An Ottawa ByWard Market shop girl says she nearly passed out with excitement when U.S. President Barack Obama made a quick stop into her store on Thursday after finishing up business on Parliament Hill.

The president's surprise stop at the historic ByWard Market created what has become the usual pandemonium Obama now encounters wherever he goes, with crowds of eager shoppers - some screaming with excitement -- rushing to meet the U.S. president and to grab a picture.

Obama's stopped at a French bakery for cookies, a souvenir shop where he picked up a key chain with a moose on it for his daughter and a scarf for his wife, and then the Beaver Tails Hut where 17-year-old Jessica Milien works.

"It was overwhelming, I almost fainted. I couldn't believe I was standing in front of President Obama," Milien told Canada AM Friday.

A U.S. Secret Service agent appeared at the window of the Beaver Tail hut and said the president had asked for one of the hot pastries her store sells. Milien, who has been a huge fan of Obama's, was selected as the employee who would hand it to him.

"He asked me my name and we had a little conversation and then we took pictures," she recounted, calling it the most exciting day of her life.

"Meeting him meant that there is possibility to succeed at anything in life. He's inspired me to work hard and achieve every day," she added.

BeaverTails Canada Inc. founder and co-owner Grant Hooker had invented a custom-made Beaver Tail, called the Obama Tail, which was served at the Canadian Embassy during the Obama inauguration back in January.

So that's what was served to the man himself: an Obama Tail, a tail-shaped deep-fried pastry, coated with cinnamon and sugar and topped with maple-flavoured eyes and drizzled with a Nutella "O" for "Obama."

Hooker says he had sent out an invitation to the president to come in and try it but he never dreamed Obama would do it.

"I had said there was a snowball's chance in Florida he would actually accept," Hooker told Canada AM.

But accept he did, though no one at BeaverTails knew he was coming ahead of time.

"We didn't have the faintest hint," Hooker says.

Obama and his massive security team also shuffled their way through the crowds to stop in Le Moulin de Provence, a local French bakery. There, the president picked up maple-leaf-shaped cookies for his daughters - which he got on the house, says employee Isabelle Corriveau.

"He wanted to buy shortbread cookies, but we gave them to him, for his girls," she told Canada AM. "He said thank-you and then he left."

After Obama shook hands with all the employees in the shop and posed for pictures, Corriveau says she was struck by how friendly the president was.

"I think he's down-to-earth and really nice. He's a really nice person actually, I think," she said.

Obama and his 50-car motorcade also made an unexpected visit at the indoor market across the street from the bakery, where he drew screams and cheers from shoppers as he wandered through the aisles and chatted with vendors.

Earlier in the day, about 1,000 onlookers gathered on the snowy lawn of Parliament Hill to catch a glimpse of the famed American president. They received only a brief wave from Obama, who was joined by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. But many said it was the moment they had been waiting for.

"We're so tired, we haven't slept," Stephanie Scott, a Toronto resident who arrived on the Hill at 4:30 a.m. told CTV Ottawa.

Some Americans even made the trip to Canada just to see the U.S. president.

"Why do you think I'm here? It's because I couldn't go (to the inauguration in Washington)," said Rita Bruney of Brooklyn. "I missed him one place, so I'm catching him on the other side."

You can bet that bakery is going to get a whole lot more busier in the future now that it was visited by Obama.

Hope he comes back!

Obama is right person to fix the US's image globally to one that is open and friendly. He's got so much on his shoulders but he still will make time for people.

Hopefully he'll be back in Canada soon!

I sure can't see any other US President taking the time to do that -- which speaks eloquently about President Obama truly being a man of the people. A phrase that's often used -- but rarely understood or fully appreciated.

I am very impressed.

I was so impressed by the visit by President Obama. I'm not a conservative, but I thought the Prime Minister handled it with real class. Now, if he can just smile like that all the time....

Honestly - I did not think that I would live to see another "Kennedy" president. I just hope this man is worth all the hype. It is nice to see cheers instead of peolple destroying the city.

You know what amazes me? "The Beast" is armour plated, has guns, is bullet proof, toxic gas proof and every other safety feature you can imagine - but the secret service neglected to put in automatic locks to keep the president from jumping out of it whenever he feels like it - risky business!

I really think the President Mr. Obama is what the U.S. needs after the 8 years of disaster of his predecessor.
I think he will bring Peace and stability to the U.S.
I believe him to be a humanist and really cares for what is best for all.

