Israel killed a top Hamas official during heavy bombing in Gaza Thursday as diplomats working on both sides pushed for an end the 20-day-old conflict, which has left more than 1,100 people dead.

Said Siam, a Hamas hardliner and the former interior minister of Gaza, was killed when bombs destroyed Siam's home north of Gaza City late Thursday.

The death marks the first time during the offensive that Israel has killed a top Hamas in Gaza. Siam was "widely-feared" and was responsible for thousands of Hamas fighters, according to the BBC.

Siam's death came as Israel continued to hammer Gaza with heavy bombing, which also destroyed a UN compound that was housing hundreds of Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert apologized Thursday for shelling the UN building, calling it "very sad." However, he insisted that Israeli forces were firing back at militants who shot at them first.

"It is absolutely true that we were attacked from that place, but the consequences are very sad and we apologize for it," he said.

"I don't think it should have happened and I'm very sorry."

A senior Israeli commander, who spoke to The Associated Press under condition of anonymity prior to Olmert's public remarks, said militants had fired anti-tank weapons and machine guns from inside the UN compound on Thursday.

Israel's apparent counter-attack set the compound on fire, destroyed food supplies and forced hundreds of refugees to flee the area.

UN officials said it was "nonsense" that militants had been firing from inside the compound.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is meeting with Israeli officials in Israel Thursday, has demanded an investigation into the incident.

"I conveyed my strong protest and outrage to the defense minister and foreign minister and demanded a full explanation," Ban said.

Earlier Thursday, the UN chief said that Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak told him the attack on the UN compound was a "grave mistake."

Barak also reportedly said Israel would pay extra attention to protecting UN facilities.

The UN Works and Relief Agency compound was providing shelter for 700 people fleeing the Israeli assault, spokesperson Francesc Claret told CTV Newsnet in a phone interview from Jerusalem. All the people were evacuated to a nearby school.

Claret called the incident a "major setback" in the agency's ability to deliver aid, and harshly criticized Israel for the attack, in light of the Israeli government's guarantee to not target aid installations.

"Gaza is the only conflict in the world that I know right now where the civilian population is denied the right to flee the combat," said Claret. "There is nowhere safe in Gaza, even within the UN compound."

Still, he said the agency will continue to provide shelter and health services in Gaza.

Claret said the UN compounds are clearly marked and that Israeli authorities even have the GPS (global position system) co-ordinates of the compound.

"They know where each of our installations are in Gaza," he said.

UN spokesman Chris Gunness says at least three people were wounded.

Meanwhile, Israeli ground troops have moved deep into Gaza City, engaging in close-combat fighting with Hamas.

"People are very, very nervous, there is very heavy fighting," CTV's Tom Kennedy reported Thursday from Jerusalem.

Also on Thursday, Israeli shells struck a hospital, five high-rise apartment buildings and a building used by media outlets.

Several reporters were reported injured.

The Foreign Press Association demanded that Israel stop its attacks on buildings housing reporters.

Since the Israeli offensive began on Dec. 27, about 1,100 Palestinians have been killed, including about 550 civilians.

Thirteen Israelis have also died. Israeli military reported 14 firings of rockets into Israel on Thursday.

Truce negotiation

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said his country has sent an envoy to Cairo for truce talks with Egyptian mediators.

Regev says envoy Amos Gilad will be negotiating the "parameters of the end game" with the mediators.

"The Israeli government is saying that diplomatic efforts pushing towards a ceasefire now have momentum," Kennedy said.

Israel, which launched the offensive against Hamas in Gaza on Dec. 27, wants a total stoppage of Palestinian rocket fire into southern Israeli towns.

Regev said Gilad will not be meeting with Hamas envoys in Egypt.

Egypt is pushing both Israel and Hamas to accept a 10-day truce to allow time for a more comprehensive accord to be negotiated.

Israel has also dispatched a senior diplomat to Washington to discuss international guarantees that Hamas will not rearm its militia, reports The Associated Press.

