Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff kicked off his party's convention in Vancouver Thursday by simultaneously thanking and slamming his Tory foes.
After all, it was Prime Minister Stephen Harper's risky partisan brinkmanship last fall which marked a turnaround for the Liberals after almost three years in the political wilderness.
"We have a unified party, we have a party out of debt and we have a party basically ready to fight an election," Ignatieff said at a press conference on Thursday.
"And, again, who would have thunk it? Who would've thought that this would be the result. And some of the credit, ironically enough, has to go to my chief adversary, Mr. Stephen Harper."
Last fall, Harper attempted to end public subsidies for political parties, which ignited a fierce response from the opposition and nearly resulted in the Tory's overthrow at the hands of a Liberal - NDP coalition, backed by the Bloc Quebecois.
Not long after the historic showdown, Stephane Dion quit as leader and Ignatieff took the party's helm -- a move which bypassed a potentially divisive leadership race and required rivals Bob Rae and Dominic LeBlanc to douse their leadership aspirations and step aside.
Since then, polls have tracked a startling reversal for the Liberals. In Quebec, a recent poll suggested that the Grits are now in front of the Bloc Quebecois for the first time in half a decade.
Paul Zed, Ignatieff's chief of staff, said the party is expecting around 2,000 delegates this weekend, which is more than expected.
"The big surprise, so far, is the number of delegates that have paid a lot of money to come and exchange ideas and be part of the renewal that is occurring across the country for the Liberal party," he told CTV's Power Play from Vancouver on Thursday.
Zed also denied Tory claims that the Liberals, if elected, will raise taxes in order to payoff Ottawa's massive stimulus deficit.
"One thing that Michael Ignatieff is going to do, is he's going to cut the deficit and he's going to make sure that Canadians get an opportunity to get jobs right across this country," he said.
"There are no new taxes coming in the middle of a recession, there are no new taxes coming in a recovery."
However, Zed conceded that the Grits will look at ways to "tighten" the government's belt by reviewing some federal programs.
Earlier in the day, CTV's Graham Richardson reported that the Liberals are hoping to further showcase Ignatieff's leadership talents, as well as their readiness for the next election.
According to the Liberal party website, the convention will host series of Thursday afternoon workshops that will tackle riding standards, political engagement and fundraising, among other topics.
The convention continues Friday and will wrap up on Saturday -- the same day that Ignatieff will officially be crowned leader.
Delegates will also vote on 30 resolutions that have been brought forward by riding presidents, including having a Liberal government invest heavily in child care, as well as social housing.
A pre-convention report commissioned by the party, suggested that members see Ignatieff as an agent of change with a "serious interest in party renewal at all levels."
However, the same report said that many grassroots Liberal supporters feel the party currently ignores them unless it is looking for money.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Oh, wait. There's NONE OF THAT. This is not a convention, it's a CORONATION! We know who won, the policy resolutions will be only those the elite want passed, stage managed to the last detail. The only drama is what color tie Ignatieff will wear during his acceptance speech (Oh wait, Liberal RED! No drama there, either!)
Welcome to political conventions, Liberal-style: of the entitled, by the entitled, for the entitled.

Harper is a sore loser and it is obviously he don't care about Canada as one whole nation.
By the way people should google Iggy's vision for Canada.. Amazing - I like him and I can see how this will happen. I think he is going to be our best prime minister ever... PET is still my # 1.
People - please remember that no matter which party or who Prime Minister is... Every Canada Goverment Make a Difference in Canada history!
Every government has both pro and con effects but overall it's good.
It's irony that harper's fans claimed that they are PROUDLY Canadian then they should give Liberal other chance to reshape our beautiful Country..... Liberal has been in government for many years far than any parties in history....
Fact is - Canada is awesome eh? then they must did good job.
Give them a other chance...
They are not like NDP so please don't refer them as cash-give-away party because they doesn't do that...
I've went through system - Liberal government is only one that got me on my foot therefore I am no longer on taxpayer payroll... I am on my own now...
Thanks Liberal! GO GO GO GO RED GO GO GO GO!

