Like the movie of the same name, this Groundhog Day has seen the same sad message repeat itself: we're in for six more weeks of winter.

The three groundhogs that North Americans turn to in hopes of hearing of an early spring have all emerged from their dens to see their shadows - meaning the winter weather will be sticking around.

The first one out with his prediction was Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam, who emerged, along with his shadow, from his den at 8 a.m. local time.

A town crier and the sound of bagpipes lured Sam out of his home at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, which is about an hour north of Halifax.

Not long after, central Ontario's Wiarton Willie emerged from his den to an adoring crowd of about 200 people. He, too, saw his shadow.

Willie had not seen his shadow in the last four years and he's only seen it seven times in 20 years.

Meanwhile, Willie and Sam's American counterpart, Punxsutawney Phil, also predicted six more weeks of winter after emerging from his Pennsylvania home.

Phil's forecast came in front of thousands of onlookers at Gobbler's Knob, which is about 100 kilometres north of Pittsburgh.

According to German tradition, if a hibernating animal casts its shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last six more weeks. If there is no shadow, spring is supposed to come early, which would have been welcome to many Canadians.

Many parts of Canada have posted record or near-record snowfalls with seven more weeks officially left of winter.

I'd be **ssed too if I'd been woken up in early a.m. by bagpipes and screaming people and hope I saw my shadow.

Unfortuntely i'm not in the mood for more winter :(

Boooooo

Sam's prediction is really no prediction at all. If you look at the calendar, you will see that in six weeks it will be the first of spring. What they should be saying is that Sam is predicting 6 more weeks of snow, sleet and ice for the remaining 6 weeks of winter.

Kathy from Ottawa

I don't get it. Six more weeks IS an early spring!

dawn

thanks Sam and Willie...just what we need 6 more weeks of winter.....doesn't matter what the calendar says it would have been nice to see the snow leave early.

Eric
said

James, seriously... you're trying to argue that there's a flaw in the way groundhogs predict the future?

kate
said

I'm with Rick on this one..lol. If someone woke me up from my warm comfy den with bagpipes blaring..I'd be cursing you with 6 more weeks of miserable weather too. Poor little guy - he must think we're all nuts!

James
said

To Eric;
It's Monday, I'm sorry. The only flaw in the system is that people get too worked up over the fact that we use a rodent to tell us the obvious.
Now, if Willie or Sam could predict the last snow storm of the winter season, that would be something to write home about.

DAMN it, I hate Winter! But i feel sorry for the little guy who gets yanked out of his hole to predict if we are having a longer winter or early spring. I bet he's in his hole right now Laughing his *ss off LOL.

I am in Florida until May, do you think Winter will be over by then. Is there any way to get Willie to do a repeat performance.

"The legend of Groundhog Day is founded on an old Scottish couplet or saying:
"If Candlesmas Day is bright and clear, There'll be two winters in the year."
Candlemas is the 40th day after Christmas."

So let Wiarton Willie's "prediction" put a smile on your face and take it in fun! Enjoy! I know this article made me smile this morning.

Groundhog day is a joke in northern Ontario. I can tell you what the outcome will be in any given year.
At least 6 more weeks of winter. I've never seen my predictions fail yet.

Kathy
said

Oh please people this is canada of course theres 6 more weeks of winter. We don't need a groundhog to tell us that but we do look fowarad to it because it is our first thought of spring coming so willie & sam
Thank You

JP
said

Its just a groundhog! Who cares really! Like he is gonna make our winter longer or spring come sooner. I could care less, jus enjoy what we already have and take it one day at a time! Its really not at all that accurate I think. Just a day to bug that poor little guy! lol

so if he see his shadow it means 6 more week of winter, and if he doesn't see his shadow what happen?

Nik

The one day (it seems) this winter we have sunshine and semi warm weather, with birds chirping and animals coming out of hibernation... happens to be the ONE day we dont want it to be! Why couldnt one of those record snowfall days have sent sam and willie and phil a hiding from the elements, rather than their shadows...
And let me get this straight... if we know that winter "officially" ends in 6 weeks... does that mean that we will still have snow 6 weeks after that? because here in ontario, snow in april happens every year anyway! LOL
Happy groundhog day everyone!

The snow in my backyard is too high for the groundhogs to stick their noses out, so must still be winter duh!!! The cardinals nesting in my snow-covered cedars only dare come out to fill up at the feeder, so must be winter duh!! The white stuff coming from the skies, could it still be winter for a while yet???

Did anyone think to ask their predictions on the global economy? Everyone else seems to have an opinion.

Wake up people! All you have to do is check the weather for that day. If it is sunny of course he will see his shadow. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure that out. Every year it seems to make the news. You want an early spring? Hope for a cloudy day eh.

M. Cameron
said

Yeah right! Say that in northern Ontario and people will laugh at you. Winter will be around for a few more months here.