In Israel, Ban met with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Thursday.

"We have some elements now in place which may allow a cease fire to come fairly soon," he told a news conference. "I hope so, but that depends on the political will of the Israeli government."

He said a complete truce agreement was not necessary to halt the fighting.

"You can discuss terms and conditions later, my demand is to cease firing immediately," he said.

"I'm well aware that rockets have been fired at Israeli civilians for years from Gaza," he said. "I have always condemned these as acts of terrorism and said they must cease."

Unfortunately this type of action has been done before and unfortunately it has been followed up by the usual apology. Unfortunately an apology is always after the fact. It's unfortunate that this security measure is happening at all. Unfortunately the UN is an organization with little bite so unfortunately expressing "outrage" is about all that can be done. It's all just unfortunate.

The UN just used it's big card...expressing 'strong protest and outrage'. This means nothing to either side of this conflict.

The UN is a useless organization that is corrupt and obsolete. If you ask me, the UN should be dissolved and or run right out of town.

They can condemn whoever they want, but whenever Israel has ever tried to defend herself, the UN was always right there to condemn her.

Well, this is certainly regrettable.

However, Hamas fighters routinely use UN buildings and ambulances as shelter and transport, knowing that Israeli Defense Forces will hesitate to attack.

If the UN is crying about a shelling, then why are they staying in the middle of a war zone? Where was the UN when Hamas was firing unguided rockets in Israel? They didnt seem to mind that did they? Being on the strip, the UN should of been a first hand witness to this, but once again the UN did nothing.

Right on George, but unfortunately the UN is obligated to protect anyone who holes up in that compound. More than likely there are militants hiding among any civilians which is why the Israilis have shelled it. This is just the beginning of another Crusades.

A big army like Israel should be able to avoid hitting UN offices.

Israel did something similar during attacks on Lebanon, hitting a UN post, and a Canadian UN observer and 3 others died in that "accident"

The UN is there to watch this war... the UN created this mess in Middle East, it better be there to see the end.

What should the Un do then, eh? Bomb Isreal, perhaps? What do people want, more violence to protest violence?
Of course the UN can only protest with outrage on this attack.
Either you are against the use of violence as a means of resolving conflict or you are for it. Unfortunately all the later does is continue the cycle of tit for tat violence.
Ghandi had it so very right, we must end the cycle by standing firm and resisting the urge to use violence to acheive our agendas. That is, of course, unless it is used directly in self defense. Isreal is not really defending herself here. She is seeking revenge and fanning the flames of hatred which will only result in more retaliation.

Words, empty words. That's the best the UN can offer?

If the UN and be extension the int'l community is serious about a cease fire, they will deploy int'l troops (from European nations) into Gaza to ensure there are no more Hamas rockets or Isreali incursions.

Unless we as a global community are willing to devote actual resources to stop the fighting, then I say Isreal has every right to level Gaza if that's what it takes to stop Hamas and ensure Isreali security.

Israel attacked to this compound WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT it was meant to cause more suffering to the civilian population. Israel knows exactly where the UN offices and warehouses are located. The destruction of the warehouse with all the food, medical supplies and combustible is just another exemplo of the brutality of the Israeli government.
The UN is there in a humanitarian mission - to help Palestinian to survive the Israeli carnage.

It takes 2 to tango as they say - both sides are equally at fault here. He said / She said... blah blah blah - same old same old - I am tired of it all.

Anyways this is a US and UK created problem - if they had not 'stuck their fingers in' where they did not belong and 'appropriated' the land for Israel back in the '40's this would be moot subject right now.

Wonder what the US (I don't see the UK having any stomach for doing anything) will do to 'stick their finger' into it now. If this where not such a tragic situation I would find it all very entertaining - unfortunately the few who are the trouble makers cause grief for all those that are the most vulnerable and innocent in a society - regular people - men, women, young and old, children, babies, not to mention livestock and livelyhoods - all distroyed.