One day Vancouver is being touted as one of the best cities in the world to live in,and THE VERY NEXT DAY we have this collection of social engineers invading or peace and serentity.
Is there no end to our growing list of economic and political woes?? Socialist conventions should really be held in socialist cities and provinces.
Oh well.We can just offer up some polite western hospitality and hope they leave when the coronation is over. The article correctly points out one reason I left the party.I was also tired of not being heard,EXCEPT when they needed money.Of course the creeping left wing policies didn't do much to keep me on board either.I was especially hurt when they rejected my suggestion that they re-name the party to "NDP Lite".

None of the other parties gets this much media attention when they run their respective leadership races. Is this our predominatly left wing media showing it's colours again or do some people out there genuinely believe that because we're dealing with the "natural governing party" that Liberal leadership races are somehow "different" and that everybody better sit up and take notice?
I certainly don't recall the past few NDP, Conservative or Bloc Leadership Conventions having this kind of red carpet rolled out in terms of coverage. However, I do recall - and not so long ago either - that we were all treated to the same kind of media extravaganza when Mr.Dion took the reigns of the Liberal Party.
I find the lack of objectivity in their reporting and the explicit bias shown by CTV and others - dissapointing.

You Cons might want to spend your time reminding your party leader that by getting into bed with the Bloc is apparently a "betrayal of the voters of this country" as he once so adamantly stated last Christmas...
Oh wait! It's now OK, isn't it? Or is it? I'm so confused. The Cons flip flop on so many of their own principles in their desperate need to white knuckle on to power, I can't keep up anymore....
At least Mulroney & the PCs had more dignity and self respect than this version of Conservative party has...
As for the convention, I am hopeful that the Libs put together a platform that is relevant to Canadians. Some real substance as opposed to attack ads and pontifications about principles that the candidates really don't believe anyway ( you know the typical Con political strategy)...

The deficit is not anyones fault in the current PM's Office. in fact if you simply look at your provincial liberal leader. your provinces deficit is almost as large as the federal deficit, so on a linear type calculation, a liberal PM would have doubled our current deficit in one year, probably like 200 billion in deficit spending. I say Cut all programs that help people who could help themselves.. let those who have 9 kids and are on welfare because they cant keep there legs closed suffer for there actions. Tired of spending money on free needles for drug addicts, and to be honest, I would rather have a system in place that doesnt allow every person with the sniffles to go to the hospital... and please send all those immigrants without jobs back home, theyre here for a year, and get to claim unempoyement, get medical.. etc, the rest of us had to pay taxes since we started working, we earned it. enough is enough. Go Conservative, and create a country of competers, a country of people who will always strive to do better because there will be nothing to fall back on. 45% tax is enough. Dont you liberals get that.. This is your fault. Now let us correct it

The reason there was a surplus in the federal budget when the Liberals were in power is because they illegally taxed the EI Premiums to the tune of 60 billion dollars. Hmmmm. That's about the same amount as the surplus.
And the reason there is a deficit is because the Liberals demanded that Mr. Harper spend lots of money just like the Americans, or they were going to form a coalition to make it happen.
Watch the news a little more often and you might actually know what's going on.

Still, not being a fan of Mr.Harpers either,I will wait for policy.I am sick to death of style.Give me policies I can vote FOR.Do not expect to get my vote by suggesting what I should vote AGAINST.
And,to respond to the other regular Harper Hater here,I would ask if you really think Garth Turner is credible in ANY circle?I mean really,if you want to know about issues, the last people you are likely to get non partisan information from are politicians.I think if you beleive much of what Garth Turner says, that would say more about you than it says about either Harper or Turner.
I urge ALL Canadians to shun the Liberals until they present real policies, and in detail.Do not be bribed with your own money. And,even if we don't like Harper,we in the west MUST avoid all federal Liberals until they let the west join Canada.

