form of testosterone that is injected into the buttocks once a month. It works by temporarily blocking sperm production.

Chinese researchers injected 1,045 healthy Chinese men aged 20 to 45 years with a 500 mg of testosterone undecanoate in oil, once a month for 24 months. All of the study participants had had at least one child and all their female partners, aged 18 and 38 years, also had normal reproductive function.

They found the contraceptive was almost 99 per cent effective, with a failure rate of only 1.1 per 100 men.

There were no serious side effected reported in any of the men, unlike previous studies on hormonal male contraceptive. Some of the side effects of those formulations have been mood swings and a lowered sex drive.

In all but two of the men in this study, reproductive function returned to normal range within six months of stopping the injections.

"For couples who cannot, or prefer not to use only female-oriented contraception, options have been limited to vasectomy, condom and withdrawal," said Dr. Yi-Qun Gu, of the National Research Institute for Family Planning in Beijing, China.

"Our study shows a male hormonal contraceptive regimen may be a potential, novel and workable alternative."

It should be noted though that almost a third of the 1,045 men in the 30-month trial did not complete the study. No reason was given.

Gu says while the results of this trial are encouraging, more long-term testing needs to be done on the safety of the regimen, with a focus on cardiovascular, prostate and behavioral safety.

Gu said if further tests proved successful, the treatment could become widely available in five years.

i wonder how much of an impact this will have on 'safe-sex'?

Woo Hoo! Finally! How many years has this been in the works?
A lot of women don't relish going for regular injections and I imagine lots of them would stop going back for Depo shots if they were monthly. Maybe the reason why some men didn't complete the study was because some dudes didn't like the monthly shots. Also - don't men hate going to the doctor? just kidding.
Hopefully, this all pans out. It would be nice to have someone else share this responsibility. Especially if it doesn't turn them into a raging b*tch like birth control pills do to me!

Good luck getting men to take it.

No different than the pill for women...people still need to use common sense.

I wonder how that works: I mean the man that goes on this obviously doesn't want a child. The woman needs to know this but also approve her not taking the pill to test fully the efficiency of this injection...but if they don't a child, are they really going to take a chance? I mean are women really not going to take the pill for the whole duration not knowing if this experimental injection is going to work and risk having a child if they were not willing to do so to begin with?

I wonder how many men who would prefer not to father a child might obtain this injection without their spouse/girlfriend's knowledge???

I don't think it will impact "safe sex" any more than the female shot or pill version does. Safer sex is a choice regardless of what form of contraceptives one does or does not use.

And if you're in a monogamous relationship, then it shouldn't matter who uses the birth control and if there is an option for males as well as females then to me it would be a double-protection factor!

I would be interested to see what the rate of pregnancy would be when this injection is used in conjunction with female contraceptives as well...

This is cool..
But with all do respect to men..We sometimes have a hard time to have men do the dishes or sweep the floor..This is another chore for the ladies to make sure they go for the needle...

I'll take the shot once a month, NO PROBLEM

It is about time!
For the first time the decision to have a child can be mutually decided.
No more entrapments by women using children as weapons or to try and keep a man around.
I know if I was younger and not trying to get my girlfriend pregnant I would have taken this shot.
It is always a concern that a girlfriend would try and trap a man with a ACIDENTAL pregnancy.
I know a lot of men who would line up for this. Now there will be no excuse for men and women to have an accident if they both take the responsibility!

A needle a day WILL NOT keep the sexually transmitted "deadly" diseases away such as HIV/AIDS. Sorry to burst your bubble and give you a reality check.

Is a half hours worth of lusty fun worth a lifetime of constant anxiety and problems having to medicate on a daily basis just to stay alive?

What woman would trust the man when it comes to birth control. "nah baby I don't need a condom I get monthly shots". It's even more believable then "I'll pull out"

Its about time!! As already observed by other posters, this should finally level the field.
And to answer "Nancy in AB" There might be a significant number - this will put a level of uncertainty on women on a par with what men have faced. It will no longer be an ultimately female choice. coupled with DNA testing this should allow the reproductive choice to be a shared prerogative as opposed to a shared responsibility.