I don't see this conflict resolving anytime fast - in-fact I have a very bad feeling about this - I think this is only the start of HUGE political issue that has been brewing in the Middle East since 9/11 and the 'war on Iraq'. It would not surprise me if this were the beginnings of a World Wide conflict... Now that scares me.

Come on people get along - it is not really that hard - if you are all adult enough to want to that is. Sheesh.

my 2 cents.
said

Given what I've seen so far, the UN is as much a problem in Gaza as Hamas. Its probably a legitimate target.

The middle east has always been a war zone, and will always be a war zone until every person in the region truly wants peace, and is willing to give up some of their land or freedom to get it.

The religious issues are also a huge factor. When people are of the belief that God has told them to massacre an entire race of people who happen to live in the same region, peace will not be achieved until their belief system is shaken, or one group is wiped out.

Since the military might of Israel is backed by the US, it is unlikely that they will be wiped out any time soon. Since the belief system that demands that they be killed has existed for thousands of years, I doubt it is going to change anytime soon. The world would be far better off pulling out of the middle east and letting them sort out their own problems.

Sorry, but I don't see why this is such an outrage. They are at war and mistakes happen. Go back and read some of the headlines over the past seven years that the US (and, yes, Canada) has spent "accidentally" killing innocent civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I am not sure where some of these people get the idea that war is waged with such surgical precision that the innocent don't die. It is regrettable and it is a tragedy, but until humans can find some way of co-existing in peace it will continue to happen as long as we are at war with one another. That is no condemnation of our military, by the way - it is simply a fact.

Look, I'm no expert or anything, but when a country tells the people that live in a certain area to get out or else they risk getting killed, then I will get out of that area.

It really isn't that hard to understand. Simple: stay - high chance of death; leave - low chance of death...unless some crazy nut-job decides to blow themselves up outside a peaceful cafe.

The UN thinks that both sides actually care about them; they don't, sorry. UN, you are no help, so keep out...it isn't your problem!

In a way, the UN is like that geeky kid who is watching a school yard brawl and trying to stop it. You can't, you have to let the brawl stop on it's own and the winner is the last one standing.

School yard rules...similar to the rules of war: there are no rules. If WWII was fought today with these politically correct "war rules", we'd either still be fighting it, or the Nazi would have taken over Europe and possibly N. America.

Slight digression:

Why does CTV refer to Ban Ki-Moon as "Ban" instead of his last name, Ki-Moon?

Normally, last names are repeated throughout news articles. A story about Tony Blair, for example, wouldn't have "Tony" repeated throughout the article. It would say "Blair." So why is this not the case for Ban Ki-Moon?

Ry in Hamilton
said

Um... There seems to be a complete ignorance from readers of this post as to what the ultimate benefits are of having the UN.

Aside from its international role in health, social, education and defence foras, it's also an international agency that prevents world war amongst larger nations and works to address issues with smaller nations with the support and convictions of developed countries. Without that, we'd constantly be fighting with eachother. You need an agency that can pull all the players together in a diplomatic forum to do these things.

It's not as easy as you think, and its more complicated than the superficial "it's useless". Politics is not an upfront business, many good things are done behind the scenes, while diplomats and politicians stand up and take the credit for it.

Ban wants an explanation? How about simply putting 2+2 together and taking a second look at the one the UN gave us yesterday, acknowledging they had Hamas and other extremeists on the payroll. If they are on the payroll, odds are pretty good they were hiding and firing from that very "UN" compound.

Westerneres will NEVER accept the extremists tactics of hiding among their own population for protection. Even the viet cong wore a uniform and didn't trick western forces into firing on their own people.

As someone who actually works for the UN, I am incensed at the vitriol being spewed by my fellow Canadians on this organisation. First of all, the UN is nothing but the sum of its parts i.e. Member States. If there is no will among them to act, they will not do so whether within or outside the UN. They will then turn around and blame the UN. Sort of like people blaming everything on 'society'. Second of all, dealing with threats to internal peace and security is a very small part of what the UN actually does which includes: food aid, vaccinations, building school, fostering the rule of law in transitional countries, leading groundbreaking medical research, assisting refugees, etc. Take a moment, do us all a favour and get informed before talking nonsense because if the UN didn’t exist, we would have to invent it!

