As part of his commemoration of John F. Kennedy's inauguration on January 20, 1961, American poet Robert Frost wrote that "summoning artists to participate" in "august occasions of the state" is something "artists ought to celebrate."

Back then, when celebrity culture was not ubiquitously dominated by Hollywood, Frost was one of the biggest names on the JFK inauguration ticket.

On Tuesday, poet Elizabeth Alexander will read at president-elect Barack Obama's inaugural address. She, like many modern literary figures, is not a household name as Frost once was, but there will be plenty of familiar faces in attendance at inaugural events.

In fact, the list of well-known actors, musicians, and renowned personalities is extensive and ranges from the world's top rappers to premier chefs. Here are some of the prominent people who'll attend or perform at various events to commemorate Obama's inauguration.

Elizabeth Alexander

Elizabeth Alexander

Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, playwright and professor at Yale University. She has written five books of poetry, including "American Sublime," which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005. Alexander -- who will become only the fourth poet to recite a poem for a presidential inauguration -- is the daughter of former United States Secretary of the Army Clifford Alexander, Jr., and her mother is a historian who specializes in African-American women's history.

Elizabeth Alexander

Aretha Franklin

There won't be a shortage of good music for audiophiles of all tastes during inauguration week. Soul icon Aretha Franklin will perform for the incoming president on the steps of the Capitol building on Tuesday as part of the swearing-in ceremony. She has said she is excited "to be part of this special moment in American history and in African-American history." (She will also play a free concert at the Kennedy Center with Nuttin' But Stringz and the Let Freedom Ring Choir on Monday.)

Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen and company

Music fans should tune in Sunday to the free star-studded concert on the National Mall, starting at 2:30 p.m.

Among the many performers: Bruce Springsteen, U2, Beyonce, Usher, Garth Brooks, Stevie Wonder, John Mellencamp, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Josh Groban, John Legend and James Taylor.

Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III and Queen Latifah will read. Obama will stop by and HBO will broadcast "We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial." (HBO Canada will carry it live; other stations are invited to carry the concert and might pick it up.)

Hollywood goes to Washington

Although the Obama team had touted their fundraising success from donors who gave small amounts of cash by the millions for his campaign, his inauguration committee went to some of Hollywood's biggest names to fund next week's inaugural events.

At least 378 of the 2,000 inaugural donors gave the maximum $50,000 -- and many of them were Hollywood insiders.

Some of the top contributors -- and stars likely to be seen at a variety of inaugural events -- include Barbra Streisand, who performed at Bill Clinton's inauguration, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Familiar names also include Steven Spielberg, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, and directors Ron Howard and George Lucas.

Prominent personalities

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has been so excited about inauguration week that the news media reported she didn't think twice about challenging fate before Obama's election. As one of Obama's earliest backers, she apparently bought her inaugural gown even before his victory in November.

Oprah will do Monday's show live from the Kennedy Centre, and do a second episode Wednesday from Washington, D.C.

Other concerts

  • BET will hold an awards ceremony, the BET Honors, Saturday at the Warner Theater to honor Mary J. Blige, filmmaker Tyler Perry, Earvin "Magic" Johnson and others. Gabrielle Union will host and performers include Queen Latifa, Ne-Yo, Anita Baker and Joss Stone.
  • The Hip-hop Caucus will host a concert Saturday at Ibiza with Common, Blige and Nelly.
  • Jessica Alba will host a kickoff event by youth voter initiative Declare Yourself on Sunday dubbed "A New Birth of Citizenship." Maroon 5 and DJ Samantha Ronson will perform, and Jamie Foxx and Legend will attend.
  • "Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future" will be held Monday night at the Verizon Center and air on the Disney Channel. Performing will be Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Bow Wow. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will host with their families.
  • The "America Feels Kinda Cool Again Inaugural Gala" will feature the Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow and Citizen Cope on Monday at the 9:30 club.
  • Jay-Z will perform a concert -- "In Concert on the Eve on Change" -- at the Warner Theater on Monday.
  • Manifest Hope will finish a three-day-long, Inauguration-themed art exhibit with a party featuring performances by Santogold, Moby and De La Soul.

Everyone loves a parade

NASA astronauts will also make an appearance at events on Tuesday, taking part in the inaugural parade in the afternoon. But they won't likely be the main attraction. The real star may be NASA's lunar rover. Michael Gernhardt will drive the dozen-wheeled pressurized moon buggy.

The parade is probably the place most people will get a chance to see their favorite political stars -- as senators and other elected officials wind their way through city streets.

But as the list of stars descending upon Washington continues to grow daily, star watchers could bump into celebrities almost anywhere in Washington next week.

As one star put it, celebrities are not immune to the emotional impact that the event holds for Americans and Obama supporters around the world.

"We'll go there and just cry -- probably two, three days in a row ... Just lots of crying. We'll probably cheer a lot, too," actor Will Smith has said.

CTV Newsnet will have coverage of Obama inauguration events starting Saturday with a special Amtrak train ride, Sunday and Monday with concert and other events in Washington D.C., and culminating with all-day coverage of the Inauguration on Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. ET.

