NATO attacked a pirate "mothership" on Saturday and freed 20 captured fishermen, but were forced to let a gang of Somali hijackers go free during a day of high drama off the east coast of Africa.

NATO forces were unable to detain the seven captured pirates because they lacked jurisdiction in the area to arrest them.

Hours earlier in a separate attack, bandits captured a Belgian-flagged ship carrying 10 foreign crew members as it sailed south of the Horn of Africa.

Both incidents illustrate the ongoing difficulty of effectively policing and maintaining safety off of Africa's east coast, where brash bands of pirates have carried out an increasing number of effective attacks in recent months.

This year, pirates have launched attacks on more than 80 vessels and now hold at least 18 ships and over 310 crew members hostage, according to The Associated Press.

In 2003, about 20 ships were attacked.

Pirates hijacked the Belgian-flagged Pompei in the Indian Ocean, about 240 kilometres north of the Seychelles, according to Portuguese Lt.-Capt. Alexandre Santos Fernandes, a member of the NATO team patrolling the area.

The ship sent two warning signals early Saturday morning that it was being attacked.

Officials have not been able to make contact with the ship since the signals were sent out.

"There is no contact with the pirates, not with the crew, not with any other parties," said Jaak Raes, director general of the Belgian Crisis Center. "We are sure that the ship now is heading to the coast of Somalia."

The Pompei has a crew of 10: two Belgians, one Dutch, three Filipinos and four Croatians.

Hours later, the Marshall Islands-flagged Handytankers Magic sent out a distress call after it was attacked by pirates armed with guns and rockets, Fernandes said.

A Dutch frigate that is part of the NATO force saw the pirates attempting to escape "on a small white skiff, which tried to evade and proceed toward a Yemeni-flagged fishing dhow," that the same pirates had seized on Sunday, Fernandes said.

The pirates were using the Yemeni boat as a so-called "mother ship," from which to launch skiffs to conduct attacks far away from the Somali coast.

The Dutch ship intercepted the skiff and captured the seven pirates, in addition to seizing seven Kalashnikov rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

The NATO troops then boarded the Yemeni vessel, freeing the 20 fishermen that had been held hostage on board.

A number of ships from Europe and North America, including HMCS Winnipeg, are battling pirates in the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes thanks to its status as a short cut between Europe and Asia.

Pirates have netted millions of dollars in recent years attacking ships and holding crew members for ransom.

kind of fighting a losing battle where one side has no rules and the other is inundated with bureaucracy, policy and predure so we dont hurt any ones feelings. You want to stop this? Shoot on site. There is no place in this day in age for piracy on the high seas.

Are we going to have to go back to ships travelling in convoys like they did back during WW2 to better protect themselves? What about hiring private security dettachments on board vessels to counter such piracy acts?

Honestly this situation has gotten way out of hand and no one seems to care about it... NATO needs to assert itself and act accordingly before these acts turn more tragic. You're dealing with poor uneducated people who come from a country so corrupt it can't even govern itself so they have nothing to lose so you need to take stronger more aggressive actions to get the message accross that this wont be tolerated anymore.

Enough Stupidity
said

This is stupidity, Like I said before any suspected vessels off the somali coast: 25 miles off the coast warn them, 30 miles off the coast make sure they pirates swim back. No reason for fishermen to be more than 50 miles off the coast, especially in this area.

This has to end. These people need to be dealt with severely. Why can the ships not have armed guards on board to shoot these pirates. It seems that this is happening now on a weekly basis. Enough is enough.

A dozen trained soldiers and a smattering of small arms and transportable technology on each ship in the area would end this problem quickly. The pirates obviously have no fear of fire hoses and unarmed bosuns mates. Merchant meriners have a long history of fighting off pirates with well armed ships, perhaps it is time to return to those swashbuckling days.

PIRATES CAN'T FEEL THE LOVE YET

Now that we know the problem is a socioeconomic one, and that these "pirates" (such a derogatory term) are truly impoverished Somali fishermen simply trying to make ends meet, we need to work harder at helping them.

Perhaps we should consider sending a tanker filled to the brim with U.S. currency in their direction, every month. That would help them buy the food, booze, weapons, gold jewelry, and prostitutes they may want.

If there's one thing I've learned from my left-wing, liberal friends...it's better to catch a pesky fly with an expensive jar of honey than to swat it dead.*

* I'm still confused about this lesson. Anyway, don't confuse people and flies. Flies are much smaller and, usually, nicer.

I believe many of these pirates used to be small village fisherman whose livelihoods have been largely destroyed by commercial over-fishing, pollution, oil spills, etc. by large multi-national corporations. I side with neither party. They both deserve one another!

Can't they find all of the "mother ships" where they are docked and storm them? And there should be at least an armed guard on each ship passing thru that area.

I find it bizarre that the Dutch would let the pirates go after catching them, if they can't hold them after capturing them why are they there in the first place? Hand custody over to another nation that can deal with them, instead of releasing them back to their clans with new intel so they can attack again. Piracy is after all, against international law.

Congratuations to the Danish Navy for their excellent work.
However, it is unbelievable that our increasingly incompetent political leaders send Nato troops to police the oceans, with no legal manner to deal with the criminals. The Canadian Navy was instructed to show the Pirates they encountered a sign, rather than engage.
The Danish Navy captured pirates who had fired on a ship in international waters, and rescued a ship and crew has been held hostage. Their only allowable action was to release everyone so they can strike again. At what point do we elect leaders who will act responsibly and effectively on our behalf?