It is a well-known fact that Hamas (and other terrorist groups) use UN vehicles, buildings and other UN-sponsored facilities to hide weapons and fighters (hello people they are terrorists they don't fight by rules). While it is unfortunate I would feel more outrage if the UN had forced terrorists out before, or if the various UN agencies (their Human Rights commissions for example) were not so biased against Israel. PJR, the UN is good at so little and what little good they do comes at far to high a price. The price both dollar wise and the price of their twisted view of democracy, where tin pot dictatorships and religios, fundamentalist states who won't let their own people vote, get a vote just as powerful as modern and massive free nations do. Canada's foriegn policy should never be ceded to that discredited organization. NGO's can deliver aid every bit as well as the UN. The U.N. took this land (with the blessings of all member nations) from the Palestinian/Arab people after world war 2. Since that time there have been innumerable uprisings by these people to regain this territory, never a successful endeavour for any length of time. This area has been fought over by the Jewish, Christian and Muslim people for well over a thousand years and will never be resolved, peacefully or otherwise. No matter who is "outraged or appalled" by what is going on it will not end any time soon. All we can hope for is brief bouts of peace from time to time.....let's hope for one now.

Another typical Hamas tactic. Lob missles at Israel, then barricade yourself behing innocent women & children, or in a hospital, or in a UN compound, etc etc. And then turn the blame on Israel for "killing innocent victims" when they retaliate. Hamas is a brutal regime who can put on spin on a story like no one else. So what about those who have been killed and wounded by Hamas's missle attacks? And where is the western press when that happens?

"Ban" is, in fact, his "last" (or family) name. In Korea (and some other cultures) family names are used first, and given names second. Thus, if reporters referred to him as Ki-Moon, it would be akin to referring to our politicians as Steve, George, Barack, etc...

Regardless of any socio-politico-military distraction, the entire world is aware of Israel's distinct position as the land of the Bible, and its associated complications. The situation there at the moment is abnormal and intractable. It doesn't appear it will ever be solved outside of a biblical solution. The animosity runs through their veins, and is carried down the generations. This sad, terrible conflict didn't begin after WWII, a view so many authors and revisionist historians try to spread. It's an old, old story.
Whatever anyone may think of the Bible, it does say in there that at its apogee, when there appears to be no hope, the trouble in Israel, especially Jerusalem, will be halted due to a 7 year peace deal brokered by Europeans. Whatever we may think, isn't it interesting this was written thousands of years ago? Maybe we should be paying more attention.

To answer Mike514's question, in Asian cultures it is customary to put one's family name before their given name. So Ban is his last name, Ki-Moon is his first.

Israel has refused to allow UN Peacekeepers into the region for fear they'd lose any leverage with the United States. Peacekeepers by the thousands would keep the peace. I want one thing. Does anybody have any understanding why Israel is refusing to flood the region with peacekeepers? I mean, the problem with the middle east is continuous Israeli incursions into the Palestinian territories - knowing full well it's causing instability throughout the region. With an international peacekeeping force, the situation would be well controlled. Besides some very lame and unsupported reasons to this aversion that sounds too convenient for the Israelis, what is the real reason?

Again, the only logical conclusion is they'd lack any pull. Even the USA has refused this option & even precluded other nations & world leaders into carving out a settlement - we'll remember Tony Blair wanted to go in and settle & the reaction was swift from the USA & Israel....basically for him to stay out of it.

Israel is a fundamentalist religious state, research Zionism, the only people who receive equality in the eyes of Israel are Jews, by definition that disqualifies it as a democracy. Anyone who writes in that Arab-Israelis are treated as equals, let me stop you right now because that's a blatant fabrication, they're treated as third class citizens whose rights are irrelevant and whose property is still regularly confiscated and given to European & American Jews.

