Outgoing U.S. President George Bush says the biggest challenge facing his successor, president-elect Barack Obama, is the threat from an enemy that "would like to inflict damage" on Americans.

On Monday, during his final news conference as president, Bush addressed questions on a wide range of topics, from the conflict in Gaza to why so many people seem to dislike him, to mistakes he may have made during his tenure.

Bush said Obama's main priority upon taking office next week, should be the fact there are enemies out there that "would like to inflict damage" on Americans.

He also said he still considered Iran and North Korea -- once considered members of his so-called "Axis of Evil" along with Iraq -- to be dangerous.

During the often-nostalgic news conference Bush looked back on the arc of his presidency, and was even willing to admit to some mistakes, or regrets, along the way.

"Clearly, putting 'mission accomplished' on an aircraft carrier was a mistake," Bush said, referring to a May 1, 2003 televised address from the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Bush, appearing on an aircraft carrier decorated with the slogan, announced that the end of major combat operations in Iraq had arrived.

However, violence only increased after the announcement and many looked at the moment as an indication of Bush's unrealistic perspective on the war.

Bush said he had also spent a lot of time looking back on his handling of Hurricane Katrina, and wondering whether he should have landed Air Force One in the region, to get a first-hand look at the damage in New Orleans.

He has faced major criticism for his response to the catastrophe, and perceived failure to act on reports that such a disaster was imminent.

However, Bush said he has reached the conclusion that had he landed in Baton Rouge or New Orleans, his critics would have said his presence took police and security away from their important work helping evacuate people from New Orleans.

He also said the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was a major disappointment.

"One thing about the presidency is you can only make decisions on the information at hand," Bush said. "You don't get to have information after you've made the decision, that's not the way it works, and you stand by your decisions and you do your best to explain why you made the decisions you made."

Mideast policy

Bush repeated his call for the creation of a separate Palestinian state as the solution to the longstanding conflict in Israel.

Bush also said Hamas must stop its attacks on Israel, noting that a "sustainable" ceasefire will only happen if Hamas stops firing missiles across the border.

He repeated another position he has maintained steadily, saying he believes Israel has the right to defend itself -- but said both sides must do everything they can to avoid civilian deaths.

America's moral standing

When asked whether America's moral standing in the world had been damaged by his presidency, Bush strongly disagreed.

In his travels around the world, he said, the vast majority of people he has met still look to the U.S. as a beacon of freedom in the world.

"I disagree with this assessment that people view America in a dim light. I just don't agree with that," Bush said.

He acknowledged that the creation of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre and his refusal to join the Kyoto climate change accord have angered some, said but Africa, India, China, and much of Europe still look favourable on the U.S.

"I strongly disagree with the assessment our moral standing has been damaged," Bush said. "It may have been damaged somewhat among some of the elite, but people still understand that America stands for freedom."

Bush also dismissed the suggestion that his own personal popularity has suffered.

"Most people I see when I'm moving around the country -they're not angry and they're not hostile people. Well, you say you never meet people who disagree with you -- well that's not true. I meet a lot of people who don't agree with the decisions I make, but they have been civil in their discourse.

"I view those who get angry and hostile and yell and say bad things as just a very few people in the country."

Abraham Lincoln also faced harsh criticism, Bush said.

Fare the well, Mr. President. In a few years time, I believe that people will look back upon your presidency and wish that you were still the president.

It amazes me still, this man made what were the correct decisions, though wildly unpopular (at times). In the end, I believe that his record is sound and that history will be kinder to President Bush than the present has been.

Hogwash: George Bush Junior was getting even with Saddam for his father. That was his sole reason for invading Iraq. He thought it would be a quick victory and that the oppressed people would rise up and help. He didn't know how the Arab mind works.

The regimn may have opressed the people, but they posed no threat to the USA. If he had stuck with just Afghanistan they might have rousted the Taliban there completely and a lot of lives would have been spared.

If the Americans would stop trying to be the world police and stop trying to convert everyone to their way of life, there wouldn't be so many lined up to inflict damage upon them. Bush is the worst president ever and is a laughing stock among world leaders. It is unfortunate that someone so ignorant wields the most power in the world. Until Bush, Canada had a pretty decent relationship with the US but since he calls everyone else his best friends, why should we try to be anything but a trading partner at arms length? I have nothing against the American people as a whole, but we can do without war mongers for the sake of an oil supply.

History will view George Bush quite differently than the media elites have over these past 8 years. And that change of view will start once people perceive that Obama is not some kind of god-like miracle worker. There has not been another terrorist attack on America since 9-11. Think that was dumb luck? Not.

