Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff will discuss Canada-U.S. border issues and energy initiatives with U.S. President Barack Obama when they meet later today.
Ignatieff told CTV News he is looking forward to his meeting with the president and will make the most of it, even though they are officially scheduled for only 15 minutes.
He said he would be raising issues that are important to Canadians and Canada.
"I don't think you advise the president of the United States, you defend Canadian interests and the key Canadian interest that I see is the border," Ignatieff said. "It's becoming a choke chain for both our economies and we have to work together to reduce the barriers between the United States and Canada."
He said he will also raise common concerns about energy issues, from improving the shared electricity grid to constructing natural gas pipelines that can easily flow fuel across the border.
"There's so much that we can do together if we invest in the relationship, and they invest in the relationship. This is a day to fire Mr. Obama up with the excitement of collaborating with a good neighbour and a good friend."
Ignatieff also said Canada and the U.S. need to work together to "find our way" in Afghanistan.
"I think we can say honestly to the president that we're a bit lost at the moment, our guys don't know what we're doing out there and we've got to find our way, we've got to find a strategic direction for the NATO mission there," he said.
Ignatieff, a former Harvard professor, said he and Obama have some mutual friends, but said he has kept the relationship strictly professional.
"I want to make it clear I have had no communications around the side with these people that I know in the administration because I don't think that's appropriate," he said.
"I think Canada should speak with one voice when we meet the president of the United States."
Ignatieff's formal rival for the Liberal leadership, Bob Rae, will be with him when he visits with Obama. Rae told CTV News that in some areas, Obama may have more in common with the Opposition than Harper.
"Clearly on Guantanamo, we're probably closer to the president than Mr. Harper," said Rae. "Mr. Harper is about the last Western leader who actually thinks Guantanamo is a great idea."
While Rae's presence might cut down on his own personal interaction with Obama, Ignatieff said more importantly it will demonstrate the depth of the official Opposition.
"I think it will show to the president that we have a formidable front bench team to serve as his partner when we get into government, so it was an easy call from my point of view."
Ignatieff said he might even find out whether there's truth to reports that Obama has read some of his books, though he joked that the president might use them as a "cure for insomnia."
"You know my books are not exactly thrillers so he may put them on his bedside table to go to sleep," Ignatieff said.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

The fact is sir that Canadians elected someone to speak for us on the national and international stage. That would be the Prime Minister. Your own Liberal Party didn't even vote for you to speak for your party.
You are not a government in waiting, you are a political opportunist who weaseled himself into Stonoway.

Mr. Ignatieff is getting 15 minutes. The next government in Canada will likely be lead by a Liberal.

"...when Harper was leader of the opposition in 2004, he had a "good and extended meeting" with then-president George W. Bush."
Harper was not the Prime Minister at that time. Why the double standard now?

People need to stop criticizing Ignatieff and let him do his job. He has not requested anything different than any other opposition leader.

The appointed leader of a morally (and financially) bankrupt opposition party that garnered barely 25% of votes cast in the last election "demanding" he get 30 minutes to speak to the US president?
Frankly, if Ignatieff wants to make the most of his limited time with Obama, he should focus on the topics of "grass-roots democracy", "broad-based support", and "fundraising 101", and look to apply these "foreign" concepts to the Liberal party.

Canadian Government cannot print up of few $ trillion Cdn dollars of our own also! The USA is a 3rd world country right now...they just have not examined all their fiat banks yet! Also, That is not just low quality crude from the Alberta Tarsands! I was one of only 2 who use to make up the 30 page daily production reports when I was a young man! It is highly refined kero, jet fuel, diesel fuel, naphtha etc., that only requires a simple upgrading process on the USA side. We should be getting far more $ /bbl for it! We are left the clean-up!

Whose voice did he mean? The voice of the person who leads the party that was elected by the Canadian Public? Or the individual that was appointed by his peers within the darn near bankrupt party to be the leader of the non-elected party?
Canada has ONE leader Mr. Ignatieff NOT two!! And I highly doubt that you will ever be given the priviledge of being the PM!!

How many times do they need to be told, they don't represent the majority of Canadians despite their kool aid drinking buddies like to scream they do.
The leader of the opposition is afforded the courtesy, as was Harper who it seems was allowed to meet GB for 20 minutes. It's quite telling to watch them scream and holler, over such a insignificant thing, taking such offense at the very notion that someone other than their dear leader have the opportunity to meet the new US president.
A real example of true, conservative grace

Have any of you actually read his wiki? His resume? The dude is easily more right wing and conservative than Harper, but that won't stop weak minds from portraying Harper like Bush and Ignatief like a hippy.
You dont like the mission in Afghanistan? Well then dont vote for Iggy. You don't like stronger connections to the US? Then don't vote for iggy.
For crying out loud why dont you put down the picculi pipe and pick up a book for once in your lives?