If the Hamas fighters were engaging in terrorist / military operations using a UN compound as a base, then the Israelis striking that same base is totally valid. Just as valid as if they were being shot at from any other buildings.

Allowing the compound to be used by fighters is just another example of the UN's failure to control anything on any level...

What a failure of an organization. After 60+ years of corruption and totally pathetic performance from the UN, don't look for it to get any better.

To call this catastrophe a 'war' is to mangle the definition of the word, in the same way, George Bush does, in describing his 'war' on terror.

What we have in Gaza is a full scale, ultra-modern army and air force, attacking some crazed men with firecrackers.

Over 700 dead Palestinians and perhaps 20 Israelis sums up the situation.

Of course Hamas is wrong, but the Israelis are far worse. This is not about a few rockets, that do very little damage. This is a continuing conflict from the 1940's and even earlier.

For those attacking the UN, remember Canada was a leader in peacekeeping. It is only Harper and the Cons who have taken us out of that important role. If the UN is dying, Canada's policies are part of the problem.

We definitely are not part of any solutions, with our present international actions.

Actually the UN IS Hamas in Gaza. They are controlled by Hamas. The UNRWA employs many Hamas members who run schools (read madrasses). The corruption is astounding. Israel knows this that's why they don't care if they hit a UN compound. Its no different than hitting a Hamas compound.

I think that if the UN allows these people to take refuge and then to bomb Israel, then the UN is at fault for this incident.

It is even more disturbing that Palestinians and Gazans think that just because they are in a shelter they can do as they want and cry wolf when the tables get turned.

The UN has once again proven its uselessness and the need for countries to withdraw from its membership.

Canada has recognized Hamas as a terrorist organization for many years now so to me, this is another war on terror. Sometimes, you get collateral damage in these things!

Wow! DLN are you ever out there. You are defending yourself if you take up arms and attack those who are actively attacking you. It would be self defense if you were attacking the person in front of you that is shooting at you or the base from which these attacks are coming from. It would not be by firing 3000+ rockets into a civilian population.

There seems to be a pattern developing here where, Isreal are accused of fireing on civilians or Un facilities. then the Isrealies say that Hamas fired from there first. A news report this morning stated that Hamas fighters were firing on Isrealy forces from apartment where civilians were hiding. It seems to be that Hamas are using the civilians of Gaza as human sheilds to try and boasts it propaganda war.

Probably one or a few individual Israeli soldiers were angry at the UN (everyone who loves Israel is angry at the UN, it's like a reflex) decided to "accidentally" bomb the UN compound just for the heck of it. They probably have some individual discretion about targets minute-to-minute, you can't run a war zone completely as a bureaucracy. No one would ever be able to prove it wasn't an accident. Then Israel has to do a diplomatic dance to try and explain it. In this case they decided to justify it instead of dismissing it as an accident.

Why is the UN getting so worked up over the fact that their compound was shelled by the Israeli Army? Last time I checked, the UN was created to keep world peace. Hamas threatens that piece by promoting the destruction of Israel. We already know that we can't trust Hamas, so why are they railing at Israel? They are simply defending their country from a terrorist network built around the principles of Israel's destruction.

No negotiations until Hamas capitulates.

Also, Israeli Intelligence is the best in the world. Mark it down, if they say it originated in the UN Compound, then that's where it originated.

Here's how I see it: Hamas fires rockets indiscriminantly at Isreal-thousands of them, for a long time. Israel wants them to stop. Hamas won't stop but routinely plays the media (witness the fake CPR to the 'dying' child naively reported by CNN AND the routine use of human shields, Mosques as bases for rockets etc) within its continued attempts to fight with Israel. Israel has had enough and wants to protect it's people. Israel uses laser-guided bombs, highly accurate artillery and goes to exceptional detail to avoid civilian casualties. Some civilians are regrettabley injured or killed however by Israeli action and Israel is lambasted in the media for doing so.