America should just get over it, they like to intensify things 10,000 times more than what it is. They want to make themselves more important than anyone on this planet which no one really cares across the globe aaside from themselves. All this just to justify military spending while criticizing other countries.

America is running dry financially and it's responsibilities are also drying up due to lack good judgements and poor management in the economy.

Mr. Bush had a great run considering the challenges he faced. He did so while mainiting his professionalism, dignity and principles, something few occupants of the Whitehouse could claim.

Then again how many presidents had to face something like 9-11, a two theatre war, an economy that was collpased by unprincipled profittering and an SEC that was powerless to police it?

Bush's detractors were usually despotic regimes abroad and people both here and abroad who were detached from the post 9-11 security realities. This is especially evident with those who are living in denial of Islamist Fundamentalism.

Domestically Mr. Bush's detractors vigorously opposed his tax cuts yet wanted him to fund every last social program to the max. If he'd had listened to those folks the market meldown would have met us 2-3 earlier than it did.

History will show that George W. Bush was a great presient amidst challenging times and that while he didn't opt to be Mr. Popular, he was Mr. Right in the correct sense of the word.

Godspeed Mr. President.

I still did not get any real answers to the question of Sadam’s weapon used to slathers many Kurdish and Iranian’s people. There were chemical weapons, where did they vanished? In thin air?

Mr. Bush, it was not necessary to invade Iraq, as others here have said Afghanistan was the bed of those who where trained to fly and crash those airplanes killing so many innocents people from many countries in September 11 2001.

War is the worst options in any situation, rush your judgment is the worst policy, patience and diplomacy is the only way to have peace in the world. Confrontation is the worst avenue for everyone in the world.

To those who believe that President Bush is the reason why there hasn't been another attack on the USA should consider this: the Canadian/American border have "honour system crossing" - there are no guards. Second, the Mexico/USA border is seriously compromised - hundreds of thousands of Mexicans and who knows who - cross the border every year. The terrorists didn't attack because they are maticulous about when, where & how to attack. The lack of attack should not give anybody the illusion that all is safe. I can travel to "0 Avenue" today in Surrey & simply cross the street & I'm in the USA. The only way you'd know you've crossed over is that the ditch is the marker. You'd mostly know when you are a local to the area. That's the route all human & drug trafficers take.

George W. is worried about "the threat from an enemy that would like to inflict damage on Americans" when it is his own delusional, misguided, Made-in-USA financial oversight that has wrought more havoc on Americans (and the entire Western world) than Al-Qaeda could ever dream of doing. On January 20th, Americans should hoist a follow up "Mission Accomplished" banner in their hometowns as they launch his butt out the door.

I wish the new administration all the best in trying to undo all his mistakes of the past 8 years.

This is a man who went light years beyond his capabilities because he was born into the right family.

The debt he has wracked up has done more damage to the long term prospects of the U.S. as superpower than any foreign enemy could ever hope.

He has to paint a rosy picture, he is a relatively young man who will have to listen to derision for the rest of his life. Luckily he has the ability to delude himself.

I think his biggest legacy is how his Presidency (very unintentionally) exposed the blatant dishonesty and bias of the mainstream media today. I did not agree with many of the things he did. But what's worse is that the media during these last 8 years made the unforgiveable transition from reporting the 'facts' to instead disseminating opinion, partisanship, and rhetoric - and calling it 'fact.'

It will be interesting to see how the average person views the Bush years in 10-15 years time. You can be rest assured that the "Ministries of Truth" will be doing all they can to make their predictions about Bush stand the test of time.

The biggest threat that President Obama will face is the national debt -- the damage that it is doing to America is far greater than any attack from an outside entity. In July 2000 the National Debt Clock was turned off because the national debt was being paid down. In a mere 8 years GWB has more than doubled the debt. And in his fare-thee-well interview, he had the audacity to state that he inherited these problems. As for 9/11 if he had been doing his job (no I'm not talking about clearing brush in Crawford or playing golf) he would have heeded warnings of an imminent attack. Bush is America's worst president and history will not be kind to him.

Bollocks KW. Bush won 2004 with social conservatives and evangelicals. Kerry pretty much lost 2004 on flip flops and the fact that like other Democrats especially those from the north east he was way too liberal and had no chance in red state America which is the majority of the country. He was too rich, too elitist, too Massechusetts. The DNC corrected this in advance of 2008 which allowed B. Hussein Obama an even less appealing candidate to do so much better.

From my observance Bush was great in assembling his teams which included Condi Rice, Colin Powell, John Ashcroft, Bob Gates, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Andy Card. Where he fell was not devolving even more power and responsibility to that crowd.

Let me ask each and every Bush-basher this one question: If you were the President of the USA, what would you have done during and after 9/11? Would you be so bold to say that his decisions were wrong? Oh to be so wise on the sidelines.

