British actress Natasha Richardson, who suffered a serious head injury after falling in a ski lesson in Mont Tremblant, has left a Montreal hospital and has been transported out of the country.

Richardson was reportedly taken to a facility in New York City, but the condition of the Tony-award winning actress is unknown.

Michelle Simard, a spokesperson for Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, said Richardson left Canada at about 12:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Richardson was skiing on a beginners' hill at Mont Tremblant on Monday when she fell, according to resort spokesperson Lyne Lortie.

"She was at the middle of the slope and she didn't seem to fall very violently at all," Lortie told CTV Montreal.

She added that Richardson was not wearing a helmet, which is not mandatory on Quebec ski hills.

Ski patrol accompanied Richardson to her hotel room, where her ski instructor stayed until she reported feeling unwell.

Staff called an ambulance, which brought her to the Centre Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste-Agathe. She was later transferred to Sacre Coeur.

The Toronto Star reported that Richardson was later taken by ambulance to Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport and left in a private jet. The newspaper said Richardson's husband, actor Liam Neeson, was with her and he looked extremely worried.

Media reports have conflicted widely about Richardson's condition. But Quebec neurosurgeon Dr. Judith Marcoux said it was a positive sign Richardson was still walking after her fall and was later able to be airlifted to New York.

Richardson is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave.

Her husband was filming the movie "Chloe" in Toronto with Julianne Moore. A source from the set said Monday that Neeson has left Toronto to be with his wife in Montreal.

"Liam Neeson left the Toronto set immediately to fly to Montreal upon news of his wife's accident," a rep for his film said in a statement to CTV that was published on a number of websites. "We do not have any details at this time but we hope for the best and our thoughts and prayers are with Natasha and Liam and their family."

Representatives for Richardson and Neeson have not yet commented on the reports.

Richardson, 45, has appeared in dozens of films, including "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Maid in Manhattan."

She also won a Tony Award 1998 for her Broadway turn in the musical Cabaret.

The couple have two children: Michael, 13, and Daniel, 12.

Hope everything goes well and they are back together soon. Such acting talent, such a great family should not have to be separated!

Tragic accident, but why does one have to be a celebrity before such news is reported? If a non-celebrity was the victim in this accident do you think it would have made this website? Sad that what happens to some people is more important than what happens to others.

Very sad. Thinking of you and hoping that you pull through unscathed.

Sad story, but these accidents happen everyday. I don't think her being a celebrity should evoke any more concern from society or coverage from the media.

Who's Natasha Richardson? Oh she's A CELEBRITY'S WIFE? Well, I suddenly care about her injury more than any of the similar injuries that happen to good people every day but aren't reported. The news industry is a joke.

Natasha Richardson is an actress who has appeared in many films. Let me guess you know her husband because he was in Star Wars right! Her mother Vanessa Redgrave is considered the greatest living actress, although I am sure you have never heard of her...moron!

Here is why

Personally celeb or not she crashed, ya it sucks, but she is a celeb good for her she is also human as well and she does deserve compassion I am sure the family thinks the media should take a hike. But to say you don't care because she is famous is pretty shallow and judgmental.

We are the ones who enable the Media to produce this material and create celebs by purchasing the material. Cause and effect.

She is NOT a "celebrity wife". She is a very renouned actress herself from Stage and screen. She comes from a well known famly in the UK.

For those who feel that 'some people are more important than others, etc" lots of news reports go out every day that have everything to do with personal tradgedy and nothing to do with celebrety.
However, if this story gets ONE parent to put a helmet on their child because they are a fan of either Natasha or her husband...bravo.

Celebrity or not an accident like this is tragic. Hoping she pulls through unscathed. Now to all you folks saying it's only news because she's a celebrity; wasn't there a report last week about a kid who had a helmet on and had an accident? If I remember he died! Also tragic, but it didn't get near the comments that this "celebrity accident" did. I agree, if at least one parent, or for that matter adult, decides to wear a helmet because of the news coverage than it is worth reporting! By the way - why do we need a law enforcing bicycle helmets, seatbelts in cars, motorcycle helmets, etc? Isn't it logical what happens after the sudden stop??

I really hope this works out well for her.Accidents can so often appear quite minor, but develope into quite serious injuries.
As to people suggesting the reporting of an accident involoving a celebrity is somehow suggesting they are more important than non celebrities,I suggest you give your own head a shake.I can barely imagine what that would sound like.My only guess is that some have a need to be cynical, sarcastic and negative about every issue under discussion.
Millions of people aroiund the world know very well who this woman is and I suspect they are all lining up to wish her well.

I've been wearing my downhill ski helmet while curling for 3 years.

Yes, I look geeky.

However, two weeks ago I slipped and violently hit my head while curling.

I may be geeky, but I'm alive!

Hope she gets better.

Unfortunately, without facts, other site have posted that she's either dead or brain dead. One even had an obituary. Sensationalism at its worse.

If she left Montreal on a flight, she either alive and in stable condition or is hopefully not dead. They wouldn't move her if she wasn't stable.

For the people that complain about celebrity news, do you really think that this family wants everyone in their business? I am a fan of both Natasha and Liam and feel for them in this tragic time. Complain about something else and leave this family alone or send prayers out to them.

As tragic as this is and I hope she is okay, I'm just surprised by all of the conflicting reports as to the severity of her head injury. You would think that the medical staff that treated her would at least be able to clarify if she was "brain-dead" when she left the hospital.