Too late for me! I think I would have been better off if I'd never been able. Support is a never ending story that an injection can't resolve.

Joe: If you do not want kids, that is one thing, get the injection and no worries, but let your partner know. Do not pretend to be interested in children.....That is no better than a woman swearing she is on the pill, but gets pregnant by 'accident'. I can not believe that humans can be this mean and malicious with people they supposedly care for......

To Nancy in AB and any one else that thinks this is not a good idea.
If the man is deceiving his partner in this manner or any manner then I would say it is time to re-think the relationship, not the method of contraceptive.

To GM: What woman should trust a man to the birth control? Unfortunately there's many women out there who have manipulated unsuspecting men with getting pregnant "by accident". It's the oldest trick in the book. I think this is great for men.

Guessing from these comments most men view children as a burden and women as the bearers of the burdens. How unfortunate. Children are not a never ending amount of support and if men don't wish to father one then they should keep it in their pants.

Or perhaps an alternative solution is to enter into long term relationships with a woman who you trust and who trusts you. Decide together your views on children and life.

Then when she gets pregnant you can both be happy.

Or you can continue to participate in meaningless one night stands and pay support.

Well said Kim Jerome....

I think male contraception is FINE, better than FINE. But be honest with your partner.

My last relationship was 7 years long, I took my pill EVERY day, there were no problems, and not once was there a pregnancy test. I was HONEST and with someone who TRUSTED me because he should!

Interesting article, but what i find more interesting is what female posters think of men in general.
Guys it nice to know that we are still deceitful lowlifes.
A pill, injection or an old fashion condom doesn't change a thing.
I have had a vasectomy for some time now. There is no threat of suport payments or vamps trying for a free ride here. I'm not trying to pigeon hole all women. But we have all run into a few in our travels

funny how anyone would want their significant other to be irratable, moody, gain weight and have a lower sex drive. That is what articificial birth control does. Its un-natural.

Chelsea

any ladies out there also able to make a lenghty list on the excuses men have given to NOT use condoms? one would assume the list of excuses will grow with this new type of birth control designed just for men. Especially since they will have to take time away from their oh so busy lives to get this shot monthly. good idea in theory, but hopefully they can make it last longer then a month per shot.

also, accidental pregnancies being only a females fault? who are you trying to kid, it takes two to tango. if you, as a man, do not want kids, control your own swimmers. condoms are a great invention for that.

So if I take this shot in the butt, my sex drive may be lowered, therefore I may feel like NOT having sex which is the complete opposite of why I'm taking this shot. Funny! And then I'll be moody as all heck cause I just increased my testosterone levels and no one will have sex with me cause I'm grumpy! Forget contraception, this is involuntary, chemically induced celibacy! LOL

Judging from the content of many of the mainly male posters I am left wishing there was an injection available for male maturity....or better yet, male responsibility??

Oh and just to clarify for a previous poster...the injection is in the butt, right beside the brain.

Great idea, now both can make sure no accidental babies come! The injection is on the buttocks, like the female contraceptive shot, it needs to be applied in a muscular area.

To Shaun: The woman is the one that give birth, change diapers, breath feed them, bath them. Clean the house, take of the kids...so if you really think man do too much stuff, it's because you are blind or you are alone.

Just goes to show how incompetent many people are even in this thread for example. Some of you couldn't even read the information provided and asked questions about where the shot was given or how often it was administered when it clearly stated in the buttocks and once a month.

Also a tiny shot once a month in the buttock is nothing, you won't even feel it after 2-3 months, it feels like a pinch for about a fraction of a second.

I would have no issues going for something like this to do my part in making sure I avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

Just hit up your local gym. They just used injectible testosterone with a long ester. You go on "testosterone replacement therapy" basically, and the bonus is, you stop producing sperm, and also reduce your natural testosterone production. They were also trying to do this with MENT - which is MethlyEthylNorTestosterone if I remember correctly. Wonder what happened with MENT anyhow?
