More Americans consider Great Britain, rather than Canada, to be the United States' top ally, according to a recent Gallup Poll.

The telephone survey of 1,023 adults found that although Canada is the United States' most important trading partner, 36 per cent of respondents believe Great Britain to be their country's "most valuable ally."

Canada ranked second, earning top spot from 29 per cent of respondents, with Japan, Israel and Germany rounding out the top five.

The poll's results were released on Tuesday, the same day that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited U.S. President Barack Obama for the first time since Obama was sworn into office.

The poll's findings may reflect the close ties forged between the U.S. and Great Britain over the last several years. Former British prime minister Tony Blair became one of former president George Bush's strongest allies, particularly after he pledged troops to the Iraq war.

Indeed, in a March 2007 Gallup Poll that asked Americans to assess Blair, respondents gave him a 65 per cent approval rating.

However, the new poll found that 40 per cent of respondents had never heard of Brown, while 29 per cent said they did not know enough about him to have an opinion about him.

While Americans overall may not consider Canada to be their country's most important ally, Canada was more popular than Great Britain among certain segments of the U.S. population.

Thirty-five per cent of Democrats said Canada was the United States' most valuable ally, compared to only 26 per cent of Republicans. As well, Americans living in the Midwest, whose home states are close to the Canadian border, are more likely to consider Canada rather than Great Britain as the United States' top ally.

And generally speaking, Americans still have a very favourable opinion of their neighbours to the north.

Ninety per cent of Americans gave Canada a favourable rating, including 39 per cent who gave Canada a "very favourable" rating. Eighty-nine per cent of Americans gave Great Britain a favourable rating.

I am amazed we have a good rating at all considering the comments made my our former Liberal government. I guess we are slowing working our way back into favour. We do need to get along.

Ironic, with the exception of Israel the U.S has fought a war against all it's "most valuable allies" in the last 200 or so years.

I wonder what the results of this poll would have been if conducted back in March 2003. To jog some memories, that was when the USA invaded Iraq and we said 'no, thanks, we see no evidence'. I guess the point I'm poking at is this: the American populace is fickle, and only really know what the mainstream media feed them. Sheep. It's their own fault and their governments fault. I bet most Americans still think the 9/11 hijackers were Iraqis who entered through Canada, when the reality is they were mainly Saudis and came through Britain.
Ah well, when the Russians come after the oil wealth of the Arctic, we'll find out who is allied to whom.

Republicans in the US only consider GB as their closest ally all because GB sucked up to the US and sided witht hem on the issue of the War in Iraq.

If you look at the Democrats however, they feel that Canada is the closest ally to the US since we are the most important ally to the US when it comes to trade, energy and many other issue's.

Over time American views of Canada will change slowly, especially now that the war in Afghanistan is beginning to get more recognition in the US news media.

Well, Terry, if the Liberals hadn't stood up to Bush, we'd be losing our soldiers in Iraq too. All in the support of lies of WMD's. Be thankful it wasn't the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper in power at the time.

First as a citizen of the U.S., I want to apologise for my fellow citizens. The only excuse I can give is that geographicly Canada is so close that it difficult to imagine you guys as anything but fellow citizens on a great continent.
Secondly I believe that England has one hell of a propagana machine.
Last comment; I will bet that over 40% of those surveyed could not find England on a map!

Well of course they are. Remember shortly after 911 2001, the US president faltered and Tony Blair had to step up and respond to the crisis and respond to the criminal acts of that day. It was only after that that things returned to normal. All Canada did was was welcome and give comfort to thousands of American citizens who were stranded and barred from their Home nation that day!

I wonder if there was a poll for Americans if they actually knew what the capitol city of Canada was...let alone who they thought was their biggest trading partner.

Damn. We should have gone to war in Iraq so we could make #1 on that list!

I am devastated that we're only #2. How can we even look at ourselves in the mirror with a rating like that? Maybe we should just disband the nation altogether.

It is clear that the Conservative government, with its grovelling at the feet of the Bush Administration, accomplished little to raise Canada's profile in the United States. Hopefully, with a future Liberal government, the 2 Harvard colleagues, Obama and Ignatieff, our profile south of the border will change.

well the perception in the us is that canada is doing nothing to help with the war on terror...

That sounds about right. Canada is a good ally but when it comes to helping America in the world, there is only so much we can do. Great Britain, on the other hand, is the #2 military power in the power (they spend more money on their military than China or Russia) and they use it effectively in conjunction with the US

Its like in Orwell's 1984, doublethink, having two contradictory ideas and being ok with it. Its like at one time the US was saying that Sadam was their top allie and showed how great he was. But look now, and it seems that people never even questioned it.

Who cares with the markets in a meltdown and free fall. The US is useless to us if it's dragging our economy down and syphoning our resources.

No wonder our country is in this mess due to the over focuse tides.

Lets move on to more important topics.

It's all good news if you ask me. US, Canada & Britain will always stand together. Their values are meshed together more tightly than their economics and we know we can trust one another. I don't need to be at the top of a list to know this and I'm sure many In Britain & the US feel this way.

They said "ally". Not friend or trading partner. GB has more clout internationally and has a stronger military than Canada. Canada is just starting to be taken seriously again. I am surprised we are in the top 2 considering some of the anti-US rhetoric that has been coming out of Canada the past few years.

Would you listen to yourselves? We were ranked 2nd, not last. Stop crying and whining. Cant we do anything other then being offended by something. Canadians have no problem being anti american and yet we find out that were only 2nd place on a list everyone gets upset. Extremely hypocritical. If I were American I would have chosen Britain as the top ally too. They are larger then us, a stronger military, and more willing to support the US on international matters. That is not a criticism against Canada, its just the truth.

Since when do we rate our success on how we are viewed by the USA. Yes, it is gatifying that the are those in the USA that recognise our contributions, but to put this much effort into this is rather confusing. Personally, for myself, I sleep well in the knowledge that our contributions, internationally, are assiting those in need...

I don't mind being second. An ally is someone who backs you up, right or wrong. Canada doesn't do that.
A friend is someone who tells you, 'you are wrong' so you don't make a mistake in the first place. I would rather be the friend they can count on for advice, than the ally who jumps off the cliff with them.

What a stupid survey.I wonder who might actually take it seriously.I'd like to see the questions.
That said,it's natural to assume that a country that comes in and tries to help out with issues the USA needs help with,is going to be considered as a close ally.Certainly the Brits don't hide when the going gets tough.
Good intentions aside, our small population means our military capacity isn't big enough to make a huge difference in either an armed conflict,or a natural disaster. And our fiscal capacity is also to small to be of much value to most exporting nations. In the real world, the USA doesn't get anything from Canada that it can't get somewhere else.On the scale of "importance",if I was an American,I doubt Canada would register at all.
BUT,the meaning of our friendship is not always with a government,or even with foreign policies. It is also about how "we the people" interact. And,on that scale I suggest there are no two peoples on the planet more similar in their life styles and values than are Americans and Canadians. We share a border, sure. But we also share very similar histories, our familes are inter-twined,we visit each other frequently, and we invariably find ourselves getting along famously in almost any social venue.
It's mostly the political junkies who make mountains out of mole hills in an attempt to further their own political agendas by creating controversy where none exists. If you doubt that, just read the post by "5th Generation Canadian".
How partisan is that?? If "Iggy" had been there he would have expressed the same view as Harper.