I think NATO forces should be allowed to inspect any suspected fishing or whatever small boat that is floating around the shipping lanes of cargo ships. AND if they find any culprits, capture them OR if not possible to capture the pirates, SHOOT THE HELL OUT OF THEM. This will teach a good lesson to the pirates to stop their work. Otherwise, the piracy will get worse day by day. Notice that the more money these pirates manage to squeeze out of the ship owners, the more money the pirates have to equip themselves with sophisticated weapons and ammunitions.

Remember last year this time, this kind of piracy was almost non-existent.

Hey Frank, you're probably the same guy who thought that after 9-11 we should learn and read about and try to understand the mind of a terrorist. Blow these pricks out of the water the moment they approach and the piracy will end real soon. They are not hard-done by poor fisherman just trying to make ends meet. They are clearly hardened criminal opportunists operating in a "system" of no law which effectively grants them immunity, Enough of the soft left-winger kid gloves treatment of these hardened criminals.

This is an issue that should have been resolved a long time ago, with a simple solution. Allow a few armed guards on tankers. Don't arm the crew, but have guards on the boat. Then pirates on a lifeboat can't take over giant tankers. Makes sense, eh?

Anthony
said

This whole affair could be settled very simply and fast.
Once a boat approaches a ship, and does not respond to the warning, it's blown up. Mother ship would go first. But because they know that the west does not have a stomach for it as we are drawning ourselves in our idiotic laws and procedures, they have no fear. Can we blame them? The next thing we will hear is some idealistic idiot saying he or she wants to establish a democratic government in their country. Good luck.

Come on USA... declare a "War on Pirates"... do it!

These pirates have no fear of fire hoses or gunfire, therefore I would like to suggest something they would definitely be afraid of. Flamethrowers. Men will risk being shot because the scars are perceived as a badge of courage, but to risk being melted alive or being a crackled featureless horror for the remainder of your life is altogether different. Surprise your enemies and amuse your friends, start the party with a bang. I agree that all the captured pirates should be released though,...to Saudi Arabia, where Islamic law dictates the cutting off of hands for theft. Sharia law, it's what they want in Somalia so let's get them started. Besides which Saudi Arabia owes us.

Reece

In Vancouver we have a Bait-car program where thieves are allowed to steal vehicles that are equipped with GPS and remotely shut down when stolen - the police will then move in to arrest the thief.

Maybe they should have a similar program in the high-sea's....a bait-ship program. Blackwater soldiers can man the ship and wait for the pirates to hijack the ship. Blackwater has a nasty reputation in those parts and it's enough to frighten these pirates.

Yes I would let them go allright. All of them put in to a row boat of sorts without food or water and one oar.

_______________

I have a theory about people who are blatantly anti-American and possess a clinical compulsion to disparage the U.S. at every politically contrived opportunity:

JEALOUS.

Sadly, I would further theorize that you define your sense of Canadian nationalism by the degree to which you despise America, your southern neighbor. (There's also a metaphor here that may be applied.)

Perhaps you were at an "America Haters" convention when it took place, but, recently Uncle Sam kicked some pirate butt and taught some "fishermen" a lesson about identifying international flags.

End Note: Try soft music; it usually helps alleviate misplaced anger.

You'll be ready to go along with the US imperialist invasions of African countries with resources worth stealing . . . with some hocus pocus about fighting "pirates."

It would be cheaper to pay the ransoms.

Account for the expenditure as an insurance expense.

Much cheaper than having navies paddling around looking for easy targets.

This has to stop, before innocent people are killed. Like always we are going to need the Americans to get there snipers over there because Nato and the rest of the world will do nothing. These pirates ships need to be blown apart with the pirates on board. Its cheaper to buy an ak 47 and hire someone to shoot it than to pay ransom.

As Pye Chart says, anti-Americanism is plentiful in Canada. Another group of dummies who can't think for themselves, only spout off NDP Socialist philosophy. Some day we will need our partners to the south, although these types would never understand that. Where do you all think North America would be today without the protection offered by the U.S.? Oh, almost forgot, N.A. would be some marxist-communist regime which many of you obviously want cause you have some misguided notion that it's a better system. It takes all types I guess. Oh and by the way all you anti-American socialists, how many Canadians or Americans want to defect to Cuba, your glorious wonderland. Cubans all want to defect to U.S. and Canada...it's a one-way street called freedom and democracy.

As long as ransoms are being paid, more ships will be taken by pirates. I also agree with Ron in the West, and Prof. Pye Chartt. Since the UN seems to claim world leadership, they need to get their act together to do some serious capture, arrest and punishment for these pirates before hostages taken are killed.

When you weren't looking, the U.S. invaded Canada and took control of many of its primary resources.

Damn American imperialists! Wait a minute! Is that where the name "Imperial Oil" (Esso/Exxon) came from?!

Where the heck were you when we needed you?! (You must have been throwing rocks and bottles at a peace rally.)

P.S. I'm sure glad we didn't let those Yanks take control of our auto manufacturing sector. ...Phew!

I feel so sorry for these poor pirate kids. These are just innocent kids that have no food or future and were led astray. We need to forgive them and help them with a loving hand. We should send them money from Alberta so they can buy food and go to school. If only Stephan Dion was the PM, he’d know what to do. Shame on all you bully neo-conservatives.

Horsepuckies!

It would have been no problem at all to sink the offending pirate vessel, with or without its crew. There need be no attempt to arrest and subject pirates to a questionable judicial fate. Kill a few and publicize the fact. The remainder will get the idea quickly enough!

If NATO naval forces lack the clear rules of engagement to engage and destroy pirates on sight then we are lacking the resolve to really deal with this challenge.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