Harper was the only PM that I can think of that actually lowered taxes.
Iggy has already stated that he would raise taxes. This would be very destructive to Canada right now, everyone with half a brain knows this. Why did the banks just lower the interest rate to a record .25%.... Because we need to spend our way out of a reccesion! They want us to borrow and spend!

As for the deficit. There wouldn't be one if the NDP, Liberal, Bloc coalition hadn't forced the spending in the first place then arrogantly put the Conservatives "on probation" to ensure that the spending takes place. Had they let the Conservatives move on the ecomomy as required, as they wanted to, in a slow and measured way, there wouldn't be a problem. The deficit was initiated by the three opposition parties in a power grab, not the Conservatives.

It just so happens that I once voted for the Liberal Party. However, I woke up to the facts. The Liberals allow themselves to waiver on ANYTHING if it suits their purpose. They are a "party of convenience". They tax us to death, then proceed to steal that same money for their own benefit. They balanced the budget and gained a surplus...not by proper management..but by robbing Peter to pay Paul(taking billions for the EI fund)...on the back of Canadian taxpayers! Again, for their on gain..not for the good of the country. If they hadn't stole that money, maybe Harper would be in a better position to help more people with EI.

"they should give Liberal other chance to reshape our beautiful Country"
I smell Liberal entitlement mentality here. Actually, the Conservatives are trying to reshape the country that was damaged by thirteen years of Liberal government - a reshaping that began within months of his election, with a 2% reduction in GST, and the accountability act to name a few - more money to Canadians and less money secretly given to Liberal friendly ad firms. People think Harper is mean spirited for trying to pull in the reigns on some of the willy-nilly spending of past Liberal governments. The fact is that the Harper government had quite the mess to clean up when they came to power. Give them a few more years in office to really govern, and Canada will be a beautiful place.

The coverage on the liberal convention could well have been a request for low key to distance them from their provincial counterparts. If you aren't already aware, the provincial liberals aren't too popular among people in BC these days.
As far as having the Conservatives in power during the Olympics, one might look ahead and say bring it on... we could well be in the throes of second wave pandemic by then. Along with the economy, job losses, cruise ships already cancelling Vancouver as a port, the homeless situation here, that water main break at the brand new $900 mil jewel of a convention centre, I believe that the $6 billion 2010 Olympics will look exceedingly good on Harper.

The fact that Ignatieff was elected to a "safe" Liberal riding is meaningless. Stephen Harper was elected to one of the safest Tory ridings in the country. No party other than Conservative, Reform, etc has ever won it since it was created in 1987. So you're being hypocritical there.
And sure his leadership went uncontested, but it wasn't him that demanded it. The other contestants realized that the leadership race would have been divisive and split the party even further. Now that they are more united than the Conservatives, I'd say it was a good choice.
And I'd love to see these "attack ads" that you speak of. I think it'll be quite a bit harder for the Tories to create attacks ads on Ignatieff than on Dion. And guess what, the Liberals will actually have the finances this time around to fight fire with fire. So, Iggy will eventually be going to his new home, 24 Sussex Dr.

I like the idea that the Liberals try to sell..we always get out of the hole and have extra money in our coffers....
You see Peter..that is the problem. It is not the Liberals money to put in their coffers! It is ours, yours and mine. It is our hard earned money. They raise the tax, or create new ones...collect our money, and all of a sudden they call themselves Heros, meanwhile I money is spilling out of their pockets and disappearing into unexplained scandels...millions at a time...
This latest money that the PCs did pledge...was forced by the Coup attempt of the Liberals, Bloc, and NDP...just weeks after Canadians had voted a new Goverment. The Cons are smart enough to know that they will not getdollar for dollar back on that bailout money...but if they were overthrown...the Coup would have wasted a heck of a lot more of OUR money...and we would be getting ready to vote the Conservatives back in...right about now...