Canada enjoyes the protection that the US gives us by default. We are the first to spit on them and the last to say sorry. We are poor neighbors.

If you want to really understand the US, try reading The US Declaration of Independence and The US Constitution. We could use a lot more of that kind of wisdom here in Canada.

The remarks posted here truely show the kind of intolerance and arrogance that Canada feels entitled to in relation to the US. No wonder we are not on their radar; if you had an idiot neighbor would you go out of you way for them?

The fact that there has not been another attack on America, since 911, has little to do with Bush. What it shows is that there really were few people in the world who wanted to do such a horrid thing.

If the Americans would have concentrated on Afghanistan, Bin Laden would be captured by now. If they would have then taken one tenth of the dollars wasted in Iraq and spent them on helping Developing Nations, the world would be a much safer place.

If there is another attack with Obama in power, it will only be done to see if his reaction will as bad as Bush's.

With each Arab/Palestinian death, the chaos-seekers get happier. Bush has played right into their hand.

Alberta believer said "So maybe President Bush was supposed to let captured Islmist terrorists go back into circulation and kill people?"

You (and the Bush administration you seem to love so dearly) don't even know if most of the people in that gulag at Guantanamo are innocent or guilty. And you don't care. That's the problem - the West is currently is in the hands of fascist thinkers who are perfectly okay with people of a certain skin colour and cultural association being locked up and tortured without any recourse. People like Maher Arar, who was innocent, who was tortured for a year and cost Canadian taxpayers 12 million dollars, a much needed financial apology that few if any of the innocents trapped in Guantanomo will ever see.

Because if there's a remotely claimed chance they're a "terrorist", because of some stupid ignorant list made by fascists in the USA, that's all you need. Ruin 100 lives to theoretically save 1, that's okay to do, even if you can never actually prove that any real threat was ever neutralized. It's like taking credit for it not raining, or blaming something phony when it does rain. It's a complete lie. The whole war on terror is a lie.

One can only hope the pendulum will swing back the other way sometime in the future. Just because there was a terrorist attack is no reason to treat potentially innocent people like human trash and ruin their lives, or to trash the Geneva convention and the basic idea of human rights like Bush has done.

Last point: the west has killed more innocent civilians in the supposed fight against terror than the other way around... far, far more!

Asking George Bush for an opinion on moral standing is like asking a hermit for an opinion on popular cultural trends. It makes no sense at all.

The true mark of a real leader is not how he enters public office but how he departs. Bush has wreaked nothing but havoc in his 8 years as President. Bush and the Republicans leave a nation that is deeply divided and deeply wounded. Mr. Bush leaves a nation that is mired in two wasteful and to some extent illegal wars. And Bush has pursued single minded policies that have led to the bankrupting of the US economy and the disruption of all of the world economies.

There's an old expression: "With a friend like him who needs enemies!".
That fits Mr. Bush to a tee. The outside enemies of the free world that Mr. Bush likes to talk about have not impacted anywhere near the amount of devastation to United States and other free nations nor inflicted the long standing damage that George Bush and his Republican neo conservatives have done.

And now Mr. Bush can't even admit it.
A further mark of a true leader is to see his mistakes and be accountable for them. Mr. Bush fails again in this regard.

Good riddance to him.

Goodbye and good riddance. Bush was arguably the worst president in American history. Those who support him continue to live in a delusional world.

1. The 9/11 attack happened in spite of warnings that Bush ignored. After the attack, he sat for 10 minutes in an elementary school class doing nothing- he froze.

2. No attacks have happened since because Osama bin Laden has achieved his objective- he has suckered America into attacking Afghanistan and spending 10 billion a month for an endless "war on terror".

3. The attack on Iraq has nothing to do with terrorism: the attack was planned before Bush came into office because large oil companies need Iraq's oil. Cheney's friends in Halliburton have made billions in servicing this war, which has become another industry for America.

4. Bush talks about bringing freedom to the world, but he simultaneously shredded the American Constitution while he did it. Check out the "Patriot Act" which eliminates many American freedoms.

5. The Congress of the U.S. was not "under Democratic control for most of his presidency"- it has been controlled by the Republicans until the last two years.

6. It was the Republican controlled Congress that passed the legislation than deregulated the financial institutions that led to the credit meltdown. Bush signed that legislation into law.

7. Bush will not sign Kyoto' leaving America - and the world- more vulnerable to global warming.

8. Global warming is behind the Katrina disaster, a disaster that Bush watched unfold while he did nothing, and has still done nothing, to alleviate.

But the problem is not just Bush- he merely represents an entire conservative worldview that is behind most of today's problems.
