Men who are very sexually active in their twenties and thirties are at greater risk for developing prostate cancer, a new study suggests, especially if they are frequent masturbators.
British researchers asked more than 800 men - about 400 cancer patients and 400 who do not have cancer - about their sexual history, including the number of partners they have had, how frequently they have sex and how often they masturbate.
Among other findings, the team learned that men with prostate cancer were among the subjects who reported having sex with the greatest frequency.
Of the subjects who had been diagnosed with cancer:
- Forty per cent of men in their twenties fell in the highest frequency category, reporting that they had sex 20 or more times per month, compared to 32 per cent in the control group.
- Thirty-four per cent of men in their twenties reported that they masturbated frequently, compared to 24 per cent in the control group.
One theory to explain the link could be that having higher sex hormone levels not only leads to a higher sex drive, but also to a higher risk of cancer, the researchers said.
"Hormones appear to play a key role in prostate cancer and it is very common to treat men with therapy to reduce the hormones thought to stimulate the cancer cells," lead study author Dr. Polyxeni Dimitropoulou, of the University of Nottingham, said in a statement. "A man's sex drive is also regulated by his hormone levels, so this study examined the theory that having a high sex drive affects the risk of prostate cancer."
The level of the men's sexual activity when they were in their forties and fifties did not increase their prostate cancer risk.
In fact, even a low level of sexual activity in their fifties appeared to offer a small amount of protection against the disease.
Dimitropoulou said further research is needed to determine how sexual activity may offer protection for older men.
The findings are published in the journal BJU International.
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canadian men.
The Canadian Cancer Society estimated that more than 24,000 men would be diagnosed with the disease in 2008, and 4,300 would die of it.
Prostate cancer has no single cause, but a man's risk increases as he gets older. Recent research has linked obesity, low levels of physical activity and eating a high-fat diet to an increased risk of developing the disease.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.

Seems to me the last report from whichever source indicated research showed that more frequent ejaculation actually reduced the statistics of prostate cancer.

Either way, I think a lot of guys would be in trouble if this research is true. Also, I don't think a guy at the age of 20/30 will change their lifestyle because of what could happen to them later down the road...

The last report published said the exact opposite. Time we threw these scientists in the same room and let them realize how useless the studies are until everyone agrees on a process and a result.

Is this a national tragedy? Do we get a ribbon now? Will there be calls of discrimination due to the lack of interest by politicians and the medical community for dying men?
I'm guessing probably not. Interesting though.

The reason for why cancer is so prevalent in our society is because we're exposed our bodies to a constant bombardment of chemicals (in food, water, air, homes, products that we use, etc.) that likely triggers these dormant cells into action. I bet that this study is funded by the religious right, which views sex as a dirty thing. Who's to say that the study isn't flawed anyways. I'm sure that all the guys in the survey who have had prostate cancer probably exaggerated their sexual history and in fact had a limited sex life. As a result, the data is skewed.
If I'm wrong, oh well... low risk comes with no reward. I'll take my chances and keep having sex.

Everyone dies. The question is, how miserable do you want to be during those last 10-20 years when you regret everything you could have done when all your parts still worked!

Making a cancer link by asking someone how often they masturbated 20 years ago ranks right up there with making a claim for extraterrestrial existance based on hearing accounts from your grandfather when he was a kid and saw a movie about it.
The sample size was under a thousand. It was all British men and most likely from the same town.
For a scientific study, the word 'theory' get's used far too often.
This was a university project that for some reason or another has been misinterpreted as real 'science'.
If there were any truth to this what so ever...it's extremely doubtful that mankind could have made it this long without becoming extinct.
This ridiculous, 'study' would have you believe that procreating in our youth causes cancer.
Which of course means this is an adaptation in evolution.
So why are we all still here?
Because this story is crap.

I suppose the next Medical Report to hit the headlines will be an intensive study by a whole host of medical practitioners, stating that after exhaustive tests involving thousands of study participants, that BIRTH leads to DEATH...say it ain't so..NONE of us is gonna die....surely???

Things in the past 10 years that have been "linked to an increase risk of cancer": masturbation, sex, milk, cell phones, newspaper ink, broccoli, electrical appliances, cell phones, microwaves, cigarettes, alcohol, air pollution, vitamin deficiencies, weight gain, weight loss, wood dust, water (bottles and municipal), baby food, charred meat, meats in general, fruit and vegetables (pesticides...), nuts, the sun, chocolate, gasoline, your genetic material, medication, laxatives, weight pills, diets, carbohydrates, fatty foods, salts, etc, etc, etc...
I'd rather have a life expectancy between 60 and 75 and enjoy life than live a very boring life "safely" to 100.
Eat, drink, have sex, travel, make friends, party, read...do whatever you find enjoyable. Just use common sense. Enjoy life, have a good time, and stop worrying so much about all the little things. Last of all, enjoy a tall glass of milk, have sex with your partner, and then go polish one off...

And for the guys who said this study contradicts an earlier one showng more masturbation could protect against prostate cancer:
The earlier studies looked at CURRENT masturbation in the age group most at risk, and this study agrees that masturbaation after age 40 or 50 is not harmful and is related to lower risk.
The issue here is YOUTHFUL masturbation frequency, so these studies do not disagree at all.