Michelle

The groundhogs should predict the liklihood of your roof leaking instead. Waking up to warm sun and seeing your shadow in early February usually means thousands of Canadians will be mopping up leaks caused by melting ice on their roof.Like me in Ottawa this morning.

Last year he did not see his shadow, yet on the third week of April we had 6 inches of snow here on Vancouver Island, BC. That's record breaking long-winter for us. I'm glad he saw his shadow because I believe the opposite to be true here in the west. When he sees his shadow and it's a short winter here.

I love winter!

I am sick of hearing people complaining about the weather. THIS IS CANADA!!!! if you dont like the winter or snow then move somewhere else!!!

Brian in Galway
said

Well we don't have any Wiarton Willies or Shubbie Sams here in Ireland, all we have is sunny mild spring weather. Actually yesterday (February 1) is the official start of spring here so you can keep you snow, sleet and negative temperatures across the pond.

Groundhog day should be made a national holiday!

Now everybody take the rest of the day off!

Our prediction was he would see his shadow, but we didn't really want him too.

6 more weeks means winter ends in the middle of march.

Come to Edmonton....the groundhogs are still sleeping mid-march. It'll be mid-April before the thaw.

Here's a plan, why don't they wake these little guys up when the sun goes down, or beneath a cloud :)

Heather
said

I'm with the others who don't get how 6 weeks more winter means a longer winter. We have snow til mid April. If winter ended at the end of March that would be a SHORT winter!

Canada is winter, Shubie shoudl try again in April
said

Not to hard to predict 6 more weeks of winter early February in Canada.

They way global warming is going here these days, we are lucky it it's not 6 more mornhs of winter.

We should do that test in April only and if he is wrong you could blame it on April fools day!

Cathy
said

These little guys "work" one day a year and get so much attention..sort of like a reality show :)

Now that it's a longer winter they will be dreaming of ways to take over my garden!

Darth Razmus
said

Thats a good idea dave. Next year if he sees his shadow 6 more months of recession.

John in BC

I hope we only get 6 more weeks of winter, since that would mean that winter would be over by March 14th. Doesn't winter usually last until sometime into April in this country? (And well into June for NFLD?)

Tracy Workman

OK Furr balls.... then 6 more weeks it is... have a good nap.

KW

Never mind the groundhogs. I could have told you we're going to have six more weeks of winter!

And whether they see their shadows would depend if the sun is shining.

I'm with edCP - all imposters other than Willie. Like there is more than one Santa Claus....HA!

I think that the whole concept of Groundhog day is silly and ridiculous.

People in Canada have to accept that we have four seasons and we should make the best of it. I belong to a ski club and I cross country ski most weekends.

Grover The Groundhog
said

6 more weeks of winter? No problem. I'll just climb back into my hole and hibernate until the warmer weather arrives.

Sammy the Squirrel
said

Well if you ask me, living here in Canada, there is probably at least 5 months more of winter and right after the May 24 weekend, summer usually shows up.

Richard from Ontario
said

To "Chuck" To answer your question, I remember an expression my dear departed Dad used to use.
If the groundhog sees his shadow there'll be six more weeks of winter.. If he doesn't see it, it means 42 more days of winter.

Tiff of Halifax
said

Okay, barring the obvious about the whole thing being silly, does anyone know why a sunny day means more winter and a non-sunny day means less? Shouldn't it be the opposite of that? I've always been confused about a tradition that makes seeing the sun a bad thing.

I think no matter what he sees we're pretty much unfortunatly guaranteed 6 or more weeks of winter weather...

I can do six weeks standing on my head
said

Excuse me but there are 52 weeks in a year. Divided by the 4 seasons you get thirteen weeks per season. Winter started around the 20th of Dec., 44 days ago. 6.714 Weeks of winter left. Winter, That season of the year when the daylight hours are less than the dark hours but getting longer. It snows every season in Canada so pay attention to the real indicator of spring. More daylight time than dark time and daylight time getting longer.

Catherine in Ottawa

Hey, did you hear university students across the country saw their shadows this morning? Another 9 weeks of classes, not counting reading week and exams. *Sigh.*

Groundhog Day is just about as reliable as the "science" behind the Global-Warming Theory.

Although I prefer the little hogs prediction of no more than 6 more weeks of winter rather than thinking back to the incredibly cold & record-breaking snowfalls of just last year, which lasted until late-March/early-April!

lol..Can we get a new groundhog? this one is confused....Haven't we suffered enough !

when is that last time he DIDNT see his shadow??? when i was 10!! and i am 30 now :PP

Michelle in TO

Tiff in Halifax I have two answers for you. One: in winter, sunny days tend to feel colder because there's no cloudy blanket keeping insulating you from all the bad old wind. And Two (more likely): some German guy created a superstition about it and it stuck. Which means it's about as logical as why Santa goes down the chimney and not through the window.

Its a good thing we have something to laugh about this time of year...because its a long haul till spring...