The main CTV Network will offer a live news special from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

CTV.ca will offer multiple live streams of the Obama Inauguration, starting online Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET. Viewers will be able to set their computers to a choice of video streams from Washington D.C. during the day's events, which include Obama's speech, musical performances, and a parade through the city.

Who cares. The US is running itself into bankrupcy as a country and dragging everyone else with them. US companies going bankrupt left and right and here their country is spending millions to celebrate while they should be scaling back and spend the money on their own citizens who've lost their jobs and homes.

What a joke!

The party should be held AFTER the Dems complete their elected term of office then we would see how many people show up.

Right now, it's the "fluff and bling" crowd looking to cater influence with the Prez. Tinseltown has moved to Washington.

Too much hype, it's sickening. It's like the second coming of Jesus. I don't understand why "artists" are so determined to show their faces at the inauguration?
Obama's "rise to fame" combined with his presidential campaign will be about as long as his first term in office. So if he doesn't deliver quickly, by the end of that term, people may be bored of him and move on to someone new.

It sounds as if the "stars" have claimed ownership of him (I guess with their fame and big money they will get preferential treatement at the gala). Sorry folks, he has become a President of the Stars, and not a President of the People. I just wish Oprah would stay home!

Where is the change?

What utter non sense and waste of taxpayers money.... a preview of what is to come me thinks.

The better message would have been to reign in the lavish spending on pomp and ceremony that way people would take this man seriously. Same old political rhetoric and false hope.

When Hollywood celebrates the choice for president I know it cannot be good.
It means the Administration touts the same ideology and that is a scary prospect. And now Canada is spawning choirs to worship the new president when he arrives.
I for one will not be joining the adoration.

378 of the 2000 donors gave 50,000. That equals $18.9 million. Plus the remaining 1622 donors.
Couldn't this money be put to better use in these times? A big star studded celebration. Sound like change to you?

They are not celebrating the inauguration of Obama as much as celebrating the end of the Bush league that put them in the problems they have. And that is worth celebrating!

Party on!!

Welcome President Obama, let's get to work now!
said

The only person having something positive about Bush is Bush himself. By keeping saying how well he did over the last 8 years, he might even beleave it!

He was one, if not the worst President of the USA, ( close call with Nixon).

While we will need some type of miracle to redress the mess left behing, there is no quick remedy.

Obama will have apositive impact no doubt but don't expect everything back to normal for 2009!

I wish him good luck and hope he can accomplish 1/2 of what people expect him to do.

Oh come on people!!! This is History in the making. And if some of the "African American" Stars decided to show their support, we should have an open mind and understand the importance of this moment to them. I, unlike most of you, believe that Mr Obama will make things better in the state. He has a big job to do, thanks to Mr Bush "smart Policies" and I feel kind of sorry for whomever had to pick up the pieces after M r Bush....Let's just have an open mind and enjoy the event.

A bit early to celebrate! But good luck anyway!
said

Well, I am happy to see a change of President in the USA.

Bush did nothing spectacular in fact quite the opposit!

Obama so far, all he has done is talking and giving to hope for a radical change.

This can only be positive compared to 8 years of doing nothing but fighting a war that will never be won!

All the celebrations are wasting money down the drain and does little more than putting out a goos show!

Let's get to work, stop talking and start doing than we can celebarte if the impact is positive for all of us!

This man is the President, not a movie star. The Office of the President of the United Stated is not a set of Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight; is not one of celebrity, and to make it such (as it seems to be becoming) takes away the seriousness and symbol of that office. The worst part is that it takes away the credibility of the president and their administration.

What this also shows, with all these rich Hollywood and music types, is that it takes the symbolism of "We the People" and puts it in the hands of the elite. The United States was founded by the very principal of "The People" rather than the elite, who if you read your American history, were the elite British taking orders (and liberties) from the king in order to continue the corrupt British Aristocracy.

The inauguration is about letting the people, of all walks of life, have a chance to see their new president. Instead, all this crap is taking away from that. The president is not a celebrity, he is the leader of the free world; a position that isn't to be taken lightly.

If Obama was a man of change and principal, he would stop catering to his rich Hollywood friends and make this day about the people who elected him into that great office. As for now, it seems quite the opposite. This is costing well over $100 million, whereas usually costing a fraction. In this day of economic woe, you would expect this "President of Change" to tell them to tone it down and save the tax payers money, or to put that money into something more important. Oh wait, it's about Hollywood, not him...sorry Barbara and Oprah for taking the limelight away from you.

Great show, now let's go President Obama!
said

Well he will have to do a lot more than charming the stars!

That's showbiz now it is time for concrete actions to put us back on the right path!

Only in the USA, they are the best at celebrating and putting a great show. Let see some actions now!

Hope he makes a positive difference and end that stupid war!

Alot of money is going into this...but when you compare how much was spent on the war...Mr. Obama's party is small change.

Can the US afford the money to pay for it...probobly not.
One thing is for sure...our neighbours to the south are more passionate about their country's politics...way more than we are...they always have been no matter who won.

Having a party to any extent shouldn't be surprising... especially when he is the first African-American who didn't come from a high class upbringing.