You know the economy is bad when people are giving the President free food...
Just Kidding.
After all the politrickery of the visit, this was a huge surprize. I guess the leader of the free world is free to go where ever he wishes. And he's mroe than welcome to come back!

I think that is totally cool! Obama received an invitation to go get a Beavertail and obviously he takes such invitations seriously (and did some research so he understood the significance of this treat to us, particularly to Ottawa), not wanting to offend. This bodes so well for Cdn/US relations. I was very proud of Prime Minister Harper. I thought he said some very eloquent things. The whole thing was pretty cool, and I loved the tete a tete with the Gov General. Go girl. I wasnt all for her at the beginning but she has been turning out to be a real asset in worldly relations for Canada. I know alot of people thought this was a waste of money, but I dont agree. I think sometimes you have to drop by and see the new neighbours, it was very respectful I thought. They will certainly have lots to discuss going forward but this visit was impt to set the stage for it. I usually am, but I was especially proud to be Canadian yesterday. It was really cool that they showed some of the podium qs and as on CNN even. that should indicate the significance of what was said to the non believers.

Wonderful visit and a classy act to mingle with ordinary folks. This man truely knows how to make a good impression. Too bad Harper looks so lame next to him. I think part of the attraction to Obama by Canadians is that we wish we had someone similar to lead us. Harper may get a short term bounce in the polls from this visit but Ignatieff and the Liberals will be the long term winners because of their inside connections with the Obama presidential campaign.

President Obama is testimony that real people DO exist in positions of power and what a gentleman he was on his stop through the Byward Market. THe whole day was a success for Canada...and sweet to see a change in attitude all around ! Canada and the US are dependent on each other and good friends too - esp when we can disagree and still cooperate ! Thanks Mr President ! Thanks Prime Minister Harper - what a great day !

I have to say that the US prez will leave a footprint in Canada that no other has done so. I was alos glad to see that PM Harper was not left out of the lime light, he did shine and smile more then he has in recent times.

But now lets get both sides getting on with govterment and putting an end to the issues at hand

An example of excellent political leadership. There are certain to be some who will complain or whine that it is irrelevant, cynical or a PR stunt. Thankfully, true leadership is understood to require actions just like this. A political leader who recognizes this fact is one who can motivate his constituents in ways others can only dream of.

I think that's really great of Obama. He was just going into a shop to buy Canadian souvenirs for his family and he took the time to shake hands and say hi to everyone, even though he was probably too busy to spend so much time there.

It's good news. It's happy and it's uplifting and I think that's something that should make the news more often.

It's not at all serious, it won't change the world, but it is good to know. It's sort of comforting to know that the new US President is actually a nice person.

A whirlwind trip that just cost the taxpayer $2 million dollars. A nice tab for a meet and greet. We are in trouble folks and all Harper and Obama can do is try to spend their way out of this crisis like two drunken sailors. Wake up! Both of these leaders are in serious trouble and don't know how to get us out of this economic mess!

So basically President Obama spent the same amount of time with ordinary Canadian working people as he did with Harper and Ignatieff.

Excellent decision on Obama's part if he wants to really understand Canada and not just be used for political spin-hopefully he can do this in every country he visits.

The World is full of Presidents or PM that cannot identify with the people they lead. They are just too high and above people. President Obama though being in such a poweful position can still lower himself by doing what he did that is a great lesson he left behind to us Canadian or politicians in particular.

May God bless him that is my prayer!

Lots of folks do care, Joe. I am thrilled to see all the positive comments here. I'm looking forward to seeing what President Obama is going to be doing over the next four years in this very difficult world.

with all the information shared between the leaders of north america and the most in depth story i get to read is how great it is that obama stopped for some free cookies!

what a joke! does the content of the meetings matter to our society or are we all swept up in obamamania? get a life. it is a sad day that a new generation of government crook is treated like a rockstar who cured cancer.

I honestly cannot remember the last time a foreign dignitary spent time with the 'common folk' during a state visit.

This shows that President Obama backs up what he says. I'm reading his book "The Audacity of Hope" where he admits that public office makes it difficult to be able to connect with the people he represents, but he tries with public meetings and adhoc 'walkabouts'. This action will boost his appeal throughout the world, not just Canada. I hope the Presidency doesn't wear on him too greatly and prevent him from being able to comfortably meet people and be amongst them.

You have to admit though, his Secret Service agents must have had a fit with him standing on the footrest of the "Beast", waving to the crowd.