Politricks
said

Not to pretend to be a doctor OR sound insensitive. Buuuut, after hearing she was FLOWN out of Canada after the injury makes me suspect the head injury cannot be too severe. If you even have a slight concussion doctors will not let you fly, due to the dangers in air pressure/altitude changes.

Just a random thought... hopefully she will be okay and have a quick recovery...but let's not have this story dominate the headlines all day now.

So many diff reports on how she is doing etc. Prayers are with the family that she will be Ok.

By the way ... I have my kids wear helmets when we've gone tubing or ice skating (ages 16 and 11). They are not happy campers I can tell you that. Maybe if they read this, they will "appreciate" (?) wearing one? My 11 yr old had a field trip (which was canceled due to a lack of people wanting to go). They were going tubing, snowboarding or skiing. Helmets were manditory! I was so happy to read that!More ski hills should enforce it!

Matt
said

Now to be fair would anyone else get such attention if you weren't a celebrity? Probably not, but lets not forget that she is a person and everyone is important.

Michelle Carr
said

I find the negative comments extremely disturbing. She did not go into "out of bounds" areas requiring that other people risk their lives; she was learning a new sport and yes, she should have been wearing a helmet. But I tried to learn to ski in my early 50s and fell constantly. No one at the rental shop had suggested a helmet. Like a belly flop into water, we forget how unforgiving many surfaces are.

What is sad is that she was an incredibly talented actress married to an equally talented actor from the premier family of British acting. They have been married a long time and appear to be extremely happy. The loss of a loving mother and wife is the story here not that she was or was not a celebrity. Shame on those of you blaming her or wishing the family anything but prayers and hope.

Still looking for real news stories. People aren't interested in the fact that there are Russian Long Range Bombers testing Canadian reaction times, so why are they interested in this? I also agree with Randy. To Mark in Ontario, please don't lump me in with your "we" statement. Thanks.

Totally with eric in Alberta with respect to the trashy comments offered here and the totally unrelated agendas peddled simply because it's a forum.
I for one will be very interested to learn how someone can appear 'normal' for more than an hour and succumb to what sounds like terrible injury. We can all learn something - celebrity or not.

first she is in the hospital, then they have no record, then the hospital spokeswomam says she has been transferred. if they have no record how do they know where she flew from and how she was transported by private jet. is tha csis involved in this?

PS to my post earlier ... not only to my 2 children wear helmets when tubing, my husband any myself do too. We were even given a two thumbs up a few years ago when we went tubing at Mt Avila, the person watching at the top thought it was a great thing for us to have done. :)

I don't think her problem has anything to do with a simple fall on an open ski slope. This woman has a more serious health issue which is why they wisked her out of Quebec to another hospital that can care for her properly.

Very unfortunate the accident that Ms. Richardson was involved in .
The instructor must be held liable for not insisting on head gear for a beginner no matter how gentle a slope .
Helmets and head gear must be made mandatory on all ski hills in Canada to avoid anyone becoming injured .
Where was the instructor ?

Steph from Montreal
said

Pat, the piano lady (and everyone else confused by the mixed news)

What we know for certain is that she was taken to a hospital in NYC... and this is not because the care is better there. Being from Montreal, and my wife who is a nurse, Sacre Coeur is a superior trauma facility. She would not have been airlifted elsewhere if she was in critical condition. Unless something extremely unfortunate happens, it's likely she is stable and will be okay in the end.

to answer Birdie's question. A brainstem injury, or a skull fracture in that area, could account for this scenario of walking and talking after an accident, followed by a sudden collapse. It's extremely rare, but I've seen it during my time as an EMT. That said, my thoughts and prayers are with the family and I will wait for official information.

We all hope Natasha and Liam all the best, they are 2 great people and we wish them all the prayers in the world, it's to bad to hear such a accident to anyone, I think that helmets should be mandatory to wear at every ski resort for everyone's safety.

Sheri in Ottawa
said

I hope that she's okay.

From what the reports from the resort say, it seems hard to believe that her injuries are so severe, considering she had an "uncomplicated" fall on a bunny slope. I wonder if she had an undiagnosed health condition that prompted the fall or else was triggered by it?

In either case, please stop the negative posts. Celebrity or not, it's compassion that shows class, not cynical arguments about the "value" of her story.

Linda in Vancouver
said

I really hope this has a positive outcome. And no,I don't believe she is more important than any other person in this situation.I would, however,be willing to bet more people know her than know any of the people posting on here.If I had an accident like this, there would be a couple of dozen people who would wnat to know.A celebrity, while no more important, simply has more people watching, and hopefully wanting to pass on their best wishes.
As to "Hunter Mars"" !! Are you crazy?? Who in the heck on the planet earth do you think you are to have the right to legislate the lives of everyone else? Did I miss the election in which you were elected God??
Your comments make you sound almost as ignorant as those who fail to take their personal safety serious enough.
I agree with the notion that people should wear helmets. But I agree even more, that we must all have the freedom to choose for ourselves, and to make choices about our own tolerance for risk.If real freedom is to painful for some to handle, perhaps they would be happier in some other country.
There are no laws that can be passed "to avoid anyone becoming injured".So,I'm an adult, capable of making my own decisions. So,"Hunter",I ask you to just trust me on that, and mind your own business.

I promise you, to her family, she is not a celebrity. She is a daughter, mother, wife, sister; just like any other victim of a tragic accident. Her celebrity does not take away from the fact that she's a loved human being. The fact that it's being reported in the media does not make it any less tragic.