Let us remember however....for YEARS Hamas routinely launches unguided missiles/rockets at Israel with the express purpose of inflicting civilian causalties. But it is Israel who is blamed for civilian deaths.

Israel tries to avoid civilian deaths, Hamas specifically targets civilians yet Israel is the one chastized??

Does no one see the incredible double standard here??

Ban IS his family name. In Korean, like in Chinese or Japanese, the family name is given before the first name. Check out Ban Ki-Moon on Wikipedia. Now the question would be, why did they not reverse the name order as they usually do in translations? Although, personally, I prefer keeping the original order for Asian names.

As for the news, well, I agree with the comments that say : violence only breeds more violence. But what can people who are against violence do to stop the ones who are for it? Unfortunately, I don't have enough imagination to come up with a solution. Enough said!

Come on people, by now it must be crystal clear to you all that until every last drop of blood has been spilled, there will be no end to the conflict.

I just pray that the US and Canada do not get involved. Let them go at it until its done, and then MAYBE there will be peace in the Middle East once and for all!

Palestine, Gaza, and the West Bank are not a country.

Their funding and all financial transactions are agreed-to and maintained by Israel.

Their territorial delimitations were determined by Israel. Based on a policy of division with its 'Regional' council in one 'province' with the majority of its people in another.

Until the UN formally recognizes the state of Palestine and establishes that it has the right to govern over its sovereignty and its suzerainety, Israel can do whatever it likes.

This is not a war, it is a state of repression. Israel is no better than the Pinochets, the Noriegas or the Saddams.

I still remember the Lebanon conflict with Israel saying that a Hezbollah leader was hiding in an ambulance, so they blew it up. The remains that were found were that of a child, its mother, a nurse and the ambulance driver.

What about the father clutching his son behind a box while Israeli snipers shot them both dead ? And then got medals for it. All because teenagers were throwing rocks at tanks and armoured jeeps.

I lost respect for Israel a long time ago.

I doubt very much that there is really any truth to the Israeli side. If you've ever read the "Puzzle Palace" (by James Bamford) they did the same thing to a "US Sigint"(Signal Intelligence) ship off the coast of Israel during the 6 day war in the 60's and there was no way it could have been mistaken for an Egyptian Naval Vessel especially since they had overflown it several times in the days before they actually made the attack. Not to mention that it was in international waters at the time. They then did the same thing "OoPs we made a mistake and we are sorry". The first thing out the window in war is the truth.

It is absolutely unacceptable that civilians are been killed in Gaza, not even one should be acceptable.

What is also unacceptable is Hamas firing rockets into Israel, Hamas hiding among the civilians, Hamas hiding in the UN building, Hamas shooting to kill from the UN building, Hamas shooting to kill from amongst civilians.

What to do? What to do?

A ceasefire will only allow time for Hamas to reload. What is needed is a permanent truce, which includes a final solution to the 2 state concept, using today's borders as a starting point. There can be no going back to the 1967 borders.

Obama, peace in our time.

Most countries are anti-west, strongly against Israel and countries like China, Russia and Islamic middle east nations and Islam in Africa - nobody cares. They all condem western nations. The day will come when Canada and United States will be prisoners of the United Nations.

I don't know why the international community is speaking from both sides of their mouth on the raging Israel/Palestinian war, tagged "Operation Cast Lead". Everybody overheard the Hamas say and even boasted that they will not renew the 6months cease-fire it entered into with Israel as it was nearing expiration in December, 08. This is also an Organisation that has ceaselessly fired rockets into Israel without an iota of consideration as to who will be hit (whether civilian or military target, they don't care)and is using its own people as canonfoders.
There is a time in any human endeavour when "diplomacy" and "politics"(if that is what the world community is doing) should be taking away from an issue for truth to prevail.
In ordinary reasoning, Israel cannot be called to stop the current campaign or be acussed of causing any humanitarian disaster in Gaza on a war the Hamas provoked and on which they have refused to stop sending missiles into their opponents territory. The real people prolonging the suffering in the Palestinian territories are the Palestinians themselves who voted Hamas into office on one hand and their sponsors in Iran, Syria and other terrorist groups to which Hamas is allied on the other hand.

