President Hugo Chavez says this weekend's referendum victory that removed limits on his re-election is a mandate from the Venezuelan people to intensify his socialist agenda.
But opponents warn the country is moving further into a full dictatorship.
Electoral authorities said Sunday that 54 per cent of voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow all public officials to run for re-election as many times as they want.
The change removes barriers to letting Chavez run in the next presidential elections in 2012, allowing him to stay in office until he is defeated at the polls. His current term ends in 2013.
Chavez, 54, who has already been in power since 1998, had argued the constitutional changes would allow him to advance his socialist ideals in the country, fight crime and corruption and resist U.S. influence in the region.
He claimed he needs at least another decade to finalize Venezuela's transition to socialism.
"Those who voted 'yes' today voted for socialism, for revolution," Chavez told thousands of ecstatic supporters jamming the streets around the presidential palace Sunday.
"In 2012 there will be presidential elections, and unless God decides otherwise, unless the people decide otherwise, this soldier is already a candidate," Chavez said to applause.
"Today, we opened wide the gates of the future. Venezuela will not return to its past of indignity."
Chavez's opponents see him as a power-hungry autocrat who is bent on turning Venezuela into a replica of communist Cuba. They say he unfairly has used state revenue to finance his campaigns with huge rallies and constant TV appearances.
"Today, Goliath won," opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez said.
The referendum deeply divided the country.
Fifty-two-year-old Yira Guerra suggested she supported Chavez because she believes his policies allowed her two children to get a free college education.
"My son got a bachelor's degree," Guerra said, adding that such social programs would disappear if another leader took power.
However, 50-year-old Carmen Gilarte charged that longer presidential terms breed corruption.
"We don't want anybody to stay perpetually in power," Gilarte said. "We have to give opportunities to the next generation."
Chavez dismissed the concerns, saying former U.S. president Franklin Roosevelt was elected four times.
"Ten years is nothing. I don't know what they're complaining about."
Opposition parties boycotted the 2005 congressional elections, giving Chavez a stranglehold on the National Assembly and allowing him to pack the Supreme Court with his allies. Critics also note that Chavez effectively controls the National Electoral Council.
Chavez has remained a popular leader by using vast oil revenues to boost social programs, such as literacy classes and benefits for single mothers. He has also cultivated closer relationships with American adversaries, such as Cuba and Iran.
But his opponents argue that if he is allowed to remain in power for another 10 years, checks on his authority will continue to erode.
"Effectively this will become a dictatorship," opposition leader Omar Barboza told The Associated Press.
"It's control of all the powers, lack of separation of powers, unscrupulous use of state resources, persecution of adversaries."

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Simply make the people feel so good, and give them anything they want. Then they will give you ultimate power. From there...freedom, choice, and elections are simply ...gone.
Carey...how very simplistic an assessment. There isn't any more democracy ...that's the point. Chavez can rule with an iron fist like his buddies in Iran and North Korea. That worled out well for the people. hmm How wonderful for the people, eh Carey.

Have a close look at the privileged opposition [including the students], find out who's funding them, then have a look at what's really happening in the barrios. I know who I trust.
The people don't HAVE to vote for Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution, but they have.

Socialism is so intoxicating when your government provides you with a "free" appetizer and dessert. It takes your mind off the fact that your illustrious government eats most of the main course itself, after forcing you to cook the entire meal.
It's truly touching that Chavez supported a democratic reform that allows him to tighten his grip on power.
Socialism requires either healthy capitalism or the wealth of natural resources to feed it; otherwise, it eats itself from the inside out, and the system implodes. Always. It can never stand on its own...without moving left to dictatorship and communism.
Thumbs up, Venezuela. Good luck with that.

Thank you for your insight, but the reality that no one is perfect !!
I live in Toronto & I hear about people dying for no reason but crime every day, I am sure you do too.
Selling goods in the street is better than being a homeless or asking for change at the corner of Toronto streets.
I make 85k$/annually but the cost of living is so high that I can’t afford to have a brother or sister for my only child.
Overall, Chavez has done well for his people.. Giving back 50$ of the 100$ you make is better than giving back nothing !!

He has done much to help lift the indigenous people of the country up but in doing so he has trampled on the right's of those who not only had created the country's economy but the entrepreneur's that will sustain it.These economic experiment's have never succeeded in the past nor will this one's fate be any different. This will only lead to economic stagnation and higher inflation as such staple's as food and other essential good's become too expensive to produce locally due to inefficiency's.This will result in government subsidy's which will further fuel inflation and in turn result in further stagnation as a drain of talent leave's the country.
This socialist dream of Chavez's will turn into a nightmare as this will only result in further hardship for the people thus resulting in political and social discontent. This leave's only to further intrusion by the state into civil liberty's as the state will use whatever mean's necessary to maintain control and enforce their agenda.
The past has not been kind to many of these south american country's as the polarization of political ideal's has only brought hardship and lost opportunity to the people as a result of replacing one form of dictatorship for another.
Hopefully they can find a middle ground but looking at Chavez's past policy's and future agenda I would have to say they are going down a well travelled path that will provide the people of that country with little to hope for.

Thank you for your insight. I knew it was bad, I didn't realize it was that bad. Even with all that propoganda Chavez still only managed 54% of the vote. And that was the 3rd try if I'm not mistaken. It's a sad sad day for Venezuela for they have forgone democracy in favour of a socialist dictatorship. To the poster who mentioned their son got a free university education - what good is that if there's no job waiting for him? That's where Venezuela is evolving.
