Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says the new president of the United States is "an extraordinary personality" who cares deeply about his relationship with Canada and is well-informed about major bilateral issues.

Ignatieff told CTV's Canada AM that U.S. President Barack Obama was "a total master of the Canadian files that he was asked to grasp" and that he values his neighbours to the north.

"I think he understands that we're not just a useful ally, a friendly ally - we're an essential ally," Ignatieff said Friday morning.

"We supply them with most of their energy, we are a huge part of their external market."

The president, Ignatieff said, "knows how important we are."

The Liberal leader had a half-hour meeting with Obama at the end of the president's whirlwind, six-hour visit to Ottawa on Thursday.

Ignatieff said Obama was a politician with "style, but also enormous substance," who is a thoughtful, focused and capable leader.

"This is a really substantial politician and I think Canadians can feel better knowing he's at the helm," he said.

The two politicians talked about cross-border trade issues and the war in Afghanistan, among other topics.

Ignatieff said he made it clear to the president that Canada did not intend to stay in Afghanistan beyond 2011.

And he said Obama indicated that many Americans have the same questions about the Afghanistan mission that Canadians have asked themselves.

"I said to him: 'Look, Mr. President, Canadians are asking: Where is this mission going? What are we trying to accomplish?'" Ignatieff said.

"And he laughed and said to me: 'A lot of people in the White House are asking the same question.'"

Ignatieff said he told Obama that Canada should be part of the strategic review of Afghanistan that the U.S. is currently conducting.

The two men also talked about the border.

"I took him through the border issue, because I think it's a choke chain on our economy," Ignatieff said.

"He was very receptive to that. He's from a northern state, he knows how much of our trade crosses the border, sometimes four or five times a day."

"We make things together, he understands that and he doesn't want us to stop making things together. So, that was positive," Ignatieff added.

Despite reports that some Liberals were frustrated about the brief time Ignatieff had with the president, the Liberal leader said it was not an issue.

"I'd meet that guy in a phone booth," Ignatieff joked. "I was very happy with the meeting, it was great."

Why would an opposition leader want to meet with the President? Is the Prime Minister meeting with the Republican leader? Is Iggy that confident that he will be the next leader and is therefore laying the ground work? Why is he promising that Canada will be out of Afganistan by 2011??

Barack and Michael look very relaxed together. Bet THEY were on a first-name basis.

Nice to see Iggy get his time, and he brought up some good points, we all want what's best for our trrops overseas. Looks like no matter who is going to be PM we will have a good relationship with the US! Got to like Obama though, he is the real deal, and fantastic for people. He literally is the PR dept for the White House. It's nice to see a leader in this world smile and laugh honestly, not faking it like a few others in the past have done! Also can't wait to see where the enviromental talks go, very excited about that, hopefully Harper has changed his tune regarding that, but I want to commend the PM on the improvement he has made regarding national security.

Once again, WHO CARES?!!

This seeming hero worship of the US president is nauseating, even more so by the Liberal leader, as he is only the opposition leader, and his opinion on the matters discussed is, frankly, irrelevant.

Obama must have chuckled all the way home to Washington at the fawning behavior of Mr. Ignatieff.

A very amateurish and embarassing showing by Ignatieff. Three things stand out about Ignatieff's comments: First, it is not Ignatieff's job to "make it clear that Canada does not intend to stay in Afghanistan". Ignatieff does not speak for Canada - He speaks only for the official opposition. Second, it is totally inappropriate for Ignatieff to quote the President's throw-away line about the concerns of Whitehouse officials regarding the direction of the Afghanistan mission. I doubt the President would be impressed by Ignatieff repeating comments that were clearly not meant for a public audience. Third, the fact that President Obama has such a strong understanding of the importance of Canada-U.S. relations is a sign that PM Harper's meeting with the President was a great success.

I know Iggy must be doing well as everyone and their uncle are gunning for him now. Everyone's a critic and he can do no right. The view is pretty good from the cheap seats. Go Iggy!

What I found most interesting of this entire visit was Mr Ignatieff and his behaviour. He lost a lot of credibility in my opinion. He was growing on me and I was getting comfortable with his style, but his behaviour before, during and after the visit has shown me that he is (1) a cry baby for wanting his 20min just like Harper got in 2004, (2) he was idol-stricken like a teenager at a rock concert, and (3) he is dangerously over-estimating Canada's position in the eyes of the U.S. We are an ESSENTIAL ally to the U.S.? The President knows how important we are? Let's be careful not to inflate our egos, we could end up having a bruised ego sooner or later. That said, I agree with Mr Ignatieff's assessment that Mr Obama's personality seems genuine, and not a "PR face". That bodes well for Canada, but let's realize that it also bodes well for the rest of the world.

It's the beginning of the Liberal agenda thoughout North America.

Once the laws are all Liberalized, not sure what the relivants of Law Enforcement will mean, most likely hold any Conservative to Human Rights Tribunals.

wtf! Ignatieff has no say in any of the policies such as afghanistan!! It says he made it clear! It's not his job to make anything clear to Obama, that would be Steven Harpers job. Butt out liberals you don't speak for Canada, the PM does!

How in any way is it inappropriate for Iggy to relay the concerns Obama said Americans have about Afghanistan? Obama knowing about border issues doesn't mean the meeting with Harper was a success, it means he's the U.S. president. You don't think he was briefed just a little bit before he left Washington? Oh and when Iggy says Canadians want out of Afghanistan by 2011, he's merely repeating what both Parliament and the Conservative gov't said.

It continues to amaze me how many people do not understand the protocol for visits of foriegn leaders. Whether it be the US President to Canada, England, Australia, France etc. It is protocol that he also meet with the leader of the official opposition of that country. When Harper was in opposition he was provided with the opportunity to have an even longer than ten minute meetin with George W. Bush.

Marion,
Um, because he is the official opposition leader and we have a minority government in play. As for being out of Afghanistan by 2011, he's saying that because that is the level of commitment we have given. Or are you suggesting Harper is currently lying to us about the length of time we are supposed to be there?

Why no mention of Bob Rae being there too? He's a progressive anxiously waiting to get into power too even if he won't become PM. While I have no objection to Ignatieff meeting with the President, why was there such a fuss about how much time he would get? Looks like he got more time anyway. Other than what is reported here, what did he have to say that was any different from our PM? I guess he just wanted the photo ops too to show Canadians he's ready to lead while professing his admiration for President Obama too.

If some people would pay attention: they would see that it was Obama's cheif of staff that asked for more time between Obama and Ignatieff. Pay attention people!

It's amazing how so few people understand the rules of diplomacy and protocol.

The Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition, Michael Ignatieff, has every right to an audience with a foreign diplomat as much as the Speakers of the House and Senate do.

Perhaps you may want to learn the Order of Precedence for the Country. It would help you in answering the misguided question of some as to why the opposition is meeting with Obama. It's certainly not a coup d'état.