Pretty sad when people make comments on here justifying the killing of civilians just to get some terrorists.
Israel certainly has a right to defend itself - but when does that right end? When you fight stone throwing with nuclear warheads? This is just not right. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization - and rightfully so, but that doesn't preclude giving Israel the right to fight terror with terror.

Mike514,

Korean convention is Family name followed by the given name.

As far as a UN compound being attacked, I think the response is FULLY justified if the attack originated from that location.

Unfortunately finding good evidence in a war zone is difficult, so people will just choose to believe whichever side they want.

Just some facts that most people don't seem to know about the Gaza situation: The population of the Gaza Strip is only slightly larger than that of Calgary with a population of 1.5 million people. More people were murdered in Calgary last year than were killed by Gazan rockets in Israel. You certainly don't see the Canadian military launching an all-out offensive on this city to make up for what the police can't control. Can you imagine 1,100 Calgarians being wiped out in order to curb gang violence? Slightly disproportional don't you think? Another fact, the GDP of an average Gazan is $1,100, compared to $26,600 of an average Israeli. 26 times. These people have been oppressed for years and now live in a Nazi-style ghetto. Quite frankly, if I were oppressed in this fashion, I would also be taking any steps necessary to fight it. Wake up Canada.

Yes it is the truth.
How can a single opinion here have any value IF that opinion is based entirely upon the information divulged from a single television source.
Yes, we like to think and believe that we are being given the whole picture, that we can trust implicitly the source, but sometimes that source has too close of ties to either the government or to Israel, or both if the truth is known. Remember that our government was the only one to stand in the UN and oppose the resolution against Israel.
Even our neighbours to the south are privy to certain information that we are not. My highest reccomendation goes to the BBC so far for background.. a history of maps.. leading up to this war, and for the most unbiased reporting.
My posts on this topic for the last couple of weeks have been trashed and or edited. What you see here is a carefully filtered sample of what the media believes is going to be acceptable to all of the powers that be, a source of frustration to the rest of us who have a conscience.
It would be refreshing to have every word of this posted though I don't hold my breath.. but oh well, if it's not, I'm sure the rest of world wants to hear what's going on in Canada.. damn that pesky internet.

Due to the continued refusal of the Israeli government to recognize a United Nations mandate for an immediate ceasfire and withdrawal my family and I will be boycotting all Israeli goods and services. Due to the continuing support and funding of Israel by the United States we will also be boycotting all American goods and services. We are also asking people around the world to make themselves familiar with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms at the United Nations. They are sorry for shelling a UN compound? Right. Not sure about anyone else, but I assume that sorry implies that they will try not to repeat the offensive act... but shelling of UN compounds is a bit of a habit for Israel. During the recent 'war' with Lebanon Israel shelled a UN Observation Post (OP KIEM) for hours, with the same rational, and killed 4 peacekeepers, including Canada's Maj Hess Von Krudener (sp?). The Israelis clearly have no respect for the United Nations or the international community. We should remember these incidents when we are jumping to defend Israel.

1000 dead v. a few injuries does not a war make.

It is a war zone. If you move around you are a target. That is war, kill the enemy before he can kill you. If you go into a war zone then expect to be shot at no matter who you are. I don't support either side but I will say that this is there war and we should butt out. War is ugly, civilians die. We can make all the rules we want, condemn both sides and try to get them to minimise collateral damage as much as possible but when push comes to shove, self preservation kicks in and anyone in your way becomes a target.

Actually, the world shelled the UN compound. By lining up lockstep behind Israel in its slaughter of innocent civilians (children) because of some rockets set off by a radical group (not aimed at or killing anyone), the international community, led by the US, has just bombed the UN. Are there any adults out there in a position of power 'cuz we could use some reasonable action here.