Now with all the attention on him...he should use it to his advantage...to make his country and maybe even the world a better place.

Unfortunately I don't think the average Joe can afford to attend this inaugaration. It is they who elected him and have their hopes so high, yet although he is supposed to be a President for all the people, most of the ordinary guys will not attend.

I sense a lot of bitterness and sore loser-ness on here.

Come on people, this is historical and Americans have every right to celebrate this moment.

It's been a long gruelling 8 years for many of them. I say let them enjoy a few days of celebration and coming together. After all, Bush's presidency began with the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history and ends with the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

For crying out loud let them celebrate a new begining.

If you have a problem with it, here's an idea, don't watch it.

it's very exciting. we need to celebrate. life is about more than work and war and coming together remind us of why we exist. we can always be more numbers to each other and we can matter. it is not inevitable that we fail particularly, if we change our attitudes. is it going to be perfect? no. can we do better? yes, we can.

A big hulabaloo IS justified and needed to show that a new management has come in and to show that the old way is out, and that fresh new ideas and policies will be undertaken. The world is a better place with Obama. These performers are like trumpeters showing that something very big is about to happen. I am all for it.

Bravo Obama, now action please
said

Well charming the biggest stars is something indeed but what is needed here is something even bigger!

If he does the job that is required, in a couple years from now we can then celebrate for what he has done instead of the fact that he is the first A A President!
Why is the race so important? He is the new American President period, no black and white anymore!

In 8 years Bush has accomplished little more than getting into a war with no end in site and costs billions of US$.

Obama first move should be to end this war and focus o his country! For example, to this day, New Orleans is still not back to what is was once!

No money to help youe people in nned but plenty to fight a war in a country whre you are not welcome in! Bizarre priorities, no?

Rhody
said

This inaugeration is all about hope, not hype. Hope for the future, hope for America, and hope for the world. If they want to spend some money on it, OK. Bush spent more on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in one day then this celebration will cost. Let them cheer, let them celebrate. Let them have hope, for from hope comes a positive outlook, and from that comes an increased willingness to work towards something better. And pray that Obama does realize that "hope is not a plan". Let him create and implement a good plan!

We need to grow up as people and be proud of people when they do well in life. Instead of pointing the finger, And putting them down.
Stop being, so negative towards Obama, And the United States needs your support to come together... Show some respect and not put your country Down, ever including your president elect. WE Want him to care about us as people so i think we should care about him as a person.
UNITED STATES Equals=us as people.

All what the left media could do was denounce outlandish spending for the 2005 inauguration(which will pale in comparison to this extravaganza) detailing how many homeless could be sheltered, how many people could be vaccinated yada yada yada. Now that it is the Obamamessiah they are celebrating money is no object. Hypocrites all.

I have a healthy amount of scepticism for the degree to which pop culture has merged with politics, but so so so much more than that I am encouraged by the excitement, hope and joy that is spreading throughout the country. Most of the citizens of the world will be celebrating and I will definitely be among them!

Why all these sorelosers. Sto whining people and just don't watch it. I am very happy, this is historical moment. A black man president. This is something I thought I would only see in the movies, sometimes I think maybe it is a movie and I am going to wake up. But anyways people stop crying, whining, and complaining. Stop your complaining that the country is in financial crisis and he is celebrting. Every single president have had their celebration even during the great depression. Why you people just will have a smuck on your face and be happy if you can take this time away from him, and use this nonsense to do it. Well it's not going to WORK. Celebrate President OBAMA, celebrate till you drop, you work hard for it and deserve every single bit of it. This is the last night you will be celebrating cause from there on it's work, so use this night all the way to PARTY

Canada I am an America who loves Canada and would be living there if mycircumstances were different, so please listen. DO NOT BUY INTO THE MEDIA AND THEIR DISTORTED VIEWS. What would you have done after 9/11?? I think most rational people would have done exactly what George Bush did. What choice did he have...think..these people, terroist, do not understand compromise or talk, they think it is a sign of weakness. And yes, he made mistakes because no other war was ever like this one, but he learned from his mistakes and revamped. He and Tony Blair went against a multitude of resistance to do what they did. Did they want to, I don't think so, but they had courage and history will show this, so Canada think don't be a pawn in the hands of the media.

It's totally awesome that there's a change in the US now but true they should not be spending so much money on the whole party thing. Of course the usa is the center of the universe anything goes wrong with them everyone will hear about it...and blah blah blah they are so over rated lets hope this new president does a better job then the last one. By the way I know they're are neighbours and all but do we have to hear about them more then anything else?

THIS MERELY SHOWS THAT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE COMMON MAN. HE WAS ELECTED BY HOLLYWOOD AND OTHER "STARS" OF THE U.S. AND WILL PROBABLY SERVE THEM. It is unfortunate that we led ourselved be led by the oponions of the Hollywood stars today, who certainly don't have our income, our hardships or a sampling of our lifestyles. I am not a republican conservative, nor am I a liberal democrat, but I certainly wish we would elect someone with a plan, rather than someone with glitz, a lot of talk, but no action.