So is iggie just going to take over as PM without getting elected. Oh that could be true . Isn't that how he became the opposition leader? And you people are ok with that. Why don't you just move to a country that doesn't have a choice. Obviously it is ok with you.

I don't know why the Harperites can't understand that it is protocol for foreign leaders to meet with the Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition. What is so hard to understand? We have an alternative Prime Minister on hand at all times.
We're not in the US. We do not have a President standalone. We have a co-operative, joint government. Harper has no right to be so exclusionist.
This is Canada's moment with Obama, and Harper should not have interfered to the extent that he has done. It's going to backfire on him - because he just looks clunky by comparison, where he would have benefited by having other people around him to mitigate, or diffuse his very awkward personality. As it is - he's sticking out there like a bump on a log next to the charming Obama.
Harper just isn't likeable - and he is lacking the ability to pick up on non-verbal cues as well.
He should not have stood beside Obama at the doors of Parliament, waving at the people. That was OBAMA's moment with the Canadian people, and Harper should have had the grace to wave once maybe, and then stand aside to let Obama and the people connect. It just looked awful.

As to the border issue,I think Liberals and NDPers need to remember, that the USA need s to protect it's citizens. That is their first duty. And,that the reason the border is becoming harder to cross is that Liberals failed to participate in the defense of North America in any meaningful way. That left the USA with no other option than to monitor it's border more closely. As they should.
Iggy just wants to vie for political advantage by reminding Obama that he knows lots of people in the Democratic party, and that they shared the same citizenship for 3 decades.
BTW.If Iggy wants more Liberals in the west,he's off to a bad start. We know the difference between his political spin and any REAL policies that recognize the west as a part of Canada.
Get off your butt Iggy and speak out in favour of REAL changes to the Senate and a REAL and EQUAL voice for western Canadians.Recognize and atone for Liberal bias against the west, for the theft by NEP,and that the Liberal patriation of the constitution without Quebec and Senate reform has been a disaster for unity.
It makes me ashamed to admit I was a Liberal, and a supporter of the late, and Rt.Hon.P.Trudeau.There is no denying, good intentions aside,we were just plain wrong on so many issues. It's time Liberals admitted that too.Or,failing that amount of courage,at least came up with new and better policies.
NO MORE SOCIALISM!!!

This meeting between Iggy and Obama stinks and undermines the authority of the PM and waters down the official message from the Govt of Canada. Its like Iggy is saying "if you don't like where the Govt of Canada stands on any issues, let me know and I'll give them a hard time about it." like a grade school punk trying to curry favour with the popular kid in class.
What's next? Is Iggy going to steal Harper's lunch money for Obama?

It would have been ideal, and most Canadian, to have arranged for Obama to meet with Messrs. Ignatieff, Layton, Duceppe and Ms. May (the Real Green)-- if only for 5 minutes, to show Obama that Canada, thank Zeus!, does NOT speak with Harper's One Dictatorial Voice, but represents truly progressive elements similar to those of his current administration that includes Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice.
For Harper to hypocritically change his Bush-inspired neanderthal tune on the environment, not to mention issues affecting human rights (including those of women), is so transparent. Guess there's no limit to what Stevie Wonder will do to keep his job these days!...

Although I don't agree with some of his policies, Obama will likely see right through Iggy as the opportunist that he is. I think he is sensitive enough to see what an effective leader Harper is. Anti Harper people can whine all they want. Canada is in much better shape than the rest of the world because you have a person at the helm who uses common sense and who is an economist. It's not about popularity..its about survival in a society that is teetering on depression.
Keep it up Iggy. Show your true colours.

Could it be Obama and Ignatieff have the same vision for North America or Harper's totarianism will be more visible when Obama speaks to Iggy.
Whatever the reason. You all look scared as hell. If you really think Harper is the greatest than you wouldn't care if Ignatieff and Obama spend a week talking.

Get over the math, it no longer means anything.
As far as Michael Ignatieff's meeting the President. Good for him. He gets some face time and a lovely photo op behind which there is NO substance. Mr. Obama knows who the Leader of Canada is, and it wasn't the man who was shaking his hand just before boarding Air Force One.

I would love to know when Iggy got any control over our borders or our resources. Last time I checked he wasn’t elected to lead this country.
“We need to find our way” in Afghanistan? I didn’t think we were lost. Maybe we should follow that road we paved. Our guys don’t know what they are doing? Is that why they are training ppl?
One thing I have learned watch politicians. When they say there is no side talk without being asked, you can bet your bottom dollar there is.

How about Obama spends time with a guy who doesn't keep his word, had to call on mommy to win an election, promotes hate ads, possible link to bribing a member of parliament and had no clue that Canada was headed into a recession. Harper and his administration is one big embarrassing blunder. Obama shouldn't give Harper the time of day.

I agree, the opposition shouldn't meet with the President for this first meeting, Harper shouldn't have either in 2004. If we are to have 1 voice internationally as a country, they shouldn't have meetings with the leaders of the opposition, doesn't make much sense.