Just waiting for Mr. Harper's "measured response" to this one...

Sadly, Canada pulled out of the "Durban 2" Human Rights conference to be held in Geneva this year so no worries about not condemning human rights violations. Only two other countries "opted out": the US and Israel.

Sad to see that once a world leader in addressing peace and pushing others hard to come to terms, this country just zipped its lip and is afraid of fiercely protecting the one organization that it once made famous... Prime Minister Pearson must be rolling in his grave just about now.

This whole situation is sad. Just imagine if Hamas had taken the money from Iran and elsewhere, instead of buying weapons, use the money to build a society for the folks in Gaza. Many Israel defenders posting here forget the fact that there has been a brutal 40-year occupation of the Palestinian people by Israel. Throughout it, there have been nearly half a million colonizers placed on occupied Palestinian Land; tens of thousands of Palestinians detained a la Gitmo, and tortured (documented evidence by Human Rights Watch, Bt'Selem, Amnesty), targeted assassinations, hundreds of checkpoints, the Apartheid wal, just to name a few.

Context is important. Hamas rockets are deplorable, but you have to ask yourself - what brought them to this point? And know, hatred borne of religion is not it. That is an ignorant, oversimplification of a tiny aspect that is being exploited to explain the conflict.

This is not a 1000-year old conflict. In fact, Arabs and Jews lived quite well together in the holy land back then...

It's a shame this happened, however to be fair, things happen in war. It doesn't excuse it but it's truth.
On another note. I would not be at all surprised if there were in fact missles being shot from inside the UN compound seeing as how the UN as almost unilaterally taken sides against Israel on practically everything.
To take the The Palestinian "witnesses" word for everything that happened is poor reporting in my opinion. Palestinian view on truth and history is highly suspect at times but who knows.

This is a war.... not a garden picnic. To me, there is no such thing as a fair fight... that is an oxymoron. If my neighbour starts firing dung into my yard, you can be sure that I am going to fire more than dung back at him. If I am in a physical fight for my life, do you think that there are rules I must follow to fight fair? I am fighting for my life.... I will do whatever it takes to overpower my enemy. And if someone supports my neighbour in their assult on me either agressively or passively, guess what, he is now also my enemy. We can never win a war if we fight by "rules" while the other side ignores any such crap. That's why we will never win against terrorists who do not respect the life of their own let alone us.

As a Canadian who has spent two decades living and working in private business internationally it is embarrassing to see the uninformed and sometimes even boorish level of so many comments on this story. The U.N. may have many faults but it is the best we can do as a group of Nations with diverse agendas. The good brought to the world through the U.N. far outweighs the cumulative value of many dozens of NGO in similar relief provision. It is not the business of the U.N. to market itself and what seemingly self-promotional work one sees in media is often placed as part of a member Countries contribution to the U.N. In many parts of the world the U.N. deals with situations where vested interests are in control of Countries. Countries which are often member states of the U.N. and under its Charter which was mostly installed by the victor States of World War II there are limits on what action can be taken.

IMO - In the terrible situation in Gaza both groups are comprised of vested interests. The Israeli government is made up of multiple Parties who have negotiated a Government pact with so many subtle deals and favors owing what it would likely be very difficult to define a responsible Government agenda or philosophy in the whole mess. The people of Israel did not vote this Government into power it is a negotiated ‘Government’ and, has been with only minor differences, for decades.

Hamas is a terror group and likely little better then street thugs who offer protection relief to the people of Gaza but have failed to deliver. I feel sad for the average citizen of both Israel and Gaza because their leaders have made a career out of battling each other and there appears to be no end. And, vested interests of member States on the U.N. Security Council will make sure that the U.N. never has the authority or the force to intervene effectively in the Middle East situation. Arms sales, graft, corruption, oil, power, are the key words in this mess and it all comes down to vested interests pulling the strings. Religion, aid, democracy, human rights are all buzz words to cover up the BS.
