A Montreal university student is being credited with foiling a troubled British teen's plot to firebomb his high school.

J.P. Neufeld, a student at Concordia University, had logged onto an online chat forum over breakfast Tuesday when he spotted the threat to burn down Attleborough High School in Norfolk.

He took it seriously and immediately called local police using his Internet phone service after doing a quick Web search to find the phone number.

Within half an hour, Norfolk Constabulary officers had seized a 16-year-old teen at the doors of the school. The teen was carrying a knife, matches and a canister of fuel. Police later searched the boy's home and confiscated his computer.

The teen, identified only as T.B., was arrested on suspicion of threats to commit criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon. He's in custody under the U.K.'s Mental Health Act.

Neufeld saw the threat posted on NewGrounds.com, a website dedicated to sharing music and homemade animation. "Today at 11:30 GMT I will attack my school with arson and other forms of violence. Those bastards will pay," the post read.

Below, was a badly lit photo of a gasoline can. Also included were a time and date stamp taken from a video from the 1999 Columbine massacre.

Neufeld said he decided right away to take it seriously.

"Posts like that aren't taken as lightly anymore since people have followed through on that," he told CTV News Friday.

He said the officer who took his call sounded surprised to be getting a call from Canada but took down the information nonetheless.

After calling police, Neufeld tried to stall T.B., asking him if he really intended to walk into school with a gas can.

"Pretty much," T.B. answered.

Once T.B. had left the forum, Neufeld and another user named "deckheadtottie" announced they had called police. Several users pitched in, establishing T.B.'s identity.

The school's principal, Stuart Bailey, said he's grateful the attack was stopped before it began.

"I am very grateful to the person who did the right thing and made us aware," he said. "...Whilst the incident is clearly not welcome, I am pleased with the manner in which it was dealt with both by my staff, and by Norfolk Constabulary."

Norfolk police also expressed gratitude and praised the actions of the chat room users.

"It goes to show that things written on the Internet can be viewed across the world and we thank the person who has read this and done something about it," police Supt. Katie Elliott told British journalists.

It is good to get involved. Neufeld could easily have shrugged it off as a prank and considered how embarassed he would have been calling in a false alarm but he saw the bigger picture and took the risk of becoming involved. Good decision, J P Neufeld, and thank you.

Imagine if the CRTC get its hands on the Internet and deems sites like the one listed in the story 'unsuitable' for Canadian eyes?

Even if this story was a prank, it would have been a tasteless prank in today's world. Good job on spotting it. Anyone wanting to off themselves, go for it but don't take those who aren't ready to go yet..

Very smart move, congrats to J.P.! More people should learn from this and hopefully more people are caught before these mass murder and violent acts. Job well done by the police to take his call seriously as well. Just a matter of a couple phone calls and you can save people's lives. Let's take these threats seriously and teach our children how to spot the threats and talk to us about them so we can take it to the authorities.

This is another reason why those in charge of serving and protecting the public need to have access to the chatrooms on the internet. Neufeld should be honoured by the Norfolk constabulary for his early warning and doing the right thing in preventing what could have been a tragedy.

This is refreshing news in an age where many internet users are convinced that their actions on the internet have no physical or moral consequences.
A few months ago there was the case of the boy who slowly committed suicide in front of an online audience, who did nothing to stop him, even though it was in their power.
I congratulate the Montreal student who has his mind in reality and not lost in some virtual fantasy. We need more of you.

Excellent work!

Neufeld is a perfect example of a conscious Canadian and world citizen.

As responsible citizens, it is our duty to take action when there is an imminent threat of injury or death. We may not (and in most cases should not) intervene physically, but calling the authorities so that they may take action is the right thing to do.

We, the general population, have an absolute advantage over government and law enforcement: we have eyes EVERYWHERE! If everyone who saw a crime or had reason to suspect a crime was imminent reported it to law enforcement, crimes would go down dramatically.

A simple deed turns into a heroic act. Kudos to this man for doing the right thing. Not everyday do we see such an act like this.

Hopefully people can learn from this and start taking online threats seriously.

@ Phil,

You misunderstand what the CRTC does and what their mandate is.

The CRTC has been heavily involved in the dismantling and deregulation of radio and TV in Canada.

Most specifically the ability to have a foreign company, (most believe Corus Entertainment to be Canadian which isn't the case), with major shareholders based out of the US, to buy up all of Canada's radio stations and amalgimate them.

This is done by the CRTC who previous to 2000 had a rule on the books that didn't allow for multisignal owners.

Meaning that one person, or company could not own anymore than one AM or FM signal in any one city or community.

Since the CRTC changed the laws Corus has swept through Canada and in some cases owns as much as two AM and three FM stations in one city.

Which means Corus could put all those stations into one building, where it would take normally one person to handle one department for one station, they made one person handle all work for all signals in one department, which allowed them to fire off all the extras.

Which means a huge savings in running these operations resulting in a huge value of Corus shares feeding directly into the main shareholders in San Fran.

This has meant that the value of what you hear everyday on the air since 2000 has gone into the toilet.

It another reason why good broadcasters disappeared after 2000 because Corus wouldn't pay to have them.

When they controlled all the stations in any one city, they could put low cost broadcasters on all stations and not fight in ratings any more.

But you and most other Canadians didn't know that because the CRTC isn't about advertising what it does.

Just so you know.

Although I praise this student for following his instincts and notifying the authorities.

However, with all the media attention and calling of 'hero' going on, this could lead to the needless reporting of EVERY tasteless comment made online. Statements like those made by the accused are made all the time online with no intent of following through. I fear it could results in waves of dead-end reports that will use up valuable, and ever thinning police time and resources.

But again, this was a success story and I am greatful a tragedy was avoided. Just noticing the potential for people (as the often do) to get carried away.

That's a really smart idea, that Neufeld contacted Norfolk Constabulary directly, I think it saves a lots of time and that's why they managed to get a guy before he had a chance to take lives. Congratulations to Neufeld, he does deserve a medal and it's one more day without violence!

The UK does have the George cross (which is the civilian equivalent of the VC) for acts of bravery not committed not in the face of the enemy.
